Change is coming to one of the Confederate statues in the LOU Community, but members of the Ole Miss football team are asking for more.

In a video posted on Twitter this past weekend, Ole Miss players called for the Confederate statue in front of the Lafayette County Courthouse be removed.

The two-minute video features MoMo Sanogo, Ryder Anderson and Jerrion Ealy, among other players, asking the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors to move the statue from its current location.

This comes after the Institutions of Higher Learning approved the University of Mississippi’s relocation plan of the statue located on the Lyceum Circle last Thursday. Players praised the IHL’s vote in the video.

“It’s that we remove that statue from the Square and continue to work towards that,” Anderson said.

The video ended with every player saying “Together. We Can.”

On Monday, the Board of Supervisors held a special meeting allowing for residents of Oxford and Lafayette County to discuss their stance of either removing the statue or keeping it where it currently stands. No action was taken but the Supervisors could bring it up for a vote at their July 6 Board meeting or at a future meeting. Only Lafayette County has the power to remove the statue as it resides on County property.

The players also spoke out about police brutality with the video starting with Anderson giving his condolences to George Floyd, Breanna Taylor, Dominique Clayton and “countless others who had their lives taken,” Anderson said.

Clayton was found murdered in her bed last May, resulting in the arrest of former Oxford Police officer Matthew Kinne, who was charged with capitol murder. Kinne’s trial was set to start in April but the COVID-19 pandemic postponed Lafayette County’s April court session.

Sanogo and other players are taking part in L-O-U-NITED’s A March for Progess: Together We Can event on Saturday. The march will begin at 3 p.m. at City Hall where t-shirts will be sold with proceeds donated to The Family of Dominique Clayton Fund and The Boy’s and Girl’s Club of North Mississippi.

A former Philadelphia Eagle is one of 10 ex-NFL players
charged with enriching themselves by filing false claims through a program
meant to help retired players and their families pay for medical expenses.

Former Eagles running back Correll Buckhalter is charged
with receiving bribes and kickbacks for submitting false claims for expensive medical
equipment on behalf of others, and recruiting fellow NFL players to join in the
scheme, according to a federal grand jury indictment unsealed Thursday.

Some of the fake claims were for equipment such as “hyperbaric
oxygen chambers, ultrasound machines designed for use by a doctor’s office to
conduct women’s health examinations, and electromagnetic therapy devices
designed for use on horses,” the indictment claims.

Buckhalter played for the Eagles between 2001 and 2008. He and his co-conspirators received anywhere from “a few thousand dollars to $10,000 or more” per fake claim, according to federal prosecutors.

The alleged scheme involved the defendants misusing the Gene Upshaw NFL Player Health Reimbursement Account Plan between roughly July 2017 and December of last year. The plan, funded by teams within the league, allows players to earn thousands of tax-exempt dollars for themselves, spouses or dependents per each season played beyond three seasons.

The cash is supposed to be used to cover legitimate medical expenses, with players and their families being reimbursed through the plan, but the defendants’ claims were allegedly fake.

Buckhalter was able to submit players’ fake claims by getting them to give him personal information, including their social security numbers, according to court documents. He allegedly went so far as to impersonate players by calling the phone number on the reimbursement form to check on the status of the claims.

To make the reimbursement forms seem real, Buckhalter and his co-defendants are alleged to have submitted fake letters – purportedly written by health care providers – describing players’ or their families’ use of the equipment, as well as submitting fake prescriptions and fake invoices for proof of purchase of the equipment.

The scheme caused the Gene Upshaw NFL Player Health Reimbursement Account Plan to pay out more than $3.4 million in fake claims, according to federal prosecutors.

Buckhalter is charged with conspiring to commit wire and health care fraud. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison.

He will make his initial appearance in federal court in
Kentucky on Jan. 2, a Justice Department spokesman said. It is not yet known if
Buckhalter has obtained an attorney.

A local adult league hockey player is suing a former opponent, league brass and even the City of Kelowna in relation to injuries he sustained while on the ice in 2018.

Ryan Bachmeier, a Kelowna physiotherapist, filed a notice of civil claim in Kelowna court on April 22, alleging Greg Hopf injured him while playing in a ‘careless, reckless and negligent manner’, during a ‘no contact’ Pacific Adult Hockey League game on October 16, 2018.

“During the game, the plaintiff was in the defensive corner without the puck when the defendant Hopf violently and negligently charged at the plaintiff and attacked the plaintiff from behind, pulling him backwards with the defendant Hopf landing on top of him, while repeatedly striking him in the face as he was still laying on the ice, causing injuries, loss and damage,” claimed Bachmeier in the suit.

Bachmeier claimed he suffered a dislocated and fractured right ankle, as well as torn ligaments among other injuries. The suit contests this suffering has followed him since the incident, causing pain, discomfort, loss of enjoyment of life, permanent physical disability and loss of earnings, both past and prospective.

According to the suit, the league itself is also at fault, naming league co-ordinator Larry Lenarduzzi. He is accused of letting Hopf continue to play even though he ‘knew or ought to have known that he played hockey in a careless, reckless and negligent manner’.

The suit also mentioned Hopf’s penalty minutes, stating Lenarduzzi failed to assess the penalties from season to season. Bachmeier claimed this as evidence of both the league’s negligence and Hopf’s propensity to play hockey in a violent manner.

The City of Kelowna is accused of failing to manage the Pacific Adult Hockey League when it knew or ought to have known rules and the code of conduct was not being enforced.

Bachmeier is seeking damages related to his health care costs and loss of income, as well as punitive and aggravated damages.

None of the claims have been proven in court and none of the defendants have responded to the notice of claim. Parties have 21 days to submit a response.
