BUT IT IS ABOUT TO CHANGE QUICKLY. WE ARE STARTING OFF WITH ANOTHER CANCELLATION CAUSED BY CORONAVIRUS. NO HOMECOMING THIS FAL AT NORTH CAROLINA A&T STATE UNIVERSITY. BRIANA: THAT IS A BIG ONE FOR GREENSBORO. BRANDON BATES EXPLAINS WHY SCHOOL LEADERS SAY IT WAS A DIFFICULT DECISION, BUT THE RIGHT ONE. BRANDON: NORTH CAROLINA A&T ANNOUNCED TODAY THAT THEIR 2020 HOMECOMING CELEBRATION, THAT — A WEEK LONG OF THE FESTIVITIES, TO AVOID THE SPREAD OF THE CORONAVIRUS. THE GREATEST HOMECOMING ON EARTH, OR GHO. >> IMAGINE A BLOCK PARTY OR THE MOST LITTEST HOUSE PARTY OR CLUB YOU’VE BEEN TO. BRANDON: HAS OFFICIALLY BEEN CANCELED. >> MY MOTHER TEXTED ME EARLIER TODAY AND TOLD ME GHO WAS CANCELED. TO BE HONEST, I WAS UPSET. BRANDON: THE WEEK-LONG EVENT THAT DRAWS OVER 100,000 PEOPLE TO GREENSBORO WAS CANCELLED AS A WAY TO AVOID THE POSSIBLE SPREAD OF COVID-19. >> I REALLY COULD NOT BELIEVE IT. LIKE I’M SAYING, HOMECOMING HAS BEEN HOMECOMING, GHO HAS BEEN GHO LONGER THAN I’VE BEEN ON THIS EARTH. BRANDON: THE DECISION HIT HARD TO SOME STUDENTS, BUT SOME SAY IT WAS THE RIGHT DECISION. >> I RESPECT WHOEVER MADE THIS DECISION. I KNOW IT WAS TOUGH. >> WHAT IS BEHIND ME IS MY AGGIE PRIDE. BRANDON: TERESA DAVIS WORKS IN ALUMNI RELATIONS AT A&T AND SHE WAS PART OF THE TEAM WHO MADE THE DECISION TO CANCEL HOMECOMING. >> ACTUALLY, IT WAS NOT DIFFICULT BECAUSE OF THE FACT THE MAIN REASON BEHIND THE DECISION WAS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH AND SAFETY CONCERNS. THIS PANDEMIC IS A SERIOUS SITUATION, ESPECIALLY TO OUR AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY. BRANDON: DESPITE THE EVENTS BEING CANCELED, SOME STUDENTS SAY THIS DOESN’T MEAN THEY WON’T CELEBRATE. >> YOU CANNOT TAKE AWAY MY HOMECOMING. YOU JUST TOOK IT AWAY FROM THE PUBLIC, BUT I’M STILL GOING TO HAVE GHO. THAT’S JUST WHAT AGGIES D BRANDON: AND WHILE THE ACTIVITIES ARE CANCELED, THE HOMECOMING FOOTBALL GAME IS HAPPENING WITH LIMITED FANS. BRIANA: WINSTON-SALEM STATE’S HOMECOMING ACTIVITIES ARE ALSO CANCELED. THE WEEK-LONG CELEBRATION WAS SUPPOSED TO START SEPTEMBER 13. HOMECOMING TYPICALLY BRINGS ABOUT 10,000 PEOPLE TO WSSU FOR DOZENS OF DIFFERENT EVENTS. THE FOOTBALL GAME HAS NOT BEEN CANCELED. THE UNIVERSITY HOPES TO BRING FAMILIES AND ALUMNI BACK TO CAMPUS IN THE SPRING. LOOKING AHEAD, THE LAWYER FOR ACE SPEEDWAY WILL BE BACK IN COURT TOMORROW IN ALAMANCE COUNTY. HE’S EXPECTED TO CALL WITNESSES. A JUDGE GRANTED THE STATE’S REQUEST FOR A TEMPORARY RESTRAINING ORDER LAST WEEK. THE STATE SAYS THE SPEEDWAY RUNNING RACES IS AN IMMINENT HAZARD BECAUSE ORGANIZER LET TOO MANY FANS IN. THE GOVERNOR’S CURRENT ORDER LIMITS OUTDOOR GATHERINGS TO 25 PEOPLE. WE WILL HAVE COVERAGE OF TOMORROW’S HEARING, ON AIR AND ONLINE. FOR THE 10-TH TIME IN 18-DAYS OUR STATE HAS SET A NEW HIGH FOR MOST PEOPLE HOSPITALIZED WITH COVID-19 IN A SINGLE DAY. 857 PEOPLE ARE CURRENTLY IN THE HOSPITAL ACCORDING TO STATE NUMBERS. NORTH CAROLINA HEALTH LEADERS ARE REPORTING MORE THAN 1300 PEOPLE HAVE TESTED POSITIVE SINCE YESTERDAY. THAT BRINGS THE TOTAL NUMBER OF CASES SINCE EARLY MARCH PAST THE 48,000 MARK. BUT ACCORDING TO STATE ESTIMATIONS MORE THAN HALF OF PATIENTS HAVE RECOVERED. LEADERS SAY 9% OF COMPLETED TESTS ARE COMING BACK POSITIVE, WHICH IS ALMOST DOUBLE THE GOAL OF 5%. BRIANA: GOVERNOR ROY COOPER SAID AGAIN TODAY HE IS CONSIDERING MAKING MASKS MANDATORY STATEWIDE WHEN PEOPLE ARE OUT IN PUBLIC. THE GOVERNOR SAYS MORE AND MORE STUDIES ARE SHOWING MASKS CAN LIMIT CORONAVIRUS TRANSMISSION. AND RIGHT NOW, HE DOES NOT WANT THE STATE TO MOVE BACKWARD >> REGARDLESS OF WHETHER IT IS A LAW OR STORE RECOVERY — REQUIREMENT, WEARING A MASK SLOWS THE SPREAD OF THE VIRUS. THIS IS A LOW-COST, LOW-TECH WAY TO PROTECT OURSELVES AND OUR COMMUNITIES. IT IS AN IMPORTANT WAY TO SLOW THE SPREAD OF THE VIRUS WITHOUT HURTING THE ECONOMY. BRIANA: THE GOVERNOR SAYS HE’S GOING TO HAVE A DECISION ON MASKS AND THE NEXT PHASE OF REOPENING NEXT WEEK. BOONE IS THE LATEST TOWN IN NORTH CAROLINA MAKING MASKS MANDATORY. THAT ORDER STARTS MASKS WILL BE SATURDAY. REQUIRED FOR ANYONE IN PUBLIC INDOOR SPACES. TOMORROW, RALEIGH WILL IMPLEMENT MANDATORY FACE MASKS IN BOTH PUBLIC AND PRIVATE PLACES WHERE IT’S NOT POSSIBLE TO STAY SIX-FEET APART. KENNY: UNC GREENSBORO STUDENTS WILL BE REQUIRED TO WEAR A MASK INDOORS WHEN THEY RETURN TO CAMPUS IN THE FALL. THAT INCLUDES CLASSROOMS, LIBRARIES, AND AUDITORIUMS, AND OUTDOORS IN SITUATIONS WHERE STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND STAFF CANNOT SAFELY SOCIAL DISTANCE. SCHOOL DISTRICTS ARE REQUIRED TO COME UP WITH 3 OPTIONS WHEN IT COMES TO REOPENING K-12 SCHOOLS IN THE FALL. WINSTON-SALEM FORSYTH COUNTY SCHOOL’S COVID-19 SPECIAL COMMITTEE MET WITH OTHER DISTRICT LEADERS TODAY. THEY SAY THEY’RE STILL WORKING THROUGH SURVEY RESPONSES FROM FAMILIES AND STAFF. LEADERS SAY THESE SURVEYS SHOW PARENTS ARE WORRIED ABOUT THEIR CHILDREN’S ACADEMIC GROWTH, AND THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION THEY’RE RECEIVIN REMOTE LEARNING, POSSIBLE EXPOSURE TO COVID-19, AND MENTAL HEALTH ARE ALL AREAS OF CONCERN. A MORE CONCRETE PLAN IS SET TO BE PRESENTED TO THE BOARD OF EDUCATION FOR THE DISTRICT BY THE END OF THIS MONTH. BRIANA: LAWMAKERS ARE WORKING ON ANOTHER BILL TO GET BUSINESS IS OPEN, THIS ONE F AMUSEMENT PARKS AND RECEPTION VENUES. MANY VENUE OWNERS, CATERERS AND PHOTOGRAPHERS REACHED OUT TO LAWMAKERS FOR HELP. THE PROPOSED BILL WOULD LIMIT CAPACITY, REQUIRE FACES MASKS AND GLOVES FOR EMPLOYEES, AND BAN SELF-SERVICE OR BUFFET MEALS. AMUSEMENT PARKS WOULD ALSO HAVE TO LIMIT GUESTS, OFFER NO-CONTACT CHECK-IN, AND CLEAN FREQUENTLY. THIS MEASURE HAS TO CLEAR SEVERAL MORE STOPS BEFORE IT GETS TO A FULL VOTE. KENNY: MEANWHILE, OTHER BUSINESSES ARE STILL WAITING TO OPEN THEIR DOORS. STATE LAWMAKERS PASSED LEGISLATION TO LET BARS AND GYMS TO OPEN BACK UP. IT’S ON THE GOVERNOR’S DESK BUT HE HASN’T SIGNED OR VETOED IT . GYMS AND BARS ARE PART OF THE NE
