Former Breakers player Glen Rice Jr has been allowed to leave the country and return to the United States despite facing a serious violence charge.

The 29-year-old American was arrested last November and charged with assault with intent to injure after an incident at an Auckland bar.

Today, the nearly 2m-tall swingman was due to appear again in the Auckland District Court.

However, he was missing, with rumours circulating that Rice had left New Zealand some time ago.

Rice’s lawyer, Peter Tomlinson, confirmed the situation.

He asked Judge Emma Parsons to excuse his client’s attendance for today’s hearing.

So where was Rice? Texas, his lawyer said.

Tomlinson cited the global Covid-19 pandemic as an excuse for the basketballer’s absence and inability to return to New Zealand and face the charge.

The judge pardoned Rice’s absence from today’s hearing, but also noted the unusual situation of continuing his bail without forcing him to comply with its conditions.

Rice, who has played for the Washington Wizards and was a second-round pick in the 2013 NBA draft, had joined the Breakers just 10 days prior to the alleged assault as an injury replacement.

Just a couple of weeks after his arrest, however, Rice was in trouble again after allegedly breaching his bail conditions. It lead to the Breakers tearing up his contract.

During Rice’s first court appearance, Breakers owner Matt Walsh was sitting alongside him and told media afterwards that the club would let the matter “play out” through the justice system.

The case will be back in court again in August, when a date for a judge-alone trial is to be set. Judge Parsons has already excused Rice’s attendance for that hearing.

Rice, who is the son of former NBA star and champion Glen Rice, has earlier pleaded not guilty to the charge.

NEW ORLEANS — A Tulane University football player was arrested Sunday morning for attacking a young woman in East Baton Rouge Parish.

Police say Denisha Coleman, just 70 pounds and 5’1” tall, was punched in the face early Sunday morning by 185-pound Tyler Judson.

The pair were outside of a Waffle House in Zachary. One punch, a witness said, flipped Coleman face-first onto the pavement.

Coleman’s mother, Desiree Coleman, said the two did not know each other, and her daughter didn’t pick a fight. Still, she ended up hospitalized, in intensive care, with horrific injuries. Four days after the punch, both of her eyes are still swollen shut.

“She had multiple facial fractures. She has to have surgery, but it’s not clear what the surgery’s going to be until some of the swelling goes down,” said Desiree Coleman.

Desiree met her daughter at the hospital, where a nurse was able to bring her back to see Denisha.

“I said ‘Don’t worry baby.’ I said ‘Don’t worry about what I see. You’re going to be ok.’ I said, ‘But I just need to step out and talk to the nurse.’ But I needed to get out because it was that horrible,” the mother said.

Judson played in four games as a safety for Tulane University football. He was booked on battery charges two hours after the attack.

Judson later posted bail and was released.

Tulane Athletics wrote in a statement, “As additional information has now become available concerning his arrest earlier this week, Tulane football student-athlete Tyler Judson has been dismissed from the football program after initially being suspended following his arrest. Tulane will continue to hold our student-athletes, coaches and staff to the highest of standards.”

The Colemans want to see him prosecuted. Denisha has undergone CT scans and X-rays, and will likely need surgery for eye fractures and a broken nose.

It will also cost this high school senior her walk across the stage this Friday.

“I just know that my baby was an innocent person that didn’t deserve this,” said Desiree.

An investigation is ongoing.

Former All-Pro running back Chris Johnson has been linked to a murder-for-hire plot that resulted in the deaths of two men in 2016, TMZ Sports reported Thursday.

TMZ said Johnson hasn’t been charged but is suspected of paying “a noted Florida gang member” to kill two men whom he believed shot at him and a friend in 2015.

“There’s no validity to any of these accusations,” a representative for Johnson told TMZ.

In March 2015, Johnson was a passenger in a Jeep traveling in Orlando, Florida, and was shot in the right shoulder in a drive-by shooting. The driver, Johnson’s friend, was shot in the head and died.

At the time, police said they believed the Jeep was targeted. Now, according to the TMZ report, court documents say “intelligence gathered suggested [the shooting] was a gang related murder attempt on Chris Johnson”.

The men suspected in the Orlando incident were shot dead in 2016 – one in January and one in June.

TMZ said that in exchange for killing the suspected shooters, Johnson paid the alleged gang leader, Dominic Bolden, by giving him “funds and an individual” who could help him form a drug trafficking organization.

Johnson, 34, last played in the NFL in 2017.

The Tennessee Titans made Johnson, an East Carolina product, the 24th overall selection in the 2008 NFL Draft. In his second season with the Titans, he led the NFL with 2,006 rushing yards and was named First Team All-Pro.

He spent six seasons in Tennessee, gaining at 1,000 yards each year, but never achieved those numbers again. He signed a free-agent deal with the New York Jets in 2014, gaining 663 yards. He ended his career with the Arizona Cardinals, rushing for 1,023 yards in 19 games over three seasons (2015-17).

Johnson gained 9,651 yards on the ground and scored 55 touchdowns in his career. He added 2,255 receiving yards and nine scores.

FORMER Carlton footballer Adrian Whitehead was offered character evidence by AFL premiership team-mate Peter Dean on Friday as he fought an assault count.

The 2017 Holbrook football club coach was charged by police with assault occasioning actual bodily harm over an early morning incident on September 10.

Police alleged Whitehead elbowed and punched a woman after she tried to intervene in an altercation between her partner and the coach following a ride home on a courtesy bus run by Albury pub Beer Deluxe.

For the past two days, Albury magistrate Rodney Brender has heard evidence about the incident which followed Holbrook football club’s presentation night.

The court heard the woman suffered a bruised black eye and broken tooth.

Police prosecutor Sgt Tanya Bradford said the evidence was that “she copped an elbow to her face from Mr Whitehead while she was pulling on his shirt to stop an altercation between Mr Whitehead and her partner”.

She added as the melee continued the complainant was punched to the face, causing her to fall to the ground.

But Whitehead’s barrister Richard Thomas argued there was an absence of evidence about how the woman sustained her injuries.

He said she could have suffered an accidental blow from her partner, tripped in her high heels or fallen over and suffered blunt force trauma.

The court heard Whitehead had upset bus passengers with his whistling and had been told to shut up.

He also told a vulgar joke with a c-bomb punchline.

Dean was shocked to learn Whitehead had used such a joke, saying “the c-word, that’s disgraceful”.

“I have never seen him disrespect any women,” Dean said.

He described his old team-mate as “a good country fella, similar to myself, and I haven’t found him to be dishonest at all”.

Whitehead had contacted police over the incident after reading a Border Mail story online on September 12 which described a Thurgoona assault that left a woman with damage to her teeth.

He also phoned Holbrook club president David Morton, telling him he had let the club down.

The former Holbrook mayor said he does not read The Border Mail so did not know of the matter until that call.

Agreed to back coach: Holbrook football club president David Morton said Whitehead had been recruited to club to help young players and it was decided to support him following feedback from player witnesses to Thurgoona incident.

He said he contacted club life member Robbie Mackinlay and after the pair spoke to footballers Kade Stagg and Ben Talarico, who were witnesses, they agreed to support Whitehead.

Stagg, Talarico and fellow footballers Lachlan Casey and Coby Ross gave evidence on Friday of being on the courtesy bus and the fracas between Whitehead and the woman’s partner.

They all said they had seen no punches thrown, but their evidence varied on whether the woman fell forwards or backwards to the ground.

All said they had been drinking beer throughout the previous night and into the early hours.

The driver of the Beer Deluxe, who could given evidence to the hearing, declined to provide a statement to police, Sgt Bradford said.

Mr Brender reserved his decision until August.

RA said Stannard and a group of players and team management had been at a fast-food outlet following the dinner for departing coach Andy Friend when the alleged attack occurred.

Two players in the squad, including the side’s regular captain Lewis Holland, and Friend detained the man shortly afterwards and held him until police arrived, RA said.

Police said the incident happened at about 3.10am outside a kebab shop in Coogee, a coastal suburb of Sydney, when he was “punched in the head in an alleged unprovoked assault”.

Stannard was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in the city centre where he was understood to be “in a stable condition with head injuries”.

The suspect had been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The Briton has been bailed on “strict” conditions until an appearance at Waverley Local Court on April 19.

Stannard, who competed for Australia at the 2016 Olympics, was made captain of Australia’s Commonwealth Games side earlier this month after skipper Lewis Holland was ruled out due to a hamstring injury.
