Nakeisha Shaneye Smith, 20, admitted to being on drugs when she hit a young mother with her car before driving off

A drama student accused of mowing down a young mother before ditching her car has admitted she was high on drugs at the time of the alleged hit and run.

Police allege Nakeisha Shaneye Smith, 20, hit Olivia McKay with her Honda on April 26 in Midland, Perth – leaving the mother-of-one with a broken leg.

Smith then allegedly dumped her blue 2005 Honda Accord, leading to a two-and-a-half-week police hunt for the driver.

She appeared in Midland Magistrate’s Court on Thursday where she admitted: ‘I was on drugs’.

Ms McKay was walking with a friend on a footpath about 6.30am when Smith’s Honda mounted the curb and struck her.

Smith, who attends the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, then allegedly drove off.

She was charged with grievous bodily harm with intent after police managed to track her down.

The April 26 incident left mother-of-one Olivia McKay so badly injured she needed to have her ankle pinned back together

The court heard Smith and Ms McKay were in the same friendship circle, but the pair aren’t close.

Ms Smith’s lawyer said her client planned to check in to a Carlisle drug rehabilitation facility once released from custody.

Magistrate Kevin Tavener said despite the charges being serious, he granted Smith bail after a police prosecutor agreed to it with strict conditions.

Smith plans to check in to a Carlisle drug rehabilitation facility once she is released from custody.

The young mother said she only remembered waking in excruciating pain.

‘I don’t remember anything other than waking up… I was screaming, I’ve never been in so much pain before in my life,’ she told The West Australian.

Smith will appear in court again on June 11.

Fallen AFL champion Ben Cousins will spend at least one more night in prison pending a bail application and has indicated he’ll fight nearly all new charges against him, including aggravated stalking in Perth.

The former West Coast Eagles captain was arrested on Wednesday after allegedly being found with about 2.5 grams of methamphetamine in East Victoria Park.

Police had earlier been searching for a vehicle that was seen driving erratically in nearby Kensington.

Ben Cousins will contest stalking and drugs charges in Perth. (9News)

Cousins, 41, was also charged with aggravated stalking and 13 counts of breaching a violence restraining order between April 2 and 15.

Those charges relate to his ex-partner Maylea Tinecheff, whom he allegedly tried to contact via phone more than 100 times.

Cousins faced Armadale Magistrates Court on Thursday but the matter will return to court on Friday to complete his bail application.

His lawyer Michael Tudori said the charges related to Ms Tinecheff were different to the ones Cousins previously spent almost one year in jail for, as there were no threats involved.

Mr Tudori said Cousins had been spending time with his children under a parenting plan, but less than one month before the alleged offending, she ceased all communication.

Cousins “turns to drugs” in the face of crisis, his lawyer said. (9News)

He said whenever Cousins faced a crisis he would turn to drugs for comfort, as it was the way he “deals with stresses in his life”.

No formal pleas were entered, however Mr Tudori told AAP that Cousins will fight all the new charges except the one for drug possession.

He later told AAP Cousins was very disappointed about being in custody.

The former premiership player and Brownlow medallist has been in and out of prison in recent years as he struggled with his meth addiction and family troubles.

He had been scheduled to face a trial last September over other alleged family violence offences, but after charges of stalking and threatening to harm Ms Tinecheff were dropped, he pleaded guilty to 12 lesser offences.

He was sentenced to eight months in prison but it was backdated and with time already served, he was able to walk free in August.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, the original bass player for the band Three Doors Down, 46-year-old Todd Harrell, was arrested June 15 on drug, firearms and domestic violence charges.

Deputies responded to his St. Martin home after an alarm went off. They say Harrell’s wife told deputies the couple was arguing when things became physical. When they saw guns and drugs, deputies called the narcotics unit who got a search warrant for the residence.

Harrell is charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a controlled substance and domestic violence/simple assault.

Harrell is also wanted in Tennessee on a probation violation.

He has been jailed with no bond, pending an initial court hearing.

The AFL world has reacted with shock to former AFL champion and premiership-winning coach Mark ‘Bomber’ Thompson being charged with drug trafficking and possession.

The 54-year-old was arrested and charged on Tuesday almost five months after police executed a warrant at his Port Melbourne home.

The Melbourne Magistrates’ Court heard that a range of drugs, including 134.6 grams of ecstasy, 33.1 grams of methyl amphetamine, an LSD tab, 5.6 grams of ephedrine and multiple Xanax tablets were found in a locked bedroom and loft study area inside the house.

Former Essendon champion Tim Watson, who played with Thompson at the Bombers and whose son Jobe was coached by Thompson at Essendon, said he was “in a state of disbelief” about the news.

“I can’t comprehend that the person that I played football with … could find himself in a situation that he’s found himself in now,” Watson said on SEN radio.

Watson said he had not spoken to Thompson much in recent years, but contacted him about a month ago to suggest they catch up for a coffee.

“There’s been a lot of us that have been concerned about him and I thought ‘OK, well it’s time to reach out and hopefully catch up’.

“I didn’t ever hear back from him but that is consistent with a lot of other people too.”

Watson said Thompson felt aggrieved about the Essendon supplements saga.

In 2013, the AFL charged Thompson along with Essendon senior coach James Hird, football manager Danny Corcoran and club doctor Bruce Reid with bringing the game into disrepute.

Thompson was fined $30,000 for his role in the affair.

“He was never able to put that behind him,” Watson said on Wednesday.

Jimmy Bartel, who played in the Geelong teams that Thompson coached to win the 2007 and 2009 AFL premierships, said he was saddened and upset by the news of the charges.

“He coached me for the first nine years of my career and completely shaped the way I played football,” Bartel said on Macquarie Sports Radio.

“The success I shared with him and the other coaches and players at Geelong is a massive part of my life.

“I’m sad and upset, and I feel sorry for his family because they’re the ones who have to go through it more than us,” he said.

Cameron Mooney, who was also a member of the premiership-winning Geelong sides, said Thompson had been a father figure to players.

“A lot of us got to the footy club at 18 or 20 years of age, and he was our father for ten years, helped us grow to men, taught us to play football, and we got the ultimate two premierships underneath him,” Mooney told Macquarie Sports Radio.

Thompson apologises to supporters

Outside his Port Melbourne home, Thompson was asked by reporters if he had a message to his supporters.

“Just tell them that I’m sorry that they’ve put up with this, put up with me,” he said.

“But hopefully we’ll get through it.”

He then rode away from the media pack on a bike.

Prosecution argues Thompson ‘a flight risk’

Thompson has been charged with two counts of trafficking ecstasy and trafficking methyl amphetamine.

He has also been charged with possessing amphetamine, ecstasy and LSD, and possessing prescription drugs without a prescription.

Three other people were charged in January following the police search of Thompson’s property.

Thompson appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday and was granted bail on a $20,000 surety.

He was asked to surrender his passport and cannot leave Australia.

He must also report to South Melbourne police station three times a week, and not consume any drugs of dependence or communicate with his alleged co-accused.

During the bail application hearing, police prosecutors argued against granting him bail.

Detective Senior Constable Naomi Bourke told the court Thompson was a flight risk because he had access to large amounts of money and a yacht.

Thompson’s lawyer, David Hallowes SC, argued that bail should be granted, emphasising Thompson’s family ties to Melbourne.

Mr Hallowes said the charges would be vigorously denied.

As he left the court, Thompson would not comment on the charges.

“It was a big day and hopefully we get our chance to fight them,” he said.

Before winning two flags as a coach at Geelong, Thompson played 202 games for the Bombers, captaining the club and winning three premierships.

He returned to Essendon as an assistant under James Hird during the club’s disastrous supplements program, which saw 34 players suspended by anti-doping authorities.

Thompson took over the senior role for one season in 2014 while Hird served an AFL-imposed ban for bringing the game into disrepute, and left the club at the end of that year.

He will return to court on May 25.

Australia utility back Karmichael Hunt will continue to be stood down from rugby after he appeared in court in Brisbane on Monday to face charges of drug possession.

He did not enter a plea and his lawyer requested a three-week adjournment after being provided with new information by the police, local media reported.

“With today’s decision by the Brisbane Magistrate’s Court to adjourn Karmichael Hunt’s case for three-weeks, Rugby Australia and the Queensland Rugby Union have confirmed Hunt’s voluntary stand-down will continue through to the next scheduled Court hearing on February 19,” Rugby Australia said in a statement.

Hunt, 31, was arrested with another man in Brisbane’s entertainment district on 30 December and charged with possession.

Rugby Australia and the Queensland Rugby Union, who hold Hunt’s Super Rugby contract, stood the dual international down from all rugby activities until the legal process was completed.

Hunt, who had successful stints in top-flight rugby league and Australian Rules football before crossing to rugby union, made his Wallabies debut at inside centre against Fiji in June.

He signed a two-year contract extension until 2019 last November.

Former ECU football player Anthony Domonique Lennon was killed outside a Raleigh restaurant last June because a drug courier he had hired to travel from the West Coast to North Carolina lost the drugs in a Chicago arrest, Raleigh police detectives said in 28 newly disclosed search warrants.

The warrants also show that police believe a man who they say helped finance the drug deal set up Lennon, 33, for the hit outside the Bahama Breeze on Wake Forest Road on the night of June 23.

Five people have been charged in Lennon’s killing, and police are looking for a sixth.

One of the search warrants asked permission to take a DNA sample from Wantavius Burney Jackson of Kinston so a laboratory could compare it with DNA found on shell casings found in the packing lot. Jackson was charged in October with conspiring to murder Lennon.

The only person charged with murder is Ashanti Bennett, who police said helped finance the drug deal along with another man known only by a nickname.

The theory laid out in search warrant applications by Detective J.L. Zellmer has Bennett and Lennon going into the Bahama Breeze parking lot together and standing by Lennon’s black Range Rover when “multiple suspects” came up to the pair and shot Lennon several times.

Sources who knew Lennon told police that he had hired a woman to carry the drugs from Seattle, Wash., to North Carolina.

Police did not disclose in the warrants what drug or drugs were involved in the deal or how the woman was traveling when she was stopped in Chicago.

Authorities in Chicago backed up the story about the arrest, Zellmer wrote.

The search warrants returned to the court clerk’s office Tuesday were for nine telephones accounts, eight cars, five social media accounts, a computer, a security camera and a residence in Charlotte, one in Raleigh and a tattoo parlor Bennet owns in Greenville.

Lennon was a defensive back for the ECU Pirates from 2011 to 2015.

He had moved to the Raleigh area from Suffolk, Va., where his family lives and where he was buried.

Lennon, known as Domo to his teammates, earned three letters while playing for the Pirates.

Wellington, Jan 9, 2018 (AFP) – – Two former New Zealand representatives are among four players suspended for doping offences, the country’s rugby authorities said Wednesday.

Zoe Berry played one Test for the Black Ferns against England in 2012, and Glen Robertson turned out for the New Zealand under-20 side in 2010 and 2011 and is a former member of the New Zealand Sevens squad.

Both were suspended for four years.

The two others, Ben Qauqau-Dodds and Rhys Pedersen, both played at senior club level.

Qauqau-Dodds is listed as the grandson of a former Fiji representative while Pedersen was voted the “best and fairest” club player in Manawatu province last year.

Qauqau-Dodds received a two-year ban and Pedersen was suspended for 21 months.

“What this investigation has revealed is that there is a lot of ignorance in our community game on the issue of performance-enhancing drugs,” New Zealand Rugby general manager Neil Sorensen said.

“What has happened to these four rugby players serves as a reminder that all athletes have to be very careful about what they put into their bodies.”

Berry, Pedersen, and Robertson were accused of possessing and in some cases the use or attempted use of Clenbuterol, a stimulant. Qauqau-Dodds was charged with possession and use or attempted use of anabolic steroid Metandienone.

They all pleaded guilty to at least one of the alleged offences.

The charges were laid by Drug Free Sport New Zealand, which enforces World Anti-Doping Agency codes, and follows an investigation into the website Clenbuterol NZ.

It identified a number of athletes from a range of sporting codes as making purchases from the website in 2014 and 2015.
