Wellington Phoenix defender Tim Payne has been fined A$700 after pleading guilty to a drink-driving offence in Australia.

The New Zealand international football player was sentenced at Manly Local Court on Monday, after he was stopped by police while joy-riding on a golf cart on a public road in the early hours of March 24 when he was supposed to be in Covid-19 quarantine.

According to NSW Police, Payne underwent a roadside breath test and was then taken to Mona Vale Police Station where he allegedly returned a 0.100 breath-alcohol reading.

He pleaded guilty to a mid-range drink-driving charge on June 10.

On Monday, Payne was ordered by the court to pay a A$700 ($747.7) fine.

Earlier this month, Payne was slapped with a four-game suspension from the FFA for breaching the National Code of Conduct, as was back-up Phoenix goalkeeper Oliver Sail, who was in the passenger seat of the golf cart at the time. Sail was not charged by the police.

The Phoenix have since returned to Australia, where they are currently in the midst of another 14-day stint in quarantine as they prepare for the resumption of the A-League season in mid-July.

The team’s next match is against leaders Sydney FC on July 17.

Their remaining six regular season games will be played in Australia.

Although they will be without Payne for their next four rounds, the 26-year-old’s loss has been offset by the return of first-choice right-back Louis Fenton from a long-term shoulder injury.

Prior to leaving Wellington, Fenton declared himself fully fit and said he was ready to win back his starting spot.

“I want to play every game and even if Tim was still available I think I’d be trying to push him and trying to get my spot back in the starting 11,” he said.

On Saturday, Washington Redskins wide receiver Cody Latimer was arrested for allegedly shooting a gun inside a Colorado apartment.

On Monday, details from the police report became public with police claiming Latimer threatened his best friend with a gun after a night of drinking at a poker game, according to a report from 9 News in Denver.

According to the report from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department, the evening began when Latimer called up Roderick English to set up a poker game at English’s apartment. English identified himself to police as Latimer’s best friend.

Police: Drinking, gambling before gunshots

English told police that he and Latimer both consumed alcohol once the game ensued alongside seven or eight other guests, including English’s girlfriend Madi Shal. The report states that Latimer got into an argument with another player, prompting English to call off the game and kick everyone out of this apartment.

Latimer returned to English’s apartment 30 minutes later with a gun and blamed English for the confrontation, according to the report. He told English that he had saved two bullets for him and Shal and threatened to “kill everybody,” the police report states.

Latimer then calmed down and emptied the clip and the chamber of his gun before becoming enraged again and firing two shots near English, according to the report. Police say that English then pinned Latimer against the wall before Latimer hit him in the head with his gun. The altercation de-escalated for good when English again pinned Latimer against the wall and urged him to calm down, according to the report.

Police arrived after reports of shots fired.

Lawyer references sex assault investigation

According to ESPN, Latimer’s attorney Harvey Steinberg told a Douglas County court on Monday that law enforcement officials contacted him about an investigation of a sexual assault of Latimer’s 4-year-old son allegedly committed by one of the players at the poker game.

No law enforcement officials have publicly verified Steinberg’s claim, and no other details are known.

Latimer faces 3 felonies

According to the police reports, Latimer is charged with felony assault in the second degree, felony menacing, felony illegal discharge of a firearm, misdemeanor prohibited use of weapons and misdemeanor reckless endangerment.

He was released on $25,000 bond and ordered to return for a July 24 court date.

Latimer played his first four seasons with the Denver Broncos after being drafted out of Indiana in the second round in 2014. Douglas County is just south of Denver.

Latimer played two seasons with the New York Giants before signing with Washington this offseason.

In six NFL seasons, Latimer has tallied 70 catches for 935 yards and six touchdowns while also working as a kick returner.

HOUSTON (AP) — Buffalo Bills defensive lineman Ed Oliver was arrested during a traffic stop in the Houston area and charged with drunken driving and illegally carrying a handgun, authorities said.

Montgomery County sheriff’s deputies pulled Oliver over Saturday after receiving reports around 9 p.m. of someone driving recklessly in a construction area north of the city while towing an ATV on a trailer, Lt. Jim Slack of the Montgomery County constables office said in a statement.

Oliver failed a sobriety test and the deputies found a small caliber pistol in his truck, Slack said. Texas law prohibits having a handgun while committing a crime, and Slack said Oliver faces a misdemeanor charge for having the weapon.

Video published by the Montgomery County Police Reporter appears to show officers examining Oliver’s eyes and having him walk in a line on the roadside before putting him in handcuffs.

Oliver is from Houston, where he also played his college career. He was selected by the Buffalo Bills in the first round of the 2019 draft. Montgomery County records did not list Oliver as being in the jail Sunday morning; the Houston Chronicle reported that he was released after posting bond.

The team said in a statement that “we are aware of the situation and we are gathering more information.”

Oliver’s agent did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A Guatemalan immigrant accused of killing an NFL player and an Uber driver in a drunk driving crash in Indiana has been charged with four felony counts related to the crash.

Manuel Orrego-Savala, 37, was arrested early Sunday morning after driving his pick-up truck while drunk and killing NFL linebacker Edwin Jackson and ride-sharing operator Jeffrey Monroe.

Orrego-Savala gave an alias at the scene – Alex Cabrera Gonsales – before attempting to flee on foot.

Orrego-Savala was deported from the U.S. in 2007 and 2009 and was currently living in the U.S. illegally. He is scheduled for an initial hearing in Marion County Circuit Court on Wednesday.

In Tuesday’s federal criminal complaint, he was charged with illegal re-entry of a previously deported alien.

The judge set his bond at $200,000 after entering a not guilty plea on his behalf, and charged him with four felonies. Orrego-Savala was charged with two counts of each felony: leaving the scene of an accident and causing death while driving intoxicated.

Appearing before a judge on Tuesday, Orrego-Savala said: “I don’t know why I’m here,” claiming that he wasn’t the one driving the car in the crash despite police saying he had a blood alcohol content level that was three times the legal limit.

Orrego-Savala had a 2005 conviction for driving under the influence in Redwood City, California.

“I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Indianapolis [Colts] linebacker Edwin Jackson,” Vice President Mike Pence tweeted Monday night. “This is a great loss for the entire Indiana community. My prayers are with his family in their time of grief.”

President Donald Trump tweeted about Jackson’s death, giving his prayers and best wishes to the Jackson family. Trump also called for Democrats to be tougher on illegal immigration.

“So disgraceful that a person illegally in our country killed [Colts] linebacker Edwin Jackson. This is just one of many such preventable tragedies. We must get the Dems to get tough on the Border, and with illegal immigration, FAST,” Trump tweeted.

Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry criticized President Trump and others for politicizing the fatal crash.

“We will vigorously prosecute this matter, just like any comparable crime, not because of the immigration status of an accused, but because two innocent men lost their lives in this horrible incident,” Curry said.

“We are disheartened that ghoulish and inappropriate public commentary has politicized this tragedy. Much of such commentary, including tweets by the President, fails to acknowledge that both Edwin Jackson and Jeffrey Monroe lost their lives on Sunday,” he said. “We will simply seek justice on behalf of the families of those two victims.”

Former NBA star Dennis Rodman was charged on Thursday with misdemeanor drunken driving stemming from a Jan. 13 traffic stop in Newport Beach.

Prosecutors allege his blood-alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit when he was pulled over at 11:11 p.m. near 4500 West Coast Highway.

His lawyer, Paul Meyer, said that after his arrest Rodman, 56, immediately went into a residential treatment program and committed to long-term outpatient treatment.

“He recognizes the problem and is working hard,” Meyer said in a statement. “No one questions his big heart and care for others. In recent months, he completed his community-service obligation (for a previous case) by donating many hours in long-term care facilities and making a real difference in people’s lives. I think the responsible way that Dennis is facing his current situation will be an inspiration to many others.”
