Former NBA player Stephen Jackson, who was lifelong friends with George Floyd, said on TODAY Thursday that he welcomed the news that three more former Minneapolis police officers were charged in Floyd’s death.

“We should’ve been seeing those mugshots,” Jackson told TODAY’s Craig Melvin, adding that he believed that there was a double standard in play.

“Why didn’t we see any public arrests? Why didn’t they have to do that walk of shame like we have to do that walk of shame for traffic tickets or unpaid child support?” Jackson asked.

“They come with a SWAT team and kick our doors down and drag us out the house. We’ve seen a public murder, but we didn’t see a public arrest. I’m not surprised. I want convictions and I’m not gonna be satisfied until they’re buried under the jail.”

The three former officers, Tou Thao, Thomas Lane and J. Alexander Kueng, were charged Wednesday with aiding and abetting murder in Floyd’s death on May 25.

The murder charge against the fourth, Derek Chauvin, who was filmed pressing his knee into Floyd’s neck for nearly 9 minutes as Floyd lay on the ground, was also elevated to second-degree, from third-degree.

All four officers were fired on May 26 after cell phone video showing Floyd’s arrest went viral.

Jackson, a former NBA player, said he believed the national and global protests over Floyd’s death proved there are many people who back the cause for equality.

“If we stand arm to arm, side by side, shoulder to shoulder with every race, we can’t lose and that’s what you’re seeing,” he said. “That’s why you’re seeing all 50 states protesting my brother. That’s why you see all these countries protesting for my brother because everybody wants to love everybody and everybody wants to stand together, and we know what’s right and that’s what we’re fighting for.”

Jackson also called out New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees for his comments Wednesday that he disagreed with anyone “disrespecting” the American flag by kneeling during the national anthem.

“I hope he apologizes,” he said. “Drew Brees is a smart guy and the timing is definitely bad. He has a lot of black teammates. He knows what’s going on. He’s seen my brother get murdered. The world’s seen my brother get murdered. So, to be that naïve, and he’s a smart guy, but to be that naïve and act like you don’t know why (Colin) Kaepernick was kneeling, it just baffles me.”

Brees issued an apology for his remarks Thursday morning on Instagram.

Jackson also addressed the moment Floyd’s young daughter Gianna remarked, “Daddy changed the world,” while they were walking in Minneapolis earlier this week, a moment that went viral across social media.

“I didn’t teach her that,” he told TODAY, adding that the moment came after the 6-year-old saw pictures of her dad everywhere while he carried her on his shoulders amid the demonstrations.

“And she’s like, ‘My daddy’s everywhere.’ I said, ‘Yeah, your daddy changed the world.’ And she just screamed it. ‘My daddy changed the world.’ And it’s a blessing, because it is going to change the world,” he said.

Former NBA player Stephen Jackson says he’ll use his platform and “everything I have to get a conviction” for the four Minneapolis police officers who were fired after George Floyd’s death.

Jackson, like Floyd, is from Houston and they were friends. The handcuffed black man died after pleading for air as a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck.

That officer, Derek Chauvin, was arrested Friday and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter. The charges were announced shortly after Jackson spoke at a news conference organized by activists at Minneapolis City Hall. Actor Jamie Foxx and Minnesota Timberwolves star Karl-Anthony Towns were among those in attendance.

Towns, the city’s franchise star, stood near Jackson wearing a “Black Lives Matter” hat and a black and white mask. It was a display of tremendous commitment for Towns considering his mother, Jacqueline, died from the coronavirus on April 13.

Other players, including Timberwolves’ Josh Okogie, were in attendance as well.

“We need each other now more than ever,” Okogie wrote on Instagram. “I am immensely disgusted in the amount of pain and suffering that my fellow black brothers and sisters have to endure until change happens. We can no longer be alienated and we can no longer normalize the injustices that this system of oppression feeds us. No more lives need to be lost.”

Floyd could be heard repeatedly saying “I can’t breathe” in the video. Chauvin had his knee on Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes, 46 seconds, including nearly three minutes after Floyd stopped moving and talking, according to the criminal complaint.

The incident sparked outrage among the NBA community.

“I don’t have no more tears honestly,” Jackson said. “I’ve cried enough. I’ve cried enough. I’m here for one reason. For my brother’s honor.”

Former NBA player Stephen Jackson spoke at a rally Friday afternoon in Minneapolis in remembrance of his friend George Floyd, a handcuffed black man who died in police custody after pleading that he could not breathe.

“I’m here because they’re not gonna demean the character of George Floyd, my twin,” Jackson told supporters. “A lot of times, when police do things they know that’s wrong, the first thing they try to do is cover it up, and bring up their background — to make it seem like the bulls— that they did, was worthy. When was murder ever worthy? But if it’s a black man, it’s approved.

“You can’t tell me, when that man has his knee on my brother’s neck — taking his life away, with his hand in his pocket — that that smirk on his face didn’t say, ‘I’m protected.’ You can’t tell me that he didn’t feel that it was his duty to murder my brother, and that he knew he was gonna get away with it. You can’t tell me that wasn’t the look on his face.”

Jackson, a 14-year NBA veteran who became friends with Floyd while growing up in Texas, spoke along with actor Jamie Foxx and others at the rally, which was held at the Minneapolis City Hall Rotunda and also attended by Timberwolves players Karl-Anthony Towns and Josh Okogie.

Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who was seen on video kneeling on the neck of Floyd, was arrested Friday and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said.

The other three officers at the scene have also been fired.

Freeman did not have immediate details, but said a criminal complaint would be made available later. The charges come after three days of protests, which had been escalating in violence.

As protests continue in Minneapolis, outrage has been heard from across the United States following the death of the 46-year-old Floyd on Monday.

“We can’t love forever and the hate is coming out and I’m afraid,” Jackson said during the rally. “I’m honestly afraid because I know what comes from hate, from us, and I know why y’all are so scared. Because y’all are scared that we’re going to pull a you on you. I know why y’all are scared. Y’all have been doing us wrong for so long, y’all think karma’s going to hit you right back.

“But we’re going to do this s— right and it ain’t gonna stop. I don’t have no more tears honestly. I’ve cried enough. I’ve cried enough. I’m here for one reason. For my brother’s honor.”

Jackson has shared a number of social media posts defending him since his death. He appeared at the rally in a black hoodie with the words: “RIP GEORGE FLOYD 3rd Ward, TX.”

“He was murdered in broad daylight for the world to see,” Jackson said. “… So where do we go from here? We’re going to the front line and anything you see, so be it, so be it, so be it. I want you to see it because this is real pain. How can you tell people to stop doing what they’re doing when all you have to do is have common sense? Common sense ain’t common.

“Common sense is not common. I walk right here and smack this man right behind his camera and common sense will say we all saw him slap him. Am I right? Everybody in here will say we saw him slap him. Everybody saw it. So everybody didn’t see that this man killed my brother? Common sense ain’t common. It’s a new day.”

Ulster and Ireland rugby players Paddy Jackson and Stuart Olding have  been found not guilty of raping a female student at a house party two years ago, with Jackson also being found not guilty of sexual assault.

Two other defendants in the same case have also been found not guilty on all charges.

Blane McIlroy has been found not guilty of exposure, and Rory Harrison has been found not guilty of withholding information and perverting the course of justice.

The jury, made up of eight men and three women, deliberated the verdict for three hours and 45 minutes before returning unanimous not guilty verdicts to all charges.

Jackson, 26, from Belfast and Ulster teammate Olding, 25, also from Belfast, denied raping the same woman – then 19 years of age – following a night out in June 2016. Jackson, a 25-time capped Ireland international, also denied a further charge of sexual assault.

McIlroy, 26, from Belfast, denied exposure while Harrison, 25, from the same city, denied perverting the course of justice and withholding information.

The families of all four men were in the public gallery to hear the jury foreman read out the not guilty verdicts to each charge individually.

The nine-week case that began in January saw the defence argue that the woman made a false allegation of rape because she regretted consenting to group sex and feared that she may have been filmed with the images then potentially ending up being posted on social media.

The prosecution case was that Jackson allegedly pushed the woman down on his bed and vaginally raped and digitally penetrated her, before Olding allegedly walked into the room where the woman was forced to perform a sex act on him. It was alleged that McIlroy then entered the room, naked and holding his penis, with the woman then running out of the room.

The prosecution also alleged that Harrison “tried to cover up or manage” the woman, and took her home in a taxi.

A lawyer for the Public Prosecution Service told the trial that Jackson had “not sought her consent and indeed used force to achieve his aim”, and that Olding entered the bedroom while the complainant was being raped and joined in.

In the hours after the alleged incident, the woman attended a sexual health clinic and a sexual assault referral centre before making her first statement to the police the following day.

Under cross-examination, Jackson repeatedly denied he had forced the girl to perform sex acts against her will.

He said the complainant was one of a number of women that returned to his house after meeting the rugby players and their friends in a Belfast nightclub the day after they returned home from Ireland’s tour of South Africa.

Jackson said the woman had followed him to his bedroom on two separate occasions for consensual sexual activity.

Olding said he was “in complete control” of his actions following a day of heavy drinking with Jackson and others, and that he was “100 per cent sure” what had happened had been consensual.

Neither Jackson nor Olding have played for club or country since they were charged last July. Jackson made his Ireland debut in 2013 and was the second-choice fly-half at the time of being charged, while Olding made his international debut in the same year and has four caps to his name, with the most recent coming on the tour of South Africa alongside Jackson.

INDIANAPOLIS — Prosecutors filed felony charges on Wednesday against an immigrant illegally living in the U.S. who is suspected in a drunken driving crash that killed Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson and an Uber driver.

Manuel Orrego-Savala, 37, who is from Guatemala and has twice been deported from the U.S., is charged with causing death while driving intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident. He said little during his initial court hearing, responding through an interpreter as the judge explained the proceedings and charges.

“He’s very distraught to say the least,” said his lawyer, Jorge Torres. “He’s very confused.”

Investigators said Orrego-Savala was driving the pickup truck that hit Jackson and his Uber driver, Jeffrey Monroe, while the men were standing outside Monroe’s car early Sunday along Interstate 70. Court documents allege a blood test conducted at a hospital determined Orrego-Savala had a blood-alcohol level of 0.19 percent, more than double Indiana’s legal limit for driving. Jackson was 26; Monroe was 54.

The two most serious charges each carry a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

Orrego-Savala was deported in 2007 and 2009, and was again living illegally in the U.S. at the time of the crash, according to investigators. He was charged late Tuesday by federal prosecutors with illegal re-entry of a previously deported alien. He faces up to 10 years in prison on that charge, which the U.S. attorney’s office said would be handled after any state charges are resolved.

President Donald Trump drew added attention to the case on Twitter, calling the crash that killed Jackson and Monroe “disgraceful.” The president also prodded Democrats to work with him on illegal immigration and border security.

Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry criticized the comments, saying his office would “vigorously prosecute” the fatal crash case regardless of whether Orrego-Savala was in the country illegally.

“We are disheartened that ghoulish and inappropriate public commentary has politicized this tragedy,” the Democratic prosecutor said in a statement. “Much of such commentary, including tweets by the president, fails to acknowledge that both Edwin Jackson and Jeffrey Monroe lost their lives on Sunday. We will simply seek justice on behalf of the families of those two victims.”

Torres also said that Orrego-Savala’s immigration status has no bearing on the crash case. The attorney noted his client has been living and doing construction work in the Indianapolis area for several years.

A spokesman for Jackson’s family has said his relatives are devastated and planned no response to Trump’s tweets about the crash and the suspect’s immigration status.

“The family is in shock, as you can imagine. This obviously happened so unexpectedly,” Atlanta attorney Daniel Meachum said.

Orrego-Savala had a 2005 conviction for driving under the influence in Redwood City, California. He also has numerous other misdemeanor convictions and arrests in California and Indiana, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Nicole Alberico.

In the 2005 case, he pleaded no contest to two separate drunken driving offenses and was given a brief jail sentence, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said Tuesday.

Orrego-Savala remains jailed in Indianapolis. Federal and county prosecutors spell his name as “Orrego-Zavala” in charging documents, but his attorney said his name is spelled Orrego-Savala, a spelling listed among his aliases in the federal documents.

He appeared Tuesday before a judge who advised him of his rights. Indianapolis television station WRTV reported that Orrego-Savala told the judge through an interpreter: “I wasn’t driving the car. I don’t know why I am here.”

A police news release did not mention the presence of anyone else in the pickup truck.

INDIANAPOLIS —

Prosecutors filed felony charges on Wednesday against an immigrant illegally living in the U.S. who is suspected in a drunken-driving crash that killed Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson and an Uber driver.

Manuel Orrego-Savala, who is from Guatemala and has twice been deported from the U.S., is charged with causing death while driving intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident. The 37-year-old said little during his initial court hearing, responding through an interpreter as the judge explained the proceedings and charges.

“He’s very distraught to say the least,” said his lawyer, Jorge Torres. “He’s very confused.”

Investigators said Orrego-Savala was driving the pickup truck that hit Jackson and his Uber driver, 54-year-old Jeffrey Monroe, while the men were standing outside Monroe’s car early Sunday along Interstate 70. Court documents allege a blood test conducted at a hospital determined Orrego-Savala had a blood-alcohol level of 0.19 percent, more than double Indiana’s legal limit for driving.

The two most serious charges each carry maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

President Donald Trump drew added attention to the case on Twitter, calling the highway collision that killed Jackson and Monroe “disgraceful.” The president also prodded Democrats to work with him on illegal immigration and border security.

Investigators said they believe Orrego-Savala was intoxicated at the time of the Indiana crash.

Orrego-Savala had a 2005 conviction for driving under the influence in Redwood City, California. He also has numerous other misdemeanor convictions and arrests in California and Indiana, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Nicole Alberico.

In the 2005 case, he pleaded no contest to two separate drunken-driving offenses and was given a brief jail sentence, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said Tuesday.
