MIAMI – Miami police detectives said Monday that Jose Trimaine Jose, a 6-foot-3 former University of Central Florida player, was killed in a Friday afternoon shooting in Wynwood.

Jose Jose played football for Miami Central and Booker T. Washington high schools in Miami-Dade County and for the University of Central Florida in Orange County.

Jose also played high school football for Booker T. Washington and Miami Central. His aunt Janice Ricketts said the 28-year-old father left behind three children.

“He was an awesome dad because he took responsibility,” Ricketts said. “He was taking care of his kids. He loved his mom. He took care of his mom … He was the sweetest person.”

Jose Jose was a father of three in Miami-Dade County, relatives said.

After Jose was fatally shot in the torso, near the intersection of Northwest 20th Street and North Miami Avenue, there was a massive manhunt in an area of Miami’s Wynwood-Overtown boundary.

According to Officer Kiara Delva, a spokeswoman for the Miami Police Department, officers arrested Lynwood Walker III, for his role in the shooting. Walker, 27, had fled to another state, but detectives caught up to him and are bringing him back to Miami-Dade County, Delva said.

Walker, who has a “Death Before Dishonor” tattoo on his forehead and is known as local rapper Tankhead666, had a pending domestic violence case in Miami-Dade County court. He was arrested Nov. 25 for battery by strangulation, false imprisonment and assault.

Prosecutors haven’t filed charges against Walker in the Wynwood shooting.

Jose also had a criminal record. In 2010, the talented offensive guard had a promising future with a long list of scholarship offers that included the University of Miami. Jose signed with UCF. Records show he lost his way.

When Jose was arrested on aggravated assault and concealed weapons charges in 2010 in Miami-Dade County, the Key Knights football recruit was released from the scholarship. Jose worked hard to redeem himself as a cornerback and defensive tackle before his UCF coach dismissed him over disciplinary issues.

Jose appeared in nine games during his UCF sophomore season in 2011 and eight games during his junior season in 2012 before leaving the team.

Jose faced marijuana-related charges in Orange and Miami-Dade counties in 2016 and 2017. He had become known in the local rap scene as Fat Papi Escobar, and that same year, he released his IgNaRich album.

A witness at Kush, a popular gastropub in Wynwood, said he heard a loud argument that escalated into a shooting on Friday. After the shooting, witnesses told police officers there were two men bleeding on the ground. Miami Fire Rescue took them to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center where doctors pronounced Jose dead.

Detectives haven’t identified the other victim of the shooting. They are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.

A Halls Chophouse employee fired a handgun into the air during Saturday night protests in downtown Charleston when one of the patrons, a former Clemson and professional football player, was injured in an altercation with members of the crowd.

The popular King Street restaurant was not spared from damage during the demonstration Saturday evening. Earlier in the day, hundreds of demonstrators marched through Charleston in peaceful protest to honor George Floyd, an African American man who died at the hands of police in Minnesota. By sundown, buildings caught on fire, windows were smashed and tensions escalated throughout the Holy City.

Jim Stuckey, a Clemson All-American and defensive tackle for the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Jets in the 1980s, was a patron at the restaurant on Saturday evening and was injured. The altercations in front of Hall’s Chophouse quickly spread on social media and three videos shared with The Post and Courier and half a dozen eyewitness statements have helped answer questions as to what occurred.

As crowds began to form, an employee with the restaurant stepped outside, pointed a firearm and told protesters to back away from the establishment, an eyewitness who filmed the incident told the newspaper. Some members of the crowd began throwing things at the steakhouse after being shown the weapon.

Stuckey was already present in front of the restaurant with a golf club and was getting into a verbal altercation with some of the protesters. A Post and Courier reporter on the scene photographed and witnessed the former athlete holding the iron and a cigar while interacting with the crowd.

An eyewitness that filmed the interactions said Stuckey was then attacked by several people after shouting at the crowd and was knocked to the ground. Around 9:56 p.m., the Halls’ employee then came back outside and fired at least four shots into the air according to videos shared with the newspaper and heard by a reporter on scene.

“Shots were fired during the height of the violence outside of our restaurant around the time a window at Halls was being broken,” a statement from the restaurant said. “In an effort to protect customers and staff, a Halls’ team member drew his licensed concealed firearm and discharged it into the air while other members of the Halls team brought an injured guest inside the restaurant.”

The restaurant added that “no one was injured by the gunfire, but a Halls’ guest was injured in front of the restaurant.” The steakhouse said in a statement that they are cooperating with authorities and will conduct an internal investigation.

Additionally, the restaurant said that certain staff members are trained and licensed to carry concealed weapons.

Windows were broken and some damage happened from an object being thrown through the glass, the restaurant confirmed. There was no looting on the premises.

Stuckey, when reached by phone on Sunday, did not want to elaborate on the event or the extent of his injuries and added that he was not pressing charges against any individuals.

On Sunday, the restaurant posted a statement on Facebook that read: “We will remain closed tonight. We love our city and its people. We will not let violence win the fight over the need for justice and equality.”

The post had a wide-range of criticism and praise in the comments.

“I hope the employee that was standing out of your door and shooting into street becomes a clear indication to the rest of Charleston about the way your restaurant disregards life,” one account wrote.

Another commenter said, “Thankfully your employee was armed and took action. I hope he is recognized and not reprimanded!”

Bill Hall, the founder and owner of the restaurant, would not answer questions about the incident when asked at his restaurant Sunday. He did issue a statement through a spokeswoman.

“Charleston is a city which has gracefully weathered the toughest storms, including the unthinkable tragedy at Mother Emanuel,” his statement said. “I support the efforts and message of our peaceful protesters. I do not believe they are the individuals who have caused chaos in our city. We are cooperating with authorities as they investigate all that has taken place on King Street.”

Police Chief Luther Reynolds said 10 people were charged after the protests overnight and more arrests are anticipated. He said he suspects the vandals causing property damage downtown were from outside Charleston, but he didn’t immediately have data to back that up. He said no one was seriously injured in the episode, but four firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation.

The City of Charleston enacted an earlier curfew for Sunday evening and requested the assistance of the South Carolina National Guard to keep order. Officials hope the new curfew, which will run from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., will help curb vandalism and public damage.

DES MOINES, Iowa –A Drake University men’s basketball player has been charged after police say he lied about a shooting incident that injured another student.

Twenty-two-year-old Tremell Murphy has been charged with making a false report to law enforcement and is also accused of violating a city of Des Moines ordinance prohibiting the discharge of a firearm within the city limits.

According to Des Moines Police, officers were called to 1151 27th Street on August 31st just after 11:00 p.m. on a report of an injured person. Witnesses told police 19-year-old Nate Miller had fallen and struck his head. He suffered serious injuries.

Officers noticed a bullet hole in the wall near Miller and determined the adjacent bedroom belonged to Murphy. He told police he had a .22 caliber pistol in the dresser of his room but insisted Miller had been injured in a fall. Police recovered a spent shell casing in Murphy’s room.

Doctors determined the injury to Miller had been caused by a gunshot.

Police say during their investigation, Murphy admitted he had been handling the gun in his room when it accidentally discharged. He also admitted to withholding information about the shooting from police.

Drake University issued a statement following Murphy’s arrest:

“Shortly before midnight on Saturday, Aug. 31, a Drake University student was accidentally shot by a fellow student at an off-campus house. Drake University is conducting a full internal review with the procedures set forth in the University’s Code of Student Conduct. The University is committed to the safety and security of our entire community.

‘This is a sad and difficult time for the Drake community,’ said Jerry Parker, dean of students. ‘Our thoughts are first and foremost with the injured student and his family, and with the hope of a full recovery. The injury is serious but not life-threatening, and, gratefully, no one else was hurt. The University will continue providing support to all of those affected by the incident, while we complete the internal review.’

Per Drake University’s Code of Student Conduct, when a student is the subject of a criminal investigation and/or criminal charges have been issued, interim measures can be taken by the dean of students, to include an interim administrative leave, which impacts a student’s ability to participate in academic and co-curricular programs while the criminal process is ongoing.

Tremell Murphy, who is facing charges, is a senior at Drake. He has been a student-athlete in good standing and a member of the men’s basketball team. Murphy was removed immediately from team activities.

Drake University would like to thank the Des Moines Police Department and the City of Des Moines’ emergency medical services for their responsiveness and concern. Under obligation of the law and to protect the privacy of the students involved and the integrity of the review process, the University is not able to provide further comment at this time.”

CONCORD, NH — An elderly driver from North Conway was injured and taken to the hospital crashing at a tollbooth in Rochester Thursday. The driver, 65, was in a Subaru Impreza driving north on Route 16 when, according to New Hampshire State Police, he attempted to change lanes, drove into a concrete barrier, and went airborne at just after 1 p.m. After that, the Subaru struck a 2019 Chevrolet van being driven by a woman from Barrington.

The Subaru rested on its side and the driver was taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital by Rochester EMTs. State police did not report whether or not the woman was injured during the incident.

State police were assisted at the scene by Rochester firefighters and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation.

The cause of this crash remains under investigation, according to Lt. John Hennessey of Troop A. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Trooper Daniel Peete, New Hampshire State Police, Troop-A, at 603-223-8490 or Daniel.Peete@dos.nh.gov.

More Commercial Vehicles Stopped

On Tuesday, state troopers were in Ossipee conducting commercial motor vehicle enforcement when they stopped a 2018 Chevrolet box truck on Route 25, reportedly without a U.S. Department Transportation number. The vehicle was pulled over and inspected. The driver, Juan Yupangui, 39, of Ecuador, “did not possess a valid driver’s license, his driving privileges were suspended, was unable to communicate in English as required of commercial motor vehicle operators, and was not medically qualified to drive the vehicle,” according to Lt. Andrew Player of Troop G. Four individuals were also found in the cargo area of the vehicle and not wearing seatbelts as required, according to a report.

An inspection of the truck reportedly found numerous infractions including worn tires, cords that were exposed, and tires that were contacted each other on a rear axle, and the anti-lock braking system was not functioning properly.

Yupangui was charged with operating after suspension.

During the investigation, the owner of the company, Juan Quizhpi, 26, of Haverhill, Massachusetts, arrived in a 2017 F-350 truck. His truck, according to Player, also failed to display the company name and US DOT information. The vehicle also did not have proof of inspection, didn’t have a fire extinguisher, and the company failed to correct issues cited in a previous motor vehicle inspection, state police reported. Quizhpi was also accused of not having possession of a medical certificate. He was cited to appear in court in February.

During the investigations, a third contractor arrived at the site. Andrew Averill, 48, of Hollis, Maine, was driving a 2018 GMC Sierra that also was not properly marked and was not inspected, according to Player. Averill, state police said, also didn’t possess his medical certification — something he was previously cited for. He was given a summons and is also due in court in February.

Man Accused Of Submitting False ID

A Nashua man was arrested on tampering with public and private records and driver’s license prohibition after an incident at the Nashua Division of Motor Vehicles Monday.

State police were called to the DMV to investigate a man who appeared to have a fraudulent driver’s license. State police were eventually able to identify the driver as Julio Garcia Diaz, 35, of Nashua. State troopers accused him of presenting an application for a driver’s license along with a Puerto Rican driver’s license to clerks.

“Both displayed indicators of potential fraud,” according to Player.

As they furthered the investigation, troopers learned that Diaz “had not held a valid license since 2010 and that the license presented was fraudulent.”

Diaz was arrested and is due in court on March 4.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Trooper First Class Aaron Richards at 603-223-8778 or by email at Aaron.Richards@dos.nh.gov.
