Dover High School junior varsity basketball coach charged with institutional sexual assault

A former William Penn basketball standout and Dover High School girl’s junior varsity basketball coach is facing charges after allegedly being involved in an inappropriate relationship with a minor.

Aignee Freeland, 23, is charged with institutional sexual assault and contact/communication with a minor.

Freeland was a star basketball player at William Penn High School until graduating in 2011.

She moved on to Edinboro University where she played until 2016, when Freeland signed to play professionally in Romania.

Freeland was Dover High School’s junior varsity coach this season, but was not on the bench during a game last week without explanation.

Head Coach Kevin Glover was also not in attendance.

According to the criminal complaint, Freeland had a relationship with a player and student at Dover High School.

On December 20, a York County CY&F caseworker and Northern York County Regional Police detective responded to the student’s residence and spoke with her mother about the relationship.

The victim’s mother told police that the victim had contact with Freeland via the phone, including text messages, Facetime and other forms of communication.

The victim’s mother consented to the victim’s phone being searched, and a forensic analysis was completed on the device.

The phone showed that contact had taken place between Freeland the victim, with video calls being made on December 18 & 19 at various times. In total, 18 video calls were made on the two dates.

The victim was interviewed at York County Children’s Advocacy Center on January 4. The victim said that she and Freeland started communicating via Snapchat and texting.

She also said that she met Freeland on multiple occasions after basketball practices, meeting at agreed upon locations in Dover Borough, Dover Township and Manchester Township.

During the meetings, the victim said they would get in Freeland’s car and talk, and Freeland would touch her “all over her body.”

This allegedly occurred on more than one occasion, and the two would talk about their encounters later via text.

The victim admitted to deleting the texts and conversations between herself in Freeland, with both being aware that Freeland could be in trouble if anyone found out about the relationship.

According to the criminal complaint, both the victim and Freeland agreed not to tell anyone.

Dover Area School District released this statement on the charges:

It has come to the attention of the Dover Area School District that a coach of the District has been arrested and charged with one count of Institutional Sexual Assault and one count of Unlawful Contact with a Minor – Sexual Offenses. It is unfortunate to have these types of situations occur in a school setting; however, the Board of Directors and the Administration of the district want to assure the parents, students, and public that they do not condone such actions by its employees. It should be noted that while this individual was a coach in the district, they were not a teacher in the district. The community should be aware that once these allegations were made known to the District Administration, the coach was removed from her assignment and suspended from participating in school activities. The Administration contacted the appropriate local and state authorities and have cooperated in the investigation of these allegations. Furthermore, counseling has been arranged for the students and due to privacy rights afforded the individual, the District nor its representatives cannot release any further details of the matter. The Board of Directors want to be very clear, the protection of students is paramount and they will take all appropriate actions to accomplish this objective.

The District asks that all future inquiries about this matter be directed to the Superintendent’s office.

Dover basketball coach arrested in sexual assault of female player, police say

Police arrested Dover Area High School’s junior varsity basketball coach Wednesday, charging her with institutional sexual assault, according to Northern York County Regional Police.

They allege Aignee Nicole Freeland, 23, of the first block of West Maple Street, York, had an inappropriate relationship with a 16-year-old female student and basketball player, according to a news release.

The charges come after an unexplained absence by Freeland on the sidelines during last week’s Dover-Spring Grove game.

At 9 a.m. Wednesday, police arrested Freeland at her home and took her before District Judge David Eschbach, who set her bail at $100,000. As of Wednesday afternoon, she remained in York County Prison.

Freeland faces one count of institutional sexual assault and one count of unlawful contact with a minor – sexual offenses.

Police allege contact between Freeland and the player occurred between Nov. 1 and Dec. 20 and took the form of conversations in person and on social media. The player said Freeland also touched her “all over her body” when the two would meet after basketball practice.

“Both were aware Freeland could get in trouble if anyone found out about the relationship, so they agreed not to tell anyone,” documents state.

Freeland is to have no contact with the victim and no contact with anyone under the age of 18.

District notifies police

Police began their investigation on Dec. 20, when they were notified by Dover Area School District officials of the allegations against Freeland. The district suspended her immediately, the release states.

The victim was interviewed on Jan. 4 at the York County Children’s Advocacy Center.

“During the interview the victim disclosed information of a physical relationship and sexual acts between the two,” the release states. “These instances occurred at various locations in Dover Borough, Dover Township, and Manchester Township.”

The teen told police she had deleted the texts and conversations between herself and Freeland, according to charging documents.

However, police conducted a forensic examination of the girl’s cellphone, which showed numerous contacts, including 18 video calls, between Freeland and the victim.

District responds

On Wednesday, the Dover Area School District released a statement about the arrest, assuring parents, students and the public that the district does “not condone such actions by its employees.”

The district said that once it became aware of the allegations, they removed her from her duties.

“The Board of Directors want to be very clear, the protection of students is paramount and they will take all appropriate actions to accomplish this objective,” according to the release.

Freeland was not present for Dover’s junior varsity game on Jan. 3. Chris Day served as acting JV coach. No explanation was given at the time for Freeland’s absence.

The accused is a 2012 William Penn Senior High School graduate, who played basketball at Edinboro University and professionally in Romania.

Dover HS assistant coach had sex with player, police say

Dover Area High School’s suspended girls’ assistant basketball coach is now criminally charged, accused of having a sexual relationship with a player on the team.

Aignee Nicole Freeland, 23, of the first block of West Maple Street, was arrested the morning of Wednesday, Jan. 10, according to Northern York County Regional Police.

She was arraigned on the third-degree felony charges of institutional sexual assault and unlawful contact with a minor by District Judge David Eshbach, who set bail at $100,000 and ordered Freeland to have no contact with the alleged victim, or with any minors.

She was then transported to the county’s central booking unit. It was unclear Wednesday morning whether Freeland would post bail or be committed to York County Prison.

Northern Regional Police said they were notified by Dover Area School District officials on Dec. 20 that they learned of an alleged inappropriate relationship between Freeland and the player.

The allegations: Charging documents allege Freeland had a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old girl who plays, or played, on the team.

After telling the girl’s mother about the alleged relationship on Dec. 20, she gave investigators permission to look at her daughter’s phone, and a forensic analysis was performed, documents state.

It showed 18 video calls — incoming, outgoing and missed — between Freeland and the girl on Dec. 18 and 19, according to charging documents.

The girl was interviewed Jan. 4 and said she and Freeland met on several occasions after basketball practice in Dover Borough, Dover Township and Manchester Township, documents state.

They would sit in a vehicle, talk, and engage in sexual contact, according to police.

“She said Freeland would touch her ‘all over her body,'” documents state, and that the alleged fondling included Freeland penetrating the girl’s genitalia with her fingers.

Kept quiet? “Both were aware Freeland could get in trouble if anyone found out about the relationship, so they agreed not to tell anyone,” charging documents state.

The relationship began Nov. 1 and continued until Dec. 20, the day police went to the girl’s mother.

Northern Regional Police Lt. David Lash said the investigation continues.

“We are attempting to determine if additional victims exist,” he said.

Freeland is being represented by RJ Fisher, a former York County prosecutor who’s now an attorney with Chris Ferro’s law firm.

“It’s obviously a complicated situation,” Fisher told The York Dispatch. “We’ll be reviewing the charges more closely and we look forward to addressing them in the near future.”

She was suspended Dec. 20, according to Dennis Kloster, who resigned his position as volunteer assistant coach on Dec. 23.

Kloster said he resigned because girls’ basketball head coach Kevin Glover was suspended from his position by the school district on Dec. 21.

Coaches, friends: The two men are friends who have coached together for many years, Kloster said, adding he doesn’t think it’s right that Glover was suspended.

Kloster told The York Dispatch that school officials directed the team coaches not to speak publicly about what was going on, or they would lose their jobs. He said he decided to quit so he could speak out on Glover’s behalf.

“He’s done absolutely nothing wrong,” Kloster said of Glover. “I felt if I quit, nobody could tell me I can’t talk.”

Dover Area School District Superintendent Tracy Krum did not return repeated messages seeking comment, and Dover Area Athletic Director Rich Leathery declined comment last week.

About Freeland: A graduate of William Penn Senior High School, Freeland had a standout basketball career at Edinboro University, after which she signed a contract to play professional women’s basketball.

That was in the summer of 2016, and she was slated to play in Romania until March 2017.

Freeland left Edinboro as a three-time All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division selection and was the PSAC West Freshman of the Year. The Fighting Scots won 20 or more games during all four years that Freeland played for the team, posting an 89-31 record over that time.

During the 2013-14 season, Freeland was part of a PSAC championship team and helped push the school to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight for the second time in program history.

In her senior year, Freeland was sixth in the conference in scoring at 16.3 points per game, ninth in rebounds with 7.9 per game and third with 55 blocks on the season. Freeland shot a team-best 51.1. percent from the floor and ranked fourth on the team with 45 assists.

Freeland cracked the 1,000-point career mark during her junior season and leaves sixth all-time in Edinboro scoring with 1,555 career points. She is also third all-time in career rebounds with 944 and has the fifth highest block total at 139.

About Glover: Glover became head coach of the Dover varsity girls’ basketball team in spring of 2016, the fourth head coach in as many seasons.

At the time, Leathery said the top quality they were looking for in a head coach was stability.

Glover, a 2001 York High graduate, brought about a dozen years of coaching experience to the job, having worked for New Hope Academy, William Penn Senior High School and Northeastern High School.
