FAIR LAWN, N.J. —

Former Pahokee High football standout and current New York Giants player Janoris Jenkins make his first public statements Thursday regarding the death of a man last week at his home in New Jersey.

Authorities charged Jenkins’ older brother, William H. Jenkins’ Jr., 34, in the death of 25-year-old music producer  Roosevelt Rene.  Rene  was found dead June 26 at Janoris Jenkins’ house in Fair Lawn, N.J., about 10 miles northwest of Metlife Stadium, the Giants’ home stadium.

Police have charged William Jenkins with aggravated manslaughter.

Rene, who went professionally by the name Trypps Beats,  was a family friend who had been staying at the residence, according to published reports.

“Trypps was a good friend and we were collaborating on music production together,” Janoris Jenkins wrote in a statement on Instagram. “It truly hurts my heart to know he has passed away.”

Jenkins wrote that he was in Florida finishing off a promotional tour at the time of Rene’s death.

“As this is an ongoing incident, I cannot answer questions related to the investigation,” he said. “I am praying for Roosevelt and his family.”

Jenkins has been with the Giants since 2016, signing as a free-agent defensive back after four seasons with the St. Louis Rams.

He was a second-round draft pick of the Rams in 2012.

Jenkins was The Palm Beach Post’s All-Area defensive small-schools player of the year as a senior at Pahokee in 2007. He helped the Blue Devils win two consecutive state football championships.

He played three seasons at the University of Florida before being dismissed following an arrest for marijuana possession.

He finished his college career at the University of North Alabama.

According to published reports,  William Jenkins got into an altercation with Rene that led to Rene’s death.

He was arrested hours later in  Ontario County, N.Y. for an unrelated parole violation.

William Jenkins previously served prison time in New York for drug related offenses, records show. He was released in 2016 after serving five years.

He previously lived in Pahokee, but records show no recent ties to the area.

FAIR LAWN, N.J. — William H. Jenkins, the brother of New York Giants cornerback Janoris Jenkins, has been charged in the death of a man found at the NFL star’s home in New Jersey. The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and Fair Lawn police said Wednesday that William Jenkins is charged with aggravated manslaughter in the death of Roosevelt Rene, 25.

NJ.com reports Rene was a music producer and friend of Janoris Jenkins who was living in the home while the NFL player was in Florida. Neighbors told CBS New York’s Jessica Layton that William Jenkins also lives in the home, about 10 miles north of MetLife Stadium.

William Jenkins was arrested by New York State Police for a parole violation and is currently in custody in Ontario County, New York, the district attorney there tells CBS News. District Attorney James Ritts said earlier Wednesday that William Jenkins was considered a “person of interest” in the death of Rene.

Police officers found the body of Rene — who produced under the name “Trypps Beatz” — Tuesday after receiving a report of “suspicious conditions” at the home, NJ.com reports.

A spokesman for the Giants said Tuesday the team is monitoring the situation but didn’t comment further. A cause of death has not been announced, but NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported earlier on Tuesday that police are investigating a possible strangulation/suffocation.”

William Jenkins has been arrested at least three times in New York drug charges, NJ.com reports, and was on parole for two felony drug convictions at the time of his most recent arrest.

It was unclear whether William Jenkins had an attorney.

Janoris Jenkins played at Florida from 2008-2010 before finishing his college career at North Alabama. He was drafted in the second round by the St. Louis Rams in 2012. He played four seasons with the Rams and the last two seasons with the Giants.

The brother of New York Giants cornerback Janoris Jenkins was arrested Wednesday and charged with aggravated manslaughter after a body was discovered Tuesday at the player’s home in New Jersey. If convicted of the felony charge, William H. Jenkins could receive a sentence of 10 to 30 years in prison.

Jenkins, 34, was reportedly arrested after being detained in Ontario County, N.Y., on an alleged parole violation. He is awaiting likely extradition to New Jersey, where Bergen County authorities had labeled him a “person of interest” in the case.

The body was identified as that of Roosevelt Rene, a 25-year-old music producer who is described as a Jenkins family friend.

Janoris Jenkins, 29, reportedly has been in Florida, where he is from, since Giants minicamp ended earlier this month. It is not clear how Rene, who produced under the name Trypps Beatz, died and an autopsy is pending by the Bergen County Medical Examiner’s office. Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network reported that police are investigating the death at the Fair Lawn, N.J., home as a “possible strangulation/suffocation.”

A worker discovered Rene’s body in the basement, according to TMZ, and Fair Lawn Police Sgt. Brian Metzler told NJ.com that police were summoned at 10:22 a.m. Members of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and Bergen County Sheriff’s Office were also on scene and Metzler added that police had never been called to the home before. No other details about the investigation were given.

A neighbor who identified herself to NJ.com only as Debbie said that Jenkins lives at the home with his brother and the website reported that investigators were combing through a white Lexus sedan with Florida plates and a Land Rover.

Jenkins, who raps under the name Rabbit, has been with the Giants since 2016. He was a second-round pick by the Rams in 2012. ESPN reported that Jenkins’s attorneys were advising him to remain in Florida. The Giants said they were aware of the report and were monitoring the situation.

William Jenkins has been arrested at least seven times previously, according to court records obtained by NJ.com, including in 2002 at the age of 18. Since then, he has spent a total of nearly seven years behind bars, with a 63-month stint that began after a 2011 arrest for possession and sale of a controlled substance.
