Former West Ham United head of player recruitment Tony Henry has denied being racist “in any shape or form” despite been charged with misconduct by the Football Association over comments he made about African players earlier this year.

Henry was suspended by the Hammers before being sacked in February after he was accused of racism and discrimination for allegedly telling agents the Premier League club did not want to sign any more African players.

The Daily Mail reported he had said in an email that West Ham wanted to limit the number of African players because they “sometimes have a bad attitude” and “cause mayhem” when they are not in the team.

Those comments were deemed “unacceptable” by the club, while the Professional Footballers’ Association said it was “shocked” by the report, and the FA has since charged Henry.

But he has denied being racist and claimed he had received messages of support from African players.

In an interview with Sky Sports News he said he had been offered a player by an agent, before adding: “I went back (to the agent) and said, ‘We don’t want any more Africans and the player isn’t good enough – my scout has said the player isn’t good enough’.

“I hold my hands up, I was totally wrong. I shouldn’t have said it. But I do think it was taken completely out of context. It was never, ever meant to be racist in any way.

“The reason we said we didn’t want any more Africans was because we already had three – the day before we’d had four but one of them left. And I just felt that as the head of recruitment I look ahead down the line, and I thought ‘In 12 months’ time it’s the African Nations Cup – if we had four African players come the next African Nations Cup we’re going to lose them in January/February and we could struggle with that’.

“I would look anywhere for players. I’ve brought a lot of good players to West Ham, including a lot of players of African descent.”

Henry added: “I’ve had messages from three or four of the players and I’ve had messages from a lot of people in the game and a lot of African descent, saying basically ‘We’re right behind you mate’, and they know I’m not a racist.

“What I said was wrong. I’ve been sacked by West Ham, I’ve been at home for three months…I don’t know what it’s going to be like to get back into work but I am not racist in any shape or form.”

After charging him last week, the FA said in a statement: “Tony Henry, former West Ham United FC head of player recruitment, has been charged with misconduct in relation to comments he made which are alleged to be improper and/or insulting and/or abusive.

“It is further alleged that this breach of Rule E3(1) is an “aggravated breach” as defined in Rule E3(2), as it included reference to ethnic origin and/or race and/or nationality and/or colour. Mr Henry has until May 15, 2018 to respond to the charge.”

West Ham have six first-team squad members of African descent with Cheikhou Kouyate, Pedro Obiang, Joao Mario, Angelo Ogbonna, Arthur Masuaku and Edimilson Fernandes.

Senegal striker Diafra Sakho left the club in the January transfer window to join Rennes, with Ghana international Andre Ayew heading to Swansea.

West Ham released a statement at the time of Henry’s sacking which read: “West Ham have today terminated the contract of director of player recruitment, Tony Henry, with immediate effect following his unacceptable comments that were widely reported in the press.

“Our action follows a full and thorough investigation. West Ham United will not tolerate any type of discrimination.”

Former West Ham head of recruitment Tony Henry has been charged by the Football Association over comments he made about African players.

Henry was suspended and then subsequently sacked from his job at the Hammers after he allegedly said African players “cause mayhem” and “sometimes have a bad attitude” and didn’t want to sign any more players from the continent.

At the time of the comments, West Ham had players of African descent including Diafra Sakho, Andre Ayew, Cheikhou Kouyate, Pedro Obiang and Arthur Masuaku on the books at the club. Sakho and Ayew have since left the club for Rennes and Swansea City respectively.

During the last January transfer window, West Ham were interested in signing two African players, Algerian Islam Slimani and Cameroon-born Ibrahim Amadou but both fell through on deadline day.

At the time, Lord Ouseley – chairperson of Kick It Out – described an email sent by Henry which was leaked to the newspaper as potentially unlawful and Henry was accused of racism.

After a three-month investigation, the governing body of football have revealed Henry has been charged with misconduct and will have until May 15 to respond to the charges.

The statement from the FA said: “Tony Henry, former West Ham United FC Head of Player Recruitment, has been charged with misconduct in relation to comments he made which are alleged to be improper and/or insulting and/or abusive.

“It is further alleged that this breach of Rule E3(1) is an “Aggravated Breach” as defined in Rule E3(2), as it included reference to ethnic origin and/or race and/or nationality and/or colour.”

West Ham said on February 2 when they dismissed Henry from his post: “West Ham United…terminated the contract of Director of Player Recruitment, Tony Henry, with immediate effect following his unacceptable comments that were widely reported in the press.

“Our action follows a full and thorough investigation.

“West Ham United will not tolerate any type of discrimination.

WEST HAM’S former head of player recruitment Tony Henry has been hit with a misconduct charge by the FA over allegations of racism against African players.

Henry was exposed in February after telling agents that he was not interested in signing players from Africa because they “cause mayhem”.

West Ham launched an immediate investigation into his behaviour, and they sacked him within 24 hours — claiming they would not tolerate discrimination of any form.

Now FA disciplinary officials have hit Henry with a misconduct charge which could lead to him being banned from the game if proven guilty.

An FA statement read: “Tony Henry, former West Ham United FC Head of Player Recruitment, has been charged with misconduct in relation to comments he made which are alleged to be improper and/or insulting and/or abusive.

“It is further alleged that this breach of Rule E3(1) is an “Aggravated Breach” as defined in Rule E3(2), as it included reference to ethnic origin and/or race and/or nationality and/or colour. Mr Henry has until 15 May 2018 to respond to the charge.”

Henry is alleged to have sent an email which said the club had decided against signing any footballers from Africa amid concerns over their attitude.

He is said to have cited the behaviour of former striker Diafra Sakho, a Senegal international, as one of the reasons behind the stance – which left West Ham open to allegations they had broken discrimination laws.

It is alleged Henry said: “We had problems with Diafra Sakho. We find that when they are not in the team they cause mayhem.

“It’s nothing against the African race at all. I mean, look, there are top African players.

“It’s just sometimes they cause a lot of problems when they are not playing, as we had with Diafra. He’s left, so great. It’s nothing personal at all.”

At the time, the Hammers released a statement which read: “West Ham United have today terminated the contract of Director of Player Recruitment, Tony Henry, with immediate effect following his unacceptable comments that were widely reported in the press.

LONDON (Reuters) – The English FA has charged former West Ham United director of player recruitment Tony Henry over allegations of racial discrimination.

The Daily Mail newspaper reported in February that Henry had said the club wanted to limit the number of African players in their squad because “they have a bad attitude” and “cause mayhem” when not in the team.

West Ham suspended and then sacked Henry on Feb.2.

The FA said in a statement that Henry had been charged with “misconduct in relation to comments he made which are alleged to be improper and/or insulting and/or abusive.”

It added that this was an “aggravated breach” of the rules because it included “reference to ethnic origin and/or race and/or nationality and/or colour.”

Henry has until May 15 to respond.

West Ham’s former head of player recruitment Tony Henry has been charged with misconduct by the Football Association over comments he made about African players earlier this year.

Those comments were deemed “unacceptable” by the club, while the Professional Footballers’ Association said it was “shocked” by the report, and now the FA has charged Henry.

“Tony Henry, former West Ham United FC head of player recruitment, has been charged with misconduct in relation to comments he made
which are alleged to be improper and/or insulting and/or abusive,” said an FA statement.

“It is further alleged that this breach of Rule E3(1) is an ”aggravated breach“ as defined in Rule E3(2), as it included reference to ethnic origin and/or race and/or nationality and/or colour.

West Ham United will not tolerate any type of discrimination.

“The West Ham United family is an inclusive one where, regardless of gender, age, ability, race, religion or sexual orientation, everybody feels welcome and included.”

WEST HAM are facing a Football Association charge alleging they broke rules on anti-doping.

The FA have launched disciplinary proceedings against the Hammers claiming the club failed to ensure its “Club Whereabouts” information was correct on three occasions in the past year.

The FA have charged West Ham over an alleged breach of their anti-doping regulations

The Premier League club have been given a week to respond to the charges.

West Ham face sanctions under rule 14(d) of the FA regulations, which bring football into line with the laws of the World Anti-Doping Agency.

It surrounds the club making sure it provides information making it clear where their players, or at least one of their players, are at certain times of each day, for drug testers to potentially carry out random checks.

The Hammers have acknowledged receipt of the charges and have promised to work with the FA to resolve the issues.

FA Cup: Watch the best goals from the fifth round

There is no indication of any wrong-doing on behalf of any of the players, and it is understood the breaches are down to administrative errors.

One one occasion, it appears testers visited the correct block of flats to get a random sample from a player who was in the building, but they had been provided with an incorrect door number.

A West Ham spokesman said: “The breach relates to administrative oversights on The FA’s whereabouts system, for example a player’s address had been registered and the house number digits transposed, and the Club will be responding to The FA in due course.

“We would like to make it clear that the breach is a Club administrative matter and does not concern any of our players.”

It is a similar charge to the one brought against Manchester City earlier this season.

In that instance, City were fined £35,000 and given a warning after they admitted their own administrative errors had led to the rule breaches.

Unlike in other sports, the three strikes and and a ban does not apply in the same way to the way club’s administer their overall information in football.

It is likely the Hammers will be hit with a slap on the wrist and a fine if their explanation is accepted by the FA.

The Football Association have confirmed the reasons why Manuel Lanzini was handed a two-match ban for ‘Successful Deception of a Match Official’ in their victory at Stoke City last month.

The Argentine was charged by an Independent Regulatory Commission after he won a penalty for the Hammers after going gown under Erik Pieters’ challenge.

Although the club submitted written evidence supporting Lanzini after he denied the charge, the player was suspended after the panel, compromising of Gareth Farrelly, Stuart Ripley and Paul Raven, reviewed footage.

Lanzini’s ban followed Everton’s Oumar Niasse who was charged with the same offence after winning a penalty against Crystal Palace in November.

After the player missed the Carabao Cup game against Arsenal and the team’s league match against Newcastle United, it has now been confirmed why the club’s appeal to overturn the charge were unsuccessful.

Lanzini returned to action in the draw at Bournemouth

The panel ruled: “In the incident in question, the player whilst running at speed in the opponent’s penalty area took a final touch with his right foot away from the defender.

“It was at this point that he started to go to ground in an exaggerated manner, which included throwing his arms into the air in an unnatural way, before any contact with the opposing defender.

“In that split second he dived, before the contact from the defender who had in fact withdrawn from the challenge.

“It is not disputed that there was contact but the player anticipated this, dived towards the defender to initiate the contact and in reacting the way he did, successfully deceived the match official.”

WEST HAM are investigating allegations that Jake Livermore was abused over the death of his child.

The West Brom midfielder, 28, shoved a fan and a steward in ugly scenes at the London Stadium last night.

West Ham have identified the fan involved and have called them to the club for a meeting today.

Video footage has emerged which shows the West Brom midfielder involved in a confrontation as he was being substituted in the 64th minute.

Both clubs plan a full investigation.

Livermore’s son died in 2013 when his partner went into labour, sending the former Hull midfielder into a downward spiral that led to him facing a two-year ban after testing positive for cocaine.

The seven-cap England midfielder has previously spoken about agony he suffered over Jake Junior’s death.

In 2016, he told the Mail: “The way in which (his death) happened made it difficult to fight my own demons.

“If you lose a child in God’s hands it is completely different. To find out why he had died, that was too much for my head and my heart to take.

“That pain and hurt, it makes you do desperate things. I wasn’t thinking of the consequences.

“I was broken. Most people out there will have a son, a nephew, a little brother.

“So for me, it was a relief. The drugs were irrelevant. It could have been drugs, a gun, a car crash or whatever, the self-destruct button was the problem.”

Baggies boss Alan Pardew said: “The only thing I know is I see Jake in the crowd, which disturbed me. Obviously you don’t want to see a player in the crowd.

“There’s no way he’s going in the crowd — because I know him, he’s a great lad — unless he was provoked severely.”

Pardew admitted he did not hear whether or not his player was abused.

He added: “I’m afraid I haven’t had a chance to talk to Jake.”

In separate footage, Albion No2 John Carver can be seen pointing and remonstrating with stewards after the altercation.

Livermore was eventually led away down the tunnel and both clubs will investigate today.

The row overshadowed a dramatic match in which West Ham came from a goal down to beat their relegation rivals with an injury-time winner.

Two goals from Andy Carroll lifted the Hammers out of the bottom three.

Home boss David Moyes said: “Two great goals, a great centre-forward’s header, as good as it gets.

“I don’t think any defender could stop his leap and jump. The other shows great quality, tight angle, to complete the finish.”

Carroll, who had not scored since April 1, said: “It has been a while, I am obviously relieved.

“It was a tough game. We are disappointed with the goal we gave away, but we had to keep pushing them and we did that and got the goals.

“It was tough, I was tired at the end, but if I didn’t get into the box at the end I would have been given some stick by the staff.”

Moyes added: “I’ve got to say, for long periods it didn’t look likely we’d win.

“We lost a goal in the last minute at Bournemouth which should have counted. Newcastle scored an offside goal here. Tonight, things went for us.”

Pardew said: “It’s heart-breaking for the players. We were hanging on physically and mentally.

“It’s very evident on the pitch because we lose Matt Phillips in the warm-up, my most influential player offensively.

“But still we put in a great first half. It’s very difficult to criticise my team.”
