PROVO — BYU football star Chaz Ah You was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and marijuana in Eagle Mountain, according to Utah County Sheriff’s Sgt. Spencer Cannon and Utah County Justice Court documents.

Ah You, a junior linebacker, was pulled over by a Utah County sheriff’s deputy at 4:46 p.m. on Sunday along Red Hawk Road near the Pony Express Parkway after he was observed speeding, weaving in and out of traffic, following other vehicles too closely and not signaling for lane changes, Cannon said.

BYU football spokesperson Brett Pyne said Wednesday afternoon that the school is “aware of the situation and looking into it.” Ah You is the second BYU football player to be arrested on suspicion of DUI in eight months. Last summer, BYU receiver Neil Pau’u pleaded guilty to an amended charge of impaired driving and ultimately missed the entire 2019 season.

Ah You reached speeds of 75 mph in areas where the posted speed limit was anywhere from 35 to 55 mph, a police booking affidavit states. The arresting officer said he performed an inventory search of the vehicle and found two containers of alcohol (one was empty) and a “THC vape pen” in the center console.

The officer stated that he opted to perform a field sobriety test at the Utah County Jail, “due to the weather.”

Cannon said Ah You was booked into the Utah County Jail shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday for a combination of alcohol and marijuana, having an open container in a vehicle, reckless driving, improper lane change and speeding.

Ah You was released on his own recognizance around 8 p.m. Sunday without having to post bail.

One of BYU’s top recruits from its 2017 signing class, Ah You played at Westlake and Timpview high schools. He is considered one of the top defenders on the team, and was to be a probable starter in 2020.

He served a brief mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints after his freshman season, returning home before the usual two years due to medical reasons.

Listed as the No. 1 football recruit in the state of Utah after the 2016 prep football season, Ah You played in 11 games for the Cougars this past season and made 24 tackles and one interception.

In addition to DUI, a class B misdemeanor, he is also charged with reckless driving, a class B misdemeanor, drinking in or about a vehicle, a class C misdemeanor, plus speeding and improper lane change, both infractions.

He pleaded not guilty to each of the charges on Tuesday, according to court records. The total recommended bail amount was set at $2,870.
