ATHENS, Ga. — A former NFL player and University of Georgia football standout has been arrested and charged with raping a student at his alma mater, authorities said.

Bacarri Jamon Rambo, 29, was charged Monday with rape, news outlets reported. He was being held at the Athens-Clarke County Jail without bond Tuesday afternoon.

Athens-Clarke County Police responded to a report of a rape Saturday near the university at an apartment complex where Rambo reportedly lives.

The 21-year-old student told police she was attacked and knew the man who raped her, showing them an Instagram profile with Rambo’s name on it. Further details weren’t immediately released.

Rambo has been a graduate assistant coach with the Georgia football program the past two seasons.

His attorney, Kim Stephens, said the arrest stems from an incident between Rambo and his accuser Friday night at the apartment complex, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Stephens said the woman told police she “didn’t consent to intercourse to some degree” but Rambo said she did.

“He cooperated with police when they came out,” Stephens said. “It’s been a fast turnaround. They didn’t wait for any scientific evidence to come back or anything before they took warrants.”

Rambo was an All-American safety at Georgia and shares the program record for interceptions with 16. He was selected by the Washington Redskins in the sixth round of the 2013 NFL draft and also played with the Buffalo Bills and the Miami Dolphins, with his last appearance in a game in 2016.

Western Bulldogs young gun Bailey Smith has been fined by police for breaching COVID-19 restrictions as the AFL club attempts to get to the bottom of vice-captain’s Lachie Hunter’s wild Thursday night.

Teammate Billy Gowers was also given a warning for his involvement in a series of events where Hunter allegedly crashed into four cars.

Victoria Police confirmed to AAP in a statement on Saturday that a “23-year-old South Yarra man has been given a warning for breaching the directions issued by the chief health officer” and “a 19-year-old Malvern East man has been served by post with a fine”.

The Bulldogs say they are taking Hunter’s alleged drink-driving incident “very seriously” but are yet to decide on any punishment for the premiership midfielder.

The club discussed the matter at a scheduled board meeting on Friday and are trying to determine the exact circumstances before handing out sanctions.

Hunter, 25, was charged with breaching stay-at-home restrictions and fined $1652 after he allegedly crashed into four cars at Middle Park about 8.45pm on Thursday.

When officers arrived, the Toyota was empty and the 25-year-old had left the scene – driven away by 19-year-old teammate Bailey Smith.

Victoria Police said Hunter was found at 23-year-old teammate Billy Gowers’ South Yarra residence and blew a breath test reading of 0.123.

Sources close to Hunter have since explained to 7NEWS.com.au the circumstances behind the teammates’ involvement in the events.

Hunter went for a drive from his home in Middle Park, where he lives with his fiancee.

Sources believe he had a relatively small amount of alcohol there, but left following a disagreement.

Hunter is alleged to have collided with the parked cars but did not flee the scene, instead giving his licence details to at least two houses in a pleasant manner.

One of the parked cars belonged to Smith’s girlfriend’s parents – where Smith happened to be on the night.

Smith drove Hunter to Gowers’ South Yarra house.

Sources say Hunter and Smith are not best mates, explaining the younger teammate’s involvement was a coincidence by virtue of location.

Hunter is alleged to have continued drinking at Gowers’ house, where he later recorded a reading of 0.123 after police arrived.

He will be charged with drink driving and other traffic offences.

Hunter is believed to have stayed at his sister’s house on Thursday night after leaving Gowers’ home.

A witness told 7NEWS on Friday he heard an “enormous bang” before he stepped outside and “just saw the carnage”.

“The five cars all at an angle, like dominos. My pest control truck was one of them,” he said.

The Western Bulldogs said they were “aware of an incident involving Lachie Hunter on Thursday evening”.
