Patriots cornerback Joejuan Williams’ first NFL offseason isn’t off to a great start.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Williams was arrested on Jan. 17 in Nashville. The 22-year-old was charged with speeding, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drugs without a prescription and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The arrest happened at 9:37 p.m. after Williams was stopped on Interstate 40 in Cumberland County for speeding. That’s when the state trooper found the unnamed substance, paraphernalia and prescription drugs inside Williams’ 2016 Land Rover.

Williams, who is from Nashville, went to college at Vanderbilt. He was drafted in the second round, 45th overall, by the Patriots. The 6-foot-3 defensive back was buried on the Patriots’ talented depth chart, appearing in just nine games last season, making five tackles and one pass deflection.

If found guilty, Williams could very well face discipline from the NFL for violating the league’s collectively bargained policy and program covering substances of abuse. Section 2.3 of the policy details the potential punishment.

“Players convicted of or admitting to a violation of law … relating to use, possession, acquisition, sale, or distribution of Substances of Abuse other than alcohol, or conspiring to do so, are subject to appropriate discipline as determined by the Commissioner.

“Absent aggravating circumstances, discipline for a first offense will be a suspension without pay for up to four (4) regular and/or post-season games. If the Commissioner finds that there were aggravating circumstances, including but not limited to felonious conduct or serious injury or death of third parties, and/or if the Player has had prior drug or alcohol- related misconduct, increased discipline may be imposed.”

With the NFL, the punishment can vary. For example, Dallas Cowboys tight end Rico Gathers was suspended one game after being arrested for marijuana possession.

Williams is the second Patriots player to be arrested this month. Julian Edelman was arrested on Jan 11 for misdemeanor vandalism after jumping on the hood of a car and causing damage while out in Beverly Hills. Last summer, Patrick Chung was indicted in New Hampshire on a charge of felony cocaine possession. On Jan. 13, the drug charges were conditionally dismissed.

FRANKLIN, Tenn. — The first court appearance for a Nashville Predators player accused of assaulting his girlfriend at a gas station earlier this month has been postponed to next month.

Franklin police arrested team forward Austin Watson on June 16 and charged him with domestic assault on his girlfriend, with whom he has an infant.

Watson, 26, of Nashville, had initially been set to appear in Williamson County General Sessions court Thursday on the misdemeanor charge. Court records show the hearing is now set for July 24.

As of Thursday, Watson, remained free from jail on $4,500 bond.

According to an arrest warrant, on the evening of the reported offense, a Franklin Police Department officer was flagged down by a witness for a possible domestic situation at the Shell Station on Murfreesboro Road.

The officer soon learned Watson and his girlfriend — with whom he had a child in April — got into an argument in a vehicle at a gas station about her drinking and not being able to attend a wedding.

At the scene, the affidavit continues, Watson admitted to pushing his girlfriend and an officer noticed red marks on the woman’s chest.

If convicted of the misdemeanor, Austin faces up to 11 months and 29 days in jail and up to a $2,500 fine, said Williamson County District Attorney Kim Helper.

A first-round pick in 2010, Watson signed a three-year, $3.3 million contract in July 2017. He had a career-high 14 goals and 19 points this past season as well as eight points in 13 playoff games.

Both the Predators organization and the NHL are aware of the arrest.

“We are still gathering facts and it is not appropriate for us to comment further at this time, but this is a matter that we are taking very seriously and will cooperate fully with the investigation by law enforcement,” the Predators released in a statement several days after Watson’s arrest. “The Nashville Predators have and will continue to stand side by side with AMEND in the fight to end violence against women.”

A Nashville Predators forward who was part of a domestic violence public awareness campaign last year has been charged with domestic assault in Middle Tennessee, authorities confirmed Wednesday.

Austin Watson, 26, of Nashville, was arrested at 7:20 p.m. on Saturday in the 1400 block of Murfreesboro Road in Franklin, according to Franklin Police Department Lt. Charles Warner.

According to an arrest affidavit, just after 7 p.m. that day, a Franklin police officer was flagged down by a witness for a possible domestic situation at the Shell Station on Murfreesboro Road.

When the officer responded, he noticed a vehicle at the station whose passenger was trying to “back away from being shoved away,” the affidavit states. “The passenger said ‘stop’ and was trying to cover her face.”

When the officer made contact with the driver, later identified as Watson, he said that he and his girlfriend, who was the passenger, were having an argument about her drinking and not being able to attend a wedding, the officer wrote in the affidavit.

At the scene, the affidavit continues, Watson admitted to pushing his girlfriend and the officer said he noticed red marks on her chest.

Watson was arrested and as of Wednesday he was free on $4,500 bond. He is due in Williamson County General Sessions court the afternoon of June 28 to face the charge.

Williamson County District Attorney Kim Helper said if Austin is convicted of the misdemeanor he faces up to 11 months and 29 days in  jail and up to a $2,500 fine.

Nashville Predators respond to arrest

Records show Watson and his former wife, Karly Marie Stothart, divorced in December 2016.

According to the Predators organization, Watson and his current girlfriend had a baby in April.

“We are aware of the incident involving Austin Watson on Saturday night.  We are still gathering facts and it is not appropriate for us to comment further at this time, but this is a matter that we are taking very seriously and will cooperate fully with the investigation by law enforcement. The Nashville Predators have and will continue to stand side by side with AMEND in the fight to end violence against women.”

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said the league is also aware of the arrest.

“Austin doesn’t really have Club duties currently,” Daly said. “It will be dealt with in due course and prior to next season.  Our focus currently is on the well being and safety of Austin’s girlfriend, their child and Austin himself. ”

Watson part of domestic violence awareness campaign

In 2017, Watson, former captain Mike Fisher, and defensemen P.K. Subban and Ryan Ellis were part of a public-awareness campaign titled “Unsilence the Violence.”

The effort, part of AMEND — the YWCA’s campaign to end violence against women, was in conjunction with the Nashville Predators Foundation’s $500,000 pledge.

According to AMEND, one in four women will be a victim of domestic violence in her lifetime.

This is a developing story.

A former  Tennessee Tech University football player has been charged with attempted criminal homicide following an alleged altercation with a female in Nashville early Tuesday morning.

The arrest warrant from the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department names Nadir Barnwell as the suspect.

According to the warrant, video footage of the area shows a woman sitting down near a pedestrian bridge while Barnwell was pacing back and forth. Then he ran toward her, grabbed her by the throat and threw her on the ground.

Barnwell didn’t call emergency services for medical attention for another 40 minutes, the warrant states.

After police arrived, Barnwell told them the woman was intoxicated and he dropped her while trying to carry her.

The victim had to have surgery to stop bleeding from her brain. She also has a skull fracture and a possible broken arm, according to the warrant.

He was arrested for attempted criminal homicide. His bond is $300,000.

Barnwell is originally from Piscataway, New Jersey. He played football at Rutgers University until he transferred to Tennessee Tech after an alleged street fight over a parking spot.

Wednesday, Tennessee Tech officials stated Barnwell is not listed in the student directory and has not been awarded a degree. His name was listed in last Saturday’s Tech graduation program with a symbol indicated he anticipated graduating at a later date.
