Oskaloosa Man Arrested in Pella for Murder of William Penn Basketball Player

An Oskaloosa man charged with 2nd degree murder in the death of a William Penn basketball player was arrested in Pella.

According to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Luke VanHemert, 23, was taken into custody Wednesday without incident at his place of employment in Pella. VanHemert is accused of stabbing Marquis Todd, 22, who, according to the Office of the Iowa State Medical Examiner, died from a wound to the chest, as they ruled the manner of death a homicide. According to court records, both men were involved in an incident involving four other individuals, with VanHemert and Todd getting into a fight.

This is an ongoing investigation being worked jointly by the Oskaloosa Police Department, Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office, Marion County Sheriff’s Office, and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
