An University of Montana Griz basketball player was charged by the Missoula County Attorney’s office Friday with two counts: strangulation and assault of a partner or family member. The strangulation offense is a felony charge.

According to charging documents obtained by the Kaimin, Naseem I. Gaskin, a sophomore transfer student on UM’s basketball team, was arrested Wednesday, Aug. 19, when police responded to a domestic abuse call at the ROAM Student Living apartments.

The police report stated “Jane Doe”, Gaskin’s girlfriend, claimed that she got into an argument with Gaskin and he kicked her off of the bed which caused bruises on her leg. She then returned to her feet and grabbed Gaskin’s phone, at which point he pinned her to the bed with his elbow. She couldn’t breathe.

Next, “Jane Doe” claimed that she tried to bite and pull Gaskin’s hair to stop him, to which he responded by grabbing her neck with one hand and continuing to strangle her.

The filed report state victim told the police she remembered thinking she did not want to die while Gaskin was strangling her. Gaskin then allegedly retrieved his phone and stopped strangling her. The girlfriend then left the apartment and called the police to report the assault.

Officers at the scene observed significant bruising to Doe’s neck consistent with finger marks, according to charging documents. The police documented the scratches on her neck, bruises on her left wrist and bruises under her bicep. Officers observed bruises on her leg, which she attributed to getting kicked off of Gaskin’s bed.

The officers also noted that victim’s voice was hoarse and she stated that her neck “really hurt” and that her throat was sore. Gaskin was then arrested for the assault on the victim.

In a statement to the Kaimin, UM athletics said Gaskin had been suspended from all athletics. Gaskin has also been placed on interim suspension from the University.

“The University and athletic department are aware of the incident involving student-athlete Naseem Gaskin,” the statement said. “We understand the seriousness of the allegations and absolutely do not condone such behavior.”

The Brooklyn Nets head to Orlando for the restart without Kevin Durant or Kyrie Irving… and now Wilson Chandler has opted out as well.

The veteran and free agent to be this offseason chose not to go citing family considerations, reports Malika Andrews of ESPN.

“As difficult as it will be to not be with my teammates, the health and well-being of my family has to come first.”

Nobody should question a player putting his family and health first, especially going into an untested scenario like the NBA’s bubble/campus in Orlando. Chandler also said he agreed with Kyrie Irving, who has questioned the NBA’s return to play and the impact that would have on the Black Live Matters and social justice movements. Chandler will not be paid for the restart games now.

On the court, this hurts the Nets’ depth. Chandler was playing 21 minutes a night coming off the bench at the four behind Taurean Prince, with Rodions Kurucs the only other guy getting quality minutes there. Chandler had become very important to the Nets defense, and it’s that end of the floor where he will be missed the most.

Chandler’s decision seems to have caught the Nets’ front office by surprise. They recently signed Tyler Johnson for the restart and had to let Theo Pinson go to create the roster spot; had the Nets known of Chandler’s plans they could have signed Johnson without releasing Pinson. Brooklyn reportedly is signing Justin Anderson to fill Chandler’s roster spot.

Off the court, Chandler is a free agent to be and the buzz around the league is he is likely to move on from Brooklyn this offseason.

Antonio Brown pleaded no contest Friday to a felony burglary with battery charge and two lesser misdemeanor charges related to a January incident with a moving truck company outside his home in Hollywood, Florida.

Brown will face no jail time, though he will have two years of probation and 100 hours of community service as part of the plea. The free agent wide receiver will also have to undergo a mandatory psych evaluation and attend a 13-week anger management program as part of the plea. He was also ordered not to have contact with the victims in this case.

The no-contest plea means he’s accepting the punishment without formally admitting guilt in the case.

His lawyer, Carson Hancock, says the case was a civil dispute that led to an overcharged criminal case. He had been working with Broward County prosecutors for an acceptable conclusion to this case, and it would have been settled earlier if not for the coronavirus pandemic slowing down court proceedings.

Hancock says adjudication was withheld in the case, meaning Brown will not have a felony record as a result of the plea.

“Antonio’s case resulted from a misunderstanding concerning the payment of costs for the moving of Antonio’s family from California to Florida,” Hancock said in a statement Friday.

Hancock says that after Brown paid the fee, the moving truck driver demanded an “extra time” fee, and while they were discussing that, Brown’s friends started unloading boxes from the van, including some that were not Brown’s goods. Hancock says they put them back but were still charged with burglary and battery. Hancock says that Brown decided to resolve the matter quickly rather than have it be a “protracted legal case.”

Jeremy Fowler breaks down what Antonio Brown’s no-contest plea in his Florida case means for his future in the NFL.

Brown wants to return to the NFL in 2020, and he’s been working out with several NFL stars in South Florida this offseason in preparation for if/when a team calls him.

An NFL spokesman said Brown’s conduct remains under review and is still being investigated. He could still be subject to league discipline in the form of a fine or a suspension.

Brown, 31, will be allowed to travel around the country for work purposes, provided he checks in with his probation officer. He last played for the New England Patriots in September 2019, before he was accused of sexual and personal misconduct. The Patriots released him one week later, and he hasn’t been signed by a team since.

The seven-time Pro Bowler appeared to hint at a return Thursday with an Instagram post that read, “big 4x soon.”

Brown was accused of throwing a rock at the driver’s moving truck, then later forcing his way into the driver’s side of the main cabin of the truck and striking the driver after a disagreement over payment escalated outside of Brown’s home. The arrest warrant obtained by ESPN says Brown “physically pulled and grabbed” the victim, causing multiple abrasions and a ripped shirt.

Former Indianapolis Colts and Green Bay Packers linebacker Antonio Morrison is facing at least one felony charge stemming from a series of erratic disturbances in Carmel, Indiana, according to court documents filed this week in Hamilton County.

Morrison, 25, was charged Monday with intimidation, court records show. No attorney had been listed for him as of Friday.

The Colts declined to comment on the case.

A probable cause affidavit obtained by IndyStar says Morrison allegedly accused a neighbor of “stepping into his space” on April 22 and made lewd comments to the man, such as “I am going to screw your wife,” Carmel police said in the affidavit.

The next day, on April 23, police responded to a verbal disturbance call from the same neighbor. The man reportedly told officers that Morrison came to his front door, rang the doorbell and yelled “that he was going to kill” him.

The man said he felt in fear for his life, the affidavit filed Monday stated.

Court records show a warrant was issued Monday for Morrison’s arrest.

On Wednesday, Carmel Police filed a second affidavit seeking to seize a firearm owned by Morrison, according to a copy of the document.

The affidavit says Morrison presents “an imminent risk of personal injury to (himself) or to another individual.”

That affidavit cites the April incidents, but it also details two other incidents from the month of May.

On May 1, Carmel Police Officer Jerek Murphy said Morrison approached another neighbor and threatened him, telling him to “get inside your condo (expletive),” the document said.

The neighbor did not want to press charges, police said in the affidavit, but said that Morrison’s behavior has become “increasingly erratic and aggressive.”

This past Sunday, May 10, officers and the Carmel Fire Department responded to a fire call at a condominium.

Before authorities entered the building, Morrison came to the main floor window and said he had burnt some food and had it all under control, according to the affidavit. Morrison, though, refused to come outside when he was told to, the document said.

A shotgun was seen by the entry door to the apartment.

Carmel Police Detective Chad Amos found that Morrison has an approved gun permit with validation dates of Oct. 25, 2016, through Oct. 25, 2020, according to the affidavit.

But he also found that Morrison was denied by the National Instant Criminal Background Check System from possessing a firearm on March 9, 2020, according to the document.

In addition to the Carmel charge, jail records show that Morrison was arrested Thursday in Indianapolis and remains held in Marion County Jail on preliminary charges of battery and battery against a public safety official. Court records show he has not been formally charged.

A report provided to IndyStar from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office says Morrison committed battery on a security officer. Additional details weren’t provided, but the office told IndyStar that the incident happened at Community Hospital North.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the Carmel and Indianapolis incidents are related.

Morrison has two upcoming court dates stemming from the incidents. The first, on May 18, is to address the preliminary battery charges. The second, on June 11, is a hearing to address the firearms seizure.

Morrison was a fourth-round draft pick by the Colts in 2016 and was traded to the Green Bay Packers in 2018. The team released him in 2019, after one season.

Former NFL linebacker Antonio Morrison was arrested this week and charged with intimidation, a felony, according to the Indianapolis Star.

A series of erratic behavior by Morrison led neighbors to call Carmel, Indiana, police on multiple occasions.

Morrison initially allegedly accused a neighbor of “stepping into his space” on April 22 and made lewd comments to the man, according to court documents obtained by the newspaper. A day later, the same neighbor called police, accusing Morrison of threatening to kill him.

The man told police he feared for his life, according to the affidavit.

Police issued a warrant for Morrison’s arrest Monday and a second affidavit was filed Wednesday, seeking to seize a firearm owned by Morrison.

Morrison threatened a different neighbor May 1, according to the affidavit. Then, last Sunday, the Carmel Fire Department responded to a fire call at a condominium. Morrison told firefighters through a window that he had burned food and everything was fine but refused to come outside.

Firefighters spotted a shotgun at the entry door.

Police arrested Morrison on Thursday on preliminary charges of battery and battery against a public safety official, according to the Indianapolis Star. Court records show he has not been formally charged, and it remains unclear if the Carmel and Indianapolis incidents are related.

The Colts made Morrison a fourth-round draft choice in 2016. They traded him to the Packers in 2018.

Morrison, 25, was released by the Packers on March 8, 2019.

HOUSTON – A senior defensive back for the University of Houston has been indefinitely suspended from the team following his arrest last week for assault on a 60-year-old man.

Ka’Darian Smith, a reserve cornerback for the Cougars, was arrested Nov.6 and charged with a second-degree felony for aggravated assault with serious bodily injury following an alleged attack on Thaddeus Lewis, according to court records.

“We are aware of the serious allegations regarding Ka’Darian Smith,” University of Houston said in a released statement. “He has been suspended indefinitely from the Houston football program. We will have no further comment at this time.”

According to court records, when police officers arrived at the ICON Apartments at 2509 Elgin, they found the victim with severe facial injuries and bleeding profusely. Lewis, who was taken to the hospital, had broken bones in his face, a broken nose, cracked ribs and bleeding in the ear canal.

Smith, 21, was not at the scene initially but returned and was arrested. Court records show that Smith confessed to injuring Lewis, telling officers, “I beat him up.”

The victim told officers he was approached by Smith in the garage and Smith accused him of stealing from his apartment. Lewis said he went down a stairwell and Smith again accused him of stealing. That is when Lewis said he was attacked as Smith punched him in the face several times until he fell, then Smith began kicking in the upper body until the victim blacked out, the court documents said.

Smith appeared in court on Nov.7 and was released on a $20,000 bond.

Smith, who is from Spring, has primarily been a reserve during his four years at UH. The 6-foot-1, 186-pound senior has played in just four games this season and has not been played since Sept. 28 against North Texas. He has just nine tackles on the season.

Smith is set to return to court next month and must have no contact with the victim.

Five of the top six 2014 high school recruits were drafted in the 2015 NBA Draft Lottery: Jahlil Okafor, Emmanuel Mudiay, Stanley Johnson, Karl-Anthony Towns and Myles Turner.

The exception: Cliff Alexander.

After a rocky freshman season at Kansas, Alexander was effectively forced in the 2015 NBA draft by the threat of NCAA punishment. He went undrafted, signed with the Trail Blazers and played just eight games. The next season, he signed a 10-day contract with the Nets but never played for them.

TMZ:

Former NBA player Cliff Alexander — the top H.S. recruit in the country in 2014 — was arrested Wednesday … after cops say they found a loaded gun on him during a traffic stop.

Alexander, who cops say does NOT have a concealed carry license — was arrested and booked on a felony charge of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

Alexander, 24, has been playing in France.

A Tarrant County grand jury has indicted former Texas Rangers player Josh Hamilton on a felony injury to a child charge.

Hamilton, 38, is accused of hitting and scratching his daughter in a September 2019 incident.

During the assault, he told his daughter to tell a judge “what a terrible dad I am” so that she would never have to go to his house again, according to Keller police records.

Hamilton has three children but court records show he is accused of assaulting his oldest.

When interviewed by Child Protective Services, his daughter told the interviewer that Hamilton started to assault and throw things at her after she made a comment that upset him, records show.

The former baseball player is accused of throwing a full water bottle that hit his daughter in the chest. Hamilton then pulled a chair from under his daughter and threw it at her, a warrant says.

Hamilton then allegedly took his daughter to a room, pinned her to a bed and repeatedly hit her on the back and legs, according to an arrest warrant.

Police records show Hamilton is 6-feet-4-inches and weighs 250 pounds.

Tarrant County court records show after the incident, Hamilton’s ex-wife, Katie Hamilton, filed for a temporary restraining order against him on behalf of her daughter.

Former Texas Rangers star and 2010 American League MVP Josh Hamilton was indicted on a felony charge for injury to a minor on Monday, reports Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Hamilton turned himself in to police and was arrested in October for hitting and scratching his daughter.

Jozelyn Escobedo of ABC 8 WFAA reports that Hamilton told his daughter to tell the judge “what a terrible dad I am” to ensure she would never have to visit his home again. Here is more from Escobedo:

When interviewed by Child Protective Services, his daughter told the interviewer that Hamilton started to assault and throw things at her after she made a comment that upset him, records show.

The former baseball player is accused of throwing a full water bottle that hit his daughter in the chest. Hamilton then pulled a chair from under his daughter and threw it at her, a warrant says.

Hamilton has three children and court records show he is accused of assaulting the oldest. His ex-wife, Katie, has filed for a temporary restraining order on her daughter’s behalf.

Hamilton, 38, hasn’t appeared in the majors since 2015. In addition to the Rangers, he played for the Cincinnati Reds and Los Angeles Angels over parts of a nine-season career. The No. 1 pick in 1999 draft, Hamilton’s career was delayed and at times overshadowed by substance abuse and addiction issues — including at least one reported relapse back in 2015.

During Hamilton’s career, he hit .290/.349/.516 (129 OPS+) with 200 home runs and 50 steals. He made five All-Star Games, won three Silver Sluggers, and was the 2010 Most Valuable Player.
