The Eastern Kentucky University football player charged with body slamming a Grove City police officer has been suspended from the team.

GROVE CITY, Ohio — The Eastern Kentucky University football player charged with body slamming a Grove City police officer has been suspended from the team.

According to court records, Michael Harris is facing a felony charge of assault and misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest, obstructing official business and disorderly conduct while intoxicated.

“Understanding that details of the incident are still under investigation, and, abiding by FERPA laws and regulations, we must respect the privacy of our students,” the university said in a statement to 10TV. “When the facts are established, and the investigation complete, Eastern Kentucky University and EKU Athletics will decide how to move forward responsibly.”

Police said on Monday, they were called to a business because of a disturbance with an aggressive man who did not work there and wouldn’t leave.

After officers responded to the business on North Meadows Drive, officers believed Harris was intoxicated and did not know where he was or know anyone in the area, according to court records.

In the video recorded by a camera on a Grove City police cruiser, Harris can be seen fighting back as officers tried to talk to him, lunging at officers. He then can be seen lifting one of the officers up and bringing him to the ground.

Officers were finally able to get him in handcuffs.

Harris is a redshirt sophomore for Eastern Kentucky University’s football program.

A linebacker for Eastern Kentucky University was arrested on Tuesday in Ohio after he body slammed a police officer who was trying to put him in handcuffs. Michael Harris, a redshirt sophomore and Auburn transfer, faces felony assault charges and misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct while intoxicated, obstructing official business and resisting arrest.

Video from a Grove City, Ohio police cruiser, which was first obtained by 10TV WBNS, shows Harris putting his hands up as officers confront him. He then puts on his hood and tries to enter his stopped car, but before he can enter an officer shoves him against his car and tries to hold him while Harris is bent over at the waist. Harris then lifts the officer up in the air and falls to the ground on top of him seconds later. A third officer arrives to get the player off of the body-slammed cop, and put Harris in handcuffs.

Court records state that Harris was intoxicated and did not know where he was or know anyone in the area, according to officer statements. Sources for 10TV told the station that cops were originally called because there was “an aggressive man who did not work there and wouldn’t leave” a business.

Harris spent two seasons at Auburn before transferring to Eastern Kentucky. He totaled four tackles and one force fumble in his two years playing for the Tigers. Harris’ arraignment was scheduled for Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, police said they filed charges of homicide and tampering with evidence against 20-year-old Connor Henry. He was in custody in Ocean City, Maryland, awaiting an extradition hearing.

According to a criminal complaint, police interviewed a confidential informant who told them that Connor Henry shot Wise during an argument in the garage of the Henrys’ home on Adams Street, where the informant and several other people had been drinking and smoking marijuana.

“Amari Wise arrived by himself. They were hanging out for approx. 10-15 minutes when Wise started arguing with another male,” police said in the complaint. “The argument became heated and Wise was standing over the other male, who was seated on a couch. Another informant provided a description of the incident that “was relatively the same” but said that Wise’s gun was “partially removed from the fanny pack when Connor Henry shot him,” police said in the complaint.

“Amari did not deserve what they did to him,” said Dorothy Wise Weathersbe, aunt of Wise.

Henry will be extradited back to New Castle in the next couple of days.

Henry’s father, 47-year-old Todd Henry, is in jail in New Castle. He faces three criminal charges including tampering with evidence.

A witness told police that the day after Wise was killed, Henry’s father was power washing the garage floor.

Weathersbe said she believes more people were involved in her nephew’s death.

“They need to pick up everybody that’s involved,” she said. “When I say everybody, I mean everybody.”

Chief Salem dispelled rumors that the suspects are his family members. The chief said he has no relationship with Connor and Todd Henry, but he said his great grandmother and someone in their family were close friends and possibly relatives.

When her body was found it took almost one week to formally identify Ms Cartwright, due to the bruising she had suffered. She had sustained head injuries and her wrists were bound.

Her death captured the hearts of the local community, which held a candlelit vigil to pay their respects in the days after her body was found.

“This was a young woman who was brutalised, murdered and dumped in a park in a callous act,” Homicide Squad Commander Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty said.

On Wednesday Ms Cartwright’s brother Ben said: “Nicole was very much loved as a sister and daughter, a cherished member of our family.”

He said his family grieves daily for his sister and “the life she never got to live. We are still struggling to comprehend that she will never be coming home.”

Ms Cartwright lived with her parents at Lansvale in Sydney’s west.

Friends described her as “a beautiful girl, who wouldn’t even hurt a fly.”

She was a lover of dogs and a regular user of online dating applications, classifieds, and social media, all of which she used to meet people.

Investigations into six such dating platforms are ongoing. They are not believed to be mainstream dating apps such as Tinder.

Police made two public appeals for information about Ms Cartwright and her whereabouts at the time of her death. The second appeal was attended by her mother Brenda, father Terry and her brother Ben and his wife Jackie.

Public transport CCTV images and Ms Cartwright’s Opal card were critical in leading police to map out her movements in her final days.

On September 30 Ms Cartwright was seen at Museum railway station, later meeting up with a group in Paddington around 9.45pm. She was then seen walking with a friend on Flinders Street about 10pm before catching an Uber on Moore Park Road about 12.30am on October 1.

Ms Cartwright then travelled to the vicinity of Robson Park on Crescent Street, Haberfield. It is alleged she was headed to meet Mr Pietrobon, who was allegedly the last person to see her alive.

Subsequent forensic testing found traces of methylamphetamine in her system. However, a post mortem was unable to determine the exact cause of death.

Both public appeals garnered a number of tips, including people who had met Ms Cartwright on a casual basis in the period leading up to her death.

Detective Superintendent Doherty said both community assistance and forensic evidence allegedly linked Mr Pietrobon to the crime scene and Ms Cartwright’s body.

“It will be alleged this man took her from an address to the reserve and dumped her body … it is a callous and heinous criminal act and a tragedy for the family,” he said.

He said the accused allegedly used a number of cars in the process of discarding Ms Cartwright’s body.

It took almost two years to build the alleged case against Mr Pietrobon, but his arrest on Wednesday was far quicker.

The 51-year-old walked straight into the hands of arresting officers at Parramatta police station, where he was attending on an unrelated matter.

He was refused bail and will appear at Parramatta Local Court on Thursday.

On the one year anniversary of her death last year, Ben Cartwright pleaded for information from the public and delivered a message to those responsible.

“To the person who did this, you have cut short Nicole’s life, destroyed our family and shattered our heart.”

The Malta Football Referees Association has criticised a court ruling that condemned Sannat Lions player Antoine Camilleri to a €100 fine, a one-year ban from entering a football ground after he assaulted a referee during Saturday’s GFA Division Two match at the Kerċem Stadium.

Camilleri attacked assistant referee Andrea Pavia in the dying minutes of Saturday’s match between Sannat Lions and Oratory Youths, after he was just sent off for a second bookable offence.

Camilleri pleaded guilty on Sunday to charges of threatening and slightly injuring a person as well as threatening at attacking another person, breaching the peace and using offensive language.

The MFRA opened its statement by thanking the Malta Football Association for the support it showed and believes that the local governing body of football’s disciplinary body will do what the Gozo Court failed on Sunday, “to hand Camilleri a ban that he duly deserves.”

“The committee of the MFRA is ordering its members, who amount to almost a 100 per cent of the officials present in Maltese football, to dismiss any appointment of matches where Antoine Camilleri could play once his suspension comes to an end,” the MFRA said.

“The behaviour of some of the Sannat Lions FC fans during this attack was also unacceptable after they were seen throwing beer and spitting at the official who was grounded after the attack.

“Hours after this attack, the match officials continued to receive threatening messages on social media. Therefore, in a sign of solidarity with the game officials, the MFRA committee is ordering its members not to officiate matches involving Sannat Lions with immediate effect.

“These directives will remain into effect until the MFRA issues other instructions.”

The brother of New York Giants cornerback Janoris Jenkins was arrested Wednesday and charged with aggravated manslaughter after a body was discovered Tuesday at the player’s home in New Jersey. If convicted of the felony charge, William H. Jenkins could receive a sentence of 10 to 30 years in prison.

Jenkins, 34, was reportedly arrested after being detained in Ontario County, N.Y., on an alleged parole violation. He is awaiting likely extradition to New Jersey, where Bergen County authorities had labeled him a “person of interest” in the case.

The body was identified as that of Roosevelt Rene, a 25-year-old music producer who is described as a Jenkins family friend.

Janoris Jenkins, 29, reportedly has been in Florida, where he is from, since Giants minicamp ended earlier this month. It is not clear how Rene, who produced under the name Trypps Beatz, died and an autopsy is pending by the Bergen County Medical Examiner’s office. Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network reported that police are investigating the death at the Fair Lawn, N.J., home as a “possible strangulation/suffocation.”

A worker discovered Rene’s body in the basement, according to TMZ, and Fair Lawn Police Sgt. Brian Metzler told NJ.com that police were summoned at 10:22 a.m. Members of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and Bergen County Sheriff’s Office were also on scene and Metzler added that police had never been called to the home before. No other details about the investigation were given.

A neighbor who identified herself to NJ.com only as Debbie said that Jenkins lives at the home with his brother and the website reported that investigators were combing through a white Lexus sedan with Florida plates and a Land Rover.

Jenkins, who raps under the name Rabbit, has been with the Giants since 2016. He was a second-round pick by the Rams in 2012. ESPN reported that Jenkins’s attorneys were advising him to remain in Florida. The Giants said they were aware of the report and were monitoring the situation.

William Jenkins has been arrested at least seven times previously, according to court records obtained by NJ.com, including in 2002 at the age of 18. Since then, he has spent a total of nearly seven years behind bars, with a 63-month stint that began after a 2011 arrest for possession and sale of a controlled substance.

ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. (WAVY) – The Isle of Wight Sheriff’s Office has released body camera video of traffic stop that put a former Virginia State University women’s basketball player behind bars.

Officials say they stopped a car on Route 460 earlier this week. One deputy tells WAVY-TV he clocked the driver going 68 mph in a 55 mph zone on Feb. 12.

“You got your driver’s license?” the deputy asked the driver.

“No, I got nothing,” the driver answered. “What am I being pulled over for?”

news-app-download-apple-350x50news-app-download-android-350x50

Deputies say the driver, identified as Shonnice Vaughn and her passenger, Natasha Bowman, weren’t willing to cooperate.

“Don’t make this harder than it has to be,” the deputy said to them in the video.

“This particular case the deputy was met with a lot of resistance from the individuals,” said Isle of Wight Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant James Pope.

Things became serious during the traffic stop when the deputy noticed something on the floor of the car.

“Where is the gun at?” the deputy asked Vaughn and Bowman.

“We don’t have the gun,” Bowman answered.

“Why is there a holster?” the deputy asked.

The video shows Vaughn making a phone call to her college basketball coach and then she rolls up the window.

Vaughn was on the Virginia State University basketball team. VSU Spokeswoman Pamela Turner said Vaughn has been off the team for a couple weeks now. It was Vaughn’s decision to leave the team.

After both women were out of the car, deputies found a gun they say belonged to Vaughn.

“The stop was for a speeding charge,” Pope added. “It’s releasable on a summons. She would have been issued a summons and released on her business.”

Vaughn was charged with speeding, concealing a weapon, obstruction of justice and driving without a license. Bowman was also charged with concealing a weapon.

Both suspects made court appearances Wednesday morning.

They were each given a $2,000 bond and will be back in court in April.

ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. (WAVY) – The Isle of Wight Sheriff’s Office has released body camera video of traffic stop that put a Virginia State University women’s basketball player behind bars.

Officials say they stopped a car on Route 460 Monday night.  One deputy tells 10 On Your Side he clocked the driver going 68 mph in a 55 mph zone.

“You got your driver’s license?” the deputy asked the driver.

“No I got nothing,” the driver answered.  “What am I being pulled over for?”

She is no longer listed on the roster.

To say the news of charges being laid against people connected to the Aquanita Racing banner for alleged treatment of horses on race day has rocked racing is an understatement.

The scale of the Aquanita business and its unique set-up make the organisation a fundamental player in the racing industry.

Designed so trainers can concentrate on the core business of training while Aquanita managed the administrative side of the business, there are close to 300 horses listed on the organisation’s website as under their care.

Two of the trainers charged, Robert Smerdon and Tony Vasil, have won a VRC Oaks, Derby and Caulfield Cup between them and have been leading trainers in the state for nearly two decades.

Now, after an inquiry that started in October last year and remains ongoing, Smerdon and Vasil face charges for engaging, 115 and seven times respectively, in “a practice that was dishonest, corrupt or fraudulent, improper or dishonourable, in that he was a party to the administration of alkalinising agents and/or medications to a horse or horses on a race day”.

They are serious charges with the allegations regarding Smerdon stretching from June 2010 to October 2017, while Vasil’s charges relate to alleged practices between 2010 and 2013.

Smerdon trained Mosheen to victory in the 2011 VRC Oaks, while Vasil’s high point came much earlier when he trained champion stayer Elvstroem to victory in both the 2003 VRC Derby and 2004 Caulfield Cup.

Trainers Trent Pennuto and Liam Birchley have also been charged as well as employees and former employees of the Smerdon and Vasil, Greg and Denise Nelligan, Daniel Garland and Stuart Webb, who trained Yosei to group 1 wins.

The total number of charges laid against the eight people is 271.

What it means for the Aquanita business in both the short term and the long term is anyone’s guess as the stewards seek legal advice on the continued involvement in racing of those charged until the hearing.

Until that decision is made, any ramifications for the horses being trained under Aquanita remain an open question.

Aquanita has a complex administrative structure that allows individual trainers to operate under the Aquanita umbrella, so the exact impact of any decision to stand aside trainers remained unclear last night.

Adding to the significance of the announcement is the fact one of Aquanita’s board members is Melbourne Racing Club chairman Mike Symons.

Symons denied any suggestions he was aware of any wrongdoing soon after news of an inquiry became public and there is also no suggestion he is under any suspicion of wrongdoing.

What Symons won’t deny is that the charges against people racing horses as part of the Aquanita set-up are serious enough to shake the industry to its foundations.
