A former standout. East St. Louis athlete has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of a Belleville woman on April 20.

Kraig T. Appleton is being held on $1 million bond at the St. Clair County Jail on charges he killed Kellie Ferrell, 41.

East St. Louis Police were assisted in the investigation of the shooting by Illinois State Police investigators after being called to the 2900 block of Converse Avenue at about 10:34 p.m.

Ferrell was taken to Touchette Regional Hospital, where she later died from a gunshot wound to the abdomen, according to a release from state police Saturday.

Police are not discussing the motive or the events leading up to the shooting.

Appleton was a standout wide receiver at East St. Louis in 2009, when the Flyers won a state championship. HIs senior year, he earned all-state honors in both track and football. He also was on the school’s academic honor roll.

His 10 touchdowns and team-best 23.5 yards per catch earned him a football scholarship to the University of Wisconsin., where, as a true freshman, he made three receptions. He was suspended for an unspecified violation of team rules and disappeared from the Badgers’ roster.

In 2011, he was hospitalized after being shot multiple times in East St. Louis.

Willie Jones, an East St. Louis musician, said he kept in touch off and on with Ferrell since they attended Alta Sita Elementary School in East St. Louis together. He said he was “heartbroken” by the news of her death and remembered Ferrell as a “likeable, outgoing” person.

“She had standards at an early age,” he said. “We last waved at each other on Facebook on March 12 of last year. We both didn’t keep in touch all the way. In a Facebook post, she congratulated me on my music success. I told her to ‘let’s keep in touch.’

“When I got this devastating news, I was overwhelmed. Man, she was a nice person.”

MAPLE HEIGHTS, Ohio — A 39-year-old Maple Heights middle school basketball coach is accused of punching a 14-year-old East Cleveland basketball player during a break in the game Jan. 16.

Robert Clark, who is a fourth and fifth grade teacher at Barack Obama Elementary School, is charged with assault and was placed on paid administrative leave in the incident that happened about 6:30 p.m. at Heritage Middle School in East Cleveland, according to court records and Maple Heights City Schools Superintendent Dr. Charles T. Keenan.

The school is currently conducting its own investigation into the incident, but Clark will remain on leave until the case is resolved through the courts, Keenan said.

Clark punched an East Cleveland basketball player in the face while he encouraged his team to fight the opposing team, police and Keenan said.

Court records say Clark was scheduled to appear in East Cleveland Municipal Court Thursday afternoon, but officials did not return a call seeking comment.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Suspended North Carolina State guard Markell Johnson is facing a felony assault charge in Cleveland.

According to a court document, Johnson was among four people indicted Dec. 5 in Cuyahoga County. The document states they “did knowingly cause serious physical harm” to a male victim on or about Oct. 8.

Court records show Johnson has pleaded not guilty and posted $5,000 bond on Dec. 20. The case was continued Thursday until the next pretrial hearing scheduled for Jan. 8, according to online court records.

Wolfpack coach Kevin Keatts declined to comment on Johnson’s case Thursday afternoon.

Athletic spokesman Fred Demarest said the school learned of the indictment Dec. 14 and indefinitely suspended Johnson that day. N.C. State announced the suspension two days later.

At the time, team spokesman Craig Hammel cited a violation of the school’s student-athlete code of conduct but provided no further details.

According to the school’s code of conduct, a student-athlete charged with a felony is indefinitely suspended from athletics participation, pending the resolution of charges. Johnson played in the Dec. 9 win against UMKC after the indictment, though Keatts said the program “acted appropriately as soon as we found out about it.”

“At this time, there’s nothing more that I can say than we’ve already said about it,” Keatts said.

Johnson had started all 10 games he played, averaging 8.7 points and 6.6 assists while shooting 46 percent.

John Paris, Johnson’s attorney, did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press on Thursday.

Johnson starred at East Tech High School and was cleveland.com boy’s basketball player of the year in 2016. His team won three straight Senate League championships and made a Division I state semifinal appearance.

After three years at East Tech, Johnson reclassified to graduate in the class of 2016.
