Former Breakers player Glen Rice Jr has been allowed to leave the country and return to the United States despite facing a serious violence charge.

The 29-year-old American was arrested last November and charged with assault with intent to injure after an incident at an Auckland bar.

Today, the nearly 2m-tall swingman was due to appear again in the Auckland District Court.

However, he was missing, with rumours circulating that Rice had left New Zealand some time ago.

Rice’s lawyer, Peter Tomlinson, confirmed the situation.

He asked Judge Emma Parsons to excuse his client’s attendance for today’s hearing.

So where was Rice? Texas, his lawyer said.

Tomlinson cited the global Covid-19 pandemic as an excuse for the basketballer’s absence and inability to return to New Zealand and face the charge.

The judge pardoned Rice’s absence from today’s hearing, but also noted the unusual situation of continuing his bail without forcing him to comply with its conditions.

Rice, who has played for the Washington Wizards and was a second-round pick in the 2013 NBA draft, had joined the Breakers just 10 days prior to the alleged assault as an injury replacement.

Just a couple of weeks after his arrest, however, Rice was in trouble again after allegedly breaching his bail conditions. It lead to the Breakers tearing up his contract.

During Rice’s first court appearance, Breakers owner Matt Walsh was sitting alongside him and told media afterwards that the club would let the matter “play out” through the justice system.

The case will be back in court again in August, when a date for a judge-alone trial is to be set. Judge Parsons has already excused Rice’s attendance for that hearing.

Rice, who is the son of former NBA star and champion Glen Rice, has earlier pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Football Association chiefs are waiting to see whether the row is included in referee Martin Atkinson’s report before deciding if they will take action.

The FA could still step in even if it was not seen and take retrospective action by charging Guendouzi which could lead to a fine and suspension.

But it would seem highly likely that Guendouzi gets charged unless Atkinson says he saw the incident and decided not to take action.

But under the FA’s fast track process, Guendouzi could even be banned before Thursday’s trip to Southampton.

It came after Guendouzi had a running battle with Brighton match winner Maupay who was accused by Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno of causing his knee injury which led to him being stretchered off.

Leno, who is now facing a lengthy lay-off with a serious knee ligament injury, pointed the finger at Maupay after the Brighton striker pushed him and caused him to land awkwardly.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta cleared Maupay of doing it deliberately but the players were incensed and Guendouzi was fuming throughout the game.

Maupay fell to the floor after another incident during the game but TV replays showed that Guendouzi poked him in the stomach.

But the bust-up at the end of the game following Maupay’s winner for Brighton incensed Arsenal and led to Guendouzi having a row.

Maupay said afterwards: “Some of the Arsenal players need to learn humility maybe sometimes. They were talking a lot, particularly one of them.

“I’m sorry about what happened to Bernd Leno, I never meant to hurt him. I wish him a speedy recovery.”

NEW CASTLE, Pa. —

The body of a 19-year-old New Castle man who was reported missing earlier this month has been found, authorities confirmed early Monday evening.

New Castle police found the body of Amari Wise in an area between a creek and Pennsylvania Avenue, said Lawrence County District Attorney Josh Lamancusa.

A news conference was held Tuesday following the discovery of the body.

A crowd made up of community members and the teen’s family and friends watched on as police investigated. Lulu Bennett, with community advocacy group WWC The Voice, has followed this case that has led to recent rallies outside the New Castle police station.

“We’re just tired because every time we turn around it’s a black child missing,” she said. “It’s a black kid getting killed and no justice and that’s what we’re here for.”

Earlier in the day, police said they filed charges of homicide and tampering with evidence against 20-year-old Connor Henry. He was in custody in Ocean City, Maryland, awaiting an extradition hearing.

Henry’s father, 47-year-old Todd Henry, is charged with conspiracy to commit homicide, obstruction of justice and tampering with evidence, police said. He was in custody at the New Castle Police Department Monday afternoon.

Police said Wise was reported missing June 5.

According to a criminal complaint, police interviewed a confidential informant who told them that Connor Henry shot Wise during an argument in the garage of the Henrys’ home on Adams Street, where the informant and several other people had been drinking and smoking marijuana.

“Amari Wise arrived by himself. They were hanging out for approx. 10-15 minutes when Wise started arguing with another male,” police said in the complaint. “The argument became heated and Wise was standing over the other male, who was seated on a couch. (The informant) said that Wise had a fanny pack slung across his chest. Wise told the male he ‘was going to shoot him’ and put his hand on the fanny pack. At that time Connor Henry, who was standing behind Wise, shot Wise.”

Another informant provided a description of the incident that “was relatively the same” but said that Wise’s gun was “partially removed from the fanny pack when Connor Henry shot him,” police said in the complaint.

“Amari did not deserve what they did to him,” said Dorothy Wise Weathersbe, aunt of Wise.

Henry will be extradited back to New Castle in the next couple of days.

Henry’s father, 47-year-old Todd Henry, is in jail in New Castle. He faces three criminal charges including tampering with evidence.

A witness told police that the day after Wise was killed, Henry’s father was power washing the garage floor.

Weathersbe said she believes more people were involved in her nephew’s death.

“They need to pick up everybody that’s involved,” she said. “When I say everybody, I mean everybody.”

Chief Salem dispelled rumors that the suspects are his family members. The chief said he has no relationship with Connor and Todd Henry, but he said his great grandmother and someone in their family were close friends and possibly relatives.

Chief Salem told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 that during his lifetime he has had no contact with the two men. He said he immediately told the family this, and according to him, they were fine with it and are confident with his role in the investigation.

A FOOTBALLER is facing jail after admitting sexual activity with an underage girl.

Tyrell Robinson, 22, of South Ockendon, admitted three vile charges against him yesterday.

Robinson is a former Bradford City footballer and has been warned he could face jail after he admitted the sex offences, one against a 14-year-old girl.

Robinson admitted engaging in sexual activity with a child,

making an indecent image of a child and distributing an indecent image of a child, when he appeared at Bradford Crown Court yesterday.

He will be sentenced at a later date.

Robinson admitted engaging in sexual activity with the teenager in Bradford on August 13 2018.

He also admitted making and distributing an indecent image of a child via Snapchat on the same date.

He denied a further charge of distributing an indecent photograph of a child in December 2017, and the court heard the prosecution will not proceed with this count.

The winger, who was sacked by Bradford for gross misconduct after he was charged by police in February, arrived at court wearing a black face mask, white trainers, a dark red coat and cropped, grey, checked trousers.

He was granted bail until his sentencing and was ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register before he left court.

Judge Jonathan Rose said: “Dealing with you Robinson, you pleaded guilty to all matters save the last count.

“The prosecution will not seek to try you on that count.

“Your case is now adjourned to be sentenced.”

He continued: “You must not assume that the fact that I’m adjourning sentence and granting you bail is to mean that any particular sentence will be imposed upon you.

“All options will be open to the judge who deals with your case, and that will very much include the possibility of a prison sentence.”

A second defendant, Korrie Berman, 21, also from Essex, denied

five charges of engaging in penetrative sexual activity with a child.

He will go on trial on April 12 next year.

Robinson could go to prison for several years.

MIRAMAR (CBSMiami) – Two NFL players arrested in South Florida had their first court appearance Sunday.

Deandre Baker and Quinton Dunbar are facing multiple armed robbery charges.

A judge allowed bond for both Baker and Dunbar despite the state’s wishes.

Baker’s bond was set at $200,000 while Dunbar was offered bail at $100,000.

However, they are not allowed to have contact with witnesses and must turn over and firearms they own.

Both men are expected to be released sometime Sunday. Their lawyers mentioned during the hearings that both Baker and Dunbar had no criminal history.

The men turned themselves into police on Saturday after warrants were issued for their arrests.

Investigators said it all stems from an incident at a house party in Miramar Wednesday night.

One of the witnesses told police that “attendees were playing cards, video games and gambling” when an argument broke out involving Baker. The witness said Baker flipped the card game table, and then pulled out a gun as did Dunbar.

Baker, Dunbar, and two other men, one identified only as “Shy” began robbing other people at the party of thousands of dollars in cash, luxury watches, and other valuables, witnesses told investigators.

Police said the four men then fled the home in three vehicles: a Mercedes Benz, a Lamborghini, and a BMW. Witnesses said the vehicles were parked in a way that would make it easy to leave quickly, leading detectives to believe the robbery was planned. No injuries were reported.

Dunbar‘s attorney Michael Grieco said, “He did not participate in any robbery.” He said that 4 alleged victims and a witness changed their stories saying “…any robbery or assault did not involve Mr. Dunbar…” that “…he fled the home.”

Baker and Dunbar are both from Miami.

Baker was one of three first-round draft picks the Giants had last season.

“We are aware of the situation. We have been in contact with Deandre,” the Giants said in a statement. “We have no further comment at this time.”

Dunbar signed with the Washington Redskins as an undrafted free agent out of Florida in 2015 and was traded to the Seahawks in March.

“We are aware of the situation involving Quinton Dunbar and still gathering information,” the Seahawks said in a statement. “We will defer all further comment to league investigators and local authorities.”

Dunbar spent Thursday morning on a video conference with the Seattle media for the first time since being traded from Washington to the Seahawks in March.

“You just want to feel wanted at the end of the day. I just hope to repay them with the way I carry myself as a person,” Dunbar said on the video conference.

North Queensland Cowboys forward Thomas Gilbert is facing three weeks on the sidelines for a crusher tackle on the New Zealand Warriors’ King Vuniyayawa.

In just his second game of first-grade, Gilbert has been charged with grade two dangerous contact to the head or neck.

The base penalty for that charge is 300 points, or three weeks, but worryingly for Gilbert he has 55 carry-over points from a previous incident.

An early guilty plea may have seen him escape with a two-week suspension but the carry-over points means that is highly unlikely unless he fights the grading of the charge.

The incident happened in the 44th minute of the Warriors impressive 37-26 victory over the Cowboys at Central Coast Stadium.
