Legal Rights of Student Sex Abuse Victims

Sexual predators are often found in positions of trust, including teaching, coaching, and other educational professions. School officials must do everything they can to make sure all employees are trustworthy and students are safe from sexual predators. But sadly, there have been widespread reports of teachers and coaches sexually abusing students throughout the country.

When a coach or teacher is charged with sexually abusing a student, the school should also be investigated. Some of these cases of abuse only happen due to negligence by school officials, like failing to run background checks or ignoring past complaints of inappropriate behavior by the employee who was arrested. In cases of negligence, school sex abuse victims and their families may have grounds for a lawsuit.

The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia is demanding pre-trial detention of tennis player Nikoloz Basilashvili.

The agency has charged Basilashvili for abusing his ex-wife.

The investigation established that the sportsman physically abused his ex-wife N.D. after having an argument with her on May 21.

He was arrested on May 22.

The pre-trial hearing of the case is currently being held in the Tbilisi City Court behind the closed door.

The investigation against Basilashvili is underway under Article 126, Part 2, Subparagraph B of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which envisages violence against a family member.

Two Singaporean men have been charged with verbally abusing public servants in separate incidents during the coronavirus outbreak.

Eddie Neo Zhong Jie, 35, and Lew Wei Ming, 37, were each charged with one count of harassment in a district court on Wednesday.

The duo were among eight people – seven Singaporean men and a Taiwanese woman – who appeared in court that day over offences such as assault and failing to wear their masks over their noses and mouths when stepping outside. They are between 35 and 58 years old.

One of them, Mohamed Ali Ramly, 52, was allegedly caught on video verbally abusing a store supervisor with vulgarities and racist remarks.

He is said to have committed the offences when he went to Li Li Cheng Minimart at Block 651 Jurong West Street 61 at around 6pm last Friday.

Another alleged offender, Alan Lim, 55, is accused of slapping and shoving a service attendant at an Esso petrol station in Jervois Road at around 6pm on April 12.

The cases involving all eight alleged offenders are still pending.

According to court documents, Lew allegedly used “insulting words” on a police officer, Senior Staff Sergeant Don Ng Zhen Xuan, outside the School of the Arts in Zubir Said Drive near Orchard Road at around 4.30pm on April 16.

The police said in a statement on Wednesday evening that Lew had allegedly insulted the policeman after the officer issued him a notice of composition for not wearing a mask in the vicinity.

They added that Lew has since been issued a composition fine for failing to put on a mask.

Neo is accused of saying a vulgar word to Singapore Food Agency enforcement officer Muhammad Nazri Roseli at a coffee shop at Block 253 Jurong East Street 24, Yuhua Village, at around noon on April 13.

The police said Neo allegedly committed the offence during an enforcement check on illegal hawking at the eatery.

They added that he has also been issued a composition fine for illegal hawking, which is an offence under the Covid-19 (Temporary Measure) (Control Order) Regulations 2020.

They also said Neo had carried out a business outside his home as a non-essential service provider. They did not state what he was selling at the time.

The police did not reveal details about the fines handed to Neo and Lew.

On Wednesday, the court heard that Neo intends to plead guilty to his charge and will be back in court on May 6. Lew’s pre-trial conference will be held on May 8.

West Brom striker Jay Rodriguez has been charged by the Football Association after allegations he racially abused Gaetan Bong in last month’s Premier League match against Brighton.

The pair clashed during the match and Rodriguez is alleged to have used “abusive and/or insulting words which included a reference to ethnic origin and/or colour and/or race,” according to the FA.

Rodriguez has until 16 February 2018 to respond to the charge. He strongly denies any wrongdoing and West Brom immediately announced that they would contest the charge. “Absolutely gutted and in disbelief at the situation I find myself in,” Rodriguez tweeted. “I 100% deny the false allegation and will take the correct legal advice to prove my innocence.”

Richard Garlick, Albion’s Director of Football Administration, said: “As a Club we remain fully supportive and committed to backing Jay throughout this process.”

A source close to the player told The Independent that Rodriguez was “deeply upset” by the accusation of racism, which he vehemently denies.

West Brom manager Alan Pardew commented after the match he found it “very difficult” to believe that Rodriguez would make a racist comment, saying: “”Jay Rodriguez claims that the allegation, whatever the allegation is, is untrue.”

Footage from the match shows the pair bumping into one another and arguing, before Rodriguez holds his nose and waves his hands in front of his face as if to gesture that Bong smells.

Bong immediately complained to referee Martin Atkinson, who included the complaint in his report. Bong claimed that Rodirguez told him: “You are black and you stink.”

Bong elaborated on the incident during an appearance on French television last month.

“There was a lot of tension between the players because it was an important game,” he told SFR Sport.

“He was upset because I blocked him and after that he said some words. He said racist comments.

“I looked for the referee to tell him. First the referee told me to get back in position. I didn’t accept that so easily. I am a black man. We’re in 2018 and we cannot tolerate this. I hope there will be sanctions.’

Bong later added: “He did that because of the colour of my skin. I asked him to repeat what he said and I think he realised what he said and tried to limit the damage. And I replied to him: No, what you said was racist.

“At the end of the game he tried to say: No I didn’t say that. But I said: You can’t say that. Not to a human being. And most of all not to a black man, at this period, with everything that is happening in the world.”
