NBA player J.R. Smith says he ‘whooped’ a man who broke his car window amid L.A. unrest

On Sunday, Smith said to a camera in a video he shared that “one of these little [expletive] white boys didn’t know where he was going and broke my [expletive] window in my truck. Broke my [expletive] — this is a residential area, there wasn’t no stores over here, none of that [expletive] — broke my window.

“I chased him down and whooped his ass,” Smith continued. “So if the footage comes out and y’all see it, I chased him down and whooped his ass. He broke my window.”

Of the more than 2,500 arrests over the weekend related to protests in two dozen U.S. cities, nearly a fifth were in Los Angeles, according to a tally by The Washington Post. That city’s mayor, Eric Garcetti, said Saturday that the National Guard was being deployed there “to maintain peace and safety,” and on Sunday he extended a citywide, overnight curfew.

Smith was spotted in Los Angeles on Saturday riding a bicycle along with former Cleveland Cavaliers teammate LeBron James, who now plays for the Los Angeles Lakers. Another former Cavs teammate, Jordan Clarkson of the Utah Jazz, posted a photo Saturday that appeared to show Smith, wearing a mask, joining him and others in walking with protesters.

Smith posted a photo Saturday, tagged as having been in Hollywood, that showed several protesters atop a burned-out car. He wrote in a caption, “NO JUSTICE! NO PEACE!”

Smith’s remarks Sunday echoed accusations that white extremists have taken advantage of the unrest to engage in acts of violence and destruction.

“I’m upset, enraged, because once again, white people are co-opting a movement that’s built by black folks,” a community organizer in Minneapolis told the Daily Beast.

Smith asserted that what he did to the alleged window-breaker was not a “hate crime.”

“I ain’t got no problem with nobody who ain’t got a problem with me,” the 15-year NBA veteran said. “There’s a problem with the [expletive] system, that’s it. … He didn’t know whose window he broke, and he got his ass whooped.”

Smith, 34, has been a free agent since he was released in July by the Cavaliers, whom he helped win an NBA title in 2016. His comments Sunday came two years to the day after he committed a memorable gaffe while playing for Cleveland in the 2018 Finals.

Teens charged with stealing James O’Connor’s car after chase

Four teenagers have been charged with stealing Australian rugby union star James O’Connor’s car after a police chase which ended at an inner Brisbane shopping centre.

The three boys and a girl, aged 14-15, are facing multiple charges after Wallabies and Queensland Reds player O’Connor’s white Land Rover was allegedly stolen from an Auchenflower home on Monday.

The teens then allegedly used the car to speed through Brisbane’s south on Tuesday when police spotted it in Inala.

It was tracked by police helicopter on the Logan Motorway to Larapinta about 2.30pm.

“The vehicle was tracked as it continued to allegedly be driven dangerously throughout local streets and suburbs, travelling through red lights,” police said in a statement.

They allegedly drove into the car park at Toowong Village in Brisbane’s inner-west, from where they are accused of ditching the vehicle and making a run for the train station.

“A short foot pursuit commenced and the four were taken into custody without incident,” police said.

They have been charged with one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, burglary and commit and indictable offence and receiving tainted property.

They are expected to face the Brisbane Children’s Court on a later date.

O’Connor, a veteran of 52 tests, is the second Brisbane-based sports star to have his car stolen allegedly by youths.

AFL forward Charlie Cameron allegedly had his Mercedes taken by a local gang in March.

B.C. man faces 8 charges in Surrey car crash that killed student athlete

A 19-year-old Surrey man is facing eight criminal charges including dangerous driving causing death in connection with a crash that killed a university soccer player and injured three others last year.

Dilpreet Sandhu was formally charged on Monday with offences that also include failing to stop at the scene of a crash and dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

Simon Fraser University soccer player Brandon Bassi, 19, was fatally injured in a single-vehicle crash in the Newton neighbourhood shortly after midnight on May 18, 2019. At the time of the collision, police reported that four people had been hurt while two had fled the scene.

“This collision had a significant impact on the community due to the tragic loss of a young person’s life,” Surrey RCMP Sgt. Ian MacLellan said in a press release.

“We’re pleased that the hard work of the officers has resulted in charges being approved.”

Bassi was a first-year student in SFU’s faculty of arts and sciences. At the time of his death, the head coach of the school’s soccer team described him as a “tremendous individual” and an “outstanding teammate, student and friend.”

Sandhu is scheduled to make his first appearance on the charges on Aug. 31 in Surrey provincial court.

Police say that McFadden resisted arrest during the incident that ended with windows broken out of his car.

TMZ obtained police body camera footage of the arrest on Monday that shows all of the above to be true. And more.

Wild video shows McFadden driving his car into the wall of the restaurant while passed out at the wheel before officers scramble to detain him and prevent further damage.

The video starts with an officer knocking on the driver’s side window as McFadden is clearly asleep at the wheel. The car is running, and an officer notes that it’s in drive.

When McFadden doesn’t respond to their knocks, officers begin shaking the SUV to try get his attention.

“Is he alive?” one officer asks.

The SUV then takes off and crashes into the side of the Whataburger. The wheels continue to spin as the nose of the car is wedged against the brick wall. Officers then begin to slam their flashlights into his windows to try to break into the car.

Another angle (at the 3-minute mark of the video) from an officer’s camera at the passenger window confirms that McFadden was indeed unconscious when he apparently hit the gas and slammed into the Whataburger.

An officer eventually got the driver’s side door open, when McFadden woke up, clearly confused. He resisted the officers’ attempt to detain him prompting one to pull his Taser out.

McFadden then followed officers’ orders to get on the ground, where he was handcuffed and detained.

McFadden sentenced to four days in jail

In February, McFadden was sentenced to four days in jail after pleading guilty to driving while intoxicated.

He was charged with with driving with a BAC of greater than or equal to .15. A resisting arrest charge that carried up to two years in prison was dismissed as part of the plea deal.

McFadden, 32, played 10 seasons in the NFL from 2008-17.

A first-round pick of the Raiders in 2008, McFadden played seven seasons in Oakland before joining the Cowboys in 2015.

He finished his career in Dallas and hasn’t played since the 2017 season.

A drama student accused of mowing down a young mother before ditching her car has admitted she was high on drugs at the time of the alleged hit and run.

Police allege Nakeisha Shaneye Smith, 20, hit Olivia McKay with her Honda on April 26 in Midland, Perth – leaving the mother-of-one with a broken leg.

Smith then allegedly dumped her blue 2005 Honda Accord, leading to a two-and-a-half-week police hunt for the driver.

She appeared in Midland Magistrate’s Court on Thursday where she admitted: ‘I was on drugs’.

Ms McKay was walking with a friend on a footpath about 6.30am when Smith’s Honda mounted the curb and struck her.

Smith, who attends the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, then allegedly drove off.

She was charged with grievous bodily harm with intent after police managed to track her down.

The April 26 incident left mother-of-one Olivia McKay so badly injured she needed to have her ankle pinned back together

The court heard Smith and Ms McKay were in the same friendship circle, but the pair aren’t close.

Ms Smith’s lawyer said her client planned to check in to a Carlisle drug rehabilitation facility once released from custody.

Magistrate Kevin Tavener said despite the charges being serious, he granted Smith bail after a police prosecutor agreed to it with strict conditions.

The incident left Ms McKay so badly injured she needed to have her ankle pinned back together.

The young mother said she only remembered waking in excruciating pain.

‘I don’t remember anything other than waking up… I was screaming, I’ve never been in so much pain before in my life,’ she told The West Australian.

Smith will appear in court again on June 11.

UConn Basketball Player Charged With Fleeing Police After Car Crash

UConn freshman basketball player James Bouknight faces several charges after police say he ran from an officer following a crash on campus.

Police say Bouknight was driving a car that struck a street sign while speeding on Sept. 27. Police say Bouknight told responding officers he didn’t have identification with him and later ran off.

Police say Bouknight has since provided them with a statement admitting his actions.

He has been charged with evading responsibility, interfering with a police officer, traveling too fast for conditions and operation of a motor vehicle without a license.

He’s scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 29.

The guard issued a statement to apologize and called his actions irresponsible.

UConn coach Dan Hurley says there will be consequences both “within the structure of the team as well as on the outside.”

Cleveland Browns player Gregory Robinson was arrested after US Border Patrol agents found 157 pounds of marijuana in a car, officials said.

Robinson, 27, and Jaquan Bray, 26, were charged in a federal complaint with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute marijuana and possession intent to distribute, the US Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas said in a news release. If convicted, they could face up to 20 years in federal prison.

Robinson is the same Gregory Robinson who is a player for the Cleveland Browns, Department of Justice spokesman Daryl Fields told CNN. Robinson will be an unrestricted free agent next month.

Bray and Robinson were approaching the Sierra Blanca Checkpoint Station when a border patrol canine unit alerted agents to their vehicle, the release said. Bray, who was driving, parked the vehicle in an inspection area.

“A subsequent inspection of the vehicle by agents revealed the presence of approximately 157 pounds of marijuana inside several large duffle bags in the rear cargo area,” the release said.

(NEW YORK) — NBA player Chandler Parsons was in a potentially career-ending car accident, reportedly involving a driver who was under the influence, according to the law firm Morgan & Morgan.Chandler, who is a small forward with the Atlanta Hawks, was reportedly driving home from practice around 2 p.m. on Jan. 15 when his vehicle was struck. Parsons, according to his attorneys, “suffered multiple severe and permanent injuries including a traumatic brain injury, disc herniation and a torn labrum.”Parsons’ attorneys, John Morgan and Nick Panagakis, said his injuries could potentially end his nine-year NBA career.”Chandler is having a difficult time accepting the consequence of the defendant’s reckless conduct on the roadway,” his lawyers said in a statement to ABC News.The alleged suspect was not identified by the firm, but it said the driver was arrested and charged with a DUI. The driver who allegedly hit Parsons was unconscious at the wheel when police arrived, according to USA Today, citing an incident report. A 7-Up bottle filled with alcohol was reportedly found in the driver’s seat, the outlet reported.The Hawks, in a statement on the day of the incident, said Parsons was involved in an accident after practice. The team said he was diagnosed with a concussion and whiplash and that he would enter the NBA’s concussion protocol. They announced Monday he was out of their next game with “concussion/whiplash/associated disc injury.”The team has not disclosed any further details about his injuries or the crash.”Chandler was in peak physical condition at the time of the wreck,” Parsons’ legal team said in a statement. “He is now working with a team of doctors to regain his health, and at this time, his ability to return to play is unclear. Our focus right now is on helping him make a full recovery, while we also work to hold any and all responsible parties fully accountable.”Parsons is on the last year of a four-year, $94 million contract. He was traded from the Memphis Grizzlies to the Hawks prior to the start of the 2019-2020 NBA season.The forward was selected by the Houston Rockets in the first round of the 2011 NBA Draft. Patriots' WR Julian Edelman Arrested For Vandalizing Car in Beverly Hills

New England Patriots star Julian Edelman was arrested in California Saturday evening on charges of vandalism after he allegedly jumped on the hood of a vehicle, causing damage to it, authorities said.

Edelman, 33, was arrested just around 9 p.m. in Beverly Hills after a bystander flagged down police who were working a separate robbery case in the area. The wide receiver was arrested and charged with misdemeanor vandalism, TMZ Sports reports. Edelman was later released by police and is scheduled to appear in court on April 13.

One law enforcement source told TMZ that it had been “apparent” Edelman had been drinking.

The Los Angeles District Attorney’s office will decide to file charges against the Patriots star.

Edelman was tagged in a photo posted to former Boston Celtics star and current ESPN NBA analyst Paul Pierce’s Instagram page Saturday night.

Neither the Patriots nor Edelman have commented on the arrest.

The three-time Super Bowl champion was named Most Valuable Player in Super Bowl LIII and was the team’s leading receiver in 2019 with 100 receptions for 1,117 yards and six touchdowns. He is scheduled to undergo two surgeries during the offseason after he played with a separated AC joint in his shoulder and had a “loose body” in his knee.
