AUBURN — Redshirt freshman Auburn football player Jashawn Sheffield has been suspended indefinitely following a pair of arrests in Georgia, a team spokesman confirmed to the Montgomery Advertiser.

Sheffield, a native of Brunswick, Georgia, was arrested for disorderly conduct on May 9 then again for a “DUI Less Safe” on May 16 in Bulloch County. He spent two days in jail after each arrest, getting released on a $1,576 bond after the second.

In the state of Georgia, a “DUI Less Safe” can be charged if a law enforcement officer believes a driver is less safe behind the wheel because of alcohol consumption, even if that person is under a specific blood-alcohol content.

The former four-star athlete played wide receiver as a true freshman at Auburn, appearing in only game (Nov. 23 against Samford) and carrying twice for 30 yards. He was expected to get a look at a defensive back whenever the Tigers resumed practice for the 2020 season.

It is still unclear when Auburn will get to return to the practice field and, now, when Sheffield will be allowed to rejoin the team.

Sheffield caught 92 passes for 1,393 yards, rushed 254 times for 2,040 yards and totaled 41 touchdowns on offense and recorded 50 tackles, two sacks and three interceptions on defense during his high school career at Frederica Academy in Saint Simons Island, Georgia.

Tom Green of AL.com was the first to report the news Wednesday.

HOUSTON — All is calm after a nearly 11-hour rally in downtown Houston where protesters took the streets to demand justice for George Floyd, a Houston native who died in Minneapolis as a result of an officer kneeling on his neck while he was being arrested for an alleged forgery.

Nearly 200 people were arrested during the rally. Many of the people arrested will be charged with obstructing a roadway, according to the Houston Police Department.

Four Houston police officers suffered minor injuries during the protest and eight police vehicles were damaged.

The rally itself was mostly peaceful with only a handful of arrests.

Acevedo said about a dozen people total had been taken into custody by Friday evening.

Hundreds marched from Discovery Green to Houston City Hall Friday afternoon in memory of  Floyd, who died at the hands of Minneapolis police officers.

Several marchers carried signs and chanted “No justice, no peace,” and other rallying cries along the way.

At City Hall, they shouted “I can’t breathe” in reference to Floyd’s pleas for help as former officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on his neck.

Houston police dressed in riot gear kept watch during the rally but their were no major issues.

Turner later said he understands the anger and frustration and supports the right to protest, but asked Houstonians to keep it peaceful.

Floyd’s death hits close to home because he grew up in the Third Ward.  A lot of Houstonians knew him and he still has family here.

BLM organizers say “people are angry” and what happened to Floyd has to fuel change.

“My message to everybody who’s coming is this a community event, a family event, it ain’t just to express our anger, but we have to get together to truly get something done,” said Ashton Woods, with Black Lives Matter Houston.

Sharks winger Evander Kane signed and tweeted a petition Wednesday calling for the Minneapolis police officers fired following the death of an unarmed African American man to face prosecution.

The petition, initially shared by the super PAC known as Action PAC, advocated for Hennepin County Attorney Michael Freeman to press charges against officers Derek Chauvin, Thomas Lane, Tou Thao and J. Alexander Kueng in the wake of Floyd’s death in police custody Monday. Video captured by onlookers showed Chauvin, who is white, kneeling on Floyd’s neck for around eight minutes while arresting him.

Floyd died soon after being taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, police said Tuesday. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey announced Tuesday that the four officers had been fired, and police said the FBI and Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension would be investigating the incident. The Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis said Tuesday that all four officers are fully cooperating with the investigation and that “[now] is not the time (to) rush to judgment and immediately condemn our officers.”

On Wednesday, police used tear gas on Minneapolis protestors for the second day in a row during demonstrations following Floyd’s death. Professional athletes and coaches, in the Bay Area and elsewhere, have expressed outrage at Floyd’s death — and police brutality against African Americans — in the last two days, joining Kane and Frey in calling for the officers to face criminal charges.

Kane tweeted Tuesday that Floyd’s death made his “[f—ing] blood boil.”

The 28-year-old has increasingly spoken out against racism in hockey within the last year. Kane is one of just 43 players of color in the NHL, according to WDET, who account for fewer than 5 percent of the league’s players.

Former NHLer Akim Aliu, whose revelation that Bill Peters directed racial slurs towards him in the AHL led to the Calgary Flames firing the coach late last year, penned a piece in “The Players Tribune” earlier this month outlining his experience facing bigotry at every level of his hockey career. Kane tweeted the piece on May 19, imploring everyone who works in and/or follows the sport to read it.

“I actually read a tweet yesterday saying, you know, ‘Stop crying, Akim. You just weren’t good enough,’ ” Kane recalled last week in an interview on an episode of TSN’s “In Depth” centered on racism in hockey. “And I’m thinking, ‘Well, clearly, he was good enough.’ He played in the NHL. He was actually at a training camp in Atlanta my second year … but that’s the furthest from the point.

“This isn’t about Akim being good enough to play in the National Hockey League, or not. It’s about while he was playing in [the American Hockey League] or while he was playing in the OHL, he encountered racism. Whether that happened yesterday or happened 10 years ago, it makes no difference.”

Since 2012, the 49ers’ front office has more experience dealing with players’ off-field legal issues than any other team in the NFL. During that time, the 49ers have seen an NFL-high 17 player arrests, including allegations of domestic violence that have been dealt with in a variety of ways.

More times than not, the team did not immediately cut ties with its players.

Thursday, following news that Santa Clara County prosecutors filed multiple charges against Reuben Foster, including one felony count of domestic violence, the 49ers issued a statement that did not make any mention of intentions to cut their star linebacker.

“The 49ers organization is aware of today’s disturbing charges regarding Reuben Foster,” the statement reads. “We will continue to follow this serious matter. Reuben is aware that his place in our organization is under great scrutiny and will depend on what is learned through the legal process.”

The majority of players arrested or criminally charged since 2012 were handled during former general manager Trent Baakle’s tenure. John Lynch was named the team’s GM in January, 2017.

Jed York has served as the team’s chief executive officer since 2010.

The charges against Foster, a first-round pick in 2017, stem from an alleged attack Feb. 11 that investigators say left his 28-year-old girlfriend with a ruptured eardrum, according to a news release from the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office.

During last month’s NFL owners meeting in Florida, York couched his support of Foster.

“We’d love Reuben to be on this team, and we’d love him to participate for us,” York told NBC Sports Bay Area. “But if he’s not doing things off the field that allow us to be able to rely on him – or he’s doing something that we’re not comfortable with off the field and it’s proven that’s what’s going on — I think the guys have said then you’re just going to have to move on.”

The 49ers did not offer the same support to defensive back Tramaine Brock, who was released last April just hours after his arrest in a domestic-violence incident that left his girlfriend with “visible injuries.” Santa Clara County prosecutors declined to filed charges against Brock, who resumed his career with the Minnesota Vikings.

Brock was signed by the 49ers as an undrafted free-agent out of college.

Over the past few years, domestic-violence or sexual assault charges were filed against players who at the time were on the 49ers roster, including Bruce Miller, Ray McDonald and Ahmad Brooks.

McDonald played the majority of the 2014 season, including the team’s opening game in September, just one week after his arrest on suspicion of domestic violence. That November, Santa Clara County prosecutors opted not to file domestic-violence charges against McDonald, citing insufficient evidence and that it appeared the fiancee initiated the physical contact that led to his arrest.

But McDonald was cut by the 49ers in December, 2014, citing ” a pattern of poor decision-making” following a string of off-field incidents. At the time of his release, McDonald was being investigated by San Jose police on a sexual-assault allegation. Prosecutors later filed a rape charge against McDonald, only to drop the charge in April, 2017 when the alleged victim refused to testify.

In August, 2015, Santa Clara County prosecutors filed a misdemeanor sexual battery charge against 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks over an incident with an intoxicated woman at a December house party held at McDonald’s house. Brooks played in 14 games that season, and in 16 games in the 2016 season before being released in August, 2017.

In January, Brooks agreed to a plea deal with prosecutors, and sexual battery charges were reduced to simple battery after a defense lawyer claimed that a Santa Clara County prosecutor had made false statements about the case in a sworn declaration. The defense did acknowledge in a court document that Brooks “touched (the victim) intimately over her pants.”

When Miller was charged in May 2015 with misdemeanor vandalism following a domestic incident, the 49ers took a wait-and-see approach and stated they would “monitor these legal proceedings closely.” Miller eventually pleaded no contest in August 2015 to a misdemeanor disturbing-the-peace charge and was ordered to attend domestic-violence counseling. He remained with the team until September, 2016, when he was released by the 49ers hours after his arrest on suspicion of beating a 70-year-old man with a cane in a drunken assault at a Fisherman’s Wharf hotel.

The former 49er who endured the most legal trouble while with the team was Aldon Smith, who was drafted in the first round (No. 7 overall) in 2011 and was arrested five times during his tenure with the team. In 2013, Smith was allowed to practice with the team just hours after his arrest on suspicion of DUI in San Jose.

Jadar Johnson stepped back from the podium as a shy smile stretched across his face. He clutched the podium and rocked.

“I ain’t even gonna lie to y’all. I’m nervous,” Johnson said, as he addressed a crowd of eager and exuberant fans.

It was Jan. 14, 2017. Nearly 65,000 people filled the lower bowl of Death Valley to celebrate the national championship the Clemson football team earned earlier that week.

Team leaders rotated to the microphone to share thanks and thoughts on the milestone achievement. Johnson, a senior safety from Orangeburg, allayed his nerves and acknowledged his coaches, mentors and teammates.

After three minutes, he paused.

“I’m still nervous,” he said to a roar of laughter, “but I’m still not done.”

Johnson proceeded into a two-minute, heartfelt tribute to his father. The speech evoked an ovation from the crowd and astonishment from his coach.

“I’ve been with Jadar Johnson four years,” Dabo Swinney told the crowd. “That’s the most I’ve heard him say in four years.”

Johnson’s play was always louder than his voice, but, on that day, his words resonated. The reserved prospect blossomed into a team captain. That speech provided a lasting image of his transformation.

It is a stark contrast to the images Clemson fans saw this week.

Johnson was one of three men Clemson police arrested and charged with armed robbery Wednesday. Johnson, former Clemson running back C.J. Fuller and former Duke lineman Quaven Ferguson were also charged with possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

Arrests of Clemson football players have been relatively rare occurrences in Dabo Swinney’s nine-plus seasons as the Tigers’ head coach.

Since Swinney assumed the program’s reins midway through the 2008 season, seven Clemson football players have been arrested, not counting former players such as Jadar Johnson and C.J. Fuller, who were arrested on Wednesday and charged with armed robbery and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime by Clemson police.

Swinney did not offer a statement on the arrests of his former players on Thursday, but one could come later, according to Tim Bourret, the school’s assistant athletic director for football communications.

“He would like to hear more facts of the case,” Bourret said.

Swinney repeatedly has said that his staff attempts to target only “high character guys” when recruiting, and the numbers support that he has been largely successful in that pursuit.

For comparison’s sake, Florida State leads the Atlantic Coast Conference with 28 player arrests since 2010, according to the web site arrestnation.com

Only five ACC programs – Duke, Virginia, Wake Forest, Boston College and Georgia Tech – have had fewer arrests than Clemson during that time span.

The University of Georgia has had 40 player arrests since 2010 while defending national champion Alabama has logged 30 player arrests in the past eight years.

The University of South Carolina has had 10; Furman University five, but none since 2011.

For Clemson, star wide receiver Sammy Watkins was arrested on campus in May 2012 and charged with possession of a controlled substance and simple possession of marijuana, both misdemeanors.

“I am mad and hurt by the poor decision that Sammy Watkins made,” Swinney said at the time. “He is a good young man who has been a model student, citizen, player and teammate. This is a reminder that good people make poor decisions. There are consequences for your actions and there will be in this case.”

Watkins was suspended by Swinney for the first two games of the 2012 season, missing games against Auburn and Ball State.

In March of 2016, redshirt freshman cornerback Kaleb Chalmers was arrested in Clinton and charged with simple drug possession, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a schedule II controlled substance. He was dismissed a week later by Swinney.

Kicker Aamon Lakip was suspended for the first three games of 2015 by Swinney following Lakip’s June arrest for DUI and possession of cocaine.

In May of 2015, defensive end Ebenezer Ogundeko was dismissed from the team after being arrested and charged with one count of financial transaction fraud.

In 2012, wide receiver Joe Craig was arrested and charged with criminal domestic violence and dismissed from the team three days later.

In 2011, freshman offensive lineman Brandon Thomas was arrested and charged with public disorderly conduct.

In May of 2010, defensive lineman Jamie Cumbie was arrested and charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature for an incident in Clemson. He was dismissed from the team.
