The Brooklyn Nets head to Orlando for the restart without Kevin Durant or Kyrie Irving… and now Wilson Chandler has opted out as well.

The veteran and free agent to be this offseason chose not to go citing family considerations, reports Malika Andrews of ESPN.

“As difficult as it will be to not be with my teammates, the health and well-being of my family has to come first.”

Nobody should question a player putting his family and health first, especially going into an untested scenario like the NBA’s bubble/campus in Orlando. Chandler also said he agreed with Kyrie Irving, who has questioned the NBA’s return to play and the impact that would have on the Black Live Matters and social justice movements. Chandler will not be paid for the restart games now.

On the court, this hurts the Nets’ depth. Chandler was playing 21 minutes a night coming off the bench at the four behind Taurean Prince, with Rodions Kurucs the only other guy getting quality minutes there. Chandler had become very important to the Nets defense, and it’s that end of the floor where he will be missed the most.

Chandler’s decision seems to have caught the Nets’ front office by surprise. They recently signed Tyler Johnson for the restart and had to let Theo Pinson go to create the roster spot; had the Nets known of Chandler’s plans they could have signed Johnson without releasing Pinson. Brooklyn reportedly is signing Justin Anderson to fill Chandler’s roster spot.

Off the court, Chandler is a free agent to be and the buzz around the league is he is likely to move on from Brooklyn this offseason.

The arrest of an NFL player could have turned deadly when police held a gun to his face when taking him into custody, TMZ reports.

Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Bashaud Breeland was arrested Tuesday (April 28) at a gas station in Fort Mill, South Carolina, after a York County Sheriff’s Deputy claims he saw him and two other individuals in a car smoking marijuana.

Breeland, 28, recently signed a new one-year contract with the Chiefs, who won Super Bowl LIV in February.

The cop says that Breeland became irate when questioned and a confrontation between the two began, then escalated. In video footage from the arrest, the officer tries to put Breeland in handcuffs, but he refused. The officer eventually pulls out a taser and tells him to cease resisting.

“Put your hands behind your back or you will get tased,” the officer can be heard saying. “Turn around and face away from me! You’ll get tased!”

But Breeland gets away from the officer and moves back into the car. That’s when the cop pulls out his gun and places it inches from Breeland’s face. “Let me see your hands! … I’m not playing!”

Breeland gets out of the car, lays on the ground and allows the officer to place him in handcuffs. He was arrested and taken to jail, TMZ says.

Breeland was charged with resisting arrest, having open containers of liquor in a motor vehicle, marijuana possession and driving without a license, according to ESPN. He was released from jail Tuesday night on bond.

Breeland’s lawyers questioned the reason for police drawing a gun on him and reportedly “look forward to reviewing all available evidence in this matter.”

Breeland himself did not comment directly on the incident, only posting to Instagram a segment from his song “Bree Talk under his rap moniker, 26 Breezy.

[Editor’s Note: Explicit lyrics]

A Chiefs representative said the team was aware of what happened but had no comment, according to ESPN.

Cody Latimer (Douglas County Sheriff’s Office)

On Saturday, Washington Redskins wide receiver Cody Latimer was arrested for allegedly shooting a gun inside a Colorado apartment.

On Monday, details from the police report became public with police claiming Latimer threatened his best friend with a gun after a night of drinking at a poker game, according to a report from 9 News in Denver.

According to the report from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department, the evening began when Latimer called up Roderick English to set up a poker game at English’s apartment. English identified himself to police as Latimer’s best friend.

Police: Drinking, gambling before gunshots

English told police that he and Latimer both consumed alcohol once the game ensued alongside seven or eight other guests, including English’s girlfriend Madi Shal. The report states that Latimer got into an argument with another player, prompting English to call off the game and kick everyone out of this apartment.

Latimer returned to English’s apartment 30 minutes later with a gun and blamed English for the confrontation, according to the report. He told English that he had saved two bullets for him and Shal and threatened to “kill everybody,” the police report states.

Latimer then calmed down and emptied the clip and the chamber of his gun before becoming enraged again and firing two shots near English, according to the report. Police say that English then pinned Latimer against the wall before Latimer hit him in the head with his gun. The altercation de-escalated for good when English again pinned Latimer against the wall and urged him to calm down, according to the report.

Police arrived after reports of shots fired.

Lawyer references sex assault investigation

According to ESPN, Latimer’s attorney Harvey Steinberg told a Douglas County court on Monday that law enforcement officials contacted him about an investigation of a sexual assault of Latimer’s 4-year-old son allegedly committed by one of the players at the poker game.

No law enforcement officials have publicly verified Steinberg’s claim, and no other details are known.

Latimer faces 3 felonies

According to the police reports, Latimer is charged with felony assault in the second degree, felony menacing, felony illegal discharge of a firearm, misdemeanor prohibited use of weapons and misdemeanor reckless endangerment.

He was released on $25,000 bond and ordered to return for a July 24 court date.

Latimer played his first four seasons with the Denver Broncos after being drafted out of Indiana in the second round in 2014. Douglas County is just south of Denver.

Latimer played two seasons with the New York Giants before signing with Washington this offseason.

In six NFL seasons, Latimer has tallied 70 catches for 935 yards and six touchdowns while also working as a kick returner.

The wife of Baltimore Ravens safety Earl Thomas III was arrested last month in Texas after pointing a loaded gun at her husband’s head during an argument.

Nina Thomas was arrested on April 13 in Austin, Texas, and charged with first-degree felony burglary of a residence with intent to commit aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to a court document obtained Thursday by ESPN’s Jamison Hensley.

A team spokesman said the Ravens are aware of the situation but that Thomas did not notify the team of the incident.

Earl Thomas was not arrested, and an attorney representing Nina Thomas said Thursday that she “was wrongfully arrested.”

According to an arrest warrant from the Travis County magistrate court, Nina Thomas told police that she confronted her husband at a rental home because she believed he was cheating on her.

Nina Thomas told police she used Snapchat to track Earl to the rental home, brought two other women with her, and found her husband and his brother in separate bedrooms with two other women.

According to the document, an officer viewed cellphone video footage that shows Nina Thomas placing Earl’s 9 mm Beretta less than a foot away from her husband’s head, with the safety disengaged and her finger on the trigger.

Nina Thomas told police she had called the other women to help confront her husband and took his handgun with an intent to “scare him,” according to the document. She had taken the magazine out of the gun but was unaware of a round in the chamber.

According to the arrest warrant, Tiffany Loving, who was one of the women at the rental residence with the Thomas brothers, told police that Earl asked Nina to give him the gun, but Nina began hitting him with her free hand, striking him in the eye, arm and groin. Earl and Nina then fell on the ground and “tussled” for the gun, the warrant said.

The two women who arrived with Nina — Camisha Garlow and Kayla Baham-Heisser — were also arrested for burglary of a residence.

Earl Thomas, a seven-time Pro Bowler who turned 31 on Thursday, wrestled the gun away from Nina Thomas, according to the document. When police arrived at 3:41 a.m., they found Nina Thomas with a knife and chasing Earl, who had the gun.

Earl Thomas indicated in an Instagram post Wednesday night, which has since been deleted, that TMZ would be releasing details of the altercation and said he wanted to “get ahead” of the report.

“It’s not really anybody’s business,” he said in the since-deleted post. “It pisses me off that it got out, but it’s the world we live in today. But instead of talking about us, just keep us in y’all’s prayers. Stuff like this happens.”

Thomas said he is talking with his wife and is seeing their three children. Nina Thomas’ first court appearance is scheduled for June 8.

Thomas is entering the second year of a four-year, $55 million contract with the Ravens and is scheduled to make $10 million this season. In his first year with the Ravens, Thomas reached the Pro Bowl after making 49 tackles and intercepting two passes.

“We became aware of the situation when we read and saw it on the reports late last night and early this morning,” a Ravens spokesman told ESPN.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Tex. (KBTX) — According to a press release, Montgomery County Communications received a 911 call from a concerned driver Saturday night around 9 p.m. They said a man, later identified as Ed Oliver, 22, was driving a white F250 recklessly while pulling a trailer with an ATV.

The caller said the area of Highway 242 they were traveling was a construction zone with a 45 mph speed limit. Oliver was not able to stay in his own lane and was speeding.

A deputy with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office located and stopped the vehicle on FM 242 near FM 1485.

After failing field sobriety tests, Oliver was placed in custody for misdemeanor driving while intoxicated. Inside Oliver’s vehicle, deputies found a small caliber pistol; Texas law states that one cannot be in possession of a handgun while engaged in criminal activity. Oliver was also charged with misdemeanor Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon.

Oliver is a defensive tackle for the Buffalo Bills. He was drafted by the Bills in the first round to the 2019 NFL Draft.

Five of the top six 2014 high school recruits were drafted in the 2015 NBA Draft Lottery: Jahlil Okafor, Emmanuel Mudiay, Stanley Johnson, Karl-Anthony Towns and Myles Turner.

The exception: Cliff Alexander.

After a rocky freshman season at Kansas, Alexander was effectively forced in the 2015 NBA draft by the threat of NCAA punishment. He went undrafted, signed with the Trail Blazers and played just eight games. The next season, he signed a 10-day contract with the Nets but never played for them.

TMZ:

Former NBA player Cliff Alexander — the top H.S. recruit in the country in 2014 — was arrested Wednesday … after cops say they found a loaded gun on him during a traffic stop.

Alexander, who cops say does NOT have a concealed carry license — was arrested and booked on a felony charge of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

Alexander, 24, has been playing in France.

AUSTIN, Texas (KXAN) — Austin police arrested the wife of NFL player Earl Thomas after they say she held him at gunpoint when she went to confront him about an affair.

Police responded to a residence in east Austin around 3:41 a.m. on April 13 for a call of a disturbance. Officers found a woman with a knife chasing a shirtless man who was holding a gun around a car. They later identified the woman as Nina Thomas, 30, and the man as Earl Thomas. Thomas, 31, is the star defensive back for the Baltimore Ravens National Football League team.

Earl Thomas told police he was staying at the apartment with a relative, that man’s girlfriend and her friend, with whom Earl said he was in a romantic relationship with, as he “worked on his relationship with his wife,” according to the affidavit.

Nina Thomas told police she and her husband fought and she got suspicious after he left and checked his Snapchat account. That’s when she told police she saw him with another woman. She told police she grabbed Earl’s gun and was going to go the apartment to scare him.

According to the affidavit, Nina admitted she put the gun to Earl’s head with the intent to scare him. She said she removed the magazine, thinking the gun would not fire and admitted to disengaging the safety. Police say when they recovered the gun at the scene there was one bullet in the chamber.

Nina Thomas was arrested and charged with burglary of a residence with intent to commit aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The wife of Baltimore Ravens safety Earl Thomas was arrested after police say she told them she pointed a loaded weapon at her husband’s head following an incident in which she caught him cheating on her.

The arrest occurred last month, but documents in the case surfaced just this week.

According to an Austin, Texas, police report obtained by NFL Media, police reached a rental home in East Austin on April 13th and found Thomas’ wife, Nina, chasing her husband on the property with a knife. Per police, Earl Thomas also was carrying a pistol that they later determined he had confiscated from his wife after she entered the home to confront him about his cheating.

Nina Thomas, 30, was arrested and charged with first-degree family violence for burglary of a residence with intent to commit aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Two women, who police say accompanied Nina to the residence, were charged with burglary of a residence.

According to the documents obtained by TMZ, Nina Thomas held a loaded gun at her husband’s head after she allegedly found him in bed with his brother and other women. She placed the gun less than a foot away from his head, with the safety disengaged and her finger on the trigger, per TMZ.

“I am here to declare that my client unequivocally and categorically denies these allegations and we look forward to our day in court where we can clear her good name,” Houston lawyer Jonathan Goins said on behalf of Nina Thomas, per USA Today.

The two, who were high school sweethearts, married in an elaborate ceremony in Texas in 2016.

Earl Thomas addressed the incident involving his wife in an Instagram video on Wednesday night to “get ahead” of a report that TMZ planned to release the details of the event in question.

“So I just wanted to get ahead of it. I mean, it’s really not anybody’s business,” Thomas said. “It’s (angering me) that it got out but it’s the world we live in today. Instead of talking about it, just keep us in y’all’s prayers. Stuff like this happens, bro. We try to live the best lives we possibly can but sometimes it don’t go as planned. Just pray for us as we go through this stuff. We’re back talking. I’m seeing my kids so just keep us in your prayers.”

Nina Thomas is set to appear in Travis County District Court on June 8th for an initial setting in the case.

“We became aware of the situation when we read and saw it on the reports late last night and early this morning,” the Ravens said Thursday morning, per a team spokesman.

Earl Thomas, 31, recorded 49 tackles, two interceptions, two sacks and a forced fumble in 15 games in 2019 after signing a four-year, $55 million contract with the Ravens in March.

A seven-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time All-Pro, Thomas has posted 713 tackles and 30 interceptions in 140 career games with the Seattle Seahawks (2010-18) and Ravens.

AUSTIN, Texas — Baltimore Ravens star Earl Thomas is listed as the victim in a domestic violence incident last month in Austin, where his wife was arrested after police say she told them she pointed a loaded weapon at her husband’s head when she found him in bed with another woman.

The incident, first reported by TMZ, happened in the early morning of April 13 at a rental home in East Austin in the 600 block of Brushy Street. Police say they responded to that location and found Thomas’ wife, Nina, chasing her husband in the parking lot with a knife, an arrest affidavit stated. Thomas, according to police, was carrying a pistol that they later determined he had taken away from Nina after she entered the home to confront her husband about cheating. Police ordered the Thomases to the ground and to drop their weapons, and the couple complied, the affidavit states.

Nina Thomas, 30, was arrested and charged with first-degree family violence for burglary of a residence with intent to commit aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Two women who police say accompanied Nina to the residence to confront her husband were charged with burglary of a residence.

Court records show Nina Thomas was released from jail later in the day after posting $25,000 bail. An emergency protective order states she cannot have contact with Earl Thomas or the woman whom she found Earl in bed with for 60 days.

Houston lawyer Jonathan Goins, who is listed as the attorney of record for Nina Thomas, issued a statement Thursday saying his client was wrongfully arrested.

“We have already gathered information which controverts every single allegation made on the night in question,” Goins said. “We have begun working with the Travis County District Attorney’s Office to ensure that these charges do not stick and Mrs. Thomas’s pristine name is cleared.”

The Ravens said Thursday in a statement: “We became aware of the situation when we read and saw it on the reports late last night and early this morning.”

Nina Thomas is set to appear in Travis County District Court on June 8 for an initial setting in the case.

Earl Thomas, who turned 31 Thursday, was not charged in the incident. He released a video Wednesday night on social media addressing the incident.

“Instead of talking about us, just keep us in your prayers,” Thomas said. “Stuff like this happens. We try to live the best lives we possibly can but sometimes it don’t go as planned. Just pray for us as we go through this stuff.”

Thomas told police that he left the home he shares with Nina in the afternoon before the incident after an argument about him drinking too much alcohol. He said he called his brother to pick him up and the two went to the downtown rental home to watch TV with two women — including one who Thomas told police he had been seeing for three or four months while he worked on his relationship with Nina.

Earl Thomas, according to his wife’s affidavit, was awoken in bed with the other woman at around 1 a.m. when Nina entered the room and pointed a black pistol at him. Nina largely corroborated the events, telling police she put the gun to her husband’s head to scare him. Police say Nina told them she removed the magazine thinking the gun could not fire but was unaware that the gun had a round in the chamber. Nina, according to police, admitted to disengaging the gun’s safety.

Nina told police, they say, that she tracked her husband’s whereabouts to the rental home through his Snapchat account, which showed several videos of Earl with the other woman. Two women who Nina brought to confront her husband were also taken into custody: her sister, Kayla Baham-Heisser, and her friend Camisha Garlow, the ex-spouse of Earl Thomas’ brother, Seth, who was with the football player at the rental home.

Baham-Heisser took footage of the incident with her phone that police reviewed. The video, according to police, shows Earl Thomas at the top of a staircase with Nina placing the gun within a foot of his head with her finger on the trigger. Nina struck Earl in the nose before the video ended, police said. The video also showed Garlow attempting to attack a woman who was in the home with Seth Thomas.

Thomas, a safety, is a seven-time Pro Bowl selection and considered one of the top defensive players in the NFL. He won a Super Bowl in the 2013 season with the Seattle Seahawks, who drafted him in the first round out of the University of Texas in 2010.
