A former University of Oklahoma running back arrested last month is now facing a felony assault charge that could send him to prison for five years.

Oklahoma County prosecutors allege Roy Finch struck a police officer on April 15 during an altercation at an apartment complex in south Edmond. Finch, 26, of Oklahoma City, was charged Wednesday with assault and battery upon a police officer.

Edmond police arrived at the complex about 6:30 a.m. and found Finch in a vehicle “passed out behind the wheel,” police reported in a court affidavit.

Officers knocked on the window and had Finch step out of the vehicle. The vehicle smelled of marijuana, police reported.

“The defendant was argumentative and kept stating that his father was a doctor and that his name was Roy Finch,” police reported.

When one officer tried to handcuff Finch, he spun around, attempting to strike the officer in the face, police reported. Finch fled on foot through the complex after pushing the officer down, according to the affidavit.

Officers later found Finch at the complex and attempted to subdue him with stun guns, which were ineffective, police reported. At that point, multiple officers were able to get Finch to the ground and handcuff him, according to police.

Officers found 4.62 grams of marijuana in the trunk of Finch’s vehicle, according to the affidavit.

Prosecutors also charged Finch with two misdemeanors, marijuana possession and resisting arrest.

In March, Finch was charged in Lincoln County District Court with drug possession and reckless driving. That misdemeanor case is pending.

Finch played for the Sooners four years, 2010-2013. Finch later briefly signed with the New England Patriots before landing in the Canadian Football League.

Former OSU player charged

Former Oklahoma State University running back Desmond Roland II was charged in March with conspiracy to distribute marijuana. Pottawatomie County prosecutors allege Roland, 26, of Oklahoma City, conspired with others in selling the drug.

If convicted, Roland could spend two years to life in prison.

Roland played for the Cowboys four years, 2011-2014.

Former Oklahoma running back and current Calgary Stampeders player Roy Finch was arrested early Sunday morning for allegedly assaulting a police officer, the Norman Transcript reported.

Police were called to an apartment complex in Norman, Okla., because of a suspicious-looking car that had been running for over an hour

Finch, who played at Oklahoma from 2010-13, was in the car. Police smelled marijuana, and when they tried to handcuff Finch he began trying to punch the officers. He ran through the complex trying to elude police, but a perimeter was set up and he was caught.

Finch continued to be combative towards officer and eventually police used a Taser on him. However, he continued to fight while on the ground and it took several attempts with a stun gun to subdue him.

The melee caused Finch to cut his face and he needed medical attention.

Afterward, he was charged with assault and battery on an officer, resisting, and possession of marijuana. Records indicate he has not been released from jail yet.

Finch was already in the Lincoln County system — he appeared in court on March 12 on one count of possession of a controlled dangerous substance and reckless driving. He was due back in court Monday.

Finch rushed for 1,412 yards and six touchdowns in four years at Oklahoma.
