CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – A 15-year-old will be tried as an adult in connection with the deadly shooting of a college baseball player who was killed while responding to an online sales ad.

Zachary Finch, 21, was shot and killed the afternoon of June 18, 2017, in the 2300 block of Farmer Street. Finch was reportedly in the area to buy an upgraded iPhone, but something went wrong, and police believe there was a robbery.

Jahzion Wilson, a 15-year-old charged in the case, was transferred from juvenile court to Mecklenburg County Superior Court Monday after the judge found probable cause to charge Wilson with first-degree murder, a Class A felony.

“According to state law, the court must transfer a juvenile to Superior Court if the court finds probable cause that a juvenile age 13 or older has committed a Class A felony,” the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office says.

Wilson is also charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Demonte McCain, 17, was arrested in October and charged with murder, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon.

A second 15-year-old was arrested in July in connection with this shooting. The juvenile’s name was not released due to their age.

Wilson’s next court date has yet to be set. He is in custody at a juvenile detention center.

Finch was a senior at the University of the Cumberlands (UC) in Williamsburg, Kentucky, and a member of the Patriots baseball team, the university says.

After Finch’s killing, police opened 14 “exchange zones” at QuikTrip convenience stores where people can more safely conduct online transactions.

CHARLOTTE, N.C., (WKYT) – A 15-year-old boy will be tried as an adult in the connection of a University of Cumberland’s baseball player.

Zachary Finch, 21, died on June 18, 2017, after being shot in Charlotte, North Carolina. His family says he used an app to meet someone to buy a cell phone. Instead, police say he was robbed and shot.

WBTV, the CBS affiliate in Charlotte, reports Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police arrested Demonte McCain, 17, on Wednesday. He is charged with murder, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Although another arrest has been made, coaches and teammates say they are still missing their starting pitcher and are reminded of his absence in the simplest ways.

“Last night we had our fall World Series draft, I had some memories,” says University of Cumberland’s Baseball Coach Brad Shelton. “It’s a thing where our kids dress up, and have a good time. I remember Zach really had a good time with that, and events that we did. Thought a lot about him yesterday as we were playing in that event.”

Police in Charlotte are still investigating the shooting.

In July, police arrested two 15-year-olds in the case. Their names have not been released because of their age.

One of those 15-year-olds, Jahzion Wilson will be charged as an adult in his connection to the case. Wilson is charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A judge ruled Monday that a 15-year-old accused of shooting and killing a college baseball player will be tried as an adult.

Jah’zion Wilson is charged with murder in connection with Zack Finch’s death.

Channel 9 was the only TV station in the courtroom as a judge heard evidence in the case.

The judge ordered Wilson to be held with no bond.

Eyewitness News reporter Mark Becker spoke to Finch’s mother after the hearing, and she said while she’s happy with the outcome, there will never be a win since her son is gone.

Finch, 21, was shot and killed in June while trying to buy a cellphone using a buying and selling app called LetGo.

He was a student and baseball player at the University of Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Kentucky. He listed his hometown as Mint Hill.

Demonte McCain, 17, is also charged with murder in the case. A second 15-year-old was arrested, but charges were dismissed against the teen.

Eyewitness News reporter Mark Becker was in the courtroom and will have the key testimony that led to the judge’s decision at 5:36 p.m. on Channel 9.
