Georgian professional tennis player Nikoloz Basilashvili has been charged with attacking his ex-wife, Neka Dorokashvili, in the presence of their young child.

Basilashvili, who is ranked 27th in the world, was arrested on 22 May and released on ₾100,000  ($31,000) bail by Tbilisi City Court.

Tbilisi City Court will start hearing the case on 16 July. If found guilty, Basilashvili faces up to three years in prison.

Dorokashvili has accused her ex-husband of assaulting her throughout their marriage. Basilashvili, who has pleaded not guilty to the charges, said he would not comment on the matter publicly and would prove his innocence in court.

Dorokashvili told Rustavi 2 that Basilashvili attacked her while she was visiting his parents’ house to pick up their son. She said she did not know the reason for the alleged attack but that it had nothing to do with their divorce settlement, which she said ‘ended in his favour’.

She told TV Imedi that Basilashvili had assaulted her systematically throughout their marriage and that this continued even after their divorce.

‘The violence was permanent. I was thinking it would end after the divorce. I didn’t speak up before because I was protecting the family, you know how it is in Georgia, I was protecting the dignity of the family, I was protecting my son’, said Dorokashvili.

‘However, after the divorce, this is how things continued and it had almost fatal consequences for me and my son.’

She said that after she fled the scene, Basilashvili’s father chased after her and her child with what looked like an axe in his hand.

‘I don’t know what happened to him, maybe he was drunk or something. He ran after me and my son with some kind of weapon in his hand. He says it was a guitar, but I think it was an axe.’

Basilashvili’s lawyer, Irma Chkadua, told journalists on Sunday that if her former father in law had assaulted her, he would have been arrested too. She did not respond to a question about whether a restraining order had been placed against him.

The prosecutor in the case, Natia Guruli, told journalists that a restraining order had indeed been issued against Basilashvili’s father, however, she added that Dorokashvili herself ‘doesn’t admit that there was physical violence from him against her’.

Dorokashvili said she escaped Basilashvili’s parents’ house by jumping into a stranger’s car passing by.

‘False accusations’

On Sunday, Basilashvili’s official Facebook page posted a family statement apologising for the ‘false accusations’ against them.

‘We state with full responsibility that the information about violence doesn’t correspond to the truth and there is no evidence proving such a fact. This is not the first time that Neli [Neka] Dorokashvili, Nikoloz’s former wife, has tried to inflict moral, financial, or reputational harm to Nikoloz and his family’, the statement reads.

The statement said that Dorokashvili had initially refused to sign divorce papers and that after the divorce was formalised, the couple had no relations other than caring for their child.

‘After the divorce, Neli Dorokashvili also groundlessly sued Nikoloz Basilashvili’s mother for violence against her child. After consideration, the court ruled in Basilashvili’s mother’s favour’, the statement said.

Ana Abashidze, the director of Partnership for Human Rights, a local rights group that is representing Dorokashvili, said on Monday that a restraining order against Basilashvili’s mother was issued for psychological violence against her grandson.

She said that the court of Appeals later overturned the restraining order ‘groundlessly, amid stereotypical and prejudicial assumptions’. She added that her organisation planned to appeal this decision.

Later on Sunday, Basilashvili posted another statement on his page in which he said he was confident he’d prove the truth in the court.

‘I’m sorry and I apologise to society for the developments around my family. I always feel your support and love, for which I’m infinitely grateful’, said Basilashvili.

Reactions to the arrest

The Georgian National Olympic Committee addressed the allegations against Basilashvili in a statement on Monday. The committee said the knew Bailashvili as a ‘calm and balanced person’ and added that it was regrettable that his personal reputation had come into question because of these developments.

‘Of course, we condemn any kind of violence, however, we hereby call on all sides to protect the presumption of innocence and avoid ungrounded accusations before the court’s ruling’, they said.

Georgian Public Defender Nino Lomjaria said that her office would be observing the investigation into the alleged violence.

‘I would like to express my support to the woman who has suffered. I call on all governmental bodies to do their best to protect her from physical and psychological violence’, she wrote on Facebook on Sunday.

Others have spoken out in Basilashvili’s defence. Shota Arveladze, a former Georgian Football player who currently manages Uzbek club Pakhtakor Tashkent said that he was against violence, especially against women ‘who make our lives beautiful’, but that he supported Basilashvili.

‘I don’t know him personally, however, I’d like to express my support to him during these hard times’, Arveladze wrote on Facebook on Sunday.

Ana Abashidze, the director of Partnership for Human Rights, said that Basilashvili’s success did not give him the right to assault anyone.

‘Nikoloz Basilashvili is a truly successful person in the world of sports, his achievements are outstanding. However, this doesn’t mean that he is authorised to assault anyone because of his success and that we should be silent because of that’, said Abashidze.

A GAA star who admitted attacking an elderly man with his own walking stick after a row at a chip shop has escaped going to jail.

Judge Paul Kelly told Tyrone player Dean McNally he can consider himself “extremely lucky” after he struck out the charges against him.

McNally (27) previously appeared at Letterkenny District Court in Co Donegal after being told to pay victim Eugene Ferry €2,000.

The court heard there had been a verbal row at a chip shop involving McNally, two of his friends, and Mr Ferry, who was using a walking stick.

The row spilled out onto the street outside the Downings Bay Hotel on the night of March 4, 2017. Once outside, McNally broke Mr Ferry’s walking stick on the ground. Mr Ferry was then pushed to the ground and hurt his hand.

McNally, of Cabhan Alvinn, Pomeroy, Dungannon, Co Tyrone, then threw a part of the walking stick at the elderly man, hitting him on the back. The court heard both McNally and his two friends then began to verbally abuse Mr Ferry.

The victim made a complaint to bouncers who contacted gardaí. Garda Colm McConigley viewed CCTV footage of the attack and was able to identify McNally as the culprit.

McNally’s solicitor, Kieran O’Gorman, said his client never meant to get involved in any row. The court heard he is engaged to be married.

The GAA player was charged with being intoxicated, using threatening and abusive language and also assault.

A victim impact statement was handed into court.

McNally told the court: “I apologise for what happened and I should not have been involved.”

The court was initially told that €500 had been paid to Mr Ferry as compensation, but Mr Ferry said this was not the case.

He added he had been offered €100 but nothing ever came of it. The judge asked if two other accused men involved in the case had appeared before the court.

He said: “I’m curious about the other two individuals. The injured party said he was attacked by three males outside the chip shop.

“Is he covering up for other people is the question I’m asking.”

Garda Inspector Goretti Sheridan told the court it was a bouncer outside the premises who identified McNally and no other people were sought in connection with the attack.

The judge ordered that €2,000 be handed over to Mr Ferry and that another €500 lodged in court by McNally be given to the victim.

“On that basis, I will strike out the charges against him…He can consider himself very lucky,” he added.

Last year, while on a stag party in Las Vegas, McNally was locked up for three weeks after being accused of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl.

“They accused me of touching the bum of a 12-year-old girl while walking down the street. It was completely untrue,” he said later.

Despite maintaining his innocence, he said he was forced to accept a lesser charge of ‘simple battery’ rather than spend two years in jail awaiting trial.

A GAA player – who was once imprisoned in the US after being accused of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl – yesterday pleaded guilty to attacking an elderly man with his walking stick.

Dean McNally appeared at Letterkenny District Court in Co Donegal on Monday charged with a range of offences.

The court heard how there had been a verbal row at a chip shop involving McNally, two of his friends and an elderly gentleman using a walking stick.

The row spilt out onto the street outside the Downings Bay Hotel on the night of March 4 2017.

Outside McNally, who plays for both Tyrone and Kildress, broke Mr Euegene Ferry’s walking stick on the ground.

Mr Ferry was then pushed to the ground during the incident and hurt his hand.

He then threw the other part of the walking stick at the elderly man hitting him in the back.

The court was also told that both McNally and his two friends then began to verbally abuse Mr Ferry.

The victim made a complaint to bouncers who contacted Gardai about the matter.

Garda Colm McConigley viewed CCTV footage of the attack and was able to identify McNally as the culprit.

Solicitor for the accused, of 23 Cabhan Alvinn, Pomeroy, Dungannon, Co Tyrone, Mr Kieran O’Gorman, said his client had no previous convictions.

He said his client was of good character and never meant to get involved in any row.

He is charged with being intoxicated, using threatening and abusive language and also assault.

McNally, aged 27, told the court “I apologise for what happened and I should not have been involved.”

Judge Kelly adjourned the case until April 19th and ordered McNally to pay €2,000 to the victim.

“I accept that he is of good character. If he pays that money on that date I will consider not jeopardising his career,” said Judge Kelly.

Meanwhile, it emerged that McNally spent three weeks in a Las Vegas prison in November 2017 after being accused of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl, charges that he denies.

He was initially told that he could expect a 10-year sentence and a possible life sentence.

McNally said he was forced into accepting a lesser charge of `simple battery’ rather than spend two years in jail awaiting trial.

Speaking to the Sunday World at the time, McNally said the charges were “completely untrue”.

“I was never formally interviewed by police yet there I was in court being told the best I could expect was a 10-year prison sentence,” he said.

McNally had been in Las Vegas on a stag holiday with a group of friends when he was accused of inappropriately touching a 12-year-old who was dressed in a bear costume.

He described the incident to the Sunday World as “the worst thing you could ever be accused of”.

Jeff Moe, a member of Iowa basketball’s 1,000 points club, was arrested in Indianapolis on Monday. He allegedly attacked a local lawmaker during a public hearing.

Moe is a real estate developer in his native Indianapolis. On Monday, he attended a meeting of the Alcohol Beverage Board, also attended by city councilman Jeff Miller.

Miller had previously testified against Moe in a separate liquor license matter. Moe owns a local strip club in Indianapolis.

Jeff Moe faces four charges after allegedly slamming Miller’s head against a wall.

There are discrepancies over what actually happened in the attack. From The Gazette:

Police say Moe grabbed Miller by the throat, and slammed his head against a wall. Moe said he didn’t grab Miller’s neck. He was charged with two felonies and two misdemeanors.

“I grabbed his shirt and shook him,” was what Moe said he did when he was interviewed Wednesday on Indianapolis’ Fox Sports 975 radio station.

“I shook him for five or six seconds.”

Investigators found scratch marks and redness along Miller’s neck, according to court documents. The documents state Moe pushed Miller against a marble wall, and Miller’s head struck the wall twice. Miller was examined by medics on the scene, and released.

Moe faces four charges stemming from the incident: criminal confinement, strangulation, battery resulting in bodily harm and disorderly conduct. He posted a $7,500 bond, and was released after spending Monday in jail.

During the radio interview with FOX Sports 975 Moe accused Miller of “stealing people’s liquor licenses.” The Monday hearing was for a local liquor store called Liquor Barn, and not Moe’s club.

Miller, the congressman, faces legal issues of its own. In November, he was charged with three counts of child molestation.

Moe played basketball at Iowa from 1984-88. He is best known for his big performances against Bobby Knight’s Indiana Hoosiers. He finished his Hawkeyes career with over 1,200 points.

Jeff Moe had his most-newsworthy week in his Indiana home state since he tormented the Indiana Hoosiers as a University of Iowa basketball player.

Moe, an Indianapolis strip club owner and real estate developer, was arrested Monday morning in Indianapolis. He is accused of attacking Marion County/Indianapolis City County Council member Jeff Miller during a public meeting of the Alcoholic Beverage Board of Marion County.

Moe spent the rest of Monday in jail before posting a $7,500 surety bond. He faces charges of criminal confinement, strangulation, battery resulting in bodily harm and disorderly conduct.

Moe was at the meeting to support Indianapolis business Liquor Barn, saying Miller was trying to steal the liquor license for its Meridian Street location. Miller testified against the renewal of the liquor license of Moe’s Indianapolis business, Lenny’s Gentlemen’s Club.

“I went down (to the meeting) to say we live in America. Mr. Miller, quit stealing people’s liquor licenses.”

Moe played at Iowa from 1984-88, scoring 1,248 points. He had 24 points and five assists as a senior in the Hawkeyes’ 104-86 win over UNLV in the second round of the NCAA tournament’s West Regional, a small bit of revenge for Iowa’s loss to the Runnin’ Rebels in the West final the year before.

Moe was recruited out of Indianapolis to Iowa by then-coach George Raveling and flourished under Tom Davis. Moe averaged 11.1 and 12.9 points per game in his junior and senior seasons with Davis as coach. He had some of his biggest games against Indiana.

“It was so long ago,” said Moe, 51. “I did like playing against Indiana. I had two decent games with 25 points and maybe 18. Thirty-five years (30, actually) later, people will tell me ‘Man, you lit us up for 45 points every time.’

“But the one game in ’87 when we broke 100, that was pretty special.”

That was Iowa’s 101-88 win over the then-No. 3 Hoosiers in Iowa City. It was the first time in 466 games a Bob Knight-coached team had allowed 100 points.

“I liked Bobby Knight growing up,” Moe said. “Obviously, his form of discipline did not last past the year 2000. Society has changed.”

In his radio interview, Moe was unapologetic. “I didn’t hurt (Miller).

“If he apologizes for … fraudulently trying to steal my liquor license, I’ll gladly apologize for ruffling his feathers.”

In an unrelated matter, last November Miller was charged with three counts of child-molestation. His pretrial hearing is later this month.

Moe’s club, meanwhile, has “been Lenny’s for 45 years,” Moe told Fox Radio show Query & Schultz. “Ninety-five percent of my work is in commercial real estate.”

Moe said the strip club “sort of fell in my lap” in 2012 as he was purchasing real estate in the area.

He called his Marion County Sheriff’s Office mug shot “horrible.”

“I’ve got to start working out. Owning a strip club, I spend an hour, and hour-and-a-half there. Usually I’ll run into somebody and have a couple beers. Yeah, it’s time I hit the gym.”

WAUKESHA, Wis. – University of Wisconsin-Rock County officials said the university’s men’s basketball coach has been put on administrative leave after being charged with attacking an official after a game at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha on Wednesday night.

Coach Jamal Mosley is facing charges of disorderly conduct and battery, school officials said.

UW-Rock County has released the following statement:

“Mr. Jamal Mosley, University of Wisconsin-Rock County men’s basketball coach, has been placed on administrative leave by UW Colleges following charges of disorderly conduct and battery arising from an incident after the January 3 men’s basketball game versus University of Wisconsin-Waukesha.  An internal investigation by UW Colleges is underway.

Our campus communities are distressed by this unfortunate event and are fully cooperating with law enforcement in Waukesha.  We must also focus on providing resources for our students and on completing the basketball season for the UW-Rock County Rattlers men’s team.”

The official who was involved in the incident said he cannot comment because of the ongoing investigation.

Jeffrey Giese, the commissioner for the Capitol Conference, said the official was supposed to officiate a high school game Friday night, but is unable to because of doctor’s orders. Giese said the attack sent the official to the emergency room for a cut near his eye.

Mosley was hired as the head coach of the men’s basketball team in October 2016. He most recently served as head coach of men’s and women’s basketball at Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton.

He has been a youth camp coordinator for the city of Sun Prairie and ran his own training camps through Breakthrough Basketball.

Mosley is a former Division I basketball player at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Jason Puncheon has arrived in court to face assault charges

Puncheon, 31, arrived at Guildford Magistrates’ Court in Surrey on crutches this morning after he suffered a serious knee-ligament injury in a clash against Man City.

He is accused of swinging his belt at the back of the bouncer’s head and now faces a one-day trial on June 4 after denying causing fear or provocation of violence, and common assault.

A third charge of possession of an offensive weapon was withdrawn by the prosecution.

Gary Bloxsome, defending, told the court Puncheon was targeted by someone inside the club earlier that night.
