Speaking at the ManUp Pittsburgh event this past weekend, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger revealed his past struggles with addiction and how he was able to overcome them.

“It’s not always easy,” Roethlisberger told Tunch Ilkin, former Steelers player and current radio analyst. “People don’t realize all the time that us athletes, we’re human. We sin like everybody else. I am no different. We make mistakes. We get addicted to things. We sin. We’re human. I think sometimes we get put on this pedestal where we can’t make mistakes. I’ve fallen as short as anybody. I’ve been addicted to alcohol. I’ve been addicted to pornography, which makes me then not the best husband, not the best father, not the best Christian I can be.”

The 38-year-old signal caller added that by rededicating himself to his faith, he was able to overcome his vices.

“But you have to dedicate yourself and understand that you can get out of it because of the grace of God and him saying, ‘Listen, you’re good enough for me the way you are. You don’t have to be perfect.’”

Roethlisberger detailed how he found himself straying from God while in college at Miami University (Ohio), a pattern that he admitted to Ilkin continued during his early professional career. He was twice accused of sexual assault, and received a six game suspension in 2010 for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

Still, Roethlisberger explained that he was able to bring Christianity back into his life, providing him new purpose and making his faith stronger than ever. He renewed his baptism three years ago.

“One of the things I want to tell guys and tell people out there, I can be a really good athlete and a Christian,” he said.” It’s not one or the other. I can do both. I want it to be known to all of the young men out there, it’s cool to be Christian and be an athlete. Go ahead and be the best athlete you can be and see if you can be a better Christian. And that’s what I’m trying to do now. I’m trying to be a better Christian than I am athlete and football player. I push myself every day to do that, and it starts here. It’s not always easy.”

Roethlisberger also shared how his faith helped him overcome his season-ending elbow injury last year, and how he likely would have handled it differently just a few years ago.

“I’m so thankful that this injury happened during my walk that I’m in now,” he said. “I don’t know that I would’ve been able to handle it a few years ago, five, six, seven, 10 years ago. I know that my faith wouldn’t have been as strong. Now that I know what it’s about, it’s easy to say, ‘Hey, God, this is in your hands. I’m going to go train my butt off to get back out there, and whatever you have for me, I’m ready.’”

Entering his 17th season, the two-time Super Bowl champion is the Steelers franchise leader in touchdowns, passing yards, completions and wins. Roethlisberger has been selected to six Pro Bowls, and has led the league in passing yards twice over his career.

Organized by Urban Impact and Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, ManUp Pittsburgh is an annual event that “encourages and teaches men to be godly leaders for their families, and raises awareness of the devastating impact of fatherlessness among youth today.”

This year’s event was held virtually on Father’s Day. In addition to conversations with Roethlisberger and Tomlin, former Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle also spoke during the program.

An investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol is underway of a former Tech football player charged with a DUI and a fatal hit-and-run on Jan. 25 in Horry County, South Carolina.

Riley Patton, 23, was driving east on Highway 544 near Cabots Creek Drive around 1 a.m. when he ran into the center median and struck a parked truck on the median and the pedestrian outside the vehicle.

A Horry County coroner identified the pedestrian as Timothy Shulkcum, 55, and officials pronounced him dead at the scene.

Highway patrol officers stopped Patton as he fled the scene to Peachtree Grocery and placed him into custody and booked at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center of North Myrtle Beach.

A Horry County judge set the bond at $200,000. Patton posted bail and was released on Jan. 28.

Patton played for Tech as a long snapper for three years. He started 30-plus games in his career and snapped every ball in varsity play in his final two seasons, according to Tennessee Tech player information.

Patton is a student at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina, and was a member of the football team. Patton is no longer allowed to play.

Penn State men’s basketball senior forward Mike Watkins was charged with DUI after State College police pulled him over for speeding Friday morning.

The Nittany Lions’ leading rebounder, shot blocker and third leading scorer was suspended for a violation of team rules and did not play Saturday in the team’s loss to Northwestern.

Watkins was traveling at a high rate of speed about 1:45 a.m. Friday along East College Avenue and was stopped by State College police, a borough police officer wrote in an affidavit of probable cause filed Thursday.

Watkins’ breath smelled of alcohol and his eyes were bloodshot and watery, police wrote.

He initially denied consuming alcohol, but later said he had a Long Island iced tea about two hours before he was stopped, police wrote.

Watkins failed field sobriety tests and refused a blood test at Mount Nittany Medical Center. A preliminary breath test was positive for alcohol, police wrote.

Watkins was charged with one misdemeanor count of DUI and two traffic citations. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 15.

A defense lawyer for Watkins, who was charged in June 2018 with possession of a weed grinder and pleaded guilty in September 2018 to one summary count of disorderly conduct, was not listed on a court document.

“We are aware of the situation involving Mike Watkins,” Penn State athletics wrote Thursday in an emailed statement. “Everyone in our program must meet the standards and expectations we have established for Penn State athletics. As this is an ongoing legal matter, we will not have any further comment at this time.”

Watkins has long had support from coach Patrick Chambers, who said in a February interview with the Big Ten Network that he wants to “save a life” and ensure Watkins has the tools to handle any situation.

“Mike is day-to-day,” Chambers said. “Most days, he’s really good. And then there’s days where he’s not his best version of himself because of his condition.”

Watkins was forthcoming about his struggles with mental health and legal issues in the interview, which served as a follow up to a blog posted on his behalf in October 2018.

The 24-year-old documented the effects bipolar disorder and depression had on him as he grew up in southwest Philadelphia and transitioned to Happy Valley.

“To have that type of support, it was comforting. It was like, I knew I had to make a change, but nobody changes overnight,” Watkins said in the Big Ten Network interview. “I just had to keep chipping at it, keep working at it and then it gradually got better.”

The Nittany Lions were scheduled to play the Indiana Hoosiers in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament, but the tournament was canceled Thursday afternoon amid concerns about the coronavirus.

Penn State was also set to be a part of March Madness for the first time since 2011, but the NCAA Tournament — as well as all remaining winter and spring championships — were canceled Thursday, the NCAA announced.

“This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities,” the NCAA said in a statement.

PROVO — BYU football star Chaz Ah You was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and marijuana in Eagle Mountain, according to Utah County Sheriff’s Sgt. Spencer Cannon and Utah County Justice Court documents.

Ah You, a junior linebacker, was pulled over by a Utah County sheriff’s deputy at 4:46 p.m. on Sunday along Red Hawk Road near the Pony Express Parkway after he was observed speeding, weaving in and out of traffic, following other vehicles too closely and not signaling for lane changes, Cannon said.

BYU football spokesperson Brett Pyne said Wednesday afternoon that the school is “aware of the situation and looking into it.” Ah You is the second BYU football player to be arrested on suspicion of DUI in eight months. Last summer, BYU receiver Neil Pau’u pleaded guilty to an amended charge of impaired driving and ultimately missed the entire 2019 season.

Ah You reached speeds of 75 mph in areas where the posted speed limit was anywhere from 35 to 55 mph, a police booking affidavit states. The arresting officer said he performed an inventory search of the vehicle and found two containers of alcohol (one was empty) and a “THC vape pen” in the center console.

The officer stated that he opted to perform a field sobriety test at the Utah County Jail, “due to the weather.”

Cannon said Ah You was booked into the Utah County Jail shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday for a combination of alcohol and marijuana, having an open container in a vehicle, reckless driving, improper lane change and speeding.

Ah You was released on his own recognizance around 8 p.m. Sunday without having to post bail.

One of BYU’s top recruits from its 2017 signing class, Ah You played at Westlake and Timpview high schools. He is considered one of the top defenders on the team, and was to be a probable starter in 2020.

He served a brief mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints after his freshman season, returning home before the usual two years due to medical reasons.

Listed as the No. 1 football recruit in the state of Utah after the 2016 prep football season, Ah You played in 11 games for the Cougars this past season and made 24 tackles and one interception.

In addition to DUI, a class B misdemeanor, he is also charged with reckless driving, a class B misdemeanor, drinking in or about a vehicle, a class C misdemeanor, plus speeding and improper lane change, both infractions.

He pleaded not guilty to each of the charges on Tuesday, according to court records. The total recommended bail amount was set at $2,870.

ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) — Chandler Parsons’ attorneys say the Atlanta Hawks forward suffered “severe and permanent injuries” in a car wreck last week that could jeopardize his career.

Attorneys John Morgan and Nick Panagakis of the firm Morgan & Morgan say the injuries Parsons suffered in Wednesday’s crash include a traumatic brain injury, disk herniation and a torn labrum. Parsons was leaving practice when he was hit by a driver who the attorneys say was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

Sgt. John Chafee of the Atlanta Police Department told The Associated Press that the police report was not available Monday because the public affairs unit was closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday.

The Hawks said last week that Parsons suffered a concussion and whiplash. The team has added “associated disk injury” to his list of injuries.

Parsons remains in the concussion protocol and was not with the team for Monday’s game against Toronto. He was not on the bench for the team’s last two games against San Antonio and Detroit.

Parsons’ attorneys said in a statement released Monday that the other driver “admitted drinking, had alcohol in the car with him” and “passed out” following the crash. The attorneys say the driver, who was not identified, is responsible for “seriously injuring and potentially ending Mr. Parsons’ career as a professional athlete.”

The 31-year-old Parsons, acquired from Memphis last summer, has played just five games for the Hawks. He is averaging 2.8 points and is making more than $25 million in the final year of his contract.

MISSOULA — Jordan Gregory, a graduate assistant with the University of Montana’s men’s basketball team and former Grizzlies’ standout player, was arrested early Sunday morning by the Missoula Police Department for allegedly driving under the influence.

The 27-year-old was booked into Missoula County Jail on Sunday at 2:51 a.m. after being arrested and charged with aggravated DUI. He posted a bond of $1,085. Details of the arrest, including where it took place, were not available Monday.

“We are aware of the incident involving Jordan,” UM athletic director Kent Haslam told MTN Sports on Monday. “He is still a graduate assistant with the basketball program, but will not be with them this week when they play at Idaho State and Weber State. What happens beyond that is still to be decided.”

In the state of Montana

, an aggravated DUI differs from a DUI when at least one additional factor comes into play. Those factors are as follows:

  • Alcohol concentration is at least two times the legal limit of .08;
  • the person is under the order of a court or the department to equip any motor vehicle the person operates with an approved ignition interlock device;
  • the person’s driver’s license or privilege to drive is suspended, canceled, or revoked as a result of a prior violation;
  • the person refuses to provide a breath sample …; or
  • the person has one prior conviction or pending charge for a violation of vehicular homicide while under the influence, negligent vehicular assault, DUI …”

Gregory joined the Griz this fall as a grad assistant after a four-year pro basketball career overseas. Gregory was a standout player during his time with Montana and was a three-year starter who scored 1,234 career points and went to two NCAA Tournaments as a player with the Grizzlies.

Deltha O’Neal, a cornerback, played nine seasons in the NFL. Both he and a passenger were injured in the Aug. 7 wreck on Crestwood Boulevard.

ROYAL PALM BEACH – A two-time NFL All Pro player is charged with DUI after a fiery car crash this summer in Royal Palm Beach that seriously injured both himself and a passenger, according to documents.

Deltha Lee O’Neal, of Royal Palm Beach, is charged with one count of DUI with serious injury and one of DUI with property damage. The first count is “enhanced” because of his high blood-alcohol level. A report said blood-alcohol tests placed his level at 0.162 and 0.163, double the legal threshold for impairment.

The passenger also has sued the 42-year-old, who played cornerback for the Denver Broncos, Cincinnati Bengals and New England Patriots over nine NFL seasons.

>>MORE Toss sex-for-vote charge against Lantana mayor, administrative judge says

Miami-Dade police said they arrested O’Neal late on Dec. 4, at a home about five miles northeast of Miami International Airport, on the out-of-county warrant. The agency did not provide details.

O’Neal appeared before a Miami-Dade judge the morning of Dec, 5 and left jail on $3,000 bond, jail officials said.

O’Neal is set for arraignment in Palm Beach County on Jan. 9.

Calls made Wednesday to a telephone number listed for O’Neal in reports, as well as to lawyers identified as his attorneys in the criminal and civil cases, respectively, were not returned.

According to a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office report and a PBSO search warrant request, at about 8:30 p.m. Aug. 7, O’Neal was driving his black Mercedes-Benz north “at a high rate of speed” on the 7500 block of Crestwood Boulevard, near Madison Green Country Club.

For what authorities called “an unknown reason,” O’Neal lost control of the car on a curve. It struck a curb, spun and hit a utility pole and several trees, tearing off the vehicle’s rear end. The Mercedes-Benz then caught fire.

His passenger, Joseph Babcock of Royal Palm Beach, later would tell a PBSO investigator that O’Neal suddenly had accelerated on Crestwood and was going as fast as 100 mph. He said he’d told O’Neal to “slow the (expletive) down.”

Paramedics pulled out O’Neal and Babcock, and flew them to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach.

O’Neal sustained a broken ankle, a fractured back and neck, an eye injury, brain bleeding and intestinal injuries. Babcock, who had been in the front seat, had a broken femur and injuries to his spleen, hand and mouth.

At the hospital, a PBSO investigator said, O’Neal “was very agitated and was becoming combative with the hospital staff,” which sedated him and inserted a tube to help him breathe. A nurse said O’Neal “could barely speak and did not know where he was” and “was barely able to say his own first name.”

O’Neal told the investigator he’d been going home from the Bru’s Room sports bar in Royal Palm Beach after drinking beer; he did not say how much.

Babcock said he drank two or three beers and O’Neal drank beers, but other patrons then bought O’Neal at least three shots of “Jack Fire,” a whiskey and cinnamon liqueur blend.

Babcock sued O’Neal on Sept. 17. Babcock’s attorney, Michael J. McMullen declined Wednesday to comment on the active case.

O’Neal also told the investigators he previously had suffered concussions. While he didn’t say if they came during his playing career, the NFL has in recent years conducted a review of the long-term consequences of concussions on its players.

It’s not known how long O’Neal has lived in Palm Beach County. He bought his Royal Palm Beach house in 2002 but still owned a home near Atlanta as recently as 2015.

Logan Woodside’s brief time in Cincinnati is already off to a rocky start.

According to police records, the Bengals rookie quarterback was charged with DUI after being pulled over in Bellevue, Kentucky, on June 9. According to a police report obtained by the Cincinnati Enquirer, Woodside was pulled over around 3:45 a.m. when an officer witnessed the quarterback’s blue SUV speed through a parking lot.

After struggling through several sobriety tests, the officer had Woodside take a breathalyzer. The rookie ended up blowing a .112, which is well above Kentucky’s legal driving limit of .08. Woodside was also given a ticket for driving more than 10 mph over the speed limit.

More on the NFL

According to Fox 19, Woodside pleaded not guilty to both charges on Tuesday and has been given a second court date of July 10.

In a statement, the Bengals acknowledged that they’re aware of the situation.

“We are aware of the incident involving Logan Woodside and are gathering more information,” the team said.

Despite the arrest, Woodside was still allowed to participate in the team’s mandatory minicamp, which kicked off on Tuesday and runs through Thursday. If the Bengals hold on to him, Woodside will be in a stiff competition with Matt Barkley and Jeff Driskel for the team’s backup quarterback job.

The Bengals are looking to replace AJ McCarron, who signed with Buffalo earlier this year. All three potential backup quarterbacks have their downsides: Barkley was signed in March and isn’t very familiar with the Bengals offense.

As for Driskel, he’s coming off of multiple injuries, including a fractured hand suffered during the 2017 preseason and a broken arm suffered toward the end of the 2017 regular season. On Woodside’s end, the DUI charge probably isn’t going to win him any favors in the Bengals front office.

Woodside was one of the final picks made by any team in the 2018 NFL Draft. The Bengals selected the former Toledo quarterback in the seventh round with the 249th overall pick (there’s only 256 picks in the draft). Woodside was named the MAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2017 after throwing for 3,882 yards and 28 touchdowns.

Former MLB player Albert Belle was reportedly arrested on indecent exposure, DUI, and extreme DUI charges in Arizona over the weekend. He was booked into the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office jail on Sunday.

While the circumstances surrounding Belle’s arrest are still unclear at this time, Fox 10 Phoenix reporter Matt Rodewald is reporting the ex-Indians slugger was arrested during a spring training game in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was charged with two counts of indecent exposure, one count of DUI, and one count of extreme DUI. A mugshot of Belle, who is now 51, was released early Monday morning, and he looks unrecognizable to many of those who remember him playing for the Indians, White Sox, and Orioles over the course of his 12-year MLB career.

Belle’s last MLB game came back in 2000. He hit 381 home runs during his career and made five All-Star teams. He also led the American League in home runs in 1995 and led the American League in RBIs on three separate occasions (1993, 1995, 1996).

But Belle’s career was littered with controversy. He was suspended for using a corked bat in 1994. He was fined for knocking over Brewers infielder Fernando Viña during a game in 1996. He also maintained a contentious relationship with members of the media, often refusing to speak with reporters after games. And his struggles with alcohol have been well documented. He received treatment for alcohol abuse in 1990.

After retiring from MLB, Belle was arrested in 2006 for stalking his ex-girlfriend. He pleaded guilty to stalking and was sentenced to five months in jail and five years probation.
