According to an affidavit from General Sessions Court, a search of Nance’s vehicle at the high school for possible stolen property led to discovery of a pill bottle containing a small amount of material that was presumed to be marijuana. The search was conducted by Crockett County assistant principal and athletic director Jerrod Shelton.

The search was conducted to look for a stolen gun, according to the affidavit. According to another affidavit, Nance confessed to taking a gun from Gayle Watson’s home without permission.

Crockett County Director of Schools Robert Mullins Jr. declined to comment, saying it is district policy not to comment publicly on students’ disciplinary matters. Shelton and Crockett County baseball coach Brent Fronabarger declined to comment as well.
