Kangaroos premiership player Dean Laidley is behind bars after being charged with stalking and other undisclosed offences in Melbourne.   

A Victoria Police spokesman told Daily Mail Australia the 53-year-old father-of-three was arrested in St Kilda on Saturday night and appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Sunday. 

Laidley did not apply for bail and will remain behind bars until he reappears in court on May 11. 

Two photos emerged online appearing to show a mugshot of the ex-footy player as well as him being questioned in a police station.

His lawyer Dee Giannopoulos wrote on Twitter she was furious at the photos being leaked. 

‘Outraged that pictures of my client, taken by some police officer, on the sly , when in custody in interview have hit the media. Typical,’ she wrote on social media. 

Victoria Police said they were aware of the photos and its Professional Standards Command had been notified.

‘As the matter is before the court it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time,’ a police spokesperson said.

Further details surrounding Laidley’s arrest will be revealed at his court appearance. 

Laidley played 151 games for the Kangaroos and the West Coast Eagles before he retired in 1997.

He won a premiership with the Kangaroos in 1996 and was inducted into the Kangaroos Hall of Fame in 2019.

His coaching career includes seven seasons with the Kangaroos as well as time with Port Adelaide, St Kilda and Carlton. 

Laidley and his family were attacked by bouncers at the Bounty night club in Bali after his daughter’s wedding in 2011.

His son received a broken jaw while Laidley required stitches after being hit in the head with a bottle.
