WARREN, Mich. — Former Michigan State basketball player Keith Appling was charged with drug crimes after authorities say they found heroin in his vehicle that he planned to sell.

Appling, 28, was arraigned Wednesday in a Warren courtroom on charges of delivery or manufacture of less than 50 grams of a controlled substance. Prosecutors said officers last Saturday found 19 grams, or a “golf ball sized” amount of heroin in a bag that was in a storage pocket behind the front passenger seat, The Macomb Daily reported. At the time of his arrest, Appling was on parole after serving jail time for gun and resisting-arrest charges.

According to court records, Appling plans to hire a lawyer. The Associated Press on Saturday called the number for an attorney who represented him during his last criminal case, but there was no answer.

His next hearing is set for Feb. 25.

Assistant Macomb County Prosecutor Derek Miller told the newspaper that the amount of heroin found in the vehicle could have provided dozens of “hits” to drug users. He described the situation as “an unfortunate set of circumstances for someone who … played on outstanding basketball teams at MSU and brought joy to a lot of people.” Appling, who was named Mr. Basketball in 2010 as the state’s top high school player, played for Michigan State from 2010-2014.

Appling and another former Michigan State player were named in a 2010 report of sexual assault, according to a 2018 Outside the Lines report. No charges were filed, and the case drew local media coverage and prompted campus protests.

Appling had two brief contracts with the Orlando Magic. More recently, he played professionally for teams in the Dominican Republic and Argentina.

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – NFL free agent Barry Cofield was arrested on multiple charges after he was found passed out behind the wheel of his Cadillac Escalade on Interstate 4, then rammed a patrol vehicle while attempting to elude officers, according to the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said Cofield’s Escalade was found stopped on the off-ramp of eastbound I-4 at West Lake Mary Boulevard around 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday. When they peered inside the vehicle, they saw Cofield slumped behind the steering wheel with the vehicle still running and in drive. His foot was on the brake, according to the report.

It took several minutes for Cofield to regain consciousness and when he did, he refused to follow commands to put his vehicle in park and instead sped off, the affidavit said.

Deputies said they followed Cofield as he swerved in and out of traffic, sideswiped a vehicle that was stopped at an intersection on Lake Mary Boulevard and International Parkway, and continued to take maneuvers to evade arrest.

Cofield stopped when he got to the front gate of the Steeple Chase subdivision in Lake Mary but still refused to get out of the Escalade, according to the report.

A patrol car was positioned in front of Cofield’s vehicle to prevent him from driving off and that’s when authorities said Cofield rammed into the patrol vehicle, the affidavit said.

Even after the crash, deputies said Cofield refused to exit his vehicle until they broke the driver’s side window.

Once Cofield was in handcuffs, officers conducted a search and found that Cofield had two small plastic bags with heroin inside, according to the report. Cofield also smelled of alcohol and his eyes were bloodshot and watery, deputies said.

Deputies said Cofield refused to undergo any field sobriety tests or provide a breath sample to have his blood alcohol content measured.

Records show Cofield was charged with fleeing and eluding a law enforcement officer, driving under the influence, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting a law enforcement officer without violence and possession of heroin.

Cofield last played for the New York Giants in 2015. The Longwood home listed in the report as his address is valued at approximately $1.4 million.

STAMFORD — A former Westhill High School assistant basketball coach was forced to resign from his coaching job at New Canaan High School following his arrest over the weekend for alleged possession of 20 bags of heroin.

Three days after the arrest by Stamford police, Jose Amor stepped down and as of Monday morning he was no longer employed by the New Canaan school system as assistant basketball coach, Athletic Director Jay Egan said in a statement.

“Mr. Amor passed the mandatory background check necessary for employment in the New Canaan Public Schools,” Egan said. “The New Canaan Public Schools has an extensive background check for all employees and will continue to use this system for all future hires.”

Amor, 30, of Davenport Drive, was charged with possession of narcotics with intent to sell, among other infractions. The events come nearly two years following another arrest after Amor allegedly warned one of his basketball players that the boy was a suspect in a shooting at a Stamford hotel.

Amor’s weekend arrest was the result of someone reporting a suspicious person at the West Avenue Shell station on Friday night, according to Capt. Diedrich Hohn.

When officers arrived at the scene they found Amor passed out behind the wheel of his car with his driver’s side door open. After waking him, he was interviewed outside his car, Hohn said.

Officers noticed a partially opened container on the passenger seat, which appeared to have possible contraband inside. An officer removed the container and found 20 folds of heroin, Hohn said.

While Amor was being booked, police found several tablets of Percocet — a pain medication made from oxycodone and acetaminophen — on him as well as a pill grinder and a straw with power residue on it, Hohn said. He was also charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia and was released after posting a $10,000 court appearance bond.

Amor’s attorney Mark Sherman declined to comment on the specifics of the case, but noted that the problem of addiction will be part of the defense.

“Sadly this opiate epidemic does not discriminate in its reach and impact,” Sherman said.

In June of 2016 following a shooting in the parking lot of La Quinta Inn on Stamford’s West Side, Amor’s career as an assistant coach was derailed after he was accused of tipping off the player.

Police said that as a result of the alleged tip-off, the Westhill basketball player disposed of the gun and the case was never closed.

In that case, Amor was charged with hindering prosecution, but Sherman negotiated the charge down to interfering with police. In March 2017 Amor completed a short probationary program for first-time offenders and the lesser charge was dismissed.

Hohn, who was head of the detective bureau at the time when Amor was charged, said he was unaware of drugs playing any part in the earlier investigation that resulted in the hindering charge.

“It was not apparent at that time he had a problem,” Hohn” said. “After his arrest this weekend, it is obvious he is struggling with an addiction problem.”
