An assistant football coach at Tuskegee University faces federal drug trafficking and firearm charges, according to an indictment unsealed in Alabama on Wednesday.

Ramone Nickerson, a cornerbacks coach, faces two possession with the intent to distribute charges — one for marijuana and another for cocaine. He also faces a single count of possession of a firearm during a drug trafficking offense.

Louis V. Franklin, the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama, told USA TODAY Sports the charges stem from a search of Nickerson’s vehicle by a state trooper in Russell County on March 13.

Franklin said there was no evidence that Nickerson peddled drugs at Tuskegee University. Nickerson was found to have about three ounces of cocaine, a pound of marijuana, along with a .40 caliber handgun at the time of the search.

Typically, drug and gun charges like this would be handled by local prosecutors, but Franklin said the push by U.S. Attorney Jeff Sessions to enforce federal statutes on the use of firearms in drug trafficking made this a federal case. Sessions sent a memo to 94 U.S. Attorneys in October that he wanted them to reemphasize the Project Safe Neighborhoods program to target local gangs and reduce gun violence.

“By having a gun and the drugs, that made this a big deal,” Franklin said.

Nickerson, who also played at Tuskegee University, was indicted by a federal grand jury on March 14, according to court records.

He was arraigned on Wednesday and was released on bond. Nickerson, 33, faces up to 25 years in federal prison if convicted on all three charges, a minimum of five for the gun charge alone.

“Coaches are role models, teachers and ‘stand-in’ moms and dads for our college athletes,” Franklin said in an email to USA TODAY Sports. “They show young adults how to grow into adulthood by making good choices. Ramone Nickerson should have been a role model, not just for the young athletes on the Tuskegee University football team, but also for every student at the university, as well as the neighborhood he lived in.

“Instead, he abandoned his responsibilities to the young athletes he coached, and made a choice to chase a fast dollar and expose the community to the dangers of drug trafficking. And, in doing so, he decided that money was more important than his good name, more important than his status as a role model, and more important than his community, as well as the young people growing up in it.”

In a statement to USA TODAY Sports, the school said: “The university has learned of Mr. Nickerson’s recent arrest, and because of the active investigation related to these charges, we cannot comment on his legal situation or employment standing at this time.”

The school website still listed Nickerson as an assistant coach Wednesday afternoon. Nickerson is a former Tuskegee defensive back and graduated in 2009.

Ex-NFL player, assistant football coach in S.C. charged with having sex with student

A former NFL player who was an assistant football coach in South Carolina has been arrested and charged with sexual battery of a minor.

De’Andre Reshaud Presley, a 28-year-old who played briefly as a wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins and Carolina Panthers and was an assistant football coach at Woodruff (S.C.) High, is charged in connection to an incident that occurred last November, according to a Spartanburg County (S.C.) Sheriff’s Office arrest warrant obtained by the Spartanburg Herald-Journal.

Presley turned himself in Thursday morning, Lt. Kevin Bobo told the Herald-Journal.

According to an incident report, school administration received information on Dec. 21 about inappropriate contact between Presley and a student. The report states that, once confronted, Presley denied the incident but resigned “on the spot.”

In the statement, Bobo said that Presley returned to the school after classes resumed and admitted to the principal that he had engaged in a sexual relationship with a student between 16 and 17 years old.

According to WSPA.com, the special victims unit investigator interviewed the victim and her mother and consulted the Solicitor’s Office about the appropriate charge. A warrant was approved for Presley’s arrest on Jan. 31, and he turned himself in Thursday morning.

In a statement obtained by the Herald-Journal, Spartanburg School District 4 superintendent Rallie Liston said Presley was a non-certified staff member from June until he resigned.

“Mr. Presley is no longer an employee in Spartanburg District Four,” Liston said in the statement. “He had served in a non-certified staff position from June through December 2017. Administration immediately contacted a School Resource Officer and notified the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office when the matter was brought to their attention.

“Student safety has always been and will continue to be our top priority. The district conducts background checks on all employees and meets with new staff members to communicate the high expectations for employee conduct. Beyond that, we are unable to comment on personnel matters or matters related to the privacy of our students.”

Presley was born in Tampa, Fla. and played college football at Appalachian State, where he was a quarterback. After being undrafted in 2012, he signed with the San Diego Chargers as a cornerback, but was cut. He then signed on to play receiver for the Dolphins, appearing in four games. In 2013, he was cut by the Dolphins and added to the Carolina Panthers practice squad. He bounced between being a defensive back and receiver before appearing in four games for the Panthers in 2014. In 2015, he was cut by the team.

Dover HS assistant coach had sex with player, police say

Dover Area High School’s suspended girls’ assistant basketball coach is now criminally charged, accused of having a sexual relationship with a player on the team.

Aignee Nicole Freeland, 23, of the first block of West Maple Street, was arrested the morning of Wednesday, Jan. 10, according to Northern York County Regional Police.

She was arraigned on the third-degree felony charges of institutional sexual assault and unlawful contact with a minor by District Judge David Eshbach, who set bail at $100,000 and ordered Freeland to have no contact with the alleged victim, or with any minors.

She was then transported to the county’s central booking unit. It was unclear Wednesday morning whether Freeland would post bail or be committed to York County Prison.

Northern Regional Police said they were notified by Dover Area School District officials on Dec. 20 that they learned of an alleged inappropriate relationship between Freeland and the player.

The allegations: Charging documents allege Freeland had a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old girl who plays, or played, on the team.

After telling the girl’s mother about the alleged relationship on Dec. 20, she gave investigators permission to look at her daughter’s phone, and a forensic analysis was performed, documents state.

It showed 18 video calls — incoming, outgoing and missed — between Freeland and the girl on Dec. 18 and 19, according to charging documents.

The girl was interviewed Jan. 4 and said she and Freeland met on several occasions after basketball practice in Dover Borough, Dover Township and Manchester Township, documents state.

They would sit in a vehicle, talk, and engage in sexual contact, according to police.

“She said Freeland would touch her ‘all over her body,'” documents state, and that the alleged fondling included Freeland penetrating the girl’s genitalia with her fingers.

Kept quiet? “Both were aware Freeland could get in trouble if anyone found out about the relationship, so they agreed not to tell anyone,” charging documents state.

The relationship began Nov. 1 and continued until Dec. 20, the day police went to the girl’s mother.

Northern Regional Police Lt. David Lash said the investigation continues.

“We are attempting to determine if additional victims exist,” he said.

Freeland is being represented by RJ Fisher, a former York County prosecutor who’s now an attorney with Chris Ferro’s law firm.

“It’s obviously a complicated situation,” Fisher told The York Dispatch. “We’ll be reviewing the charges more closely and we look forward to addressing them in the near future.”

She was suspended Dec. 20, according to Dennis Kloster, who resigned his position as volunteer assistant coach on Dec. 23.

Kloster said he resigned because girls’ basketball head coach Kevin Glover was suspended from his position by the school district on Dec. 21.

Coaches, friends: The two men are friends who have coached together for many years, Kloster said, adding he doesn’t think it’s right that Glover was suspended.

Kloster told The York Dispatch that school officials directed the team coaches not to speak publicly about what was going on, or they would lose their jobs. He said he decided to quit so he could speak out on Glover’s behalf.

“He’s done absolutely nothing wrong,” Kloster said of Glover. “I felt if I quit, nobody could tell me I can’t talk.”

Dover Area School District Superintendent Tracy Krum did not return repeated messages seeking comment, and Dover Area Athletic Director Rich Leathery declined comment last week.

About Freeland: A graduate of William Penn Senior High School, Freeland had a standout basketball career at Edinboro University, after which she signed a contract to play professional women’s basketball.

That was in the summer of 2016, and she was slated to play in Romania until March 2017.

Freeland left Edinboro as a three-time All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division selection and was the PSAC West Freshman of the Year. The Fighting Scots won 20 or more games during all four years that Freeland played for the team, posting an 89-31 record over that time.

During the 2013-14 season, Freeland was part of a PSAC championship team and helped push the school to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight for the second time in program history.

In her senior year, Freeland was sixth in the conference in scoring at 16.3 points per game, ninth in rebounds with 7.9 per game and third with 55 blocks on the season. Freeland shot a team-best 51.1. percent from the floor and ranked fourth on the team with 45 assists.

Freeland cracked the 1,000-point career mark during her junior season and leaves sixth all-time in Edinboro scoring with 1,555 career points. She is also third all-time in career rebounds with 944 and has the fifth highest block total at 139.

About Glover: Glover became head coach of the Dover varsity girls’ basketball team in spring of 2016, the fourth head coach in as many seasons.

At the time, Leathery said the top quality they were looking for in a head coach was stability.

Glover, a 2001 York High graduate, brought about a dozen years of coaching experience to the job, having worked for New Hope Academy, William Penn Senior High School and Northeastern High School.
