On Sunday, Smith said to a camera in a video he shared that “one of these little [expletive] white boys didn’t know where he was going and broke my [expletive] window in my truck. Broke my [expletive] — this is a residential area, there wasn’t no stores over here, none of that [expletive] — broke my window.

“I chased him down and whooped his ass,” Smith continued. “So if the footage comes out and y’all see it, I chased him down and whooped his ass. He broke my window.”

Of the more than 2,500 arrests over the weekend related to protests in two dozen U.S. cities, nearly a fifth were in Los Angeles, according to a tally by The Washington Post. That city’s mayor, Eric Garcetti, said Saturday that the National Guard was being deployed there “to maintain peace and safety,” and on Sunday he extended a citywide, overnight curfew.

Smith was spotted in Los Angeles on Saturday riding a bicycle along with former Cleveland Cavaliers teammate LeBron James, who now plays for the Los Angeles Lakers. Another former Cavs teammate, Jordan Clarkson of the Utah Jazz, posted a photo Saturday that appeared to show Smith, wearing a mask, joining him and others in walking with protesters.

Smith posted a photo Saturday, tagged as having been in Hollywood, that showed several protesters atop a burned-out car. He wrote in a caption, “NO JUSTICE! NO PEACE!”

Smith’s remarks Sunday echoed accusations that white extremists have taken advantage of the unrest to engage in acts of violence and destruction.

“I’m upset, enraged, because once again, white people are co-opting a movement that’s built by black folks,” a community organizer in Minneapolis told the Daily Beast.

Smith asserted that what he did to the alleged window-breaker was not a “hate crime.”

“I ain’t got no problem with nobody who ain’t got a problem with me,” the 15-year NBA veteran said. “There’s a problem with the [expletive] system, that’s it. … He didn’t know whose window he broke, and he got his ass whooped.”

Smith, 34, has been a free agent since he was released in July by the Cavaliers, whom he helped win an NBA title in 2016. His comments Sunday came two years to the day after he committed a memorable gaffe while playing for Cleveland in the 2018 Finals.

More than 18 months after a stunning FBI raid on his home and offices, and following four guilty pleas in a sprawling investigation into alleged corruption in City Hall, Councilman José Huizar has been arrested.

Huizar, 51, was arrested without incident by federal officials this morning at his home in Boyle Heights. He is scheduled to make an appearance in U.S. District Court this afternoon.

A federal criminal complaint was filed yesterday and unsealed this morning. The councilman, first elected in 2005 to represent the district that includes downtown, Boyle Heights, and portions of Northeast L.A., is charged with one count of conspiring to violate the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization (also known as RICO) statute.

Federal authorities have detailed a scheme in which Huizar allegedly presided over a criminal enterprise that received more than $1.5 million in exchange for pushing forward certain real estate development projects. In addition to representing the booming downtown area, Huizar was chair of the council’s powerful Planning and Land Use Management Committee.

“This case pulled back the curtain on rampant corruption at City Hall,” United States Attorney Nick Hanna said this morning. “Councilman Huizar violated the public trust to a staggering degree, allegedly soliciting and accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes from multiple sources over many years. Using the power of his office to approve or stall large building projects, Huizar worked through a web of other corrupt city officials, lobbyists, consultants and developers to line his pockets and maintain his hold on Council District 14, which he turned into a money-making criminal enterprise that shaped the development landscape in Los Angeles.”

“This case pulled back the curtain on rampant corruption at City Hall” — U.S. Attorney Nick Hanna

A 116-page court affidavit details Huizar’s role in operating an alleged “pay-to-play” scheme in City Hall. It describes a “CD-14 Enterprise” that was established in 2013 and aimed to enrich members through bribery, extortion and other criminal acts. The affidavit details, among other things, Huizar alleged role in securing more than $800,000 in benefits from the chairman of a Chinese real estate firm seeking to build the tallest building west of the Mississippi River in downtown.

The benefits from the developer allegedly included trips for Huizar to Australia and Las Vegas, and on one occasion putting up the councilman in a luxury villa that costs more than $38,000 a night. Huizar also was allegedly given hundreds of thousands of dollars in casino chips by the developer.

“Mr. Huizar was busy enjoying the fruits of his alleged corruption while his criminal enterprise sold the city to the highest bidder behind the backs of taxpayers,” said Paul Delacourt, the Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles office. “As we continue to investigate this case, we urge residents, business owners, and city employees to come forward with information about bribery and illegal practices in government.”

Huizar is the fifth person to be ensnared in the investigation. On May 27, George Esparza, a former top aide to Huizar, pleaded guilty to conspiring to violate the RICO statute. Court documents described his role in the scheme in which the chairman of the Chinese real estate firm funneled $600,000 to Huizar operatives in exchange for the councilman’s help in securing approvals for the 77-story downtown skyscraper (it has not been built). Court documents indicated that the funds were used to settle a retaliation lawsuit filed by a former Huizar employee with whom the councilman engaged in an extramarital affair. Huizar acknowledged the consensual relationship but denied the retaliation charges.

That followed a May 13 guilty plea from George Chiang, a real estate consultant also allegedly involved in directing payments to Huizar from developers to build projects in Los Angeles. Another real estate player, Justin Jangwoo Kim, has also pleaded guilty.

Additionally, former District 12 Councilman Mitch Englander pleaded guilty to scheming to falsify material facts following an investigation that detailed how he accepted payments—including $15,000 in cash and the services of an escort in Las Vegas—from a businessman seeking to grow his enterprise.

Huizar was a powerful presence in City Hall until FBI agents raided his home and offices in November 2018. Investigators today said that during the search of his home, they found $129,000 in cash in the councilman’s closet.

Huizar is termed out this year, but in 2017, he was laying the groundwork for his wife Richelle to succeed him. Previous court documents have detailed instances in which Huizar operatives allegedly pressured local real estate players to contribute large sums to political action committees supporting her run for the seat.

Richelle Huizar formally launched a campaign for the District 14 seat in September 2018. She dropped out less than two months later, shortly after the raids.

At a morning news conference, Hanna repeatedly stressed that the investigation is “ongoing.” He would identify any potential future targets.

Los Angeles City Councilman Jose Huizar, an ambitious player in city politics for nearly two decades, was arrested Tuesday, making him the most prominent figure to face charges in the federal investigation into corruption at City Hall, according to people with knowledge of the case.

Huizar faces charges arising from allegations he ran a sprawling pay-to-play scheme, in which real estate developers allegedly were shaken down for cash bribes and campaign donations in exchange for Huizar’s help getting high-rise development projects through the city’s arduous approval process.

Along the way, the councilman and his associates are accused of enjoying free plane travel, lavish meals, poker chips and other perks offered up by developers.

Charges against Huizar had long been anticipated.

Los Angeles City Councilman Jose Huizar, an ambitious player in city politics for nearly two decades, was arrested Tuesday, becoming the most prominent figure to face charges in the federal investigation into corruption at City Hall, according to people with knowledge of the case.

Huizar faces charges arising from allegations he ran a sprawling pay-to-play scheme, in which real estate developers allegedly were shaken down for cash bribes and campaign donations in exchange for Huizar’s help getting high-rise development projects through the city’s arduous approval process.

Along the way, the councilman and his associates allegedly enjoyed free plane travel, lavish meals, poker chips and other perks offered up by developers.

Charges against Huizar had long been anticipated.

FBI agents raided his home and offices in 2018, and prosecutors from the U.S. attorney’s office have closed in on Huizar in recent months, methodically charging associates who admitted to taking part in illicit deals involving the councilman. In plea deals they struck with the government, a former aide to Huizar, one of his political fundraisers, and a real estate consultant agreed to cooperate with the investigation into Huizar and others in City Hall.

Huizar, who was taken into custody by federal agents at his Boyle Heights home, is expected to make an initial court appearance Tuesday afternoon. An attorney for Huizar did not immediately comment. U.S Atty. Nick Hanna was expected to announce the specific charges against Huizar at a news conference Tuesday morning.

Council President Nury Martinez said she would immediately seek to remove Huizar from office.

“While today’s announcement on the arrest of Councilmember Huizar is not unexpected, the horrendous and disgusting allegations leveled against him and others have painted a dark cloud over our city government for a long time now,” Martinez said in a statement. “Effective today, I will begin the process of removing him from office, so that the good people of Council District 14 and the City of Los Angeles will be fairly and honorably represented. That is our duty and we must do it.”

Prior to his arrest, prosecutors had not identified Huizar by name, referring to him in the associates’ cases as “Councilmember A.”

But Huizar’s identity was clear in court documents in which prosecutors described a councilman who was heavily involved in the city’s oversight of real estate planning and had a relative running to replace him when he reached his term limit.

Huizar chaired the influential Planning and Land Use Management Committee, and his wife briefly mounted a campaign to replace him before abandoning the idea shortly after the FBI raids.

Richelle Huizar’s short-lived run for her husband’s council seat figures prominently in the government’s case against the councilman, who prosecutors said was intent on getting his wife elected to preserve the clout and access to developers’ cash he had amassed while in office.

The money laundering, extortion and other illicit activities Huizar is accused of deploying to carry out his plan amounted to a criminal enterprise, prosecutors argued in court filings.

Richelle Huizar has not been charged in the case, and it is unclear from court records whether prosecutors believe she participated in her husband’s alleged crimes.

Huizar’s arrest comes nearly three months after one of his colleagues, former City Councilman Mitchell Englander, agreed to plead guilty in a related corruption case centered on envelopes of cash and other bribes provided by a Southern California businessman.

And it comes almost two years after FBI agents searched Huizar’s home and offices, giving the public their first indication that the councilman was under investigation.

After those raids, Huizar was removed from two powerful council committees — one that reviews major real estate projects and another that green lights tax breaks for hotel developers. And in recent weeks, Huizar stopped attending council meetings altogether, amid calls from his colleagues for him to step down.

The arrest represents a dizzying fall for Huizar. Five years ago, he won a resounding election victory, securing his third and final term on the council. At that point, he had widespread support from business leaders, the city’s labor unions and advocates for transportation improvements, such as bicycle lanes.

During that campaign, then-Council President Herb Wesson described Huizar as his best friend on the council. By 2018, Huizar’s wife was viewed as a strong candidate to run for his seat once he was forced to step down at the end of this year due to term limits.

Huizar began pressing donors to give big to a political action committee set up to support her candidacy — activities that later became part of the federal government’s case. But Richelle Huizar abandoned her campaign in the wake of the FBI raids.

In recent months, prosecutors filed a series of cases alleging the councilman received, or attempted to obtain, bribes from three different developers pursuing three different projects in his district.

Political fundraiser Justin Jangwoo Kim pleaded guilty to helping the developer of a 20-story residential tower to arrange a bribe for the councilman. Kim admitted ferrying cash to a Huizar aide, who in turn delivered $200,000 in a box to Huizar, according to details in federal filings.

Prosecutors also struck a plea agreement with real estate consultant George Chiang, who admitted to participating in a separate bribery scheme involving the councilman and developers of a planned hotel tower.

Although the developers were not named, details in federal filings show that the businessmen were seeking to redevelop the site of the Luxe Hotel on Figueroa Street, across from the L.A. Live entertainment complex.

Last month, former Huizar aide George Esparza reached his own plea deal, affirming that a Chinese billionaire provided him and the councilman trips to Las Vegas, casino chips and other bribes.

That same billionaire provided Huizar with $600,000 in financial assistance to help him settle a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by a former aide, according to prosecutors. The settlement allowed Huizar to dispose of a thorny political problem months before he faced reelection in 2015.

Quinnen Williams, a defensive lineman for the Jets who was the third player chosen in last year’s N.F.L. draft, was arrested on a weapons possession charge on Thursday night while trying to board a flight at La Guardia Airport, the authorities said.

He was taken into custody around 9:15 p.m. at the Delta Air Lines check-in counter after he was found to have a Glock 19 pistol, according to the Port Authority police. The gun was discovered in Williams’s checked baggage, the authorities said, and it was unloaded.

The authorities said that Williams, 22, had a permit for the weapon in Alabama, where he was a standout player for the University of Alabama, but he did not have one for New York. The matter has been referred to the Queens district attorney’s office.

Williams’s destination from LaGuardia was not immediately clear. Alex Spiro, a lawyer for Williams, said his client “respects and follows the law.”

“There was allegedly a technical issue with the manner in which the lawfully owned firearm was stored — and we expect the matter to be resolved shortly,” Spiro said on Friday.

The Jets said in a statement: “We have been in contact with Quinnen Williams and are fully aware of the situation. We will have no additional comment as this is a pending legal matter.”

Williams recorded 15 tackles and two and a half sacks in his rookie season. He signed a four-year, $32.5 million contract with the Jets, according to the salary tracking website Spotrac.

Williams is not the only high draft pick of the Jets to get in trouble with the law in recent years. In 2015, the defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson, the No. 13 pick in the 2013 draft, was arrested on charges of resisting arrest and several traffic violations after a car he was driving was clocked at 143 miles per hour in Missouri. There was a 12-year-old in the car, which also contained a fully loaded handgun and smelled of marijuana, a police report said.

Richardson was sentenced in St. Charles County in Missouri to two years of probation and 100 hours of community service after he pleaded guilty to reduced charges stemming from the episode. He was later traded to the Seattle Seahawks and most recently played for the Cleveland Browns.

The former Real Betis coach only arrived at Camp Nou in January but he has struggled to impose himself on a team surrounded by chaos

Quique Setien was just as surprised as everyone else by his appointment as Barcelona coach.

“Not even in my wildest dreams could I have imagined being here,” he confessed at his unveiling as Ernesto Valverde’s successor in January.

“Yesterday, I was walking past cows in my village. Today, I was at Barcelona’s training ground coaching the best players in the world.”

Setien had been out of work since parting company with Real Betis last May, after an underwhelming 2018-19 campaign, and was poised to take charge of an Egyptian club when he received a most unexpected approach from the leaders of La Liga.

“When you’re out of work, waiting for an opportunity, you imagine [receiving an offer from] a team that’s down the bottom, in trouble,” he said. “It’s not normal to take over a team that’s first.”

Nothing at Barca is normal anymore, though. Chaos is now the default setting at Camp Nou.

Since Quique’s arrival just five months ago, there has been a social media scandal, allegations of theft and corruption, mass resignations at board level and a bitter dispute over pay-cuts provoked by the financial crisis caused by the Covid-19 outbreak.

The coach would be forgiven for wondering if he’d erred in swapping the tranquility of Liencres for the anarchy of Barcelona.

Clearly, though, this is the opportunity of a lifetime for a man who has never lifted a major trophy. The only problem is that there’s no guarantee that he’ll win a title in Catalunya.

Barcelona may currently sit top of La Liga but they are just two points ahead of Real Madrid and Setien told reporters ahead of this weekend’s resumption of play, “I think that we have to win every game if we want to be champions.”

Quique Setien Johan Cruyff Barcelona GFX

A perfect record looks a tall order, though, given the cloud of uncertainty already hanging over Camp Nou has darkened during the pandemic.

Also, all games between now and the end of the season will be played behind closed doors, while Barca’s results could even arguably be affected by the fact that teams will now be allowed to use five substitutes in a bid to protect players from the increased injury risks involved in returning to competitive football after such a lengthy lay-off and without a proper pre-season.

Indeed, Quique told the Las Palmas Interinsular Football Federation on YouTube, “I think this will do us more harm than good.

“Many games are resolved in the final minutes and with this rule change rivals will be able to have more fresh players in this phase of the match, when we tend to take advantage of their fatigue.”

That remains to be seen, of course. In theory, bigger clubs such as Barca should benefit enormously from being able to rotate stronger, deeper pools of players during a hectic schedule featuring 11 games in five weeks.

However, this is one of the weakest Barcelona sides of the modern era. Their current Liga tally of 58 points is the Blaugrana’s lowest haul from 27 games since 2007-08, when the wheels were falling off the Frank Rijkaard-led side that had won the Champions League just two years previously.

It was the bold and unexpected decision to hire Pep Guardiola which completely altered the history of the club and Barca are now hoping that an even more unexpected appointment might prompt a similarly spectacular U-turn.

Of course, Setien, an avid chess player, shares the same love of Johan Cruyff’s football philosophy as Guardiola.

The former Atletico and Racing Santander midfielder lined out against the Dutchman’s ‘Dream Team’ during his playing days and it changed his whole view of the game.

“I told Cruyff I’d have given my little finger to have played for his team,” Setien has previously admitted.

“And not just to play at Barcelona but for how they played, because I saw how the players enjoyed themselves.”

After Valverde’s more direct, pragmatic play, Setien immediately restored Barca’s traditional brand of possession football.

During his first game in charge, a 1-0 win over Granada, the Blaugrana completed 1,002 passes – the third-highest tally posted in La Liga since Opta began recording numbers.

However, what we have seen in his 11 games to date (seven wins, three defeats and one draw) is a style more similar to the sterile ‘tiki-taka’ that Guardiola despised than the short, sharp and incisive passing that the Catalan deployed to conquer Europe twice in three years.

Lionel Messi Barcelona GFX

As Messi damningly stated in an interview with Sport, during the break, “I never doubted the squad we have and I have no doubt that we can win all that remains, but not by playing in the way we were playing.

“Now, everyone has their opinion and they are all very respectable. Mine is based on the fact that I was lucky to play in the Champions League every year and I know that it is not possible to win it by playing as we have been playing.”

The hope, therefore, is that Setien has made good use of the time off and come up with a strategy that suits and satisfies Messi, who hasn’t scored a single goal away from home under the 61-year-old.

During his second game in charge, at Valencia, Setien employed a 3-5-2 but it proved a disaster, with Barca slumping to a dismal 2-0 defeat at Mestalla.

The senior players have, thus, proven resistant to any further experimentation with their tried-and-trusted 4-3-3. The net result is that Setien’s Barca is as offensively static and defensively vulnerable as Valverde’s.

The good news, of course, is that Luis Suarez is now fit to return to action, meaning Setien is in a position to field Barca’s ‘MSG’ attacking triumvirate for the first time since taking charge.

Until now, Suarez, Messi and Antoine Griezmann have started alongside one another on just 13 occasions since the latter’s arrival from Atletico Madrid last summer, and not once since losing a Supercopa de Espana game to the Rojiblancos in Valverde’s final game in charge, on January 9.

Suarez’s continued importance to Barca should not be overlooked. He may no longer be force of nature he once was but it is telling that despite playing just twice in 2020, only Messi has racked up more goals and assists than the Uruguayan this season.

Suarez’s return will not magically solve Barca’s problems going forward – this is also the worst season in terms of goals since 2007-08 – because the main issue remains getting the best out of Griezmann, who functions better as a support striker in a two-man attack.

Setien also has to make do with several midfielders who are clearly past their best (Ivan Rakitic, Arturo Vidal and even the great Sergio Busquets) and shore up a defence that is conceding on average 1.19 goals a game – their worst ratio for nine seasons.

In short, Barca have just as many problems on the field right now as they do off it. And it is within this perfect storm that Setien is charged with finding solutions – and fast.

He has a contract until 2022 but it contains a clause that means he could be relieved of his duties after next year’s presidential election. So, in theory, Setien has 12 months to turn things around.

However, were Barca to finish the current campaign without a trophy, a scapegoat would be required to mask the failings of others higher up the food chain at Camp Nou.

Essentially, Setien could find himself back among those cows just as suddenly as he was whipped away from them.
