East Carolina senior starting offensive lineman Cortez Herrin was arrested late Saturday night with two marijuana charges, Pitt County Court records show.

Herrin, 22, was charged with possession with intent to sell or distribute (felony) and possession of marijuana paraphernalia (misdemeanor). He was booked on a $5,000 secured bond.

The Saluda, S.C., native has been suspended indefinitely as a result of the charges.

“We are aware of the matter concerning Cortez Herrin,” ECU coach Mike Houston said in a statement. “He has been suspended indefinitely from all football activities as we continue to gather information.”

Along with Herrin, ECU redshirt sophomore defensive end Dorian Hardy was also recently booked for failing to appear as a result of three misdemeanor driving charges: speeding, reckless driving, and no operator’s license. Hardy has also been suspended indefinitely from the program.

Hardy has appeared in two career games with one tackle. He suffered a season-ending knee injury last preseason and missed all of his redshirt freshman campaign. Hardy was previously arrested in 2018 along with running back Tay Williams for resisting a public officer.

The 6-foot-3, 325-pound Herrin has started for the Pirates the last three years along the offensive line at left guard when healthy. He missed significant time this past season with a knee injury, but still managed to participate in six games, including five starts.

Herrin was granted a medical hardship for his freshman season when he only appeared in one game during the 2016 campaign, allowing him an extra year of eligibility. He is entering his redshirt senior season with the Pirates as a result.

Marijuana is legal for adults in 11 states: Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Alaska, Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, Maine, Vermont and Massachusetts. Medicinal marijuana is also legal in 19 more states. Marijuana isn’t legal for recreational or medicinal use in North Carolina.

Herrin has been a key member of the Pirates’ offensive line the past few seasons. The South Carolina native has played in 27 career games with 22 starts under his belt. He started 16 games in a row the last two seasons at left guard before being sidelined prior to the Old Dominion game with a knee injury.

Counting Herrin’s return, the Pirates will bring back the majority of their offensive line from this season. Senior starting center Branden Pena has graduated and moved on, but the Pirates are expected to apply for an extra year for senior Fernando Frye, who has experience at guard and center. Left tackle D’Ante Smith and Herrin, both multiple-year starters, are expected to be back in 2020 to anchor the left side of the line. Right guard Sean Bailey (redshirt senior) and right tackle Matt Morgan (redshirt junior) will also return with starting experience next season.

The Pirates also redshirted Peyton Winstead, a player with starting center experience who will be a redshirt sophomore next season. Rising redshirt freshman Noah Henderson also started a few games at right tackle in 2019.

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – ECU head football coach Mike Houston officially reinstated Juan Powell and Delvontae Harris back into the football program on Tuesday morning.

This announcement comes after the sophomore linebacker and freshman cornerback both had their felony charges dropped after being arrested back in August.

The two players returned to the practice field Tuesday morning.

“They are extremely remorseful,” said Houston after practice Tuesday. “They are disappointed in the way they represented the program and the university and they are determined to not let this incident define them. If I did not feel that way, they would not be with us. But I do feel like both of them made a mistake. I do believe in second chances as long as I’m convinced the individual will take advantage of the second chance and has become a better person because of it.”

Previous Story

Charges have been dropped against two East Carolina University football players who were arrested just days before the season began.

Court records show Juan Powell, 18, and Delvontae Harris, 20, performed community service prior to the felony charges of breaking and entering of a motor vehicle being dismissed on Thursday.

The two were arrested on August 24th after police say they received a call about two men pulling on car door handles and breaking into cars in the area of East 8th and Forbes streets.

Powell and Harris were suspended indefinitely the next day by head coach Mike Houston. There’s no word from ECU whether the two will return to the team or not.

The two players performed 50 hours and 45 minutes of community service with ECU’s Campus Living “moving campus living furniture and organizing it in two of our warehouses.” They also did 32 hours of community service for Greenville Little Leagues performing various duties.

Previous Story

Two ECU football players were arrested Saturday morning after admitting to breaking into at least one vehicle.

Greenville police say they received a call around 3:00 a.m. Saturday morning about two males pulling on car door handles and breaking into cars.

Police responded to the area between E. 8th Street and Forbes Street, and found Juan Powell, 18, and Delvontae Harris, 20. The two men were identified by a witness.

Nothing has been reported stolen from any of the vehicles.

Both Powell and Harris have been charged with felony Breaking and Entering of a Motor Vehicle.

According to an announcement Sunday from head coach Mike Houston, both players have been suspended indefinitely from the team.

The decision came after Houston and ECU athletics officials were made aware of the charges filed, and meetings were conducted by Houston and each player.

“As I have stated before, certain things are non-negotiable,” Houston said. “Representing East Carolina University in a negative light is something we take very seriously. Delvontae and Juan are suspended indefinitely and any decisions regarding their continued association with our program will not be made until the campus and legal process reaches a conclusion. While I am disappointed with the actions of both players, we will support them throughout this process. Moving forward, our focus is centered on NC State.”

GREENVILLE, NC (WITN) – Buffalo Bills wide receiver and former ECU Pirate Zay Jones was arrested Tuesday night in Los Angeles.

Jones is now out of jail.

A Los Angeles Police Department spokesman tells WITN News that officers were sent to the 900 South Figueroa Street around 11:20 p.m. their time because a man was breaking glass doors and windows.

LAPD says Jones was taken into custody and booked for felony vandalism.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office says it is asking for additional investigation into the case and they have not formally charged the football player.

Records show that Jones was released from the LA County Jail at 7:45 a.m. eastern time. His next court date is listed for April 11th.

The Buffalo Bills released a statement Tuesday saying “We are aware of the incident involving Zay Jones. We are still in the process of gathering more information on the matter. At this point, we will have no further comment.”

TMZ released a video of the what happened and it shows Jones struggling with his brother Cayleb, who was reportedly trying to prevent Jones from jumping out of a 30th floor window.

Jones was scheduled to come to Greenville this weekend to sign autographs to raise money for Aces for Autism. There’s no word yet on the status of that event.

Police last week obtained DNA samples from two people charged in the revenge slaying of former East Carolina University football player Anthony Domonique Lennon, who police say lost a shipment of drugs headed to Raleigh from the West Coast.

Detectives got DNA samples from Jamar Vick Allen, 35, of Raleigh, and Ashanti Rahdee Bennett, 33, of Greenville. Bennett, who owns a tattoo parlor in Greenville, is charged with murder. Allen is charged with felony conspiracy to commit murder, a spokesman at the Wake County jail reported Monday.

Investigators think that Allen – who goes by the nickname “Mar” – and Bennett financed a large shipment of drugs from Seattle to Raleigh in May of last year. Police say Lennon had hired a woman to transport the drugs. The drugs were intercepted by police in Chicago.

Bennett and Allen blamed Lennon for the loss of the drugs and set up his fatal shooting last year, according to search warrants made public Friday at the Wake County Clerk of Courts Office.

Lennon was shot to death on June 23 in the parking lot of Raleigh’s Bahama Breeze, a popular Caribbean restaurant, on June 23. That was about a month after the drugs were seized by Chicago police.

Police did not disclose in the warrants what drug or drugs were involved in the deal or how the woman was traveling when she was stopped in Chicago. A Raleigh detective said Chicago authorities confirmed the story about her arrest, according to earlier search warrants filed in the case.

Investigators say Bennett and Lennon were together in the Bahama Breeze parking lot on Wake Forest Road, standing by Lennon’s black Range Rover, when two armed men walked up to the pair and shot Lennon several times.

Although there were many people in the parking lot, Lennon was the clear target of 10 or more gunshots. He was pronounced dead in the parking lot, police reported.

Investigators later recovered 19 spent shell casings in the parking lot.

Two other men – Wantavius Burney Jackson, 25, of Kinston, and Clifton Jason Spellman III, 25, of Greenville – were arrested in late October and charged with felony conspiracy to commit murder, according to records filed with the City County Bureau of Identification.

Raleigh Detective J.L. Zellmer told Superior Court Judge W. Donald Stephens, who granted some of the search warrants in August, that cell-tower data showed phones owned by Bennett, Jackson, Spellman and Allen were all in the area of the tattoo parlor a few hours before Lennon was killed.

The data also showed that the four phones moved to Raleigh and were connecting with a cell tower near the Bahama Breeze at the time of the homicide.

Jackson’s, Spellman’s and Allen’s phones then moved back to Greenville, police wrote. Bennett stayed at the restaurant, where he was questioned by police.

Lennon was a defensive back for the ECU Pirates from 2011 to 2015. Lennon, known as “Domo” to his teammates, earned three letters while playing for the Pirates.

He had moved to the Raleigh area from Suffolk, Va., where his family lives and where he was buried.

Bennett is being held without benefit of bail at the Wake County jail, a jail spokesman reported Monday.

Allen and Spellman are housed at the jail under $1 million bails each. Jackson’s bail is $500,000, a jail spokesman said.
