MARGATE — A city man was charged with aggravated assault Wednesday after officials said he beat his father, former professional baseball player Bobby Woods, in the head, neck and hands with a golf club.

Robert T. Woods Jr., 45, also is charged with endangering and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

Police deferred comment to the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office, which did not respond to a request for comment.

Officers responded Tuesday to a home in the first block of Bayside Court, where both the father and the son live, for a report of an injured man, according to the affidavit. When they arrived, they found 70-year-old Robert Woods Sr. lying on his bed and bleeding from his head, neck and hands.

Woods Sr. was taken to the hospital to be treated for a fractured skull, bruising to the back, abrasions to the head and back and lacerations to the head, neck and hands, according to the document.

Officers spoke to the 911 caller, who said she found Woods Sr. lying on the bed and called police, according to the affidavit. Police found a blood-stained golf club in the hallway outside the bedroom, as well as a pair of bloody pants on the kitchen floor.

The 911 caller told police she told Woods Jr. a package would be arriving at the home that day, and he responded that he would be there, according to the affidavit. However, when she got there, Woods Jr. wasn’t and she found his father and the bloody pants, telling police they belonged to Woods Jr.

The neighborhood, made up of a mix of year-round and summer residents, was quiet Thursday morning. Neighbors said they heard sirens and saw police, fire and emergency medical vehicles but didn’t know the details of the incident.

Woods Sr. grew up in the city, played shortstop and third base for the Chicago Cubs organization before returning to the area in the mid-1970s for coaching and clinics. The father and son filmed an instructional DVD together, “Mom Can you Teach Me How to Hit?” filmed in New York’s Central Park. He also was a gym teacher in the Egg Harbor Township school district and ran a youth baseball camp.

Woods Jr. is in the Atlantic County jail. A detention hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday before Judge Donna M. Taylor in Atlantic County Superior Court.

An English Football League (EFL) Championship club has been charged by the Football Association (FA) in connection with allegations of sectarian abuse aimed at high-profile Irish Catholic midfielder James McClean.

The charge against Barnsley relates to chants heard during their Sky Bet Championship clash against Stoke City at Oakwell on 9th November, which the Potters won 4-2, in the run-up to Remembrance Sunday.

An FA statement said: ‘Barnsley FC has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E20.

‘It is alleged that the club failed to ensure its spectators, and all persons purporting to be its supporters or followers, conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and refrained from using abusive and/or insulting words which included a reference, whether express or implied, to nationality and/or religion and/or beliefs, while attending an EFL Championship fixture against Stoke City FC on Saturday 9th November 2019.

‘Barnsley FC has until Friday 10th January 2020 to respond.’

The news came just days after the FA launched an investigation into allegations of discriminatory chanting aimed at the 30-year-old Republic of Ireland international during the Potters’ 5-2 win at Huddersfield on New Year’s Day.

A tannoy announcement was made during the game at the John Smith’s Stadium to warn spectators about the use of inappropriate language.

Derry-born McClean has found himself in the firing line in recent seasons for his decision not to wear a poppy on his shirt in the game closest to Remembrance Sunday, out of respect for those who died in the city on Bloody Sunday in 1972.

A statement from the Professional Footballers Association on Thursday 2nd January read: ‘James has been subjected to this type of vile abuse throughout his career, and he will be fully supported in the same way as any other individual who receives abuse based on their race, religion or nationality.

‘It has become clear that this type of abuse is on the rise and is becoming a weekly occurrence for James. We will be talking with PGMO (Professional Game Match Officials) and the EFL to ensure that match officials are vigilant to this type of chanting and hope to see future action taken proactively on James’ behalf.’

Speaking on international duty in November last year about the regular abuse he receives, McClean revealed that he had been contacted by the FA before the trip to Barnsley and offered the association’s support.

He said: “To give them their fair dues, I got contacted by a member of the FA on Friday before the Barnsley game just offering support.

“I wasn’t expecting it, it was quite a shock, but in the same sense, credit where it’s due. He didn’t have to text me – he hasn’t for the last eight years – but credit where it’s due, he did to offer support, and they seem to be following up the chants from what happened on Saturday.

“Look, I’ve criticised them in the past, but I’m big enough as well to show and give credit where it’s due.”

Asked if he was tired of playing in England as a result of the hostility, the former Sunderland, Wigan and West Brom winger said: “No, not really. It doesn’t bother me. It probably affects my wife and my ma more, but that’s something I probably don’t take into consideration, how they feel.

“For me, I just get on with it. I think over the years, I’ve developed a kind of thick skin and it’s just water off a duck’s back for me when it happens.”

Los Angeles County prosecutors say former NBA player Ronald Glen Davis has been charged with attacking a man outside a club in West Hollywood.

The district attorney’s office said Thursday that Davis faces a felony assault charge.

The player, known by the nickname “Big Baby,” is accused of throwing the victim into a wall during an altercation outside a club on April 8.

Prosecutors say the victim suffered “great bodily injury.”

Davis was expected to appear in court Thursday. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney who could comment on his behalf.

Davis played for the Boston Celtics, the Orlando Magic and the Los Angeles Clippers.

If convicted, Davis could face up to seven years in prison.

The indefinite suspensions of four members of the Texas Tech football team were lifted on Tuesday, according to coach Kliff Kingsbury.

Quarterback Jett Duffey, linebacker Christian Taylor and wide receiver Quan Shorts returned to practice on Tuesday, and cornerback Desmon Smith returned to the team but didn’t practice due to an injury, according to a report from KCBD-11.

The four players, along with six other people, were arrested outside of a Lubbock night club while allegedly impeding traffic on March 25, which included damage to the windshield of a vehicle. According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Taylor was booked on criminal mischief charges for allegedly smashing the windshield. Duffey was charged with criminal mischief for allegedly damaging property at a nearby apartment complex after the incident. Shorts and Smith were booked for disorderly conduct.

“Obviously, meeting with LPD and going through all of those steps and talking with our administration. We came to our answer,” coach Kliff Kingsbury said, according to KCBD.

Smith started for the Red Raiders a year ago, notching 30 tackles, one interception, one tackle for loss and three pass breakups for a defense that had 14 interceptions on the season. Shorts had nine catches for 109 yards and two touchdowns for the high-octane, air raid offense. Taylor had five tackles in a reserve roll, and Duffey completed his only two passes of the 2017 campaign.

With the four players back on the roster, Kingsbury will have a better look at what his 2018 team will look like.

With five of their top six receivers gone, including leading receiver Keke Coutee, Shorts could factor into the wide receiver mix this year.

Duffey is battling junior McLane Carter for the top spot on the quarterback depth chart in place of Nic Shimonek. Unfortunately, Duffey is no stranger to off-the-field problems. The dual-threat quarterback was suspended last offseason after a Title IX hearing found that he twice had sexual relations with a woman who was too impaired to consent in 2016, according to the Star-Telegram. However a grand jury found there wasn’t enough evidence to criminally pursue the case.

Texas Tech opens the 2018 season on Sept. 1 vs. Ole Miss at NRG Stadium in Houston in the AdvoCare Texas Kickoff.

BARCELONA: La Liga side Villarreal said on Saturday they have suspended defender Ruben Semedo and taken him off their payroll, a day after the Portuguese player was charged with offences including attempted murder and held in custody without bail. “While always respecting the notion that everyone is innocent until proven guilty, the club has decided to suspend the player from duties without pay until the ongoing case has been settled,” Villarreal said in a statement on its website (www.villarrealcf.es). “Villarreal would like to show its horror at the grave crimes the player Ruben Semedo was charged with,” it said. The 23-year-old defender was arrested on Tuesday for alleged involvement with others in holding a man who they threatened with a gun, according to media reports.
