Racism and police brutality in the United States of America took the life of another African-American on Monday. George Floyd, a 46-year-old man, died after a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on Floyd’s neck, while he was handcuffed and lying facedown on the street. In this video, recorded by bystanders, one could hear Floyd repeatedly saying, “I can’t breathe,” but the police did not bother. Naturally, a lot of NBA Stars reacted to it.

The police officers had arrested Floyd because he had allegedly committed forgery. All officers on the scene were fired the next day but family members of the victim believe they should be charged for murder. Six years ago, Eric Garner, another African-American man, was killed by the police after being put into a chokehold. Garner too was saying “I can’t breathe,” before he suffocated to his death. His mother said Floyd’s death felt like “deja vu” and it forced her to relive her son’s death.

NBA players express anger and call for justice

Former NBA player Stephen Jackson was a close friend of Floyd. They have been friends since they met in the 90s and he called Floyd twin because they looked so similar. While speaking to the Today Show, Jackson revealed how he was devasted when he found out. “I haven’t been the same since I’ve seen it. It shut me down man, I screamed I scared my daughter and I was punching stuff,” Jackson said.

The most heartbreaking thing was when Jackson said how he found out about it. “My girlfriend’s mom sent me the video and I was thinking it’s just another black man getting murdered by the police,” Jackson said. He realized what happened later after receiving messages regarding the murder. Such incidents take place so often that one loses track of it.

Steph Curry wrote a long angry paragraph on Instagram which ended with “George was murdered. George wasn’t human to that cop that slowly and purposefully took his life away.”

Michael Porter Jr tweeted in support but faced backlash over it. He might have tweeted it in good faith but Twitter users were upset by the latter half of his tweet.

Reggie Miller, Isaiah Thomas, and Jaylen Brown are few other players who voiced out their opinion on Twitter.

Former Texas Rangers star and 2010 American League MVP Josh Hamilton was indicted on a felony charge for injury to a minor on Monday, reports Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Hamilton turned himself in to police and was arrested in October for hitting and scratching his daughter.

Jozelyn Escobedo of ABC 8 WFAA reports that Hamilton told his daughter to tell the judge “what a terrible dad I am” to ensure she would never have to visit his home again. Here is more from Escobedo:

When interviewed by Child Protective Services, his daughter told the interviewer that Hamilton started to assault and throw things at her after she made a comment that upset him, records show.

The former baseball player is accused of throwing a full water bottle that hit his daughter in the chest. Hamilton then pulled a chair from under his daughter and threw it at her, a warrant says.

Hamilton then allegedly took his daughter to a room, pinned her to a bed and repeatedly hit her on the back and legs, according to an arrest warrant.

Hamilton has three children and court records show he is accused of assaulting the oldest. His ex-wife, Katie, has filed for a temporary restraining order on her daughter’s behalf.

Hamilton, 38, hasn’t appeared in the majors since 2015. In addition to the Rangers, he played for the Cincinnati Reds and Los Angeles Angels over parts of a nine-season career. The No. 1 pick in 1999 draft, Hamilton’s career was delayed and at times overshadowed by substance abuse and addiction issues — including at least one reported relapse back in 2015.

During Hamilton’s career, he hit .290/.349/.516 (129 OPS+) with 200 home runs and 50 steals. He made five All-Star Games, won three Silver Sluggers, and was the 2010 Most Valuable Player.

BROWN COUNTY, Wis. (WBAY) – Updated to reflect Ahman Green was charged with disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property, replacing an initial charge of child abuse intentionally causing harm, and with a statement from Green.

Former Green Bay Packers player Ahman Green entered a plea in court Thursday and was found guilty of charges of disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property, both misdemeanors, stemming from a fight with his then-15-year-old daughter last year.

“I am happy that the truth has finally won out and my name has been cleared of the terrible crime of child abuse. I have never and would never abuse anyone, including my daughter whom I love, dearly,” Green wrote in a statement after the hearing.

Green entered an Alford plea, similar to a no-contest plea but maintaining his innocence while waiving his right to a trial which was scheduled to begin this week.

He said “parental discipline” was the reason for the altercation with his daughter, but Green said he wanted to spare his daughter and the rest of his family “the emotional trauma of a trial.”

Brown County Judge John Zakowski told him there’s a fine line between parental discipline and child abuse. But, the judge added, “It is significant that Mr. Green is accepting responsibility and not putting anyone through a trial.”

According to the criminal complaint, Green’s daughter told police she and her father were arguing because she wouldn’t do the dishes. She says he grabbed her, carried her into the kitchen, threw her against a cabinet and hit her.

Green admitted hitting her with an open palm, according to the criminal complaint.

Green told the court Thursday, “Just as much as I wanted to be a football player, I wanted to be a parent. And that’s all I’ve done for the time I’ve had both my daughters and my stepkids. I’ve been in their lives. That’s all I’ve been wanting to do.”

He was sentenced to 18 months on probation. He’s not allowed any unsupervised contact with his daughter, and he must write her a letter of apology. He’s also required to take parenting and anger management classes and undergo an evaluation.

Zakowski said Green’s status as a former Packers player did not play into the decision in this case.

“It’s always difficult. If you were a Packer, you’re a celebrity, and there’s always a concern — and I’m saying this because Attorney Lemkiul addressed it — people are wondering if you’re being treated differently.”

The judge went on, “I’m satisfied that that’s not happening here, that this is a, quite frankly, factually, it’s not like many other difficult situations where a parent, a loving parent, and involved parent, has difficulties with a teenager.”

Police have charged a man with second degree murder after finding a 39-year-old woman and her 15-year-old son dead in an Ajax home. Her 13-year-old daughter was also found in the home with life-threatening injuries, and died in hospital late Wednesday night.

“It’s an isolated incident — it’s not a random attack,” Const. George Tudos told reporters.

The 15-year-old has been identified as Roy Pejcinovski, a star goalie with the Don Mills Flyers minor midget hockey team.

Team president Peter MacInnis said Pejcinovski’s death is a “tremendous loss” for the Flyers, which are in the city finals to represent the Greater Toronto Area for the provincial championship.

“It’s tough for the players on the team, the parents, the staff — he was a great kid,” MacInnis told The Canadian Press. “And his buddies on the team are 14 or 15, how do you deal with that?”

Durham Region police were called to the area around 11 a.m. Wednesday after a woman went to a house on Hilling Dr., near Westney Rd. S. and Lake Driveway W., to check on her friend.

She was instead met at the door by a man who refused to let her inside, police said. After barring her from entering, he fled the area in a vehicle.

The man is believed to have been in a relationship with the deceased woman, police said, but he’s not the father of the children. He also didn’t live at the home with the family.

Police said there was a third child in the family who was not in the house at the time of the attack.

“She was located by police safe and sound at another location,” Tudos said.

Numerous comments expressing sadness have been posted to the 15-year-old’s Instagram in the hours following the news by friends and well-wishers.

MacInnis said the teen was a top player, who had promising prospects in next year’s Ontario Hockey League draft.

“He was an elite athlete, he was absolutely the team’s No. 1 goalie and he has been for several years,” he said, adding that grief counsellors were brought in at Wednesday night’s practice to break the news to Pejcinovski’s teammates.

Roy Pejcinovski, 15, was an avid hockey player, described by the president of the Don Mills Flyers as "the team's No. 1 goalie."

MacInnis said the Flyers were scheduled to play Friday, but the team has asked the league to postpone the game as players cope with the loss of their goalie.

“There are a whole lot of mixed emotions,” he said. “If it happened in the summer, it would still be a tragedy, but the fact that the team is in the high part of the season, it’s very difficult.”

The team plans to do something in Pejcinovski’s honour, MacInnis said, but details will be discussed later.

Police found the vehicle the suspect fled in abandoned in the Brock Rd. and Highway 401 area in Pickering a couple hours later. Later that evening, police arrested the man without incident at a residence in Oshawa.

Before the death of the 13-year-old girl was confirmed, the 29-year-old Ajax man — who has not been named by police — was set to be charged with two counts of second degree murder and one of attempted murder. He is appearing in court Thursday morning.

“He’s going to be held for a bail hearing and we’ll be releasing the name of that individual (Thursday) once that information’s sworn before the courts,” Tudos said.

The exact cause of death is still unknown, but post-mortems have been scheduled.

Tudos wouldn’t comment when asked about a report that one of the victims was found with a stab wound to the neck.

Former US Olympic volleyball player Kim Willoughby, 37 (pictured), will not stand trial after being charged with murder and child abuse in the March 2016 death of her three-year-old daughter, Kailia

A judge in Puerto Rico has said there is not enough evidence to charge a former US Olympic volleyball player in the 2016 death of her young daughter.

Authorities said on Friday that 2008 silver medalist Kim Willoughby, 37, had been accused of murder and child abuse

However, Judge María del Pilar Vázque declared on Friday that there was no cause for trial despite the charges.

A former US Olympic volleyball player has been charged by police in Puerto Rico in the 2016 death of her young daughter.

At the moment, it is unclear if prosecutor Esteban Miranda will appeal the decision.

In March 2016, Willoughby was allegedly searching for a towel around 9:45am when her three-year-old daughter, Kailia, slipped and hit her head, according to a police report.

CPR was performed, but the toddler was pronounced dead upon her arrival at the Medical Center of Mayagüez.

During the investigation, it was found that the blows she suffered were incompatible with the alleged fall.

‘The Forensic Science report showed that the cause of death was not compatible with a fall. On the contrary, the cause of death was a severe corporal blow,’ said Commander Janice Rodríguez, of the Criminal Investigation Body of Mayagüez.

Willoughby was a member of the US Olympic team that took home the silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics after losing to Brazil in the finals.

Afterwards, she moved to Italy to continue her professional career. She tested positive for nandrolone – a steroid – after a match for her Italian team, Perugia, in April 2009.

In September 2009, it was announced that Willoughby was given a two-year suspension from the Italian Olympic Committee, to end in July 2011, reported the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

Following that, Willoughby moved to Puerto Rico to play for various teams in the Puerto Rican league. She is currently a member of the Indias de Mayagüez.

This is not Willoughby’s first run-in with the law.

In June 2001, Honolulu police charged her with abuse of a family or household member and third-degree assault, both misdemeanors. One month later, Willoughby entered deferred guilty pleas to both charges.

A judge declared that there was a lack of evidence despite an investigation finding that the blows Kailia suffered were incompatible with the alleged fall (Pictured, Willoughby at the 2008 Beijing Olympics)

Five days after police charged Willoughby in the case, the victim filed for a temporary restraining order against her, leading a judge to issue a three-year protective order.

In September 2008, she was arrested for assaulting a woman outside a Honolulu night club in December 2006.

Willoughby allegedly got into an altercation with Sara Daniel at the Pipeline Cafe in Kakaako, causing severe bone fractures to Daniel’s face.

Willoughby claimed self-defense, but prosecutor Sherri Chun disagreed, saying: ‘This incident was not self-defense. [Willoughby] followed [Daniel] out of the club, and that’s when this all happened.’

The volleyball star pleaded no contest in a plea agreement with the state and was sentenced to five years’ probation. In January 2012, she was granted an early end to her probation.
