Matteo Guendouzi could be facing an FA charge and potential ban after his bust-up at Brighton.

Arsenal midfielder Guendouzi grabbed Brighton forward Neal Maupay by the throat at the end of a stormy clash at the Amex on Saturday and could now face punishment.

Football Association chiefs are waiting to see whether the row is included in referee Martin Atkinson’s report before deciding if they will take action.

The FA could still step in even if it was not seen and take retrospective action by charging Guendouzi which could lead to a fine and suspension.

But it would seem highly likely that Guendouzi gets charged unless Atkinson says he saw the incident and decided not to take action.

Matteo Guendouzi could be facing an FA charge and potential ban

But under the FA’s fast track process, Guendouzi could even be banned before Thursday’s trip to Southampton.

It came after Guendouzi had a running battle with Brighton match winner Maupay who was accused by Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno of causing his knee injury which led to him being stretchered off.

Leno, who is now facing a lengthy lay-off with a serious knee ligament injury, pointed the finger at Maupay after the Brighton striker pushed him and caused him to land awkwardly.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta cleared Maupay of doing it deliberately but the players were incensed and Guendouzi was fuming throughout the game.

Maupay fell to the floor after another incident during the game but TV replays showed that Guendouzi poked him in the stomach.

Guendouzi could be banned before Thursday’s trip to Southampton

But the bust-up at the end of the game following Maupay’s winner for Brighton incensed Arsenal and led to Guendouzi having a row.

Maupay said afterwards: “Some of the Arsenal players need to learn humility maybe sometimes. They were talking a lot, particularly one of them.

“I’m sorry about what happened to Bernd Leno, I never meant to hurt him. I wish him a speedy recovery.”

BREAKING NEWS: England star Kieran Trippier is charged with breaching the same FA gambling rules that saw Daniel Sturridge hit with four-month ban over bets placed related to his £20m move to Atletico Madrid from Tottenham

  • Kieran Trippier faces a ban from football after allegedly breaching betting rules
  • The FA have charged him over bets placed related to his move to Atletico Madrid
  • Trippier said: ‘I have at no stage placed football related bets during my career’
  • He has been charged with breaching the same betting rules as Daniel Sturridge
  • Sturridge received a four-month suspension and was hit with a £150,000 fine

England defender Kieran Trippier is facing a lengthy ban and a fine after being charged by the Football Association with breaching betting rules.

The matter relates to his £20 million move from Tottenham to Atletico Madrid in July last year.

An FA statement read: ‘Kieran Trippier has been charged with misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of the FA’s betting rules during the period of July 2019. He has until May 18 2020 to provide a response.’

THE TWO FA RULES KIERAN TRIPPIER ALLEGEDLY BROKE

Rule E8(1)(a): a participant shall not bet, either directly or indirectly, or instruct, permit, cause or enable any person to bet on – (i) the result, progress, conduct or any other aspect of, or occurrence in or in connection with, a football match or competition; or (ii) any other matter concerning or related to football anywhere in the world, including, for example and without limitation, the transfer of players, employment of managers, team selection or disciplinary matters.

Rule E8(1)(b): where a participant provides to any other person any information relating to football which the participant has obtained by virtue of his or her position within the game and which is not publicly available at that time, the participant shall be in breach of this Rule where any of that information is used by that other person for, or in relation to, betting.

Trippier released a statement of his own, saying: ‘I have fully complied with the FA’s investigation on a voluntary basis and continue to do so.

‘While a professional footballer, I have at no stage placed football-related bets or received financial benefit from others betting.’

As the 29-year-old right back now plays in Spain, the FA must appeal to FIFA to impose any ban.

It is believed Trippier will claim that he has have been the victim of friends making bets, without his knowledge, off the back of light-hearted information that had been disclosed in private.

It is not believed that a high number of bets were placed.

Daniel Sturridge was hit with a four-month global ban earlier this year after being found guilty of breaking betting rules following allegations that he passed on inside information over a potential transfer in January 2018.

The former Liverpool striker, 30, was originally given a six-week ban with four of them suspended.

English striker Daniel Sturridge, , has been suspended from all football-related activity until June

English striker Daniel Sturridge, whose contract with Turkish club Trabzonspor was ended in March, was suspended from all football-related activity until June for breaching betting rules

GAMBLING BAD BOYS

Six other high-profile players who have been punished in relation to betting on football:

JOEY BARTON: In 2017 Barton, then at Burnley, was banned for 18 months and fined £30,000 for placing 1,260 football bets over a 10-year period. Ban was later reduced by five months.

DANIEL STURRIDGE: In March, Sturridge was banned for four months and fined £150,000 after being found guilty of breaching betting rules.

MARTIN DEMICHELIS: In 2016, Manchester City’s Demichelis was fined £22,000 for placing 29 bets on football matches.

CAMERON JEROME: Stoke striker Cameron Jerome was fined £50,000 in 2013 for breaking FA betting rules.

ANDROS TOWNSEND: In 2013, as a Tottenham player, Townsend was fined £18,000 and handed a four-month ban from football for breaching betting regulations.

DAN GOSLING: Gosling, then at Newcastle, was fined £30,000 in 2014 for multiple football-related bets.

But the FA successfully appealed against the ruling of an independent commission.

In addition to seeing his suspension increased to four months, an appeal board also doubled his fine to £150,000.

Trippier’s case is not identical to Sturridge’s but the alleged offences are similar, indicating that Trippier appears likely to be handed a suspension.

The former Tottenham defender was one of England’s best players during their euphoric run to the World Cup semi-finals in 2018. He left the London club at the end of last season after falling out of favour with former manager Mauricio Pochettino, but has cemented his place in Diego Simeone’s Atletico side since moving to Spain.

Atletico have backed their defender, telling Sportsmail: ‘The player has told us that he is calm about the situation because he has done nothing wrong.

‘He thinks it’s ridiculous that someone is trying to link him to something like this.

‘He is going to co-operate fully to clear it up as soon as possible.’

FA RULES ON BETTING

Players cannot bet on a match or competition in which they are involved in that season, or which they can influence, or any other football-related matter concerning the league that they play in.

Participants are also prohibited from using or passing inside information for betting.

Participants covered by the ban will be prohibited from betting, either directly or indirectly, on any football match or competition that takes place anywhere in the world.

This also includes a worldwide ban on betting on any other football-related matter. For example, the transfer of players, employment of managers or team selection. The passing of inside information to somebody that uses the information for betting remains prohibited.

If players are found guilty of breaching rules, then this can lead to financial penalties, suspensions, and in some instances, lifetime bans.

Eric Dier has been charged by the Football Association after climbing into the stand to confront a Totteham supporter after their FA Cup exit to Norwich and could face a hefty ban. The England international saw his brother in an argument with a fan in the south stand of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and climbed up several rows of seats to intervene. The incident, which was investigated by the Metropolitan Police, happened after Spurs had lost a fifth-round penalty shoot-out to the Canaries on March 4. A statement from the FA read: “Eric Dier has been charged with misconduct for a breach of FA Rule E3. “It is alleged that the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder’s actions at the conclusion of the Emirates FA Cup fixture against Norwich City FC on Wednesday 4 March 2020 were improper and/or threatening. “Eric Dier has until Friday 8 May 2020 to provide a response.” The FA has warned that the case does not come with a set sanction, meaning that if Dier accepts the charge or is found guilty, his punishment will be decided by an independent panel, which could see him land a hefty suspension. Spurs coach Jose Mourinho was highly supportive of his player after the incident and said he hoped Dier would not be subject to a club sanction. Mourinho said: “I think Eric Dier did something that we professionals cannot do but in these circumstances every one of us would do. “Because when somebody insults you, and your family is there, and you get involved with the person that is insulting you, in this case a younger brother, I think Eric did what we professionals cannot do. “But I repeat, probably everyone of us would do. I repeat, we professionals we cannot do, but I repeat I am with the player and I understand the player.” Dier’s team-mate Dele Alli is still waiting for the outcome of his charge. Alli was charged by the FA on February 26 for misconduct after he posted an ill-advised video on Snapchat about coronavirus a fortnight earlier and he is understood to have launched an appeal. Alli could also face a suspension once the season can resume if his charge his upheld. Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva received a one-match ban after a similar offence in a disciplinary procedure which took six weeks from charge to punishment. Australian Associated Press

Kiko Casilla has received praise for how he’s dealt with his FA charge of racist abuse against West Brom winger Jonathan Leko.

Leeds United first choice keeper Casilla served two of his eight suspended matches after being found guilty of using abusive language aimed at Leko, prior to the coronavirus outbreak prompting the suspension of the campaign.

Yet he’s been applauded for his response and mental strength to the episode by Leeds’ director of football Victor Orta.

Albion youngster Leko, who spent the first half of the season on loan at Championship rivals Charlton Athletic before suffering a season ending injury and returning to The Hawthorns, was playing for the Addicks against Leeds at The Valley in September when the pair clashed in the second half before the taking of a corner and the referee intervened.

Following Casilla punching the aforementioned corner kick clear, he was then heard uttering the abusive language for which he was charged.

Casilla denied the charge before the end of November and requested a hearing in front of an independent regulatory commission, but the charge was unanimously upheld. He was also charged £60,000 and ordered to attend an FA education programme.

In the meantime he’s been advising young deputy Ilan Meslier, Orta explains.

“Kiko arrived less time ago [than Pablo Hernandez],” Orta told EFE. “He has had adversities and has managed to overcome [them], he has known how to feel the colours of the club and interpret what this team is.

“I am also very proud because, with all the adversities he has suffered, he is still mentally very strong and helping a lot.

“Even with the current situation, he is helping Meslier, the young goalkeeper, after the sanction was received. The truth is I am very proud of both (Casilla and Hernandez) of them.”

A charge that former England women’s boss Mark Sampson used racist language during a club meeting at Stevenage has been found not proven.

Sampson was charged with misconduct in November over the incident, which was alleged to have occurred during a discussion over player recruitment.

It was alleged that while talking about signing a new player on September 2, 2019, Sampson said: ‘…a black Nigerian centre back, you can’t rely on them.’

Stevenage coach Mark Sampson has been cleared of misconduct following an FA hearing

Stevenage coach Mark Sampson has been cleared of misconduct following an FA hearing

But a hearing held earlier this month found the charge not proved and dismissed it, the FA said in an announcement on its official website.

The findings of the hearing also found that Sampson was branded as a ‘snake and spineless c***’ by former Stevenage boss Dino Maamria.

The 48-year-old was sacked on September 8 following a poor start to the season and Sampson, who was working as his assistant manager, was promoted to caretaker boss in his place.

Maamria admitted to being ‘annoyed and disappointed’ with Sampson as he expected all of his staff would leave the club with him.

After Sampson decided to stay on, he sent a WhatsApp message to him using the derogatory terms.

Ex-Stevenage boss Dino Maamria called Sampson a 'snake and spineless c***' via WhatsApp

Maamria was in the meeting where Sampson was alleged to have used racially discriminatory language towards a Nigerian player.

He told the FA that he responded to the alleged comment by saying: ‘no wonder Eni Aluko made a complaint, she must have been right about you’.

Ali Uzunhasanoglu, another member of Maamria’s staff, also gave evidence about the alleged comment made by Sampson.

Maamria was making reference to the former England women’s striker, who accused Sampson of making a racist remark about her Nigerian family not bringing Ebola to a game at Wembley.

Another allegation came from Aluko’s England team-mate Drew Spence, who complained about Sampson asking if she had been arrested before and then suggesting jokingly she had been arrested four times.

Sampson was cleared following the two investigations by the FA, but the governing body were forced to apologise in October 2017 when barrister Katherine Newton ruled following a third investigation that, Sampson was not racist, but on ‘the balance of probabilities’ had made comments that ‘were discriminatory on the grounds of race.’ Sampson also apologised.

Ex-England women's forward Eni Aluko accused Sampson of making a racist remark in 2017

Ex-England women’s forward Eni Aluko accused Sampson of making a racist remark in 2017

Sampson had been sacked as England’s women’s manager a month earlier by the FA after they found ‘clear evidence of inappropriate and unacceptable behaviour’ due to his relationship with a female player, understood to be over 18, during his time as Bristol Academy boss, who he managed between 2009 and 2013.

However, Sampson eventually brought an unfair dismissal claim and received a ‘significant’ settlement in 2019.

It also later emerged that Sampson received a three-game ban by UEFA after verbally abusing two female officials and leaving one fearing she was about to be hit with a metal pole during England’s Euro 2017 semi-final loss against Holland.

UEFA concluded the ‘language Sampson used and his attitude grossly violated the basic rules of decent conduct’ and accused him of displaying an ‘aggressive and insulting attitude.’

An FA statement on Monday said: ‘A charge against Mark Sampson for a breach of FA Rule E3 has been found not proven by an independent Regulatory Commission.

‘It was alleged that a comment made by the Stevenage FC first team coach breached FA Rule E3(1) as it was improper and/or abusive and/or insulting.

‘It was further alleged that the comment also constituted an ‘aggravated breach’, which is defined in FA Rule E3(2), as it referenced race and/or colour and/or nationality.

‘Mark Sampson denied the charge and requested a personal hearing that took place at Wembley Stadium on 9 and 10 January 2020.’

A statement from Stevenage chairman Phil Wallace read: ‘The ‘not proven’ outcome was obvious to us after a very thorough investigation of the facts four months ago and I am pleased that the panel’s 17 pages of findings issued today concur with our own internal investigation conducted in September.

‘I am delighted that Mark is now able to concentrate fully on his future and not be troubled by allegations made by former manager Dino Maamria and former coach Ali Uzunhasanoglu after they had been dismissed.

‘The club have stood shoulder to shoulder with Mark because the evidence presented by those independents present at the time conflicted with the allegation.

‘Our club will never tolerate racism and we implement the EFL Equality Code of Practice to manage the club and safeguard the nine key protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, but that doesn’t mean we will stand idly by if we feel allegations are being used for a purpose.’

Rangers have been hit with two Scottish FA charges over the conduct of staff and players during matches in December.

One charge relates to December 29’s Old Firm victory over Celtic, with the other for their 3-0 win over Hibs.

Both Rangers and Hibs have been cited under Rule 204 for a touchline incident between the two’s coaching staff at Easter Road on December 20.

The flashpoint resulted in the Edinburgh side’s assistant John Potter and Ibrox coach Tom Culshaw being dismissed to the stands.

Rule 204 states that clubs should ensure that officials, staff, employees and players “conduct themselves in an orderly fashion at all times during and/or after a match”.

The clubs face a fine if the charges are proven, and the two individuals have each been charged with misconduct under Rule 203 and face suspension.

The Old Firm charge includes the dismissal of coach Michael Beale from the touchline.

Beale faces a touchline ban after being cited individually for misconduct under Rule 203.

The two charges for Rangers have a principle hearing date of February 6, as do the charges faced by Hibs, Potter, Culshaw and Beale.

The full wording of Rule 204 states: “All Clubs and recognised football bodies shall procure that its officials, Team Staff, employees and players conduct themselves in an orderly fashion at all times during and/or after a match.

“In particular, Clubs and recognised football bodies are responsible for ensuring that its officials, Team Staff, employees and players refrain from any one or a combination of the following: (a) becoming involved in a confrontation (b) conduct that is likely to lead to or to exacerbate or prolong a hostile or argumentative situation with players and/or team staff from the opposing team and/or match officials (c) conduct that may otherwise incite disorder.”

Gestures made towards the crowd by Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos during the Old Firm game also caused controversy, with the SFA saying Morelos received a booking for the gesture he made towards Celtic fans as he walked off the pitch after being red-carded by referee Kevin Clancy.

Neither player has been cited in the round of charges issued today.

Gary Neville has branded suggestions Oli McBurnie would face an FA charge over his ‘obscene gesture’ at a football match a “disgrace”.

The Sheffield United striker was spotted in the stands at Cardiff City Stadium on Sunday for their clash with his former club Swansea.

McBurnie joined the legions of travelling Swansea fans in the away end for the south Wales derby, as the Championship sides played out a fairly uneventful 0-0 draw.

Indeed it was McBurnie who has managed to take all the headlines, after he was photographed making a rude gesture with his hands at the home fans.

Sky Sports reported the 23-year-old could face action from the FA, as pundit Neville shared their story and blasted the prospect of the star being punished.

“That’s a disgrace,” Neville tweeted. “This lad has done the most normal thing I’ve seen from a footballer for a long time. He goes to support his team and is pictured, filmed and ends up with this.”

Former Swansea hero Lee Trundle commented: “Exactly mate, people moan that players are too far detached from the fans then when one has a day out as a fan they do this.”

Fortunately for McBurnie, the FA opted not to hand out a punishment to the Blades’ frontman, instead reminding his of his responsibilities as a role model.

McBurnie was sporting a bucket hat as he cheered on Swansea, for whom he made 62 appearances from 2015-2019.

He joined Sheffield Utd in the summer in a deal that could potentially rise to £20million, which at the time was the highest transfer involving a Scottish player.

Alongside him in the stands were Swansea players Joe Rodon and Courtney Baker-Richardson, and UFC star Brett Johns.

It is the latest controversy involving McBurnie, after he was charged with drink-driving back in October.

Defending lawyer Jeremy Rosenberg told the court that McBurnie had only had one drink before he was pulled over in his Audi R8.

The court heard he was 18 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath over the legal limit of 35.
