PEARL RIVER — More than eight months after the fiery crash that took the lives of her cousin and a high school friend, the Orangeburg woman who drove the sports car that raced down Route 304 and a second driver have been charged with criminally negligent homicide, police said Wednesday.

Orangetown police accused Aisha Radoncic, then 17, and Jason Castro of driving recklessly on Oct. 13 as they raced down the road, triggering a crash that killed two people in Radoncic’s 2017 Porsche Macan.

Radoncic’s car plunged off the Route 304 overpass onto the train tracks for the Pascack Valley line, bursting into flames. Castro of Nanuet drove a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta and was not injured.

Two passengers in the Porsche, Pearl River High School senior and football player Altin Nezaj, 17, and 15-year-old Saniha Cekic of Brooklyn, were killed. Radoncic, who was treated at the Westchester Medical Center and released, and Cekic were cousins.

Both Radoncic and Castro pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Police arrested Castro and Radoncic on two felony counts of criminally negligent homicide and misdemeanor counts of reckless driving, speed contests, and races. They also were given several vehicle and traffic law infractions.

Orangetown police arrested Radoncic on Monday and Castro on Tuesday.

Capt. James Brown said the incidents is an open criminal case and certain information cannot be released at this time.

Orangetown Police Chief Donald Butterworth said the investigation took time and dedication.

“Our Accident Investigation Team and their partners in the NYS Police and the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office have been deeply committed to this investigation from its start,” he said.

Butterworth and District Attorney Thomas Walsh also recalled the young people who died in the crash.

“Today our community relives the horrible tragedy that claimed the lives of two teenagers, taken from us with there whole lives in front of them,” Walsh said. “The allegations are that the two arrested individuals were engaged in a road race.

“We need to remind our young drivers that cars aren’t toys,” Walsh said. “What appears to be an exciting race turns into a tragedy that has forever impacted numerous families and Pearl River as a community. Our sympathies go out to all the families involved in this horrible event.”

Pearl River school Superintendent Marco Pochintesta said the victims of the Oct. 13 crash continued to be remembered by the district community.

“As we approach graduation, we especially recall the memory of Altin Nezaj, member of the Class of 2020, who we have held in our hearts throughout the year, and we offer our thoughts to the Nezaj, Cekic and Radoncic relatives and loved ones,” Pochintesta said in a statement.

Castro was arraigned by Justice Patrick Loftus and released without bail pending a court appearance scheduled for Aug. 10. Radoncic was arraigned Tuesday in the Youth Part of the Rockland Superior Court by Judge Larry J Schwartz. She was released  without bail for a scheduled court appearance on June 30.

The crash occurred on northbound Route 304 in the vicinity of the Crooked Hill Road overpass at approximately 3:26 p.m. that Saturday over the Columbus Day weekend. The road has had numerous accidents in the area.

Orangetown and state police accident investigation officers spent weeks reconstructing the crash and reviewing the evidence with the state police to determine the cause. Detective Sgt. James Sullivan said at the time there was no indication of drug or alcohol use by the drivers or passengers.

Nezaj, who came from a large, close-knit Albanian-American family, was an excellent student and a standout athlete at Pearl River High School.

On the Pirates football team, Nezaj wore number 71, a 6-foot-2-inch, 205-pound defensive lineman. The entire team attended his wake at a Yonkers funeral home.

His wrestling coach remembered him as a great teammate and competitor whom they called “Big Al.” In track-and-field, he threw the discus and shot put.

Nezaj died at the scene, while emergency room personnel pronounced Cekic dead at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. She had been airlifted to the hospital.

Driver not culpable: Lawyer

Castro’s attorney, Gerard Damiani, said he had yet to see any evidence from the police and prosecution concerning his client. Damiani said the prosecution asked the judge for a delay in presenting evidence and witness statements to the defense within 10 days of arrest under the state justice reforms. The judge did not make a decision, he said.

Damiani said he originally thought Castro would be involved in a civil case, but then the police began interviewing him.

“Aside from the tragic deaths and pain suffered by the families, we don’t have any indication our client is criminally responsible,” Damiani said. “I have no information other than the allegations. I have no indication there was any agreement to have a race.”

Attorney John Hughes, representing Radoncic, said he’s awaiting the investigative reports before commenting. He said she’s still recovering from her injuries.

“It was a terrible tragedy and my heart goes out the families who lost loved ones,” Hughes said. “Ms. Radoncic also was a victim and not the culpable party.”

An investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol is underway of a former Tech football player charged with a DUI and a fatal hit-and-run on Jan. 25 in Horry County, South Carolina.

Riley Patton, 23, was driving east on Highway 544 near Cabots Creek Drive around 1 a.m. when he ran into the center median and struck a parked truck on the median and the pedestrian outside the vehicle.

A Horry County coroner identified the pedestrian as Timothy Shulkcum, 55, and officials pronounced him dead at the scene.

Highway patrol officers stopped Patton as he fled the scene to Peachtree Grocery and placed him into custody and booked at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center of North Myrtle Beach.

A Horry County judge set the bond at $200,000. Patton posted bail and was released on Jan. 28.

Patton played for Tech as a long snapper for three years. He started 30-plus games in his career and snapped every ball in varsity play in his final two seasons, according to Tennessee Tech player information.

Patton is a student at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina, and was a member of the football team. Patton is no longer allowed to play.

Police have charged a suspect in the fatal stabbing of Clay Beathard, the starting quarterback on the Long Island University football team, brother of an NFL player and grandson of a former NFL general manager.

Beathard, 22, and 21-year-old Paul Trapeni III were stabbed Saturday, Dec. 21 at 2:50 a.m. in Nashville, Tennessee during a fight involving several persons outside the Dogwood Bar & Grill at 1907 Division Street, in midtown, according to Metro Nashville Police.

The stabbings appear to have resulted from an argument over a woman that began inside the bar and then turned physical when the parties went outside, police said. The dispute began over an unwanted advancement made by a man toward the woman in the bar, police added.

Multiple persons were involved in the outdoor fight during which the two men were both fatally stabbed in their sides.

Beathard, of Thompson Station, Tennessee, and Trapeni, of Franklin, Tennessee, were both transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where they died.

A third stabbing victim, Alvin Jefferson (A.J.) Bethurum, 21, suffered injuries to his eye and arm and is continuing to recover, said police.

Police now say 23-year-old Michael Mosley has been charged with two counts of criminal homicide and one count of attempted criminal homicide.

Mosley has a long rap sheet that includes multiple aggravated burglary, attempted aggravated burglary and drug-related arrests and convictions dating back five years.

Mosley has been identified as being present both inside and outside of the Dogwood Bar, including when the fight occurred, police said.

Beathard, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound junior, appeared in seven games before missing the remainder of the season due to injury this season.

He completed 52-percent of his pass attempts (94-for-182), throwing for 1,071 yards and four touchdowns.

Beathard was the son of country music songwriter Casey Beathard and Susan Beathard.

Clay Beathard’s brother, C.J., is a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers picked up an emotional 34-31 win over the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday night after C.J. had returned home to Tennessee prior to the game to be with his family.

”The 49ers family was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the tragedy involving C.J. Beathard’s younger brother, Clayton,” the 49ers said in a statement. “We extend our heartfelt sympathies to C.J. and the entire Beathard family as they cope with the unthinkable loss of a loved one.

Another brother, Tucker Beathard, is a country music singer/songwriter.

Grandfather, Bobby Beathard, is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame after winning four Super Bowls as an NFL general manager with four different teams: the Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, Washington Redskins and San Diego Chargers.

“Clay was an amazing, big and soft-hearted human being with an undeniable love for the Lord,” the Beathard family said in a statement. “He had his family’s, friends’ and teammates’ backs even to a fault. I wish he would have been more inclined to take the high road but he hated ‘wrong.’

“That is what we will hold in our hearts because we know he is smiling now. He always worried about all of our welfare, never his own.”

Clay Beathard is also survived by sisters Channing and Tatum.

LIU football coach Bryan Collins said Clay Beathard had a “love of life, people, especially his teammates” and was a “shining light in our program.”

“All of my thoughts and prayers are with the Beathard Family,” Collins added. “Clay, you will be remembered always.”

*Kamiyah Street, the starting point guard on the Kennesaw State women’s basketball team, was taken into custody by Atlanta police on Thursday for her link to the murder of 21-year-old Nashiem Hubbard-Etienne.

Police confirmed to the Atlanta Journal Constitution that the 20-year-old was arrested in connection to the July 16 “targeted shooting” death of Hubbard-Etienne, whose body was found in an Atlanta apartment complex. Police believe the incident was a robbery gone awry.

Street is one of five people indicted on the murder charges. She is facing eight charges, including three counts of felony murder, criminal attempt to commit robbery, and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Street was named in the indictment along with: Cortez Devon Banks, 22; Dontacus Brantley, 20; Johnerton Blake Gilstrap, 21; and Tobias Raynard Wells, 20. Police are still searching for an additional suspect, per ESPN.com. All five are charged with murder and felony murder, both of which carry an automatic sentence of life in prison.

District Attorney Paul Howard said in a statement that police identified Street by reviewing surveillance video. An independent investigation of the shooting “clearly indicated Street’s involvement with the death,” Howard said.

The 14-count indictment filed Oct. 22 says Hubbard-Etienne was shot during an armed robbery attempt and at least one shot was fired at a second man. The indictment does not say who fired the shots.

“We were made aware Thursday evening that Kamiyah Street of the KSU women’s basketball team was arrested and is being held, pending charges,” a Kennesaw State athletic department spokesperson said in a statement. “The individual has been suspended indefinitely from all women’s basketball team and athletic activities. Neither the university nor the athletic department have any additional information at this time.”

Thompson could not immediately be reached for comment Tuesday afternoon.

According to a statement released by JSU Tuesday afternoon, Clark has “been suspended from the football indefinitely” pending the outcome of his case.

According to JSU’s roster, Clark is currently a junior at the university.

Harris died on April 18 after being hit by a car at Siwell Road and Byram Drive, the station reported. Clark was injured during the accident and taken to the hospital.

Thompson noted that state law requires evidence and blood samples to be taken when there is a fatal crash.

A mugshot of Clark was not immediately available.

JSU suspended two other football players Tuesday after they were arrested and charged with robbery.

Jakaiszer Glass, 20, of Holcomb, and Carl Jones, 21, of Greenwood, were arrested Tuesday by JSU, according to Hinds County Jail records. Details of what led to the charges were not immediately available Tuesday afternoon.

Both men were linebackers for the university.

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A Norfolk State University graduate charged with killing one of the school’s football players told a dispatcher he fatally shot the man because he was trying to rob him, according to a 911 recording.

The Virginian-Pilot reports a prosecutor played 23-year-old Jaquan Anderson’s 911 call in court Monday during his preliminary hearing. He could be heard saying, “I had to do it.”

Anderson is charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in the slaying of Nicholas Ackies, an 18-year-old defensive lineman originally from Richmond.

Anderson did not speak in court Monday.

General District Judge Robert Carter sent the case to a grand jury.

Anderson’s attorney declined comment to the newspaper outside the courtroom, as did Ackies’ relatives.

The London man accused of back-to-back stabbings Tuesday night that left one man dead and another injured was a former junior hockey player with a troubled past that involved severe drug addiction and an armed robbery conviction.

Tony Huff-Williams, 35, of London, has been charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of 44-year-old Roy Joseph Gowdy Tuesday evening on Grey Street — a man friends and family are remembering as a generous father and grandpa who would go the extra mile for those he loved.

Just three hours before, and only four blocks away from where Gowdy was killed, a 25-year-old man was stabbed at 241 Simcoe St.

The man hurt at the Simcoe Street apartment complex around 6:30 p.m. was rushed to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said Thursday.

When police arrived at 530 Grey St. at about 9:55 p.m., Gowdy was rushed to hospital where he later died of his injuries.

Huff-Williams has been charged with assault, uttering threats and aggravated assault in the first attack, along with first-degree murder for Gowdy’s death.

He was arrested downtown late Tuesday evening, London police said Thursday.

The charges stemming from twin attacks are the latest chapter in Huff-William’s tumultuous past.

He had once been a promising athlete, joining the Plymouth Whalers in the Ontario Hockey League in 2000. But when behavioural issues cropped up and he was released by the team, his life took a turn for the worse.

London police on Wednesday morning continued their investigation into a fatal stabbing at 530 Grey St.

In the years that followed, Huff-Williams battled mental health issues and drug addiction, details that emerged at his sentencing for the crack-cocaine fuelled knife-point robbery of a cab driver in 2011.

He was sentenced to three years in prison for the armed robbery.

At the time, the court heard Huff-Williams had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and depression and was struggling with substance abuse issues.

Huff-Williams is being held in custody after the two stabbings Tuesday night. Police would not say if Gowdy and the accused were known to each other.

The slain man’s friends and family are reeling from the sudden loss, the city’s second homicide investigation this year.

“It just makes no sense and that’s the hardest part to accept,” said Darleen Johnston, a longtime friend.

“He was such an easy going guy. . . . For this to happen, it’s a shock. I still feel like he’ll walk through the door any moment.”

Gowdy had been taking care of Johnston’s puppy all day Tuesday before returning to the Grey Street home he shared with his mother.

Over the years, the 44-year-old had held down odd jobs in carpentry, hospitality and landscaping. He was recently laid off from a job at a dog treat manufacturer and was looking for work, Johnston said.

“He was just a kind and gentle soul. . . . He was always a giver, never a taker,” she said.

Neither Johnston or her husband Randy McKenzie, who have both known Gowdy for years, had ever heard him mention Huff-Williams.

“Roy and I, we talked about everything. No secrets,” McKenzie said. “So I really don’t understand who this is or why this happened.”

Gowdy had two children, a son and a daughter, and had just become a grandfather nine months ago, his former partner Christyl Cartier said.

Gowdy lost his dad to cancer when he was in his twenties, Cartier said. He was close with his mom and took care of her.

“We didn’t always see eye-to-eye, but he was a good person. Over the last three months, I’ve seen a change and he was actually trying to get back into his children’s life,” she said.

“He was turning his life around and actually doing well. The time my kids had with him was taken away.”
