ENGLEWOOD, Colo.— A Washington Redskins player is facing five charges, including felony illegal discharge of a firearm, following his arrest in a Denver suburb Saturday morning.

The Douglas County sheriff’s office says deputies arrested 27-year-old Cody Latimer after responding to a report of shots fired inside an apartment in Englewood, Colorado.

“We are aware of the situation and have informed the NFL League Office,” a Washington Redskins team spokesman said. “We will continue to gather more information and have no further comment at this time.”

Deputies say they found three individuals in the apartment at the Zenith Meridian Apartments, one with minor injuries unrelated to a gunshot.

Latimer was taken into custody and is also facing charges of second-degree assault, menacing, prohibited use of a weapon and reckless endangerment.

Latimer posted a $25,000 bond and was released later Saturday morning.

Latimer, a wide receiver, joined the Redskins in March after two years with the New York Giants and four years before that with the Denver Broncos.

The sheriff’s office says it is continuing to investigate.

NRL stars Latrell Mitchell and Josh Addo-Carr have been charged with firearms offences following a police investigation into the players’ controversial camping trip.

The high-profile South Sydney and Melbourne players were caught flouting COVID-19 guidelines after spending the weekend with several other men in Taree.

Alongside photos of the gathering, Addo-Carr shared videos on social media of him shooting a gun.

Police will claim Mitchell gave a firearm to a person not authorised to use it, and he has now had his licence suspended and a number of guns seized by police.

The players have been issued notices to appear in court on August 4.

“Yesterday, officers attached to Manning-Great Lakes Police District commenced an investigation into alleged breaches of the Public Health Act 2010 (NSW),” NSW police said.

“During the course of the investigation, police were alerted to alleged offences under the Firearms Act 1996 (NSW).”

Mitchell attended Taree police station on Tuesday morning, where he was “issued with a Future Court Attendance Notice for the offence of give firearm to person not authorised by licence/permit”.

“His firearms licence was suspended, and a number of firearms were seized by police,” the NSW police statement read.

Addo-Carr was charged over the alleged unauthorised use of a firearm.

NRL comes down hard on COVID-19 breaches

The NRL on Tuesday sent a major warning to all players that coronavirus guidelines must be followed.

Mitchell and Addo-Carr were handed $50,000 fines – with 60 per cent on hold – and a suspended one-match ban for flouting stay-at-home orders.

“It’s certainly hard to accept such behaviour when the game is doing everything it can to persuade the community that its players are responsible and behave appropriately,” ARL Commission chairman Peter V’landys said.

“The penalties have been structured so as to give these players one further opportunity to demonstrate that they can be trusted.

“If they contravene again, then those parts of the penalty that have been suspended will be activated and they may also be subject to further sanction.”

Acting NRL chief executive officer Andrew Abdo said the league’s fines for breaching COVID-19 guidelines made no judgement on any alleged criminal activities.

“We’ll wait for any criminal matter that’s investigated by the police and make our judgements following that,” he said, speaking before the charges were laid.

“We’ll review the findings of the police and then we’ll be in a better situation to determine if anything further is required.”

Another NFL player seems to be in trouble.

Two days after Miramar, Florida, police announced arrest warrants for cornerbacks DeAndre Baker and Quinton Dunbar for armed robbery and aggravated assault, former Giant wide receiver Cody Latimer was arrested and charged on felony charges of assault in the second degree, menacing and illegal discharge of a firearm in Colorado, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department.

A police report said a witness heard gunshots and arguing inside an apartment. One unidentified person was later said to have minor injuries not related to a gunshot. Latimer, 27, was released on a $25,000 bond. He also is facing misdemeanor charges of prohibited use of a weapon and reckless endangerment.

“There’s an entire back story to this situation that constitutes one of the most highly provocative situations you can imagine,” said Latimer’s attorney Harvey Steinberg, according to ESPN. “Please withhold judgment until all the facts of what took place that night are known.”

After spending the past two seasons with the Giants, Latimer signed a one-year, $1.04 million contract with the Redskins. He spent the first four years of his career with the Broncos.

Baker, the 22-year-old Giants player, turned himself in to police Saturday.

A Park Vista High School football standout was arrested on charges of armed burglary and theft of a firearm late Monday, just months before his college career was to get underway.

Jake Collins, a senior athlete who had signed to play at Duquesne University, is accused of stealing a gun and jewelry from the suburban Lake Worth home of a Palm Beach County sheriff’s officer, according to a sheriff’s report.

Investigators say they recovered the officer’s weapon and two others from Collins’ closet at his home. The 18-year-old pawned some of the jewelry to shops in Boynton Beach and Lake Worth, the sheriff’s report said.

Collins appeared in court Tuesday morning, where a judge set his bond at a total of $32,000 on the charges he faces, which also include fraud, larceny and dealing in stolen property.

A woman who identified herself as Collins’ mother stressed to the judge that the incident was her son’s first offense.

“He’s a good boy,” she said. “I don’t understand.”

Duquesne, a private college in Pittsburgh, said it was aware of Collins’ arrest. Jerry Schmitt, the school’s head football coach, said the university would gather more information before deciding on his status.

“I’m very disappointed,” Park Vista coach Brian Dodds said of Collins’ arrest.

Collins is the Palm Beach Post’s No. 16-ranked football player in the Class of 2018. He was an All-Area honorable mention selection for the Cobras last season. He finished his Park Vista career with 142 tackles, 10 interceptions, five forced fumbles and eight pass break-ups.

The PBSO report said Collins broke into the suburban Lake Worth home Friday. According to the sheriff’s report, he was caught on video removing the screen to the garage window, opening the window and then entering the home. After leaving the home, he got into a waiting car and drove away.

The theft was reported Monday afternoon after the victims returned home. Collins was apprehended at his Lake Worth home after he was identified as the suspect.

The report said Collins confessed to taking three firearms from the home — a gun with the PBSO insignia on it, as well as a silver revolver and a semiautomatic handgun — and that officers would find the first two in his closet, along with what the report called “an additional firearm which he purchased from an unknown associate off the street that may or may not be stolen.”

Investigators found the three guns in the closet. Collins told them he had already sold the semiautomatic gun taken in the burglary “to an associate for $100 cash,” according to the report.

PBSO also found that Collins on Saturday had pawned for $20 a $1,500 man’s watch he took from the home. Collins also told authorities he took two pairs of Beats headphones from the home and that he had given both to friends, according to the report.
