NASCAR takes center stage

With the Monaco Grand Prix canceled and the Indianapolis 500 postponed until August, only NASCAR’s longest race, the Coca-Cola 600, will go off as planned at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Memorial Day Sunday, the most celebrated day in motorsports. Just as it was last week at Darlington, S.C., NASCAR will be alone in the spotlight Sunday night, using a tight health screening plan and aided by its close proximity to states with relaxed restrictions. The 600, a dusk-to-dark race that doubles as an elaborate salute to the United States military, is one of the most grueling of the season, and 100 miles longer than any other stock car race on the circuit. “I think for our hardcore fans and for the people that appreciate the history of NASCAR, the 600 is it’s own kind of animal and it’s own show,” said Martin Truex Jr. “For us in the sport and drivers especially, it’s a big one and it’s one we all want to win.”

Indy car driver A.J. Foyt was voted the Indianapolis 500's greatest driver in a vote of the 27 living champions. Foyt won four Indy 500 titles, including his last in 1977.

Foyt voted Indy 500′s greatest driver

In the lead-up to the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 in 2016, the Associated Press interviewed the 27 living race winners who voted four-time Indy 500 winner A.J. Foyt as the greatest driver, with four-time winners Rick Mears and Al Unser Sr. also receiving votes. The crash-filled 1992 race that came down to Al Unser Jr. holding off Scott Goodyear in the closest finish in history was chosen as the greatest race.

Newton’s brother transfers to Auburn

Former Howard University quarterback Caylin Newton, the younger brother of 2015 NFL MVP and 2011 No. 1 draft pick Cam Newton, will follow in his sibling’s footsteps by transferring to Auburn. Caylin Newton announced the move on Twitter on Friday. As a freshman in 2017, The younger Newton led Howard to a season-opening 43-40 road victory over UNLV in one of the biggest upsets in college football history after the Bison entered as 45-point underdogs. Newton played in four games for Howard in 2019 but sat out the rest of the season to redshirt. He then announced in October he would put his name in the NCAA’s transfer portal but still intended to graduate from Howard in May. Newton’s father, Cecil, told The Washington Post that “extenuating circumstances” led to his son’s decision to leave the program. Ron Prince, Howard’s coach for nine games in 2019, was placed on leave in November after the university opened an investigation into allegations of verbal abuse and player intimidation. Prince resigned in December, just a year after he was hired.

Olympic ski champion Veith retires

Olympic ski champion Anna Veith has twice returned to the top from serious knee injuries. A year after blowing out her knee for the third time, the 2014 super-G gold medalist from Austria is leaving the sport. Veith announced her retirement live on Austrian TV on Saturday, ending a career marred by injuries since she won her second overall World Cup title in 2015. “It was not a difficult decision. For me it feels 100 percent right,” said Veith, who turns 31 in June. Veith’s announcement in a prime-time TV show resembled the way Marcel Hirscher said farewell to ski racing almost nine months ago. Veith was the last active overall World Cup champion from Austria since Hirscher’s retirement. Veith won 15 World Cup races from 2011 to 2017, and collected eight medals from major events, including four golds.

Edelman, 33, was placed in handcuffs and put into a police cruiser at the scene, but was later released with the citation, said Beverly Hills police Sergeant Thomas West in a phone interview. Edelman was not taken to the police station for booking, West said.

He is scheduled to appear in Los Angeles County Superior Court on April 13.

Beverly Hills Police Chief Sandra Spagnoli said in an e-mail late Sunday afternoon that the police report would not be released until the district attorney reviews the case.

Earlier in the evening, Edelman appeared in an Instagram photo posted by former Celtics star Paul Pierce, which showed Edelman, Pierce, and Detriot Lions player Danny Amendola at Cantina Frida, which has a location on North Beverly Drive.

In a statement to the Globe Sunday, restaurant spokesman David Thompson said: “Julian Edelman was a guest at Cantina Frida [Saturday] night with some friends. They were polite and friendly.”

A Patriots team spokesman told the Globe Sunday that the team is aware of the situation, but had no comment.

The team announced Friday that Edelman was named the New England Patriots 2019 Ed Block Courage Award Winner, according to a statement on the Patriots website.

The award is bestowed to a player each year “who best exemplifies the principles of courage and sportsmanship while also serving as a source of inspiration,” the statement said.

Edelman is scheduled to be honored with fellow award winners from the other NFL teams in Baltimore on March 28, the statement said.

The citation wasn’t Edelman’s first run-in with the law. In November 2011, Edelman was arrested and charged with indecent assault and battery for allegedly groping a woman at a Copley Square nightclub. Suffolk County prosecutors dropped the charges a month later after concluding they would not be able to meet burden of proof in a trial.

Video surveillance footage of the incident showed physical contact between Edelman and the alleged victim was brief and “did not meet any elements of a crime,” according to a statement from the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.

Edelman signed a two-year, $18 million extension last May, which will keep him under contract through the end of the 2021 season.

Edelman finished the 2019 season with a career-high 1,117 receiving yards despite missing three games due to injuries. He caught 100 passes (six touchdowns) and will need knee and shoulder surgeries this offseason.

The Patriots were eliminated by the Titans in the AFC Wild Card round Jan. 4 with a 20-13 loss at Gillette Stadium.

“She was trying to enter the stadium with an oversized bag and she had been told several times, ‘no,’ “ said Robert Bolger, chief administrator for Foxborough police. “She tried several times to go to a different gate. She was ordered to leave the property.”

When Caitlin Hill refused to leave the grounds of the stadium, she was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and trespassing, Bolger said. Officers were putting Caitlin Hill into a prisoner transport van for the trip to the Foxborough station for booking when Richard Hill intervened with police, Bolger said.

“He saw her as they were trying to get her into a van to bring to the police station, and he started to interfere with the officers,’’ Bolger said. “He was told several times to back up and he would not. And he ended up getting arrested.”

Both Hills were arraigned Monday in Wrentham District Court, but the criminal charges against the couple were changed into civil infractions by Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey’s office. Richard Hill’s charge of intimidating a police officer, a felony, was dismissed prior to arraignment by Morrissey’s office in the “interests of justice,” said Morrissey spokesman David Traub.

Caitlin Hill’s two charges were converted into civil infractions and she was ordered to pay a fine of $250 each and Richard Hill was fined $500 for the single count of disorderly conduct he faced, according to Traub, who said it was “not unusual” for Morrissey’s office “to convert disorderly conduct and trespassing charges in that way.”

Hill’s Boston-based attorney, Francis T. O’Brien, called the incident “a terribly unfortunate event that should never have escalated beyond a routine encounter with stadium security.”

“Commendably, the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office recognized this and the matter was appropriately resolved as a civil, non criminal, infraction,” he said in an e-mail. “This was a fair and proper resolution and the matter is closed.”

Hill, in a statement, said “Despite Saturday’s events, my great respect for law enforcement remains unchanged.”

“However, seeing my wife handcuffed for a problem that started because of her fanny pack was extremely difficult for me to witness,” he said. “This was all overblown and we are glad to have it behind us.”

Hill, a Milton native, joined the major leagues in 2005 and spent several seasons with the Boston Red Sox. For the past three years, he has played for the Los Angeles Dodgers but is now a free agent working to recover from off-season surgery to his pitching arm.

Hill, who is 39, is slated to receive the 2019 Tony Conigliaro Award at the annual Boston Baseball Writers Dinner Jan. 16 at the Seaport Hotel in Boston. The award is given to a “major leaguer who has overcome adversity through the attributes of spirit, determination, and courage that were trademarks of Tony C.”

In February, the couple donated $575,000 to support research on rare and undiagnosed genetic diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital for Children, a charitable effort they began after losing their son, Brooks Hill, about two months after he was born at MGH on Dec. 26, 2013, the Globe reported.

.

Correction: Due to a reporting error, an earlier version of this story misstated one of the two criminal charges filed against him by Foxborough police. Hill was charged with intimidating a police officer, a felony. Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey’s office dismissed the charge before arraignment.
