COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A grand jury indicted two former Ohio State football players on Friday on charges of rape and kidnapping after authorities said they held a woman against her will and raped her earlier this month.

Defensive backs Amir Riep and Jahsen Wint were kicked off the team last week after their Feb. 12 arrest. The indictment was announced by Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien, who said each man faces 33 years in prison and registration as a sex offender if convicted.

Both previously pleaded not guilty to preliminary charges. Their next hearing is March 6. Attorneys for both say their clients are innocent.
Riep spoke with officers without a lawyer and passed a polygraph examination, his lawyer, Dan Sabol, said in a statement Friday.

“In a contest of credibility, Amir has done everything possible to prove his innocence,” Sabol said. “If there is a silver lining to this indictment, it is that he will have the opportunity to prove his innocence in a court of law.”

Sam Shamansky, representing Wint, said his client will take a polygraph under any conditions, including one administered by the FBI or the State Highway Patrol.

“He is ready and eager to defend himself against these false allegations,” Shamansky said Friday afternoon.

The woman told police that on Feb. 4 she started having consensual sex with Riep before Wint came into the room and both forced her into sex.

After several minutes, they stopped and Riep told the woman that she needed to say what happened was “consensual on a video recording while laughing at her,” according to police. Riep then told the woman she needed to shower before he drove her back to her home.

Officials said in court that police have the video recording.

Columbus, OH – Two Ohio State Buckeyes’ football players were kicked off the team Wednesday after they were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly holding a woman down and raping her.

Columbus police said the incident occurred at about 9:45 p.m. on Feb. 4 in the 2000-block of Sawmill Place Blvd. when Ohio State defensive back Amir Riep was having sex with a 19-year-old woman, The Lantern reported.

The affidavit said Riep and the woman were having sex when she changed her mind and moved away from him.

That’s when Riep’s teammate, Ohio State defensive back Jahsen Wint entered the room and asked to join in.

The woman told police that Riep grabbed her by the neck and forced her onto her hands and knees so he could rape her, The Lantern reported.

The affidavit said that after he was finished with her, Riep held the woman down while Wint orally penetrated her by force.

The woman told police that afterwards, as she cried, Riep forced her to film a video and made her say that the sex was consensual, The Lantern reported.

She said Riep laughed at her and then he took her home, according to the affidavit.

Both football players were arrested on Tuesday and charged with first-degree rape and kidnapping, The Lantern reported.

Ohio State Football Head Coach Ryan Day kicked both of the accused players off the team on Wednesday, ESPN reported.

“I am not making any statement on the criminal charges, but it is clear they did not live up to our standards and my expectations,” Day said in a statement on Wednesday. “The athletics department will make sure they both continue to have access to the health and well-being resources available to students and student-athletes. Due to the ongoing criminal investigation, I will not be commenting further.”

They appeared in Franklin County Municipal Court on Thursday for an arraignment, Eleven Warriors reported.

Riep’s bond was set at $100,000 and Wint’s bond was set at $75,000.

Neither football player entered a plea but their attorneys said both would be pleading not guilty at their next court appearance on Feb. 21, Eleven Warriors reported.

Wint’s attorney, Sam Shamansky, said the defensive backs were cooperating fully and had turned themselves in to the police when they became aware of the warrants.

He said Wint had agreed to provide a DNA swab and “completely and honestly answered all questions asked of him,” Eleven Warriors reported.

“I can tell you based on what I know, and based on my client’s alleged involvement, that once this case is fully reviewed, I’m going to submit that there was absolutely no crime committed,” Shamansky told the court. “Most rapists don’t hang around, answer questions and then turn themselves in. The reason that Mr. Wint did all of those things is because he is most certainly not a rapist.”

Wint played in every game of Buckeyes’ 2019 winning season and Riep played in 13 out of 14 games, The Lantern reported.

Both players had one more season of eligibility left when they were dismissed from the team.

Terrell Perriman’s initial court appearance Thursday morning did not produce anything out of the ordinary.

A Rule 16 Discovery Request was made and a new court date of Feb. 18 was set. At that time, Perriman will stand before Judge Chelsea Koch at the Third District Court in West Jordan. Perriman will remain in Salt Lake County Jail on $750,000 bail.

A Rule 16 Discovery Request is a standard motion that defense attorneys file asking prosecutors to give them all of the evidence that they have.

When asked about the Perriman situation on Wednesday afternoon during his National Signing Day press conference, Utes coach Kyle Whittingham balked.

“I made the statement on that, and due to the nature of the nature of the investigation, what’s going on, I’m precluded from saying anything or comment in any way, shape or form,” Whittingham said.

Perriman was immediately suspended from the team last week, but as of Thursday afternoon, he remained on Utah’s official roster.

A statement describing the probable cause for his arrest alleges that he met the girl on Instagram and then the two connected on Snapchat. The teenager told police, according to court documents, that Perriman pressured her to send him nude photos and that he sent her several sexually graphic videos and a picture.

On Jan. 23, the girl said Perriman sent her an Uber ride so she could come to his apartment. Once she was there, charges allege, he trapped her in his room and wouldn’t let her leave. The teen told police she was afraid after she saw that Perriman had a stun gun.

She asked him if she could go, according to court documents, and he said only after she had sexual contact with him. She told him she didn’t want to and that she was only 17 and in high school. Perriman allegedly blocked the door, took her cellphone and covered her mouth while she screamed. She tried to bite him.

The girl said he then pulled his pants down and forced her out of hers and raped her, according to court documents. Perriman then ordered another Uber and sent the teen home, according to the probable cause statement.

Tribune reporter Courtney Tanner contributed to this story.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – A University of Utah football player was arrested Thursday on suspicion of kidnapping, rape and enticing a minor, according to arresting documents.

According to a probable cause statement, the 17-year-old victim reported that she met Terrell Maurice Perriman, 20, on Instagram. She alleges Perriman pressured her to send nude photos to him, and she, in turn, received photos that were “sexually graphic in nature,” the report states.

She reportedly met up with Perriman at his apartment where he confiscated her mobile phone and refused to let her leave, arresting documents state. He then allegedly told her he wouldn’t let her leave until she performed a sexual act on him.

Utah Coach Kyle Whittingham said the university was made aware of the “very serious allegations,” and Perriman was immediately suspended from all team activities.

“Obviously, this does not reflect the values and standards of our program and we will continue to monitor the situation as it moves through the legal process,” Whittingham said.”We are cooperating with the authorities and university personnel and will continue to assist as requested.”

Salt Lake City police held a press conference Thursday afternoon regarding the arrest. During the conference, a spokesperson for the department encouraged any other victims to come forward ensuring that the department has victim advocates on staff and ready to assist.

“Often in these kinds of cases there is not just one victim,” said the representative.

Perriman faces charges of rape, a first-degree felony; kidnapping and enticing a minor by internet or text, both second-degree felonies; and dealing in material harmful to a minor, a misdemeanor. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.

He played in 10 games for the Utes at the wide receiver position. The 2019 season was his redshirt freshman season.

Editor’s note: This report includes descriptions of alleged sexual assault.

Two Ohio State University football players were arrested on rape and kidnapping charges Wednesday after what local police describe as a violent sexual encounter with a woman last week. The men are scheduled to be arraigned on first-degree felony charges Thursday.

Police charged 21-year-olds Amir Riep and Jahsen Wint, both of whom played on the Buckeyes’ Big Ten Championship team this past season.

These allegations are potentially another blemish for one of the nation’s elite college football programs, which routinely produces top NFL draft prospects.

In 2018, former Ohio State head football coach Urban Meyer announced he was retiring after a season that began with a three-game suspension for his handling of allegations of domestic abuse by a member of his coaching staff.

Current head coach Ryan Day announced that he had dismissed Riep and Wint from the football program. “I am not making any statement on the criminal charges,” he said, “but it is clear they did not live up to our standards and my expectations. The athletics department will make sure they both continue to have access to the health and well-being resources available to students and student-athletes. Due to the ongoing criminal investigation, I will not be commenting further.”

According to an affidavit filed by Columbus police detective Joshua Martin, the incident took place around 9:45 p.m. on Feb. 4 at an address roughly nine miles from Ohio State’s campus.

According to the complaint, Riep was with a woman with whom he began to engage in consensual sex. But after an undisclosed amount of time, described in the affidavit as “brief,” the women stated she did not want to continue.

At some point, the complaint says, Wint entered the room and Riep asked the woman if his teammate could join the two.

The criminal complaint alleges Riep grabbed the woman by the neck, forcing her to her hands and knees before raping her. As Riep pinned the woman in place, Wint forced oral sex upon her. The woman was able to temporarily fend off Wint, but he was able to force himself onto her again.

The affidavit continues, that “after several minutes both parties stopped,” but Riep then demanded that the woman make a video recording saying that the encounter was consensual. He then drove her home.

Riep, a cornerback, and Wint, who played safety, were on the Buckeyes team that went undefeated in the Big Ten conference in 2019, winning a third-straight conference championship. The team lost in the college football playoff semifinal to Clemson, 29-23.

According to ESPN, both Riep and Wint are entering into their senior seasons at Ohio State. Riep appeared in 37 Buckeyes games, while Wint played in 35.

In the previous case, Meyer, the former head coach and current assistant athletics director for the university, fired Zach Smith, an assistant coach, in 2018. At the time, reports surfaced that Smith’s ex-wife had been granted a domestic violence protection order against him. While acknowledging at the time he “should have done more” Meyer said he and his staff were unaware of any allegations of domestic abuse by Smith.

As NPR reported, an Ohio State inquiry found Meyer became aware of the domestic abuse allegations as early as 2015.

Another former OSU head coach, Jim Tressel, resigned in 2011 after being engulfed in a scandal involving several players who were accused of receiving improper gifts, selling championship rings or trading other memorabilia for cash and tattoos.

You can read the affidavit for Wint and Riep below.

SALT LAKE CITY — Prosecutors have now filed formal criminal charges against a University of Utah player accused of physically barring a high school student from leaving his apartment and then raping her.

Terrell Maurice Perriman, 20, was charged in 3rd District Court Friday with rape, a first-degree felony, and aggravated kidnapping, a third-degree felony.

A 17-year-old girl told police she met Perriman on Instagram and the two began chatting through texts and Snapchat. On Jan. 23, Perriman sent an Uber to pick her up and take her to his downtown apartment, according to charging documents.

Police say Perriman took the girl into his bedroom, then eventually closed the door and began talking to her about having sexual intercourse with him.

The teen said she did not want to have sex, told Perriman that he was making her uncomfortable and said she wanted to leave, according to the charges.

Perriman took the girl’s cellphone, “then stood in front of the door with his arms crossed and told her that she could not leave” until she had sex with him, the charges state.

The girl told police that Perriman briefly left to talk to a roommate and she tried to leave but Perriman “barred the way.”

“Perriman covered (the girl’s) mouth with his hand and (she) tried to bite him,” the charges state. He then allegedly threw her on the bed “and told her she was not leaving” before undressing her and raping her.

Afterward, Perriman called for an Uber to take her home, police say.

The 17-year-old also told police she saw a Taser in the bedroom and feared he would use it on her.

Prosecutors have requested a $500,000 bail for Perriman, who is being held in the Salt Lake County Jail. “The defendant has no ties to Utah, has been suspended from the University of Utah, has been evicted from his residence and has no means or support to stay in the state, making him a flight risk,” the court documents state.

In 2018, Perriman, of Miami, played in two U. football games on special teams and at wide receiver before he redshirted. He played in 10 games during the 2019 football season.

U. head football coach Kyle Whittingham issued a statement saying Perriman was “suspended from all team activities.”

“Obviously, this does not reflect the values and standards of our program and we will continue to monitor the situation as it moves through the legal process,” he said.

Mark Harlan, the university’s director of athletics, called the allegations “disturbing and difficult to read.”

“We have more than 500 student-athletes who proudly and deservedly represent the University of Utah with character, integrity and kindness and we will not allow the alleged actions of anyone to define who we are and what we are about,” Harlan said. “We will continue to educate our student-athletes on appropriate conduct, decision-making and consent.”

Salt Lake police said in cases like these there are often other victims and encouraged anyone who may have been a victim to call police victim advocates at 801-580-7969.

A University of Utah football player was charged Friday after police say he locked a 17-year-old girl in his apartment and raped her.

Terrell Perriman, a 20-year-old wide receiver for the U., faces a first-degree felony count of rape and a third-degree felony count of aggravated kidnapping. He was arrested Thursday morning and booked into the Salt Lake County jail, where he is being held on $750,000 bail.

Salt Lake City police Detective Greg Wilking said Thursday that police have “some indication” there could be other victims and urged individuals to come forward. “Often in these kinds of cases, there’s not just one victim,” he added. “This is behavior that’s repeated.”

The detective said there was “no indication,” though, that Perriman was “targeting underage girls.” He added: “She just happened to be 17.”

“Obviously, this does not reflect the values and standards of our program and we will continue to monitor the situation as it moves through the legal process,” he said. “We are cooperating with the authorities and university personnel and will continue to assist as requested. Due to the ongoing legal proceedings, we are unable to comment further at this time.”

A three-star recruit out of Miami Central High School, Perriman took a redshirt in 2018, then played in 10 games in 2019, including six on offense. He had two catches for nine yards for the 11-3 Utes. Perriman was expected to compete for a starting or backup role in 2020 as a redshirt sophomore.

The University of Utah requires all students to take online training modules on sexual assault when they enroll. Student-athletes must additionally participate in the training every year. The school’s Athletic Director Mark Harlan issued a statement later Thursday, adding that the U. “will continue to educate our student-athletes on appropriate conduct, decision-making and consent.”
