DeAndre Baker is still in Florida, training every day in the hopes that he’ll soon be able to rejoin the Giants.

The Giants, though, have still not welcomed him back.

And it’s not clear when — or if — they will.

Though the 22-year-old cornerback is out on bail after being arrested in connection with an armed robbery last month, and is even free to travel to New Jersey, his status with the Giants remains unchanged, according to a source familiar with the team’s thinking. Baker was told to stay away from team meetings back on May 17 so he could “focus on his legal issues,” the source said, and he’s still not allowed to participate in any of their video meetings.

When and if that changes probably depends on what the prosecutors in Broward County, Fla. do next, according to Baker’s attorney, Patrick G. Patel. Baker was charged with four counts of armed robbery and four counts of aggravated assault stemming from an incident at a party in Miramar, Fla. on May 13. Patel previously told SNY the case against his client was “complete garbage” and that Baker was the victim of a “shakedown”.

In an interview with SNY on Wednesday, Patel reiterated his position and said he still expects the charges against Baker to be dropped – possibly by the end of this week.

“As soon this dismissal goes (through), he’s going to head back to Jersey and start practicing,” Patel told SNY. “If it becomes a charge, then the NFL will suspend him. So the Giants are really just playing it cool right now, which is the right thing to do. Just do nothing until the state makes a decision on what they’re going to do.”

Video: FNNY: Breaking down Baker, what to do with DeAndre?

Patel said the “general timeline” for prosecutors to make a decision is 30 days from when Baker turned himself in, which was on May 16. That gives them another 12 days to decide whether or not to proceed with the criminal case. Patel, though, said he expects the decision will come in the next few days. And he’s hopeful it will all be resolved before the NFL has to act.

“I think we’ve got the case won, to be honest with you. I think it’s only a matter of time,” Patel said. “But it’s the kid’s life. This kid will get suspended and lose his job, and then the case gets dismissed and what have we done? So everybody’s taking a wait and see approach.”

That does seem to be the approach the Giants are taking, keeping Baker away even though he’s free on $200,000 bail and a judge approved a motion that would allow him to return to New Jersey for work. The Giants, of course, are conducting their offseason virtually like every other team in the NFL, and it’s unlikely they will hold any in-person activities for players until training camp begins this summer. They are tentatively scheduled to open camp on July 29, though that obviously could be delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Patel believes that Baker’s case will be long over by then. He again told SNY that witnesses who identified Baker as the perpetrator of a crime have since recanted their statements to police. And he said he has evidence that Baker was logged in and playing the Madden NFL Football video game at the time the alleged crime and even the gambling that led to it took place.

Even if charges are dropped, the NFL could still punish Baker for violating the NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy – and they are investigating the incident that led to his arrest, according to a source. Regardless, Patel again said he believes Baker – who had attitude and work-ethic issues with the Giants last season – has been “scared straight” by this whole experience.

“Hopefully it’s a wake-up call for the young kid,” Patel said. “That’s what he needed. He wasn’t a first-round draft choice as a player last year, you know?”

A criminal charge tied to an October 2019 arrest for former Arkansas State University cornerback Nathan Page has been dismissed, according to Craighead County Circuit Court documents.

Court documents show that a circuit judge signed off on an order of dismissal for a charge against Page of criminal mischief on May 4, and it was electronically filed by the court Monday.

Page was arrested Oct. 30 in Jonesboro by ASU police and originally charged with third-degree domestic battery of a pregnant person. He was immediately suspended from the team, and he missed the rest of the season. ASU Coach Blake Anderson confirmed in February that Page was no longer with the Red Wolves.

Court documents show that Page’s charge was changed to misdemeanor criminal mischief on April 23. According to court documents, the alleged victim in the case, Naytia Watkins, later decided she wanted the case to be dismissed. She said that Page “never physically assaulted her, as previously noted in the police report,” according to court documents, during what was described as a “scuffle” over Page’s cell phone. Watkins sustained “an abrasion on her right cheek, a small laceration on the bottom of her chin, and several marks on her right thigh,” during the incident, according to the probable cause affidavit.

On April 29, a motion to dismiss the case was filed by deputy prosecuting attorney Tiarra Tanner, according to court documents.

“I am very pleased an investigation into the facts confirmed what I have said all along: what was alleged did not happen,” Page said in a statement through his father, Larry. “I’m very grateful to those who believed in me and stood by me through this. I will never be able to thank them enough. I am looking forward to considering options that might come my way and making the best decision for my future.”

Page’s father confirmed to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette on Thursday that his son is now in the transfer portal. Page, a Roland native and Joe T. Robinson High School graduate, will have two years of eligibility remaining if he finds a new school.

Prior to his arrest in October, Page was just days removed from what was one of the best games of his ASU career, when he had 2 interceptions, 2 tackles and 1 pass defended during ASU’s 38-14 victory over Texas State at Jonesboro. He was named the Sun Belt Conference’s defensive player of the week.

In two seasons at ASU, Page had 42 total tackles, 6 passes defended and 2 interceptions.

HARTSVILLE, SC (WBTW) – The charges have been dropped against a Coker College soccer player accused of raping a woman in a dorm room bathroom.

According to Hartsville Police Lt. Mark Blair, the 19-year-old man, whose name is being redacted from this story, was originally charged with criminal sexual conduct first degree and kidnapping. The man’s accuser, later identified as Lauren Emily Pearson, was arrested Thursday night for filing a false police report.

Pearson told officers Sunday morning that she was pulled into a dorm room bathroom by the alleged attacker, pushed to the bottom of a shower and raped.

Hartsville Police Lt. Mark Blair confirms Pearson faces a charge of filing false police report of a felony.

Hartsville City Manager Natalie Zeigler confirms the criminal sexual conduct and kidnapping charge against the man have been dropped.

The man’s lawyer, Paul v. Cannarella, released a statement Friday morning saying his law firm began conducting an independent investigation into the allegations on which his client was arrested. The man accused of rape told police and his lawyer that he and the woman did have “consensual sex in a dorm bathroom.”

The attorney claims his investigation revealed witnesses who said his client and Pearson were seen “making out” before leaving the dorm room.

“The police have confirmed through local media outlets that Ms. Pearson was, in fact, the complaining party to the rape allegations against my client,” Cannarella said in a press release.

Cannarella said his client’s family was forced to travel to Hartsville from out of state, incur expenses for bail bonds and legal representation.

“Regrettably, this same family was forced to clean out his dorm room after he was banned from campus, removed from the soccer team and suspended from school after his release from jail,” the lawyer states. “These false allegations should cause society to pause when they hear on the news or read on the internet that a person has been charged with a crime. Folks are quick to convict based simply on allegations, which oftentimes, just as here, are later proven to be false.”

FLORENCE — An argument over a female Monday evening left a local man hospitalized and a University of North Alabama football player arrested and dismissed from the team.

Khadedryck Todd, 23, 1301 Appleby Boulevard, Florence, has been charged with first-degree assault in connection with the case.

Todd is accused of assaulting a 21-year-old Florence man after a verbal altercation.

Police said the incident occurred just before 7 p.m. in the parking lot of a convenience store at the intersection of Pine Street and Chisholm Road.

Detective Sgt. Greg Cobb said when officers got to the business, they found the victim laying in the parking lot suffering from injuries to his head.

“According to witnesses, the victim and a man identified as Todd were inside the business and began to argue,” Cobb said.

He said after the argument, witnesses said the two men left the business and started fighting in the parking lot.

Police said witnesses reported Todd hit the victim in the head, knocking him to the ground.

“Apparently, the victim was knocked out, and laying there,” Cobb said.

Authorities said Todd walked away, got into his car, then got back out and walked back to where the victim was laying and started “kicking, stomping and hitting” him again, according to reports.

Police said Todd then went home to his apartment.

Police arrested him a short time later on a traffic stop on Pine Street.

Cobb said the victim was flown to Huntsville Hospital.

According officials with the UNA Athletic Department, Todd was a starting offensive lineman last year and projected to start this year.

Athletic Director Mark Linder said the university was made aware of the situation Tuesday by law enforcement. He said Todd has been “permanently removed from our football program.”

Todd, who is from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, signed with UNA in 2017 after playing two seasons at Jones (Mississippi) Community College.

He is in the Lauderdale County Detention Center on bond of $50,000.

First-degree assault is a Class B felony and is punishable by 2-20 years in prison, if convicted.

Former wide receiver Kevaughn Dingle was charged with felony sexual-battery, but the charges were dropped on Tuesday.

SPECIAL TO THE ORACLE

Former USF wide receiver Kevaughn Dingle announced via Twitter on Tuesday that all criminal charges against him have been dropped. He will continue his academic and football career at Iowa Central Community College.

Dingle, who was an 18-year-old freshman at the time, was arrested on Nov. 17 by University Police (UP) on a felony sexual-battery charge after an incident at USF’s Holly C residence hall. Based on information gathered by officers at the scene, UP “developed sufficient cause” to charge Dingle with sexual battery, according to a UP release.

Dingle was suspended, then released from USF football. USF athletics released no statement in regard to the incident.

“False accusations hurt the real victims of sex crimes,” Dingle wrote on Twitter. “The accused deserves to have an unbiased investigation and a real chance to defend himself. The State Attorney’s Office gave me both of those things, but USF did not.”

Rated as a three-star recruit by 247Sports, Rivals and Scout, Dingle was rated as the 14th best receiver recruit in Florida by Scout in 2016. In his senior season of high school, he won the Florida Class 6A State Championship at Carol City High School.

At USF, he never played a snap.

In his statement on Twitter, Dingle both gave thanks to those who supported him during his legal fight, as well as apologized to those who were impacted by the situation.

“I want to apologize to my parents for causing a financial hardship, but I commend the both of you for being strong and believing in me during this difficult process,” Dingle said. “I fault myself because I feel as if I let many people down by allowing myself to be put in a situation in which someone could accuse me of something that I didn’t do.

“I am humbled by all of your support and promise that I will not let you down. I respect women and have no respect for anyone who abuses them.”

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Charges have been dropped against a Lawrence man who was jailed for 1.5 years in a sex crimes case.

Fifty-one-year-old Tracy Releford was charged after an encounter in August 2016 encounter with a 16-year-old girl that moved between Lawrence and Kansas City, Missouri.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports a judge ruled in February that probable cause did not exist to charge Releford with two felonies. Prosecutors dropped a remaining misdemeanor charge but said the case could be refiled.

Trial assistant Jill Spurling says the state’s witness didn’t show up for the preliminary hearing.

The original charge of aggravated human trafficking was dismissed in March 2017.

Releford will be transferred to Missouri custody on another charge.

Releford is the father of a former University of Kansas basketball player Travis Releford.
