Former NBA player Stephen Jackson spoke at a rally Friday afternoon in Minneapolis in remembrance of his friend George Floyd, a handcuffed black man who died in police custody after pleading that he could not breathe.

“I’m here because they’re not gonna demean the character of George Floyd, my twin,” Jackson told supporters. “A lot of times, when police do things they know that’s wrong, the first thing they try to do is cover it up, and bring up their background — to make it seem like the bulls— that they did, was worthy. When was murder ever worthy? But if it’s a black man, it’s approved.

“You can’t tell me, when that man has his knee on my brother’s neck — taking his life away, with his hand in his pocket — that that smirk on his face didn’t say, ‘I’m protected.’ You can’t tell me that he didn’t feel that it was his duty to murder my brother, and that he knew he was gonna get away with it. You can’t tell me that wasn’t the look on his face.”

Jackson, a 14-year NBA veteran who became friends with Floyd while growing up in Texas, spoke along with actor Jamie Foxx and others at the rally, which was held at the Minneapolis City Hall Rotunda and also attended by Timberwolves players Karl-Anthony Towns and Josh Okogie.

Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who was seen on video kneeling on the neck of Floyd, was arrested Friday and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said.

The other three officers at the scene have also been fired.

Freeman did not have immediate details, but said a criminal complaint would be made available later. The charges come after three days of protests, which had been escalating in violence.

As protests continue in Minneapolis, outrage has been heard from across the United States following the death of the 46-year-old Floyd on Monday.

“We can’t love forever and the hate is coming out and I’m afraid,” Jackson said during the rally. “I’m honestly afraid because I know what comes from hate, from us, and I know why y’all are so scared. Because y’all are scared that we’re going to pull a you on you. I know why y’all are scared. Y’all have been doing us wrong for so long, y’all think karma’s going to hit you right back.

“But we’re going to do this s— right and it ain’t gonna stop. I don’t have no more tears honestly. I’ve cried enough. I’ve cried enough. I’m here for one reason. For my brother’s honor.”

Jackson has shared a number of social media posts defending him since his death. He appeared at the rally in a black hoodie with the words: “RIP GEORGE FLOYD 3rd Ward, TX.”

“He was murdered in broad daylight for the world to see,” Jackson said. “… So where do we go from here? We’re going to the front line and anything you see, so be it, so be it, so be it. I want you to see it because this is real pain. How can you tell people to stop doing what they’re doing when all you have to do is have common sense? Common sense ain’t common.

“Common sense is not common. I walk right here and smack this man right behind his camera and common sense will say we all saw him slap him. Am I right? Everybody in here will say we saw him slap him. Everybody saw it. So everybody didn’t see that this man killed my brother? Common sense ain’t common. It’s a new day.”

Jackson County sheriff’s officials said a recent shooting was gang-related, but it turned out to be fueled by a disagreement between two rival rap groups, an investigator said.

“From what we’ve been able to determine, they have no formal affiliation with any local or national street gang,” Jackson County Investigator Jason Pharez told the Sun Herald. “This is basically two competing rap groups, if you will. None of them claim gang affiliation and we can’t find any definite proof there was any underlying criminal activity.”

The April 18 shooting led to eight arrests — five of whom were former football standouts at St. Martin High School .

The Sun Herald reached to find out more about the case after reviewing court papers where the attorneys for the alleged offenders say they are not gang members.

Instead, the suspects are members or friends of two rival rap groups — one known as Fu Fam and the other called Ban Runna Gang, aka BRG.

The shooting happened, Pharez said, after the rappers got into an argument over lyrics in some of the music when they met up to try to hash it out.

The shooting started, the investigator said, after some of the members instigated an argument that escalated until shots were fired from different vehicles.

“All of these guys went to school together and most played football or basketball together,” Pharez said. “They had hung out with each other ….before this.”

The shooting happened near McClellan Road off Washington Avenue in St. Martin.

Two of the suspects, Jimon Dixon and Quincy Brown, were shot and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Those arrested and their charges are:

  • Dixon, 21, of Pascagoula, and a former football player at St. Martin High School, charged with armed carjacking, aggravated assault and shooting into a motor vehicle.
  • Tyler Polk, 22, of Biloxi, and a former St. Martin quarterback who now plays college football in Arkansas, charged with aggravated assault and shooting into motor vehicle.
  • Jayce Franklin, 20, of St. James Parish in Louisiana, and a former St. Martin football and basketball player, charged with aggravated assault and shooting into a motor vehicle.
  • Jo’Vawn ‘Ham’ McGee, 19, of Gulfport, and a former star running back at St. Martin, charged with aggravated assault and shooting into a motor vehicle.
  • Keni “Ham” Williams, 19, of Biloxi, and a former star running back at St. Martin, charged aggravated assault and shooting into a motor vehicle.
  • Quincy Brown, 20, of Pascagoula, charged with aggravated assault, armed carjacking and shooting at a motor vehicle.
  • Cedric Porter, 20, of Ocean Springs, charged with aggravated assault and shooting into a motor vehicle.
  • Jalin Stallworth, 20, of Moss Point, charged with aggravated assault and shooting at a motor vehicle. He was previously arrested on charge of aggravated assault in Moss Point.

Since the shooting and arrests that followed, members of the group, BRG, have created a new video that addresses their arrests.

A Victorian police officer is expected to be charged over leaking photos of former AFL player and coach Dean Laidley inside a police station. The photos of Laidley wearing a long blonde wig and a dress were taken when the North Melbourne premiership player was being questioned after his arrest outside a home in St Kilda on Saturday night. He is facing stalking and other charges. Photos of the 53-year-old in the station’s interview room as well as his mug shot were disseminated on social media on Sunday and appeared on the front pages of the Herald Sun and the West Australian newspapers on Monday. Laidley faced Melbourne Magistrates Court on Sunday and will remain in custody until May 11 after not applying for bail. Deputy police commissioner Shane Patton says the dissemination of the photos is appalling. Mr Patton said the senior constable allegedly responsible was suspended with pay on Monday. He is expected to be charged with accessing police information without authorisation. The maximum penalty for the criminal charge is two years in prison or $40,000 in fines. “It’s a breach of our values, it’s unlawful and criminal conduct and that’s the way we are treating it,” Mr Patton said. Mr Patton said six police officers were sent the photos by the senior constable via WhatsApp and they could also face charges if it’s found they disseminated them further. The police officer would also be subject to internal disciplinary measures and the corruption watchdog has been notified, he said. Laidley’s lawyers, as well as civil liberties groups, have criticised the officer’s actions. “Outraged that pictures of my client, taken by some police officer, on the sly, when in custody in interview have hit the media. Typical (hash)grossbreachofprivacy,” lawyer Dee Giannopoulos tweeted. Another of his lawyers, Bill Doogue, also tweeted his anger. “Disgraceful. Taking photos unlawfully and sharing them. And these were sneaky photos while in Police interview in Police Station by a Police Officer,” Mr Doogue said. The Victorian Council for Civil Liberties described the release of the photos as a “serious violation of Laidley’s human rights” with “transphobic overtones”. “It appears that these images were released with the intention of publicly ‘outing’ Laidley,” the group said in a statement. LGBTIQ Legal, a branch of the community group St Kilda Legal Service, said they were concerned the incident would lead to further distrust of police officers. “This incident requires an independent investigation as the first of many steps that are required for Victoria Police to do better for trans and gender non-conforming Victorians, many of whom have already experienced discrimination,” they said. Laidley played 151 AFL games from 1987-97 and was an inaugural player at West Coast before joining North in 1993. He played 99 games at Arden St, including their 1996 premiership before he succeeded Denis Pagan as North Melbourne coach in 2003. In 149 games, he led them to the finals three times before resigning during the 2009 season. He then had assistant coaching roles at three AFL clubs until 2015 and is currently coach of Melbourne suburban club Maribyrnong Park. Australian Associated Press

Video has emerged from Bashaud Breeland’s Tuesday arrest, and it shows near disaster being the result.

The Chiefs’ defensive back resisted being taken into handcuffs in South Carolina by a York Country Sheriff’s Office deputy and had a gun pointed at his face, before eventually being taken away, the video obtained by TMZ Sports showed.

Breeland is currently facing a four-game suspension for a separate substance violation from the NFL.

The officer threatened to use a Taser on Breeland as the NFL player refused to go quietly and after Breeland continued to struggled, he had a gun drawn on him.

“Let me see your hands! … I’m not playing!” the officer shouted.

Breeland was charged with resisting arrest, the transport of alcohol with a broken seal in a motor vehicle, an open container of beer or wine in a motor vehicle, possession of 28 grams or less of marijuana or 10 grams of hash, and driving without a license.

Later, he tweeted: “I really was at a gas pump got approach by two guys police pulled up they throw something my car as police pulled up which the cop saw. I was the one detained wit charges that really shouldn’t be charged.”

The tweet has since been deleted.

The Chiefs stayed mum on the incident until Friday, when coach Andy Reid answered questions as part of a digital press conference.

“I’ve talked to him,” Reid said. “Right now, we’ll let it play out with the law enforcement side of things and evaluate it from there.”

Breeland’s representation addressed the episode, as well.

“At the time of this encounter with law enforcement, Mr. Breeland was leaving a gas station store after making a lawful purchase,” his attorney said in a statement on Tuesday. “Moments after returning to his vehicle, a 2020 Range Rover with valid temporary paper tags, law enforcement officers approached Mr. Breeland and drew their weapons.

“We look forward to investigating why this level of force was necessary. Bashaud Breeland is innocent unless proven guilty. We look forward to the truth coming forward.”

Mr Moore resigned from the WA Police force in 2018, after being jailed for unrelated offences.

The state prosecutor alleged Mr Moore’s modus operandi was to meet women on dating sites, gain their trust, engage in a consensual sexual relationship, and then use a drink to drug them and conduct “depraved sexual acts” upon them without their consent.

The alleged acts – which Mr Moore recorded – included chaining the victims up, urinating on them, inserting objects into their bodies, and forcing sexual interactions with a dog.

“The women didn’t pass out, but they reached a stage where they couldn’t consent,” the state prosecutor said.

The state opposed bail due to concerns Mr Moore would reoffend or try to contact his alleged victims to encourage them not to give evidence.

His lawyer, Mark Andrews, said Mr Moore would be pleading not guilty to all charges against him, claiming the sexual acts, which while “depraved”, were consensual and done in the context of sadomasochistic relationships.

He noted any trial for Mr Moore to prove his innocence would be at least 18 months away, and that bail should be granted – with strict conditions that prohibit him from accessing the internet or contacting the complainants.

He said one of the new complainants attended Mr Moore’s 50th birthday after the alleged offences had taken place, another, he claimed, was evidently consenting to being filmed.

Mr Andrews said some of the new complainants also claimed to have remembered conversations with Mr Moore while drugged – including one who alleged he had sex with her in a car, telling her, “It will be ok, you’ll enjoy it”.

Another of the new complainants, Mr Andrews said, was a jilted ex-girlfriend.

The Magistrate reserved her decision on whether to grant Mr Moore bail to next week, with the 50-year-old to be held in custody until then.

At the time of his arrest in May, Acting Inspector Simone Van Der Sluys said she believed Mr Moore may have used his position as a police officer to pressure and intimidate the women in their 40s, which was why the alleged offending had not come to light sooner.

“I think they were embarrassed. I think there’s a lot of dynamics that exist here for victims of a sex crime and also to add to that, him being a police officer,” she said.

“I want to stress and assure any women out there who are grappling with that decision, any information they supply to police, it is their decision if they want to go to court.”

On Friday, WA Police spokeswoman Susan Usher said the investigation into Mr Moore was still ongoing, and they believed some victims were still yet to come forward.

“Women who have concerns they have been a victim of an assault but who do not wish to speak to police can seek support from the Sexual Assault Resource Centre (SARC) on 6458 1828,” she said.

Sex Assault Squad detectives are urging anyone with information to contact police via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a report online.

Callers may remain anonymous if they wish.

A former linebacker with the UC Berkeley football team was charged with two felonies Wednesday after he reportedly attacked a Berkeley police officer over the weekend, according to court papers.

The Alameda County district attorney’s office charged Joseph Adeyem Wisdom Ogunbanjo, 19, of Berkeley with trying to take a gun from that officer and resisting arrest, according to court documents.

UC Berkeley sophomore Ogunbanjo was suspended from the Cal football team during the fall season, and ultimately was removed from the team altogether, according to Cal officials. They said they could not say when Ogunbanjo was terminated from the team due to student privacy laws.

Police said the attack happened early Sunday on Gayley Road near University Drive on the UC Berkeley campus at about 1 a.m. According to court papers, the officer was sitting in his vehicle when Ogunbanjo walked up to him and “asked me if I had a gun, then asked me if he could drive my patrol vehicle.”

The officer asked him to leave, but instead Ogunbanjo opened the driver’s side door, according to court papers, and “it appeared as if he was going to forcefully pull me out.” The officer pulled out his gun and pointed it at Ogunbanjo as he got out of the vehicle.

“While I waited for cover, Ogunbanjo started to grab me,” then reached for the officer’s gun twice, according to court papers. The officer punched Ogunbanjo in the head two or three times to stop him from taking the gun. During the struggle, Ogunbanjo elbowed the officer in the face, according to police.

Then Ogunbanjo walked over to the vehicle and sat in the driver’s seat “as if he was going to steal” it, according to court papers. The officer hit Ogunbanjo on his arm with a baton two or three times to stop him from leaving, police wrote.

After the baton strikes, Ogunbanjo got out of the vehicle and complied with the officer’s orders to get on the ground, according to court papers. Another officer arrived to help take Ogunbanjo into custody. There was a struggle during the detention, the officer wrote, but police were ultimately able to arrest him.

Ogunbanjo remains in custody at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, according to court records online. His bail amount was not listed as of publication time. His next court date was not listed either.

RICHMOND — An 18-year-old was charged Wednesday with attempting to murder a Richmond police officer during a sideshow Sunday morning.

Court records identified the officer as Onome Ojo, a former UC Davis football star who was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in 2001 and had a brief NFL career in the early 2000s.

Onome Ojo, a former NFL wide receiver, was identified as the Richmondofficer injured during a sideshow Thursday.

Ojo is expected to recover after being struck by a car participating in the sideshow at Marina Bay Parkway and Regatta Boulevard. Two 18-year-olds were arrested and charged in connection with the crash, and are scheduled to be arraigned Thursday morning.

The alleged driver of the car that struck Ojo, Juan Vargas, 18, of Patterson, was charged with attempted murder and assault on a peace officer Wednesday. Genesis Diaz-Castaneda, 18, of Santa Nella, was charged with accessory after the fact.

Vargas and Diaz-Castaneda also face charges of conspiracy to file a false report. The charging documents allege that after the crash, they abandoned the car in Richmond, called South San Francisco police to report the car as being stolen, then travelled to the South San Francisco police department and “provided a fictitious account of events.”

Ojo is a former fifth round pick of the New Orleans Saints, and took an odd path to the NFL: He never played in high school, choosing to study dance instead, but decided to try out for UC Davis’ football team his junior year there. As a senior, he finished third on the team with 33 catches and second among Aggies receivers with 865 yards and 11 touchdowns, according to a 2008 Vallejo Times-Herald article.

Media reports say Ojo moved to Vallejo after a brief NFL career cut short by recurring knee injuries. He was a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when the team beat the Raiders in the Super Bowl in 2003, but he was injured and did not play. It is unknown when he decided to become an officer, but public records list him on the payroll at least as early as 2014.
