The Albuquerque Police Department’s records staff initially told the Journal they could not find the report when it was requested last week, but an APD spokesman released it Monday.

Both Bragg’s name as the suspect and the victim’s name are mostly – although not entirely – redacted throughout the report. However, enough of the details of the allegation can be read to understand that on Nov. 5, a 20-year-old woman reported that after an evening of drinking and partying on Aug. 10, 2019, Bragg allegedly held her down on a bed, kept kissing her and tried to unbutton her pants multiple times throughout the night.

According to the report, the woman told investigators she “was in fear that Carlton was going to rape her.”

Bragg, when interviewed by police on Dec. 5, said the woman came on to him that night because “he was a tall basketball player” and that it was “not the first time,” according to the report.

As part of the investigation, police took into evidence several videos the woman recorded on her phone on the night in question – video that police reviewed and handed over to the Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office.

Bragg has not been charged with a crime and UNM on Friday said that after a review of the case, it feels confident in reinstating him.

A second Lobo basketball player – J.J. Caldwell – remains suspended after an allegation of violence with an ex-girlfriend at Lobo Village on Dec. 14. Caldwell has not been charged with a crime, either.

UNM will not comment on why it decided to reinstate Bragg. It has said it was not made aware of the incident until Dec. 19 when it was told of the allegations against both Caldwell and Bragg.

……………………………………………………….

The police report indicates witnesses in the Bragg case, including at least one athlete from another UNM Lobo team, were interviewed by police in late November and early December. The case was investigated by the Albuquerque Police Department sex crimes unit before being forwarded to the DA’s Office for possible prosecution for attempted criminal sexual penetration.

On Friday, the 2nd Judicial District Attorney’s Office sent the review of both cases out of its office in Albuquerque to the 12th Judicial District Attorney’s Office in Alamogordo. Bernalillo County District Attorney Raúl Torrez’s wife, Nasha Torrez, is the Dean of Students at UNM and handles all student discipline matters. Last week, she was named as a defendant in a lawsuit filed by Caldwell against UNM, claiming the school violated his right to due process.

According to the incident report on Bragg released Monday, the woman visited the Family Advocacy Center on Nov. 5, 2019, to report an attempted rape.

She said that almost three months earlier – on Aug. 10 – she had gone to the Salt Yard bar with her friend, her friend’s boyfriend (Bragg) and another friend. She said she doesn’t usually drink, but that night she had two shots of tequila before they went out.

After the Salt Yard closed, the group went to an after party and continued to drink. At some point, they decided the woman would sleep at Bragg’s girlfriend’s apartment and Bragg’s girlfriend would sleep at another apartment in the same complex.

The woman said she was lying on her friend’s bed, looking at her phone, when (name redacted) arrived at the apartment and let himself in. She said (redacted) placed all of his weight on her back and “reached around to the front of her pants trying to get to her button. He began kissing her neck and playing with her hair.”

She said she told him to stop, and that she was seeing one of his Lobo basketball teammates, and he was dating her friend.

She said that he stopped and he told her that it would not happen again.

……………………………………………………….

But later on, she said he returned to the apartment, “pushed her on the bed and tried to take off her pants six times throughout the night. He wouldn’t allow her to get up off the bed and held her down with his body weight.”

The reports describes audio and video taken by the woman. In the video, Bragg appears to be trying to kiss the woman more than once and she is heard telling him to stop.

At one point, Bragg appears to be standing over the woman and telling her he is not really in a relationship when a knock can be heard on the door and a female asks: “Are you good? What’s going on in there?” The woman responds: “Nothing. Are you good? We will talk in the morning.”

The report also indicates that after initially talking with police on the phone, Bragg asked to meet with an officer in person, but then did not show up for the in-person interview.

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico — New Mexico forward Carlton Bragg Jr. has been dismissed from the Lobos basketball team following his arrest on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and possession of less than an ounce of marijuana.

Coach Paul Weir released a statement late Sunday, hours after Bragg’s arrest, saying the embattled player needed to focus on his personal well-being.

“The game of life is much more important than basketball right now,” Weir said. “I still believe in him and hope this next step will allow him to develop into a strong, responsible young adult while also completing his degree here at UNM.”

The arrest came nine days after Bragg, 24, was reinstated to the team following a three-game suspension while university officials investigated sexual misconduct allegations against him by another student. Bragg has not been charged in connection with that incident, which occurred in August, although the Bernalillo County district attorney’s office sent the case to the district attorney’s office in Alamogordo because of a conflict of interest.

Bragg, who was averaging 12.6 points and 10.3 rebounds in 15 games in his second season at New Mexico (15-3), was released from custody later Sunday.

He was detained around 1:20 a.m. in Albuquerque at a sobriety checkpoint, according to a police report.

Officers saw that Bragg “had bloodshot watery eyes and an odor of alcohol emanating from his facial area,” the report said. “Carlton admitted drinking 2 glasses of wine between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m.” The Lobos had beaten Air Force only hours earlier.

Bragg was put through field sobriety testing and “signs of impairment were present during his performance of the sobriety tests,” after which he was arrested and a small amount of marijuana was discovered on his body, the report said.

Bragg later refused to take a breath-alcohol test, police said.

It was not known if he had an attorney who could comment on his behalf.

New Mexico is Bragg’s third school. He played at Kansas, where he was suspended after being arrested and charged with battery against a woman in 2016, although that charge was dropped and the woman who made the claims was later charged after prosecutors reviewed surveillance video.

He also attended Arizona State but was removed from the team in his first semester for violating an unspecified team rule.

Bragg had 11 points and seven rebounds Saturday night in the Lobos’ 84-78 victory.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Just a month after Lobo Basketball player, Carlton Bragg, was accused of rape, he now faces charges in a new case. Police say he drove drunk and was later found with marijuana.

Just hours after a big conference win, Bragg was arrested at the intersection of Coal and Broadway during a DWI checkpoint.

Police say he was stopped early Sunday morning. Officers say they smelled the alcohol on him and they say he admitted to drinking two glasses of wine earlier in the night.

Carlton Bragg

Police noted the senior forward still had his athletic shoes on. After doing poorly on a field sobriety test, Bragg was arrested for aggravated DWI for refusing to take a breath test.

While Bragg was booked into MDC, an officer found marijuana on him. He was also charged with possession. A police report also says Bragg was “irate” with the officer who arrested him.

The arrest comes just hours after the Lobos improved to 12-0 at The Pit while beating the Falcons. Bragg’s arrest didn’t sit well with many people in Albuquerque who say he should be held accountable for his actions off court.

“The basketball players are role models. You know, I have a 13 year old son who looks up to these players,” says Rebecca Ballingall.

Last month, Bragg was suspended from the team after he was accused of attempted rape. He did not play in three games, but was cleared from suspension and was able to rejoin the team earlier this month.

Bragg has since been released from MDC. Calls to Bragg for comment were not returned.

UNM’s Athletic Department released a statement today saying:

“The UNM Athletic Department has been notified that there was an incident regarding senior Carlton Bragg Jr. early this morning. The department is aware of the situation is looking into it further. At this time, there will be no additional comments from anyone at UNM.”

A bond arraignment for Bragg’s DWI and possession charge is set for January 27.

New Mexico Lobos forward Carlton Bragg Jr. was arrested early Sunday morning in Albuquerque, New Mexico and is facing charges of aggregated DWI and possession of marijuana, per a report from the Albuquerque Journal.

The arrest occurred at 1:35 a.m. MST, per the police report obtained by the Journal. Bragg was then booked shortly before 5 a.m. MST.

“The UNM Athletic Department has been notified that there was an incident regarding senior Carlton Bragg Jr. early this morning,” the school said in a statement supplied to the Journal on Sunday. “The department is aware of the situation is looking into it further. At this time, there will be no additional comments from anyone at UNM.”

This is not the first time that Bragg has recently encountered legal trouble. Bragg was suspended for three games earlier in the season after it was revealed that Bragg was under investigation for attempted rape. According to a police report, a woman had gone to the Family Advocacy Center to report the incident in November. She said that after a night of drinking in August, Bragg tried multiple times to forcefully unbutton her pants without her consent, per KOB Channel 4 in Albuquerque.

Bragg told police that nothing inappropriate happened. He has not been charged with a crime and the team reinstated him on Jan. 3.

Bragg began his collegiate career at Kansas, where he also encountered trouble with the law. Bragg was suspended from the Jayhawks in 2016 after he was arrested and charged with battery against a woman. That charge, however, was dropped, and the woman who alleged the battery was later charged with a crime after prosecutors reviewed video surveillance of the incident.

Following his sophomore season, Bragg transferred to Arizona State, but he lasted less than a semester before being kicked off the team due to an unspecified violation before heading to New Mexico.

Bragg is averaging 12.6 points per game on 53.7 percent shooting from the field to go along with 10.3 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game this season for the Lobos. He is shooting 81.1 percent from the free-throw line. Last season in his first year with the Lobos, he averaged 10.5 points per game on 49.7 percent shooting with 8.8 rebounds.

“Carlton is obviously our biggest player, shot block, he’s our best rebounder,” Lobos coach Paul Weir said. “When you lose someone of that profile, it changes your team.”

During two years at Kansas from 2015-2017, Bragg scored a total of 305 points. Bragg averaged 5.2 points and reeled in 4.1 rebounds a game as a sophomore. He was ranked as the No. 24 overall recruit in the 2015 recruiting class, per the 247Sports Composite rankings.

“I really enjoyed my time here at Kansas,” Bragg said shortly after he transferred. “Kansas has the best fans and I do love the program. This past year didn’t go as well as I thought it would and it’s in my best interest to get a fresh start. I want to thank my teammates, coaches and the fans for all their support these past two years. I will always cheer for the Jayhawks.”

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – New details reveal why Lobo basketball player Carlton Bragg was suspended from the team last month.

According to a police report, Bragg is accused of attempted rape.

According to that report, a woman says in August after a night of drinking, Bragg held her down, kissed her and kept trying to unbutton her pants.

She says she kept saying no and told him she was his girlfriend’s best friend. She told police she was afraid she was going to be raped and recorded the alleged incident on her cellphone.

Bragg has not been charged with a crime and the District Attorney in Alamogordo is investigating because the wife of Bernalillo County DA Raul Torrez is the University of New Mexico’s Dean of Students.

Bragg served a three-game suspension from the Lobos, but has since been cleared to play and is expected to play Tuesday when the Lobos take on Fresno State.
