A Port Huron High School senior has been charged for allegedly making a threat to shoot students.

Brenna Simpson, 17, was arraigned Thursday on a charge of attempted posting of an unlawful message. When she was arrested, police said she lived in Smiths Creek, but court records show her living in Burtchville Township.

Prosecutor Mike Wendling said the charge is a 1-year attempted felony, which can also carry up to a $2,500 fine.

Simpson was arrested Monday after School Resource Officer Laura Phillips was notified of the threat by school staff, according to a press release from the Port Huron Police Department.

Police said she had threatened to shoot several students over an ongoing disagreement at school.

The police department had said it was requesting she be charged with report of a threat of terrorism, a 20-year felony.

Bond was set at $25,000, with conditions including no contact with victims, no internet use and no access to the high school property.

Simpson has a pre-trial hearing scheduled for 1 p.m. May 7 in front of Judge Cynthia Platzer.

Paul Cassidy, Simpson’s lawyer, declined comment Thursday afternoon.

“The Port Huron Police Department takes threats of school violence very seriously and they are investigating thoroughly,” the police department said in a statement. “The Port Huron Police Department would like to thank the individuals who brought this information forward to school staff and would like to remind everyone, that if you see of hear something, say something.”

Simpson’s threat case is the fourth in the area since the Parkland, Florida, shooting massacre Feb. 14.

A 14-year-old boy is facing charges after allegedly threatening to shoot up Central Middle School. His threat was posted on a professional football player’s Instagram account. The player notified police and the teen was arrested. He remains in the juvenile facility in Macomb County and has a preliminary examination in juvenile court April 19.

A 15-year-old Fort Gratiot boy who allegedly made a false report of a threat at Port Huron Northern High School in March is in his parents’ custody. He has a preliminary hearing scheduled in juvenile court for April 30.

An Anchor Bay student who reported hearing a threat was suspended, but not expelled nor charged.

PORT HURON (WJRT) – (04/04/18) – A school shooting plot in Michigan foiled all thanks to an NFL player who spoke up after someone left an alarming comment on his Instagram account.

Acting on the tip, authorities in Port Huron arrested a 14 year old boy and ended up charging him with making a false report of a threat of terrorism.

The social media account at the center of it all belongs to New England Patriots receiver Julian Edelman.

The photo posted March 25 is unrelated showing Edelman with a teammate amid news of a trade.

Among the 400 comments initially left, one of them contained the threat.

It has since been deleted, but another comment found by ABC12 still reads, “Can’t help but notice a kid saying he’s going to shoot up a school – can everybody alert the authority please? This is not something to joke about!”

One of Edelman’s fans sent him a message about it and the NFL player did take action.

He notified his assistant who found the comment and made a call to Boston police.

They took it one step further getting in touch with the Port Huron Police Department in eastern Michigan.

Authorities tracked down the boy accused of making the comment and according to he reportedly admitted to making the statement singling out Central Middle School as the target.

Police worked closely with the district keeping them informed throughout their investigation.

According to the Port Huron Times Herald, police Captain Joseph Platzer says two rifles belonging to the boy’s grandfather were found in the home.

The teenager remains in the juvenile center in Macomb County.

In a statement from Julian Edelman’s representatives he thanks the person on his social media account for alerting him to the threat saying “This individual’s thoughtfulness and awareness may have helped avert another tragedy.

Edelman says the man who tipped him off is “the real hero”.

A 14-year-old Port Huron boy was arrested after a professional football player was alerted to a comment on his Instagram post.

Port Huron police Capt. Joseph Platzer said police officers from Boston contacted the department March 25.

“So our duty command got contacted by Boston PD regarding a threat made over social media, and it was received by a New England Patriot football player,” he said.

Platzer said officers followed up on the information and located the boy.

“We located the 14-year-old, brought him in and he made admissions to making the statement,” Platzer said.

The boy is charged with false report of a threat of terrorism, a four-year felony. Platzer said he remains in the juvenile center in Macomb County.

He said the boy threatened to shoot up Central Middle School in the comment on the football player’s social media post.

Platzer said the St. Clair County Sheriff Department assisted in the investigation.

“We worked closely with the Port Huron Area School District and we take these threats seriously,” he said.

Platzer said two rifles belonging to the boy’s grandfather were found in the home.

New England Patriots receiver Julian Edelman told the New York Times he was alerted to the comment through a direct message on Instagram.

He told the newspaper he thought of the Feb. 14 Parkland, Florida, massacre that left 17 people dead.

“With the emotions of what happened, and I have a kid now, I said, ‘holy Toledo, what is going on?’” Edelman said in an interview with the New York Times this week.

Edelman told the Times he alerted his assistant who found the comment and called 911.

“Thankfully, this kid said something,” Edelman told NFL.Com about the person who notified him about the comment. “We’re going to send him something, a care package, just for his work. He’s the real hero.”

Edelman’s assistant did not immediately respond to a Facebook message requesting comment.

Edelman was not available for comment Wednesday, a spokesperson from his company, JE11, said in an email.
