Former college football standout Kraig Appleton was charged with first-degree murder over the weekend in connection with the shooting death of an Illinois woman, according to a report.
Appleton, who played wide receiver for the Wisconsin Badgers between 2009 and 2010, was arrested Saturday in the shooting death of 41-year-old Kellie Ferrell on April 20, according to the Belleville News-Democrat.
Police were called around 10:30 p.m. to the 2900 block of Converse Avenue, where they found Ferrell with an apparent gunshot wound to the abdomen. She was transferred to an area hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
Appleton was arrested Saturday and is being held at the St. Clair County Jail on a $1 million bond, according to the report.
Expectations were high for Appleton at the University of Wisconsin, where he registered three passes for 26 yards his freshman year before being suspended indefinitely because he violated team rules, NBC Sports reported.
He withdrew from the university later that year and was involved in a shooting incident in 2011 in which he sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
