New York Giants place-kicker Aldrick Rosas was arrested Monday on a hit-and-run charge after California authorities found him walking along a road approximately 1.5 miles away from a crash scene while his “hands, legs, and bare feet were covered in blood.”

Rosas, 25, is suspected of having been impaired by alcohol, according to a California Highway Patrol report provided Tuesday to The Washington Post. He was booked into Butte County Jail on charges of misdemeanor hit and run and driving on suspended license, and was subsequently released with no bail (per the New York Daily News).

“We are aware of the situation and have been in contact with Aldrick,” the Giants said in a statement. “We have no further comment at this time.”

A spokesman for the NFL told The Post that the league declined to comment.

The incident occurred Monday at approximately 8:25 a.m. in Chico, Calif. According to the CHP report, witnesses said they saw a black Chevrolet SUV passing traffic by swerving into the oncoming lane while traveling at an estimated 100 mph.

The vehicle failed to stop at a red light and struck a Ford pickup truck that was in an intersection in what was described as a “T-bone” collision.

While the Ford was immediately disabled, the Chevrolet drove a little further before coming to a stop. The driver of the Chevrolet then “fled the scene on foot,” per the report, while wearing a blue shirt, blue shorts, and no shoes.

After failing to locate the driver at a residence that corresponded to the Chevrolet’s registration, a pair of CHP officers were heading back to the crash site to collect evidence when they spotted a male who matched the driver’s description.

The officers “contacted the male and observed his hands, legs, and bare feet were covered in blood,” stated the report, which added, “The male identified himself as Aldrick Rosas, the registered owner of the Chevrolet SUV.”

After going to a hospital for a medical check, Rosas was booked into jail. A representative of the CHP did not immediately reply to an inquiry about the condition of the driver of the Ford.

Rosas was previously charged with DUI in 2016, according to NJ Advance Media, which reported that the charge was dismissed but that he pleaded guilty to driving with a blood alcohol level of over .08 percent. That incident, for which Rosas was reportedly given 30 months’ probation, occurred in his hometown of Orland, Calif., located approximately 20 miles west of Chico.

The Giants “were aware of a prior arrest prior to him joining [the team],” a person described as familiar with the situation told NJ Advance Media.

After playing at NAIA-level Southern Oregon University, Rosas went undrafted in 2016 before being signed by the Tennessee Titans. He was released before the 2016 season but Rosas beat out Mike Nugent for the Giants’ kicking job the following summer and had a solid NFL debut, making 18 of 25 field goal attempts, including three of three from 50 yards or longer.

Rosas made the Pro Bowl after a 2018 campaign in which he made 32 of 33 field goals, but he dipped to 12 makes in 17 attempts last season. In May, the Giants placed a second-round tender on Rosas, worth approximately $3.3 million in salary for 2020 if he remains on the team’s roster.

“He has some major issues that need addressed, and I hope he gets help,” a former agent for Rosas, Derrick Fox, said of the kicker to the Chico Enterprise-Record. Fox said he represented Rosas through his time with the Giants until their working relationship was recently severed.

Another player for the Giants, cornerback Deandre Baker, pleaded not guilty in May to four counts of aggravated assault with a firearm and four counts of armed robbery, in connection with an alleged incident earlier that month. Baker has been told by the team, per reports, to stay away from its virtual offseason until his legal situation attains more clarity.

The first court date for Rosas is reportedly scheduled for Sept. 4. That’s 10 days before the Giants’ scheduled season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

New York Giants kicker Aldrick Rosas was arrested Monday morning following a hit-and-run in Chico, California, the California Highway Patrol confirmed to NFL.com.

According to a collision report, Rosas was driving in his black 2018 Chevrolet SUV in Chico at an estimated speed of 100 mph when he collided with a Ford pick-up truck in an intersection. Rosas attempted to flee the scene, but was soon located by a CHP officer. Rosas then identified himself as the registered owner of the Chevy SUV, was arrested and transported to Enloe Medical Center.

Rosas was booked into the Butte County Jail and charged with misdemeanor hit-and-run and driving on a suspended license.

Alcohol impairment is believed to a factor in the collision, as well, according to the report.

The Giants said in a statement, “We are aware of the situation and have been in contact with Aldrick. We have no further comment at this time.”

Rosas has been the Giants’ kicker for the past three seasons, playing in all 48 games. Over that span of time, Rosas has made 62 of 75 field goals (82.7%) and 86 of 94 extra points (91.5%). Rosas made the Pro Bowl in 2018 after connecting on 97% of his field goals and missing just two kicks (one FG, XP each) all season.

The 25-year-old was tendered at the second-round level in March and is slated to make $3.26 million on his one-year deal.

An investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol is underway of a former Tech football player charged with a DUI and a fatal hit-and-run on Jan. 25 in Horry County, South Carolina.

Riley Patton, 23, was driving east on Highway 544 near Cabots Creek Drive around 1 a.m. when he ran into the center median and struck a parked truck on the median and the pedestrian outside the vehicle.

A Horry County coroner identified the pedestrian as Timothy Shulkcum, 55, and officials pronounced him dead at the scene.

Highway patrol officers stopped Patton as he fled the scene to Peachtree Grocery and placed him into custody and booked at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center of North Myrtle Beach.

A Horry County judge set the bond at $200,000. Patton posted bail and was released on Jan. 28.

Patton played for Tech as a long snapper for three years. He started 30-plus games in his career and snapped every ball in varsity play in his final two seasons, according to Tennessee Tech player information.

Patton is a student at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina, and was a member of the football team. Patton is no longer allowed to play.

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) — An investigation is underway after a former Tennessee Tech football player was arrested on charges of driving under the influence in a deadly hit-and-run in South Carolina Saturday.

23-year-old Riley Patton is charged with felony DUI resulting in death and leaving the scene of an accident involving death after officials say he struck a truck and pedestrian around 1:00 a.m off Hwy 544 and Cabots Creek Drive near Myrtle Beach.

According to Max Preps, Patton played long snapper, center, and defensive tackle at Halls High School. He graduated in 2015.

SCHP says Patton was driving his 2002 GMC truck eastbound on 544 when he ran into the center median, hitting a 2001 Ford truck in that lane and a pedestrian near the Ford truck.

The Horry County Coroner’s Office says 55-year-old Timothy “Timmy” Shulkcum of Myrtle Beach was hit by the GMC truck and pronounced dead at the scene.

Corporal Sonny Collins with the South Carolina Highway Patrol says Patton continued driving after the incident before being apprehended at a nearby grocery store.

A spokesperson with Coastal Carolina University confirms Patton is currently enrolled as a student. Patton was listed as a long snapper on the 2019 Coastal Carolina Football roster, but the walk-on graduate transfer played no snaps as a Chanticleer. CCU says Patton no longer has eligibility.

“Riley Patton is a student at Coastal Carolina and was a member of the football team in the fall semester and no longer has eligibility,” a spokesman said in a text to WMBF News. “Thus he is no longer a member of the football team.”

At an initial bond hearing in Conway Saturday, a Horry County judge set Patton’s bond at $200,000 for the hit-and-run and DUI charges. Patton is also required to wear a location monitoring system.

The Knoxville, Tennessee native spent the first four years of his college career at Tennessee Tech.

SCHP says the investigation is ongoing.

WMBF News will continue to update this developing story as more information is made available.
