Matteo Guendouzi could be facing an FA charge and potential ban after his bust-up at Brighton.

Arsenal midfielder Guendouzi grabbed Brighton forward Neal Maupay by the throat at the end of a stormy clash at the Amex on Saturday and could now face punishment.

Football Association chiefs are waiting to see whether the row is included in referee Martin Atkinson’s report before deciding if they will take action.

The FA could still step in even if it was not seen and take retrospective action by charging Guendouzi which could lead to a fine and suspension.

But it would seem highly likely that Guendouzi gets charged unless Atkinson says he saw the incident and decided not to take action.

Matteo Guendouzi could be facing an FA charge and potential ban

But under the FA’s fast track process, Guendouzi could even be banned before Thursday’s trip to Southampton.

It came after Guendouzi had a running battle with Brighton match winner Maupay who was accused by Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno of causing his knee injury which led to him being stretchered off.

Leno, who is now facing a lengthy lay-off with a serious knee ligament injury, pointed the finger at Maupay after the Brighton striker pushed him and caused him to land awkwardly.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta cleared Maupay of doing it deliberately but the players were incensed and Guendouzi was fuming throughout the game.

Maupay fell to the floor after another incident during the game but TV replays showed that Guendouzi poked him in the stomach.

But the bust-up at the end of the game following Maupay’s winner for Brighton incensed Arsenal and led to Guendouzi having a row.

Maupay said afterwards: “Some of the Arsenal players need to learn humility maybe sometimes. They were talking a lot, particularly one of them.

“I’m sorry about what happened to Bernd Leno, I never meant to hurt him. I wish him a speedy recovery.”

Eels lock Nathan Brown is taking on the judiciary on Tuesday night in a bid to avoid a two-game suspension after being charged for high tackle offence.

Brown was charged with a grade-two careless high tackle over a 64th-minute hit on Roosters lock Victor Radley in Saturday night’s loss by Parramatta at Bankwest Stadium.

The Eels star, who has two non-similar offences over the past two years, is seeking a downgrade of the charge after entering an early guilty plea.

Radley has accepted a fine of $700 for a high shot of his own on Eels skipper Clint Gutherson.

Bulldogs winger Christian Crichton is the only other player charged in round six yet to have his matter resolved.

He could be suspended for two matches for a shoulder charge on Sharks fullback Matt Moylan on Monday night. He has been charged with a grade-one offence for the tackle in the 34th minute but can have the ban halved with an early guilty plea.

Broncos forwards Patrick Carrigan and Tom Flegler have each accepted a one-game suspension after being charged over incidents in Thursday night’s loss to Newcastle in Gosford.

Carrigan was facing a two-match ban over a grade-two conduct charge for his late hit on Knights halfback Mitchell Pearce in the 59th minute. He reduced the ban to one game with an early guilty plea.

Flegler has also be banned one match after he entered an early guilty plea over a 43rd-minute incident involving Newcastle forward Sione Mata’utia.

Dragons winger Jordan Pereira is out for two games for a hit on Corey Thompson in the 23rd minute of St George Illawarra’s win at Suncorp Stadium. He could have been banned for three weeks if he did not enter an early guilty plea.

Tigers trio Harry Grant, Josh Aloiai and Sam McIntyre will avoid suspensions after entering guilty pleas for with grade-one offences in their team’s win over North Queensland.

Warriors hooker Wayde Egan is out of Friday’s clash with Melbourne after entering an early guilty plea over an incident involving Rabbitohs star Latrell Mitchell.

Egan was charged with a grade-two contrary conduct charge after he appeared to rake his hand across Mitchell’s face on Friday.

Panthers five-eighth Jarome Luai has avoided a ban by entering an early guilty plea for a dangerous contact – head/neck charge resulting from a tackle on Melbourne’s Felise Kaufusi.

Bulldogs back Reimis Smith faces a one-match suspension after being hit with a grade one dangerous contact charge during his side’s 22-2 win over the Dragons at Bankwest Stadium on Monday.

Ash Taylor, Sam Lisone and Waqa Blake also received grade one charges, but won’t miss any football.

Smith was charged after making dangerous contact to the head/neck of Dragons winger Mikaele Ravalawa.

The 23-year-old has 30 carry over points and will cop a one match suspension with an early guilty plea or if he contests the charge and loses.

MORE: Paul McGregor safe despite Dragons board meeting

He will likely be replaced in the starting side by Kerrod Holland, who started on the interchange bench against the Dragons.

Smith scored a 70th minute try as the Bulldogs earned their first win of the 2020 season on Monday afternoon.

Elsewhere, Parramatta’s Waqa Blake was charged with a grade one careless high tackle for a shot on Manly’s Danny Levi on Saturday night.

Blake has a good record at the judiciary, so won’t face a suspension.

The 25-year-old entered an early guilty plea and will be hit with a $550 fine.

Taylor and Lisone were both charged with grade one dangerous contact to the head or neck during Gold Coast’s thrilling 28-23 win over the Tigers on Sunday.

Neither player faces suspension or a fine.

The NCAA had a chance to do the right thing on Friday and, in a stunning turn of events, completely missed the mark.

Who saw that one coming?

The punishment that the Committee on Infractions handed down to Oklahoma State on Friday, a one-year postseason ban to go along with scholarship reductions and myriad recruiting sanctions, was wrong and should be utterly terrifying for the other programs that found themselves caught up in the FBI’s investigation into college basketball corruption.

Oklahoma State faced a single Level I violation. It was an unethical conduct charge levied at former assistant coach Lamont Evans, who accepted at least $18,150 in bribes from financial advisors in exchange for peddling influence over one player from Oklahoma State and one player from South Carolina, where Evans was coaching before accepting a job on Brad Underwood’s staff in the spring of 2016. Evans was also accused of giving Jeffery Carroll $300.

That’s it.

Evans provided no competitive advantage for Oklahoma State, unless you consider the $300 he paid to Carroll — who was already on the roster and suspended for three games as a result — a competitive advantage. Evans was lining his pockets. He was not doing this to benefit the basketball program. Technically speaking, the players Evans claimed to have the power of persuasion over were the victims of the crimes that got him sentenced to three months in prison on federal bribery charges. He steered them to financial advisors that were willing to shell out bribe money. He knew nothing about the people that he was telling these players to invest their money with. One of the men Evans accepted bribes from was Marty Blazer, who sparked this entire investigation to try and avoid prison when he was caught by the SEC embezzling millions of dollars from clients.

That’s where Evans was guiding players who trusted him.

The players were the victims.

Despite that, Oklahoma State was still hit with a one-year postseason ban. Evans has been gone for three years. Carroll has been gone for two. Neither the current head coach — Mike Boynton — or the head coach the violations were committed under — Brad Underwood — were mentioned in the Notice of Allegations.

“There were no recruiting or other major violations on the part of the institution,” Oklahoma State said in a statement in November. “There are no allegations involving current student-athletes or coaching staff.”

None of that mattered to the Committee on Infractions.

They dropped the hammer on Oklahoma State, effectively neutering what was the most anticipated OSU season since Marcus Smart returned for his sophomore year. So much for seeing Cade Cunningham play in the NCAA tournament. Hell, we may not see Cunningham play for Oklahoma State, period. He was offered the chance to join the G League prospect pathway program, reportedly for as much money as Jalen Green. If he’s not going to play meaningful games at Oklahoma State, maybe he reconsiders the offer.

“Whatever the best option is for him we’re going to support 100 percent without any reservations,” Boynton said.

This gets to the core of the problem when it comes to NCAA enforcement: They far too often punish players and coaches for violations that they took no part in. What did Cunningham, or anyone else on Oklahoma State’s roster, have to do with Lamont Evans accepting bribes from a white collar felon that had been flipped by the FBI? How was anyone associated with the Oklahoma State athletic department supposed to prevent one assistant coach from accepting those bribes?

“A postseason ban for a bunch of kids that were 15, 16 years old when a lot of this was going on? It’s completely, completely out of bounds,” Boynton said.

He’s not wrong.

A postseason ban is total overkill.

That is the most infuriating part is that the NCAA was actually able to punish the man responsible. That’s not usually the case. Evans received a 10-year show-cause penalty from the NCAA in addition to a three month jail sentence for pleading guilty. His coaching career is effectively over. He’ll never be a Division I head coach. He’ll never coach at a level where he is able to earn a couple hundred grand as an assistant. The person entirely at fault for this situation had his life blown up.

And Oklahoma State still got a postseason ban despite the fact that, as Larry Parkinson of the Committee on Infractions said, “the institution fully cooperated from the moment they learned about the circumstances.”

That should be a major red flag for everyone else caught up in this investigation.

USC, Arizona and Auburn all had an assistant coach plead guilty to similar charges as Evans. Louisville committed their violations while they were on probation from the last scandal the program was embroiled in. Oklahoma State faced one Level I violation. Kansas faces five, and they’ve made quite clear they aren’t going to be as cooperative.

If the Committee on Infractions has set the bar here, everyone else better be ready to catch the book that gets thrown at them.

It will be heard by the Infractions Appeal Committee, the final step in the NCAA infractions process, according to OSU:”The University is stunned by the severity of the penalties and strongly disagrees with them. The penalties do not align with the facts and are unfair and unjust. “The NCAA agreed with OSU that Lamont Evans acted alone and for his own personal gain. Evans was terminated by OSU on Sept. 28, 2017, within 72 hours of learning of allegations against him.”The NCAA also agreed that OSU did not benefit in recruiting, commit a recruiting violation, did not play an ineligible player, and did not display a lack of institutional control. As the report documents, OSU cooperated throughout the process, which lasted two years. “The NCAA appears to have made an arbitrary decision in the sanctions applied to the institution for the egregious actions committed by a former coach that did not result in any benefit for the University.”

  • A prohibition of men’s basketball unofficial visits for two weeks during the fall of 2020 and two weeks during the fall of 2021 (self-imposed by the university). The university also must prohibit unofficial visits for three additional weeks during the fall of 2020, 2021 and/or 2022.
  • A prohibition of men’s basketball telephone recruiting for a one-week period during the 2020-21 academic year (self-imposed by the university). The university also must prohibit telephone recruiting for six additional weeks during the probation period.
  • A reduction in the number of men’s basketball recruiting person days by 12 during the 2019-20 academic year (self-imposed by the university). The university also must reduce the number of recruiting person days by five during the 2020-21 academic year.
  • A 10-year show-cause order for the former associate head coach. During that period, any NCAA member school employing him must restrict him from any athletically related duties unless it shows cause why the restrictions should not apply.
  • A prohibition of the men’s basketball staff from participating in off-campus evaluations for three consecutive days during the summer evaluation periods in 2020 (self-imposed by the university).

The Oklahoma State University Department of Athletics has since released a statement, saying it will file an immediate appeal of the NCAA penalties assessed to the men’s basketball program on Friday.

The deadline for filing the appeal is June 20. It will be heard by the Infractions Appeal Committee, the final step in the NCAA infractions process, according to OSU:

“The University is stunned by the severity of the penalties and strongly disagrees with them. The penalties do not align with the facts and are unfair and unjust.

“The NCAA agreed with OSU that Lamont Evans acted alone and for his own personal gain. Evans was terminated by OSU on Sept. 28, 2017, within 72 hours of learning of allegations against him.

“The NCAA also agreed that OSU did not benefit in recruiting, commit a recruiting violation, did not play an ineligible player, and did not display a lack of institutional control. As the report documents, OSU cooperated throughout the process, which lasted two years.

“The NCAA appears to have made an arbitrary decision in the sanctions applied to the institution for the egregious actions committed by a former coach that did not result in any benefit for the University.”

He was given a March 5 deadline to submit his response — but an FA disciplinary panel is yet to rule on the case.

Tottenham are also waiting to find out if Eric Dier will be banned for the resumption of the season in just two weeks.

Midfielder Dier was charged with improper and/or threatening conduct after jumping into the crowd to confront a fan following the club’s FA Cup exit to Norwich on March 4.

The FA hit him with a charge in late April.

A suspension is also the likely penalty should an independent panel find against the 26-year-old, although police decided he committed no offence.

WAITING GAME

But it is the delay in dealing with Dele’s case which is most puzzling.

SunSport understands the disciplinary panel is able to meet by video.

The independent, three-person panel must rule on whether the midfielder, 24, broke anti-discrimination regulations with his post, which he removed and apologised for.

Speaking at the time of the incident, Jose Mourinho said: “The player understands the gravity of the situation.

“The player is a good guy, the player even in the dressing room has a big Asian friend that he loves.

“So there was no intention at all. He immediately regrets, immediately makes a public apology. I feel it is unnecessary but I am nobody.

“I think he learned the lesson immediately with the embarrassment and he didn’t need  much time to realise again the childish or naivety of the situation.

“I feel unnecessary. I don’t feel we need more than that.”

Sydney Roosters forward Victor Radley will contest a Grade 1 Dangerous Throw charge at the judiciary in a bid to play in Thursday’s match against Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium.

Radley was charged over a 39th minute tackle on South Sydney’s Dane Gagai in last Friday night’s 28-12 win at  Bankwest Stadium.

If a successful case is put forward to the judiciary at Tuesday night’s hearing, which will be held via video conference, Radley will free to play but if found guilty he will receive 135 points demerit points and be suspended for one match.

An early guilty plea would have equated to a one match ban due to loading for a prior recent offence and 15 carry-over points,

Roosters prop Jared Waerea-Hargreaves has entered an early guilty plea for a Grade 1 Careless High Tackle on Rabbitohs player Alex Johnston.

Waerea-Hargreaves received a $1600 fine and is available to play the Broncos.

Brisbane centre Kotoni Staggs will miss the match after entering an early plea for grade-two careless high tackle on Parramatta five-eighth Dylan Brown during last Thursday 34-6 loss at Suncorp Stadium.

The Grade 2 charge carried a two-game suspension for Staggs if found guilty, or a one-game suspension with an early plea, and he will returnfor the Round 5 clash with Manly at the Central Coast.

Grimsby Town midfielder Elliott Whitehouse has been banned for six matches after admitting to a charge of using abusive language directed at an opponent during a fixture against the Cobblers in November of last year.

In addition to his suspension, Whitehouse has been fined £2,000 and must also undertake a face-to-face education course with The FA after admitting a breach of FA Rule E3.

The charge related to the allegation that Whitehouse used abusive and/or insulting words towards Northampton midfielder Alan McCormack in the 72nd minute of a League Two fixture on November 23, 2019. It is alleged that this breach of FA Rule E3 is an ‘aggravated breach’ as defined in Rule E3, as it included a reference to race and/or ethnic origin and/or nationality.

Whitehouse was charged by the FA last month and admitted directing abuse considered ‘extremely offensive’ to the traveller community in the second-half of the aforementioned fixture, which was won 2-0 by the Cobblers.

In response, Grimsby told BBC Look North: “We deplore any actions that are deemed to be of a racist nature, whether they are by a player, a member of staff or by a spectator.

“First and foremost he admitted it without any reservation and was extremely sorry for what he had done.”

The 26-year-old midfielder was released by Grimsby earlier this week.
