An NFL player was in custody after allegedly threatening to “kill everybody” in a poker game.

Washington Redskins wide receiver Cody Latimer was arrested in Colorado over the weekend on multiple charges. According to a statement from Douglas County officials, Latimer was charged multiple felonies, including assault in the second degree, illegal discharge of a firearm, prohibited use of a firearm and reckless endangerment.

Cops showed up to a Douglas County home early Saturday morning in response to calls about possible gunshots at the home. According to a TMZ report, the commotion stemmed from an argument surrounding a poker game.

Upon arriving at the home, authorities spoke with homeowner Roderick English, a friend of Latimer. English said that he was hosting a poker game with his girlfriend, Latimer and a few other friends. English said that Latimer and another player got into an argument and the situation escalated quickly.

According to English, there was a physical altercation that was broken up and the poker game ended. English kicked everybody out of his house, but Latimer showed up a half-hour later with a weapon and threatened to “kill everybody.”

Eventually, Latimer fired two rounds. Nobody was injured from the shots, but a scuffle ensued between Latimer and English, resulting in minor injuries to English after allegedly being hit on the head with the gun. Cops arrested Latimer and held him on a $25,000 bond.

Latimer posted the bond and is expected back in court on July 24. His attorney told ESPN in a statement that there is still more to the story.

“There’s an entire back story to this situation that constitutes one of the most highly provocative situations you can imagine. Please withhold judgment until all of the facts of what took place that night are known,” read the statement.

 

 

 

Johannesburg – The granddaughter of a Gauteng MEC attempted suicide months after she was allegedly raped by the son of an Orlando Pirates legend.
The victim’s mother said her daughter had been living with the MEC, who has been vocal about the abuse of women and children, in her home in Sandton, when the alleged rape occurred.

She was only 14 on February 6, 2016 when the man, a 25-year-old goalkeeper of a National First Division club, allegedly raped her.

“It happened just a few houses from where she lived with her grandmother,” the mother said.

Neither the MEC nor the girl’s parents can be named to protect the identity of the 17-year-old matric learner.

The accused, who hails from Nigeria, can also not be named because he has not pleaded to the rape charge.

The mother said she found out about the incident when her daughter’s friend sent her a voice note on February 6, on the second anniversary of the alleged attack.

She said the man, who was apparently dating her daughter’s friend, was with her cousin in the house at the time.

“My daughter was picked up by her friend and they went to the house, where she was raped. They had been drinking alcohol and my daughter threw up.

“She then told the people she was with that she was drunk and could not go home because her grandmother would be angry.

“She asked if she could lie down and was taken to the bedroom. The cousin tried convincing her to have sex with him, but she refused.

“He left and the man (alleged rapist) came into the bedroom and forced himself on her.

“For months, her daughter had been distant and cried a lot,” she said.

“I had a feeling that she may have been raped, but I was not sure. When her friend told me what had happened, the pieces of the puzzle fell into place,” the mother added, with tears welling up.

The man appeared briefly in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. The case was postponed for the sixth time to next month.

According to the charge sheet, which The Star has seen, the man has been charged with a count of rape, and is out on bail of R3000.

The girl’s mother and father, who is the MEC’s son, are facing a counter-charge of common assault, following an altercation in court recently.

A handful of ANC Women’s League Zone 13 members protested outside the court.

“Real men protect women and children,” their placards read, while they chanted slogans denouncing woman abuse.

ANCWL member Deborah Francisco said: “We are tired of the rape of women and children. We are tired of their killings. We are here to support the mother of the child, and to send a strong message to rapists that they have no place in society.

“Celebrities tend to commit crime and think they can get away with it. They must know that they are not above the law,” she added.

A 28-year-old man was shot and killed by a US police officer after a reported hostage situation call last night. At a press conference this afternoon, Wichita police said it was a false call meant to draw SWAT officers to the scene, an act known as “swatting.” It appears to have been linked to an argument over Call of Duty, although police have not confirmed that.

During a press conference today, Wichita deputy police chief Troy Livingston said the caller had reported a hostage situation. In the call, which was partially played at the conference, the caller said his father had been shot in the head and was not breathing, and that he had his family at gunpoint. He also claimed to have doused the house with gasoline.

“I might just light the house on fire, burn the whole thing down,” the caller told the dispatcher.

When police arrived on the scene, a man answered the door and was shot and killed by an officer.

The male was given verbal instructions and complied, said Livingston during the press conference. But according to the department’s statement, he reached towards his waistband, leading an officer to fire. The man was later confirmed to have been unarmed.

The officer in question has been placed on paid administrative leave, the police said, per departmental policy.

It appears that those responsible might have been two Call of Duty players who were competing in a $1.50 (£1.10) money match last night, based on Twitter screencaps shared among the Call of Duty community. After the conclusion of this match, two players on the losing team began arguing. The first player, “Miruhcle,” apparently sent an address to the second, “Baperizer,” essentially egging them on. And the second player apparently sent that address to a third party known for swatting. But it appears that address didn’t belong to either player—it belonged to an unrelated man.

“Swatting” is the act of reporting a fake crime to local police, in the hopes of getting a SWAT team to bust down someone’s door. Police confirmed today that they believe the call to be an act of swatting, and say they will be working to find those responsible alongside federal partners.

Both players in question have since been either suspended or deleted their Twitter accounts. One screen capture of the alleged swatter’s feed is still making the rounds, however.

Wichita police have not released the names of any suspects in the case, but Livingston said that the investigation has some “promising leads.”

Update [31/12 6:00AM GMT]: Los Angeles County Jail services confirmed to local news that 25-year-old Tyler Barriss has been arrested in connection with the swatting incident.
