SAN DIEGO (RNN) – A former MLB pitcher has been charged in San Diego County with transporting over 40 pounds of what is believed to be cocaine.
Esteban Loaiza, who played 14 seasons in the major leagues with eight different teams, was arrested in Chula Vista, south of San Diego. The city is about a half-hour’s drive from the Mexican border.
The Associated Press reported officers discovered packages containing a white powder believed to be cocaine at his home.
The 46-year-old was booked on Friday. He was charged with three felony drug counts, including having over 20 kilograms of heroin and cocaine. His bail was set at $200,000.
As a member of the Chicago White Sox, Loaiza finished second in voting for the 2003 American League Cy Young award, given to the best pitcher in each league. He was born in Tijuana and pitched for Mexico in the 2006 World Baseball Classic. He last played in 2008, finishing with over $43 million in career earnings.
