ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – New online records show UNM Basketball player, JJ Caldwell, had officially been charged with battery, stemming from an incident in December.

The new year is kicking off with a rocky start for the Lobos Basketball player. The Junior Guard has been suspended from the team indefinitely since December.

Online records show Caldwell was charged with misdemeanor battery in December, but the case was just filed in Metro Court last week. According to the original police report, his ex-girlfriend ran into him at a club in Downtown Albuquerque back in December.

They got into an argument and that’s when she told police he pushed her up against a vehicle. Things got even more violent when the pair made it back to his apartment. The report says Caldwell held her up against the wall, then slapped and choked her.

Tonight, Coach Paul Weir addressed Caldwell’s charge.

“I just found out about it now. It was not anything I was aware of until pretty much game time. I’ll take some time here and kind of process what that means and what that’s all about,” he says.

While Caldwell hasn’t made any public comment, he did tweet yesterday morning, saying the last four years have been awful and he just wants his life back.

In the past month, three of Weir’s players have been suspended, and one of them was even kicked off the team. Earlier this week, Coach Weir said the Lobos didn’t handle winning well.

“I regret that I did not take a more active approach to understand that and know that and reel that in,” he said.

Coach Weir says Caldwell hasn’t been removed from the team.

Meanwhile, APD says the victim also reported a separate domestic violence incident three months earlier. They’re meeting with the District Attorney’s Office next week to determine if felony domestic violence charges will be filed in that case.

Alamogordo District Attorney, John Suggs, who is currently handling the December case, says his office is still investigating.

A former NBA player was arrested Friday night for stealing $100,000 in cash during a Georgia home invasion that left a teenage resident with a broken nose, police said.

James Edward “J.J.” Hickson Jr. — who was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2008 – entered the residence located in Coweta County, through the side door and used a knife to attack the 17-year-old, police said, according to WSB-TV.

A law enforcement official told FOX 5 that “the victim was beat up pretty good.”

Hickson was charged with armed robbery in connection with a home invasion, the station reported. Authorities believe at least two other people were involved, however, as of Friday night Hickson is the only one currently facing charges.

Authorities said the former NBA player’s relationship to the victims was not immediately clear, WSB-TV reported.

The 29-year-old was a standout high school basketball before a successful eight-year NBA career that involved stints with the Cavaliers, Sacramento Kings, Portland Trail Blazers, Denver Nuggets and Washington Wizards, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

J.J. Hickson, a former NBA player who played in the Lebanese Basketball League this past year, was arrested Friday. He is being held without bail in Coweta County Jail in Georgia after being charged with armed robbery.

Authorities said Monday that Hickson stole $100,000 during the violent home invasion, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in Senoia, Georgia. Not only did Hickson allegedly attack a person, but he also is accused of stealing a large sum of money. Hickson is awaiting trial.

After playing at Wheeler High School in Marietta, Georgia, Hickson attended N.C. State. He then played eight seasons in the NBA, bouncing around and playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Sacramento Kings, Portland Trail Blazers, Denver Nuggets and Washington Wizards.

Prior to joining the Champville team in the Lebanese Basketball League last year, Hickson played for the Wizards. He averaged 9.5 points and 6.8 rebounds per game over the course of his NBA career.

Ex-NBA player J.J. Hickson was arrested and charged with armed robbery in Georgia on Friday, according to inmate records from the Coweta County Sheriff’s Department. Hickson was charged with using a knife in the robbery, and is being held without bond in Coweta County Jail.

According to a Sheriff’s spokesperson, two people were “involved” in the attempted robbery, though only Hickson faces charges. They say he stole $100,000 and other items from a home in Senoia after breaking a 17-year-old’s nose upon his entry to the house through a side door. The teenager is reportedly “expected to be okay” after receiving medical treatment.

Hickson, 29, was drafted in the first round by the Cavaliers in 2008. He played for the Kings, Blazers, Nuggets, and Wizards over his eight NBA seasons, and two months ago, he signed with Lebanese club Champville SC.

“The victim was beat up pretty good, and they took some personal items from the residence,” Captain John Kennedy of Coweta County Sheriff’s Office said. “And at that point in time through the help of a canvass we were able to identify a suspect and a suspect vehicle. We were able to identify a suspect from that.”

The report says two men were involved, but Hickson was the only one charged with armed robbery with a knife. He is being held without bond, according to AJC.com, citing jail records. 

Hickson, 29, played 10 seasons in the NBA with five teams. He started his career in Cleveland with the Cavs and was best known for his time playing alongside LeBron James from 2008-10. He last played with the Wizards in 2015-16.
