A CMU football player faces six criminal charges, including four felonies, accused of using student accounts to purchase iPhones and having them shipped to two addresses in Detroit.

Kyron McKinnie-Harper, 19 of Detroit, was charged with four felonies and two misdemeanors earlier this week after a warrant was sworn out on him Feb. 13. Those include use of a computer to commit a crime, a seven-year/$5,000 felony; computer-unauthorized access, a five-year/$5,000 felony; larceny by conversion of between $1,000 and $20,000, a five-year/$10,000 felony; computer-fraudulent access, a five-year/$10,000 felony; and two counts of larceny by conversion, a one-year/$2,000 misdemeanor.

He is accused of using the accounts of four other CMU students to purchase $5,599 in iPhones from an on-campus cell phone store and asking that they be shipped to two different addresses in Detroit. CMU police officers later identified one of the addresses as Harper’s home address.

After police were notified of the sales, they reached out to the four students whose accounts were used to make the purchases. All four said they hadn’t made purchases and said they didn’t give McKinnie-Harper permission to use their accounts, according to court records.

One of the four told police that McKinnie used her laptop to work on a project while she was logged in to her student account.

When asked, Harper told police that he didn’t do it, but did receive a message telling him that if he supplied student account login information that he could make money.

Police obtained his phone and searched his phone, according to court records. They found text messages from Harper in which he asked other people to call the store to inquire about the delivery statuses of the phones. They also found photos of login information for three of the students, and text messages that discussed the deal.

The investigating officer wrote that he also found a short video and four photographs of a prepubescent male forced to strip at gunpoint, according to court records. That message was created and sent to his phone on Jan. 16, 2019.

McKinnie-Harper was suspended indefinitely by the head coach Jim McElwain last Friday. He played 12 games as a cornerback last season for the Chippewas, but didn’t travel with the team to the New Mexico Bowl. He was credited with 25 tackles, 10 passes defended and two forced fumbles.

Harper is currently scheduled for a preliminary exam March 5, where Circuit Court Judge Sara Spencer-Noggle will determine whether enough evidence exists to bind the case over for criminal trial.
